We do not choose where to be born.

We do not choose who our parents are.

But we do choose how we are going to live our lives.

I did not choose to be born in South Sudan,

من خۆم دیاریم نەکرد لە باشووری سودان لەدایکببم،

a country rife with conflict.

وڵاتێکی پڕ لە کێشە

I did not choose my name --

من ناوی خۆمم ههەڵنەبژارد--

Nyiriak,

نیریاک،

which means "war."

واتە جەنگ

I've always rejected it

هەمیشە ڕەتم کردووەتەوە

and all the legacy it was born into.

خۆی و هەموو دەرئەنجامەکانی.

I choose to be called Mary.

بڕیارم دا ناوی خۆم بنێم ماری.

As a teacher, I've stood in front of 120 students,

وەک مامۆستا، لە بەردەمی ،١٢٠ خوێندکاردا دەوەستم

so this stage does not intimidate me.

بۆیە ئەم ستەیجە نامترسێنێ.

My students come from war-torn countries.

خوێندکارەکانم خەڵکی وڵاتانێکن کە جەنگ وێرانی کردوون.

They're so different from each other,

but they have one thing in common:

they fled their homes in order to stay alive.

Some of them belong to parents back home in South Sudan

هەندێکیان منداڵی دایک و باوکێکن کە لە باشووری سودان

who are killing each other

یەکتریان دەکوشت چونکە

because they belong to a different tribe or they have a different belief.

سەر بە دوو خێڵ یاخود دوو بۆچوونی جیاوازن.

Others come from other African countries devastated by war.

ئەوانی دی خەڵکی وڵاتانی دیکەی ئەفریقا بوون، کە جەنگ وێرانی کردوون.

But when they enter my class, they make friends,

بەڵام کاتێک دێنە پۆلەکەم دەبنە هاوڕێی یەکتر،

they walk home together,

پێکەوە بە پیاسە دەگەڕێنەوە ماڵەوە،

they do their homework together.

پێکەوە ئەرکی قوتابخانە جێبەجێ دەکەن.

There is no hatred allowed in my class.

ڕق لە پۆلەکەی مندا جێگەی نابێتەوە

My story is like that of so many other refugees.

چیرۆکی منیش وەک هەر پەناهەندەیەکی دیکەیە.

The war came when I was still a baby.

من منداڵ بووم کە جەنگ هەڵگیرسا

And my father,

باوکیشم،

who had been absent in most of my early childhood,

کە بەدرێژای هەموو منداڵیم .لێم دوور بوو

was doing what other men were doing:

هەمان ئەو شتەی پیاوەکانی دیکەی دەکرد:

fighting for the country.

.شەڕی بۆ وڵات دەکرد

He had two wives and many children.

.دوو ژن و چەندین منداڵی هەبوو

My mother was his second wife,

دایکم دووهەم ژنی بوو،

married to him at the age of 16.

بە ١٦ ساڵی شوی پێکردبوو.

This is simply because my mother came from a poor background,

ئەمە لەبەر ئەوەی دایکم لە خێزانێکی هەژار بوو،

and she had no choice.

هیچ دەرفەتێکی نەبوو.

My father, on the other hand, was rich.

لەولاشەوە باوکم دەوڵەمەند بوو.

He had many cows.

مانگای زۆری هەبوو.

Gunshots were the order of the day.

هەموو ڕۆژێک تەقە دەکرا.

My community was constantly under attack.

کۆمەڵگەکەم بەردەوام لە ژێر هێرشدابوو.

Communities would fight each other as they took water along the Nile.

کۆمەڵگەکان لەگەڵ یەک شەڕیان دەکرد لەکاتێکدا بە درێژایی نیل ئاویان دەبرد.

But that was not all.

بەڵام ئەوە هەمووی نییە.

Planes would drop the spinning and terrifying bombs

that chopped off people's limbs.

But the most terrifying thing for every single parent

was to see their children being abducted and turned into young soldiers.

