We do not choose where to be born.

I did not choose to be born in South Sudan,

a country rife with conflict.

I did not choose my name --

Nyiriak,

니리약,

which means "war."

전쟁이란 뜻입니다.

I've always rejected it

저는 늘 제 이름을 부정했습니다.

and all the legacy it was born into.

그 속에 담긴 의미들도 부정했습니다.

I choose to be called Mary.

저는 메리라고 불리길 원합니다.

As a teacher, I've stood in front of 120 students,

저는 교사로서 120명의 학생 앞에 섭니다.

so this stage does not intimidate me.

그래서 이 자리가 떨리지는 않습니다.

My students come from war-torn countries.

제 학생들은 전쟁으로 얼룩진 나라에서 왔습니다.

They're so different from each other,

모두 모습은 다르지만

but they have one thing in common:

하나의 공통점이 있습니다.

they fled their homes in order to stay alive.

살기 위해 고향을 버리고 왔다는 것입니다.

Some of them belong to parents back home in South Sudan

남수단에서 온 학생들이 있습니다.

who are killing each other

분쟁이 빈번한 곳이죠.

because they belong to a different tribe or they have a different belief.

부족과 이념이 서로 다르다는 이유로 말입니다.

Others come from other African countries devastated by war.

다른 학생들도 전쟁으로 폐허가 된 아프리카 여러 나라에서 왔죠.

But when they enter my class, they make friends,

하지만 제 교실에 들어오는 순간 그들은 친구가 됩니다.

they walk home together,

함께 하교를 하고,

they do their homework together.

함께 숙제를 합니다.

There is no hatred allowed in my class.

제 교실에선 증오를 용납하지 않습니다.

My story is like that of so many other refugees.

저 또한 다른 난민들과 별반 다르지 않습니다.

The war came when I was still a baby.

제가 아직 아기였을 때 전쟁이 일어났습니다.

And my father,

그리고 저는 아버지와

who had been absent in most of my early childhood,

유년 시절을 함께 보내지 못했습니다.

was doing what other men were doing:

아버지는 다른 남성들과 마찬가지로

fighting for the country.

나라를 위해 싸웠으니까요.

He had two wives and many children.

아버지는 두 명의 아내가 있었고 자식도 많았습니다.

My mother was his second wife,

제 어머니는 둘째부인이었습니다.

married to him at the age of 16.

16살에 결혼했어요.

This is simply because my mother came from a poor background,

가난한 집안의 딸이었으니까요.

and she had no choice.

다른 선택은 할 수 없었어요.

My father, on the other hand, was rich.

반면에 제 아버지는 부자였습니다.

He had many cows.

많은 소를 가지고 있었어요.

Gunshots were the order of the day.

총성은 늘 들리는 소리였습니다.

My community was constantly under attack.

우리 지역은 끊임없이 공격받았습니다.

Communities would fight each other as they took water along the Nile.

나일 강물을 길어 쓰기 위해서 부족 간 전투가 일어난거죠.

But that was not all.

하지만 그게 다가 아닙니다.

Planes would drop the spinning and terrifying bombs

비행기에서 투하된 끔찍한 폭탄에

that chopped off people's limbs.

사람들은 팔다리를 잃었습니다.

But the most terrifying thing for every single parent

하지만 부모들이 가장 끔찍하게 여기는 것은

was to see their children being abducted and turned into young soldiers.

어린 자식들이 억지로 끌려가 소년병이 되는 것이었습니다.

My mother dug a trench

제 어머니는 참호를 파셨고

that soon became our home.

우리는 그 안에서 살게 되었습니다.

But yet, we did not feel protected.

하지만 여전히 안전하지 않았습니다.

She had to flee in search of a safe place for us.

어머니는 우리를 위해 안전한 곳으로 피난해야 했습니다.

I was four years old, and my younger sister was two.

전 4살, 제 여동생은 2살이었습니다.

We joined a huge mass of people,

우린 수많은 인파를 따라

and together we walked for many agonizing days

함께 걸으며 고통스러운 나날을 보냈습니다.

in search of a secure place.

안전한 장소를 찾기 위해서요.

But we could barely rest

또 다시 공격당하기까지

before we were attacked again.

우린 거의 쉬지도 못했습니다.

I remember my mother was pregnant,

당시 임신 중이었던 어머니가

when she would take turns to carry me and my younger sister.

저와 제 여동생을 번갈아 업고 걸어서

We finally made it across the Kenyan border, yes.

우린 마침내 케냐 국경을 넘을 수 있었습니다.

But that was the longest journey that I have ever had in my whole life.

그건 제 인생에서 가장 긴 여정이었습니다.

My feet were raw with blisters.

제 발은 물집투성이가 되었습니다.

To our surprise,

우린 놀랍게도

we found other family members who had fled into the camp earlier on,

먼저 피난 떠난 가족들을 난민 캠프에서 만났습니다.

where you all are today,

현재 여러분이 계시는

the Kakuma camp.

이 카쿠마 난민 캠프에서요.

Now, I want you all to be very quiet just for a moment.

여러분, 잠시만 조용히 해주세요.

Do you hear that?

들리시나요?

The sound of silence.

이 고요함.

No gunshots.

총성이 없는

Peace, at last.

비로소 찾은 평화.

That was my first memory of this camp.

이것이 제가 캠프에 도착해서 느낀 첫인상입니다.

When you move from a war zone

전쟁 지역에서 벗어나

and come to a secure place like Kakuma,

카쿠마 같이 안전한 지역으로 이동하는 것은

you've really gone far.

아주 긴 여정입니다.

I only stayed in the camp for three years, though.

저는 캠프에서 3년을 지냈습니다.

My father, who had been absent in most of my early childhood,

어린 시절 떨어져 지냈던 아버지가

came back into my life.

그제서야 제 삶에 돌아오셨습니다.

And he organized for me to move with my uncle

그리고는 저를 삼촌과 함께 나쿠루에 있는 가족에게 보냈습니다.

to our family in Nakuru.

There, I found my father's first wife,

그곳에서 저는 아버지의 첫째 부인과

my half sisters and my half brothers.

이복 형제자매들을 만났습니다.

I got enrolled in school.

그리고 학교에 입학했습니다.

I remember my first day in school -- I could sing and laugh again --

처음 등교하던 날을 기억합니다. 다시 웃고, 노래 부를 수 있었죠.

and my first set of school uniforms, you bet.

그리고 제 첫 교복을 기억합니다.

It was amazing.

정말 멋졌습니다.

But then I came to realize

그런데, 제가 학교에 가는 것을

that my uncle did not find it fit for me to go to school,

삼촌은 못마땅해하셨습니다.

simply because I was a girl.

단