My mother dug a trench

دایکم حەشارگەیەکی هەڵکەند کە

that soon became our home.

دوای ماوەیەکی کەم بوو بە ماڵمان.

But yet, we did not feel protected.

بەڵام بەوەش هەستمان نەدەکرد پارێزراوین.

She had to flee in search of a safe place for us.

دایکم دەبوو هەڵبێت و بە دوای شوێنێکی پارێزراودا بگەڕێت بۆمان.

I was four years old, and my younger sister was two.

من چوار ساڵ بووم، خوشکە بچووکەکەشم دوو.

We joined a huge mass of people,

شوێن کۆمەڵێک خەڵکی زۆر کەوتین،

and together we walked for many agonizing days

هەموو چەندین ڕۆژی پڕ مەترسیمان بە ڕۆیشتن بەڕێکرد.

in search of a secure place.

لە پێناو دۆزینەوەی شوێنێکی پارێزراودا.

But we could barely rest

بە ئەستەم دەمانتوانی پشوو بدەین

before we were attacked again.

پێش ئەوەی جارێکی تر هێرش بکرێتەوە سەرمان.

I remember my mother was pregnant,

لەیادمە دایکم دووگیان بوو،

when she would take turns to carry me and my younger sister.

بە نۆرە من و خوشکە بچووکەکەمی هەڵدەگرت.

We finally made it across the Kenyan border, yes.

بەڵێ لە کۆتاییدا توانیمان لە سنوری کینیا بپەڕینەوە.

But that was the longest journey that I have ever had in my whole life.

بەڵام ئەوە درێژترین گەشت بوو بە هەموو ژیانم کردبێتم.

My feet were raw with blisters.

قاچەکانم هەموو بووبوون بە برین.

To our surprise,

سەرمان سوڕما،

we found other family members who had fled into the camp earlier on,

کاتێک خێزانی دیکەمان بینی ،پێشتر هەڵهاتبوون بۆ ئەو کەمپەی

where you all are today,

the Kakuma camp.

کەمپی کاکوما.

Now, I want you all to be very quiet just for a moment.

ئێستە دەمەوێت هەمووتان کەمێک بێدەنگ ببن.

Do you hear that?

گوێتان لێیە؟

The sound of silence.

دەنگی بێدەنگی.

No gunshots.

بێ دەنگی گولە.

Peace, at last.

دواجار، ئاشتی.

That was my first memory of this camp.

ئەوە یەکەمین یادەوەریم بوو لەم کەمپە.

When you move from a war zone

کاتێک لە لە گۆڕەپانی جەنگ هەڵدێیت و

and come to a secure place like Kakuma,

دێیت بۆ شوێنێکی ئارامی وەک کاکوما،

you've really gone far.

بەڕاستی زۆر ڕۆیشتوویت.

I only stayed in the camp for three years, though.

من تەنها سێ ساڵ لە کەمپەکە مامەوە.

My father, who had been absent in most of my early childhood,

باوکم کە زۆربەی ژیانی منداڵیم دوور بوو لێم،

came back into my life.

هاتەوە ناو ژیانم.

And he organized for me to move with my uncle

دەرفەتی بۆ من و مامم ڕێکخست تا بڕۆین بۆ لای خێزانەکەمان

to our family in Nakuru.

There, I found my father's first wife,

لەوێ ژنی یەکەمی باوکمم بینی،

my half sisters and my half brothers.

زڕ خوشک و زڕ براکانمم بینی.

I got enrolled in school.

چوومە قوتابخانە.

I remember my first day in school -- I could sing and laugh again --

یەکەم ڕۆژمم لەیادە لە قوتابخانە-- توانیم جارێکی تر گۆرانی بڵێم و پێبکەنم--

and my first set of school uniforms, you bet.

یەکەم دەستە پۆشاکم لە قوتابخانە،

It was amazing.

But then I came to realize

that my uncle did not find it fit for me to go to school,

مامم بە گونجاوی نازانێت بچم بۆ قوتابخانە،

simply because I was a girl.

چونکە من کچبووم.

My half brothers were his first priority.

براکانم گرنگتر بوون بەلایەوە.

He would say, "Educating a girl is a waste of time."

دەیگوت، "خوێندنی کچ کاتبەفیڕۆدانە."

And for that reason, I missed many days of school,

لەبەر ئەوە زۆر ڕۆژی قوتابخانەم لەدەست چوو،

because the fees were not paid.

چونکە کرێکەم نەدرابوو.

My father stepped in

باوکم هاتە پێشەوە و

and organized for me to go to boarding school.

دەرفەتێکی بۆ دۆزیمەوە تا بچمە قوتابخانەیەک کە بەشی ناوخۆیی هەبوو.

I remember the faith that he put in me over the couple of years to come.

لە یادمە ئەو دوو ساڵە چەندە هیوای تێدا چاندم.

He would say, "Education is an animal that you have to overcome.

دەیگوت، "خوێندن ئاژەڵێکە دەبێت مامەڵەیەکی باشی لەگەڵدا بکەین.

With an education, you can survive.

بە هۆی خوێندنەوە ڕزگارمان دەبێت.

Education shall be your first husband."

خوێندن دەبێت یەکەم هاوسەرتبێت."

And with these words came in his first big investment.

لەگەڵ ئەو وشانەدا یەکەم سەرکەوتن بەدەست هات.

I felt lucky!

هەستم دەکرد بەخت یاوەرمە!

But I was missing something:

بەڵام شتێکم لەیاد کردبوو:

my mother.

دایکم.

My mother had been left behind in the camp,

دایکم لە کەمپەکە جێمابوو، و

and I had not seen her since I left it.

منیش لەوکاتەوەی بەجێمهێشتبوو نەمبینیبوو.

Six years without seeing her was really long.

شەش ساڵ بەبێ بینینی ئەو بەڕاستی دوور و درێژ بوو.

I was alone,

بەتەنها بووم،

in school,

لە قوتابخانە،

when I heard of her death.

کاتێ هەوڵی مەرگیم بیست.

I've seen many people back in South Sudan

خەڵکم زۆر بینی لە باشووری سودان

lose their lives.

گیانیان لەدەست دابوو.

I've heard from neighbors

لە دراوسێکانمەوە بیستم کە

lose their sons, their husbands,

خەڵکی کوڕ و مێرد و

their children.

منداڵەکانیان لەدەست داوە.

But I never thought that that would ever come into my life.

بەڵام هەرگیزم پێموانەبوو ئەوە بەسەر ژیانی منیش دێت.

A month earlier, my stepmother,

مانگێک پێشتر، باوەژنەکەم،

who had been so good to me back in Nakuru, died first.

کە لەگەڵم زۆر باش بوو لە ناکورو پێش دایکم مردبوو.

Then I came to realize that after giving birth to four girls,

دواتر زانیم کە دایکم لە دوای خستنەوەی چوار کچ،

my mother had finally given birth to something

دواجار توانی شتیک بخاتەوە کە

that could have made her be accepted into the community --

وایلێکرد کۆمەڵگە زیاتر ڕێزی بگرێت--

a baby boy,

کوڕێکی بوو،

my baby brother.

برا بچووکەکەم.

But he, too,

بەڵام ئەویش،

joined the list of the dead.

چووە ڕیزی مردووەکانەوە.

The most hurting part for me

لە هەموو شتەکان بەئازارتر ئەوە بوو کە

was the fact that I wasn't able to attend my mother's burial.

نەمتوانی لە بەخاکسپاردنەکەی دایکمدا ئامادەبم.

I wasn't allowed.

ڕێگەم پێنەدرا بەژداربم.

They said her family did not find it fit

وتیان کە خێزانەکەی گونجاو نەبووە بەلایانەوە

for her children, who are all girls, to attend her burial,

مناڵەکانی کە هەموو کچن، ئامادەی ناشتنەکە بن،

simply because we were girls.

تەنیا لەبەر ئەوەی کچ بووین.

They would lament to me and say,

بە خەمبارییەوە دەهاتن و پێیان دەگوتم،

"We are sorry, Mary, for your loss.

ماری گیان هاوخەمتین

We are sorry that your parents never left behind any children."

بەداخەوەین کە خێزانەکەت هیچ منداڵێکیان لە دوای خۆیان بەجێنەهێشت.

And I would wonder:

منیش لە خۆمم دەپرسی:

What are we?

ئەی ئێمە چین؟

Are we not children?

ئەی ئێمە منداڵی ئەوان نین؟

In the mentality of my community,

لە بیرکردنەوەی کۆمەڵگەکەمدا،

only the boy child counted.

تەنها کوڕەکان هەژماردەکرێن.

And for that reason, I knew this was the end of me.

لەبەر ئەوە، زانیم کۆتایم پێهاتووە.

But I was the eldest girl.

بەڵام من کچە گەورەبووم.

I had to take care of my siblings.

دەبوو ئاگام لە خوشک و براکانم بێت.

I had to ensure they went to school.

دەبوو خوێندنیان بۆ دابین بکەم.

I was 13 years old.

تەنها ١٣ ساڵ بووم.

How could I have made that happen?

چۆن دەمتوانی ئەوە بکەم؟

I came back to the camp to take care of my siblings.

گەڕامەوە بۆ کەمپەکە تا چاودێری ئەوان بکەم.

I've never felt so stuck.

هەستم کرد گیرم خواردووە.

But then, one of my aunts, Auntie Okoi,

دواتر یەکێک لە پورەکانم پورە ئۆکۆی،

decided to take my sisters.

بڕیاریدا خوشکەکانم ببات.

My father sent me money from Juba for me to go back to school.

باوکم لە جوباوە پارەی بۆ ناردم تا بچمەوە قوتابخانە.

Boarding school was heaven, but it was also so hard.

قوتابخانە کە بەشی ناوخۆیی هەبوو بەهەشت بوو بەڵام قورسیش بوو.

I remember during the visiting days when parents would come to school,

لە یادمە کە دایک و باوکی قوتابییەکان دەهاتن،

and my father would miss.

بەڵام باوکی من نەدەهات.

But when he did come,

کاتێکیش دەهات،

he repeated the same faith in me.

هەمان هیوای تێدا دەبینیمەوە.

This time he would say,

ئەمجارە دەیگوت،

"Mary, you cannot go astray,

ماری، بە ڕێگەی هەڵەدا ناڕۆیت

because you are the future of your siblings."

چونکە تۆ داهاتووی خوشک و براکانتیت."

But then, in 2012,

بەڵام دواتر، لە ٢٠١٢،

life took away the only thing that I was clinging on.

ژیان نزیکترین کەسی لێسەندم

My father died.

باوکم گیانی لەدەست دا.

My grades in school started to collapse,

نمرەکانم کەمبوونەوە،

and when I sat for my final high school exams in 2015,

کاتێک تاقیکردنەوەی کۆتاییم ئەنجامدا لە ٢٠١٥،

I was devastated to receive a C grade.

تێکشکام کاتێک بینیم نمرەکەم .بوو c

OK, I keep telling students in my class,

باشە، هەمیشە ئەمە بە خوێندکارەکانم دەڵێم،

"It's not about the A's; it's about doing your best."

"بهێنیت A گرنگ نییە گرنگ ئەوەیە هەموو هەوڵی خۆت بدەیت."

That was not my best.

ئەوە باشترینی من نەبوو.

I was determined.

I wanted to go back and try again.

دەمویست بگەڕێمەوە و هەوڵ بدەمەوە.

But my parents were gone.

بەڵام خێزانەکەم کۆچیان کردبوو.

I had no one to take care of me,

کەسم نەبوو ئاگای لێمبێت،

and I had no one to pay that fee.

کەسم نەبوو کرێی خویندنەکەم بدات.

I felt so hopeless.

زۆر بێ هیوا بووم.

But then, one of my best friends,

دواتر، یەکێک لە باشترین هاوڕێکانم،

a beautiful Kenyan lady, Esther Kaecha,

کچێکی جوانی کینی، ئێستێر کایچا،

called me during this devastating moment,

لەم کاتە کارەساتاوییەدا بانگی کردم،

and she was like, "Mary, you have a strong will.

گوتی، "ماری، تۆ ویستێکی زۆرت هەیە

And I have a plan, and it's going to work."

منیش پلانێکم هەیە، سەر دەگرێت."

OK, when you're in those devastating moments, you accept anything, right?

لەو چرکەساتی شکستانەدا بە ئەو جۆرە شتانە قایل دەبیت وانییە؟

So the plan was, she organized some travel money

پلانەکەی ئەوە بوو هەندێک پارەی پەیدا کردبوو

for us to travel to Anester Victory Girls High School.

بۆ هەردووکمان تا گەشت بکەین بۆ ئامادەیی ئەنێستەر ڤیکرۆتی کچان.

I remember that day so well.

ئەو ڕۆژەم باش لە یادە.

It was raining when we entered the principal's office.

کاتێک چوینە بەشی بەڕێوبەرەوە باران دەباری.

We were shaking like two chickens that had been rained on,

وەک دوو مریشک تەڕبووبووین و هەڵدەلەرزین،

and we looked at him.

سەیریمان کرد.

He was asking, "What do you want?"

پرسی، "چیتان دەوێت؟"

And we looked at him with the cat face.

بە ڕوخساری پشیلەئاساوە سەیرمان کرد.

"We just want to go back to school."

".تەنها دەمانەوێت بچینەوە قوتابخانە"

Well, believe it or not, he not only paid our school fees

بڕوا بکەن یان نا نەک تەنها پارەی خوێندنەکەی بۆ داین،

but also our uniform and pocket money for food.

بەڵکو جلی قوتابخانە و پڕ گیرفانمان پارەی خواردنیشی پێداین.

Clap for him.

چەپڵەی بۆ لێدەن.

When I finished my high school career,

کاتێک ئامادەیم تەواوکرد،

I became the head girl.

یەکەمین کچ بووم.

And when I sat for the KCSE for a second time,

کاتێک تاقیکردنەوەی کۆتایم ئەنجام دایەوە،

I was able to receive a B minus. Clap.

From time to time,

جار بە جار،

members of my family will insist that my sister and I should get married

خێزانەکەم زیاتر سووردەبوون لەوەی من و خوشکەکەم دەبێت شوو بکەین.

so that somebody will take care of us.

تا کەسیک هەبێت ئاگای لێمان بێت.

They will say,

دەیانگوت،

"We have a man for you."

".پیاوێکت بۆ دەدۆزینەوە"

I really hate the fact that people took us as property rather than children.

زۆرم ڕق لەو ڕاستییە بوو کە وەک کاڵا سەیردەکراین وەک لە منداڵ.

Sometimes they will jokingly say,

هەندێک جار بە گاڵتەوە دەیانگوت

"You are going to lose your market value

"تا زیاتر بخوێنیت

the more educated you become."

زیاتر نرخت لە بازار دادەبەزێت."

But the truth is,

بەڵام لە ڕاستیدا،

an educated woman is feared in my community.

کۆمەڵگە لە کچی خوێندەوار دەترسێ.

But I told them, this is not what I want.

دەمگوت، من ئەوەم ناوێت.

I don't want to get kids at 16 like my mother did.

نەمدەویست وەک دایکم لە ١٦ ساڵیدا منداڵم ببێ.

This is not my life.

ئەوە ژیانی من نییە.

Even though my sisters and I are suffering,

هەرچەندە من و خوشکەکانم ئازارمان دەچەشت،

there's no way we are heading in that direction.

بەڵام هەرگیز نەماندەویست بەو ئاراستەیە بڕۆین.

I refuse to repeat history.

ئامادە نەبووم مێژوو دوبارەبکەمەوە.

Educating a girl will create equal and stable societies.

پەروەردەکردنی کچ، کۆمەڵگەیەکی یەکسان و ئارام دروست دەکات.

And educated refugees will be the hope

پەروەردەکردنی پەناهەندەش دەبێت بەو هیوایەی

of rebuilding their countries someday.

ڕۆژێک وڵاتەکەیانی پێ بنیات دەنێتەوە.

Girls and women have a part to play in this

ژنان و کچان ڕۆڵیان هەیە بیگێڕن لەمەدا

just as much as men.

هێندەی پیاوان.

Well, we have men in my family that encourage me to move on:

پیاویش هەبوو لە خێزانەکەمدا کە پشتیان دەگرتم تا بەردەوام بم:

my half brothers and also my half sisters.

براکانم و خوشکەکانیشم.

When I finished my high school career,

کاتێک ئامادەییم تەواو کرد،

I moved my sisters to Nairobi, where they live with my stepsister.

خوشکەکانمم برد بۆ نایرۆبی، تا لەگەڵ زڕخوشکەکانم بژین.

They live 17 people in a house.

١٧ کەس لە یەک ماڵدا دەژیان

But don't pity us.

بەزەیتان پیاماندا نەیەتەوە.

The most important thing is that they all get a decent education.

لە هەموو شتەکان گرنگتر ئەوە بوو کە هەموو دەچوون بۆ خوێندن.

The winners of today

براوەکانی ئەمڕۆ

are the losers of yesterday,

دۆڕاوەکانی دوێنێن،

but who never gave up.

بەڵام هەرگیز کۆڵیان نەدا.

And that is who we are,

ئێمەش هەمان شتمان کرد،

my sisters and I.

من و خوشکەکانم.

And I'm so proud of that.

زۆر شانازی بەوەوە دەکەم.

My biggest investment in life --

گەورەترین دەستەکەوتی ژیانم--

is the education of my sisters.

پەروەردەکردنی خوشکەکانمە.

Education creates an equal and fair chance for everyone to make it.

پەروەردە دەرفەتی یەکسان دەڕەجسێنێت بۆ هەمووان تا بەدەستی بهێنن.

I personally believe education is not all about the syllabus.

خۆم پێموایە پەروەردە تەنها ئەو مەنهەجە نییە کە دەخوێنرێت.

It's about friendship.

پەروەردە واتە هاوڕێیەتی.

It's about discovering our talents.

پەروەردە، واتە دۆزینەوەی بەهرەکانمان.

It's about discovering our destiny.

واتە دۆزینەوەی چارەنوسمان.

I will, for example, not forget the joy that I had

when I first had singing lessons in school,

which is still a passion of mine.

But I wouldn't have gotten that

anywhere else.

As a teacher, I see my classroom as a laboratory

that not only generates skills and knowledge

but also understanding and hope.

بەڵکو تێگەیشتن و هیواش.

Let's take a tree.

A tree may have its branches cut,

but give it water, and it will grow new branches.

For the child of war,

بۆ منداڵێکی ناو جەنگیش،

an education can turn their tears of loss into a passion for peace.

پەروەردە دەتوانێ فرمێسکی خەمەکانیان بگۆڕێ بە خۆشەویستی بۆ ئاشتی.

And for that reason, I refuse to give up on a single student in my class.

لەبەر ئەو هۆکارە، نامەوێ دەستبەرداری تەنیا خوێندکارێکی پۆلەکەشم ببم.

The school environment

کەشوهەوای قوتابخانە

gives you a focus to focus ahead.

بوارێکی باشت دەداتێ تیشک بخەیتە سەر داهاتوو.

Let's take it this way:

با بەم جۆرە لێی بڕوانین:

when you're busy solving mathematical equations,

کاتێک سەرقاڵی شیکاری پرسیارێکی بیرکاریت، و

and you are memorizing poetry,

هۆنراوەیەک لەبەر دەکەیت،

you forget the violence that you witnessed back home.

ئەو توندوتیژییە لەیاد دەکەیت کە لە نیشتیمان بینیوتە.

And that is the power of education.

ئەوە هێزی خوێندن.

It creates this place for peace.

ئەم شوێنە بۆ ئاشتی دروست دەکات.

Kakuma is teeming with learners.

کاکومان جمەی دێت لە فێرخواز.

Over 85,000 students are enrolled in schools here,

زیاتر لە ٨٥،٠٠٠ خوێندکار ناونوسکراون.

which makes up 40 percent of the refugee population.

ئەمەش دەکاتە ٤٠ لە سەدی پەناهەندەکانی کەمپەکە.

It includes children who lost years of education because of the war back home.

بەو منداڵانەشەوە کە چەندین ساڵ بە هۆی جەنگەوە خوێندنیان لەدەست چووە.

And I want to ask you a question:

دەمەوێت پرسیارێکتان لێ بکەم:

If education is about building a generation of hope,

ئەگەر پەروەردە بە مانای بنیاتنانی هیوای نەوەکان بێت،

why are there 120 students packed in my classroom?

بۆچی ١٢٠ قوتابی لە پۆلەکەی مندا کەڵەکە کراون؟

Why is it that only six percent of the primary school students

بۆچی تەنها ٦ لە سەدی قوتابییانی ناوەندی

are making it to high school,

دەچنە ئامادەیی،

simply because we do not have enough places for them?

زۆر بە سادەیی، چونکە شوێنی تەواومان نییە بۆیان.

And why is it that only one percent of the secondary school graduates

ئەی بۆچی تەنها ١ لە سەدی قوتابییانی ئامادەیی

are making it to university?

دەچنە زانکۆ؟

I began by saying that I am a teacher.

لە دەستپێکدا گوتم کە مامۆستام.

But once again, I have become a student.

بەڵام جارێکی دی، بوومەوە بە قوتابی.

In March, I moved to Rwanda

مانگی ٣، گەڕامەوە بۆ ڕواندا

on a scholarship program called "Bridge2Rwanda."

بە بەرنامەیەکی تواناسازی بە ناوی "Bridge2Rwanda."

It prepares scholars for universities.

قوتابی بۆ زانکۆ ئامادە دەکات.

They are able to get a chance to compete for universities abroad.

دەتوانن دەرفەتی وەرگرتن لە زانکۆکانی دەرەوە وەربگرن.

I am now having teachers telling me what to do,

ئێستا مامۆستام هەیە، ڕێگەم پیشان دەدەن،

instead of the other way round.

لە جیاتی ئەوەی پێچەوانەکەی بێت.

People are once again investing in me.

خەڵکی جارێکی دی هیوام تێدا دروست دەکەن.

So I want to ask you all to invest in young refugees.

داوا لە هەمووتان دەکەم کە هیوا لە پەناهەندە گەنجەکاندا دروست بکەن.

Think of the tree that we mentioned earlier.

بیر لەو درەختە بکەنەوە کە پێشتر باسم کرد.

We are the generation to plant it,

ئێمە ئەو نەوەیەین کە ڕواندومانە

so that the next generation can water it,

تا نەوەی دواتر ئاوی بدەن، و

and the one that follows will enjoy the shade.

ئەو نەوەیەی کە بە دوایدا دێت چێژ لە سێبەرەکەی ببینێت.

They will reap the benefits.

بەرهەمەکەی دەچننەوە.

And the greatest benefit of them all

لە هەموو بەرهەمەکانیش گرنگتر

is an education that will last.

ئەوەیە کە خوێندن بەردەوامی دەبێت.
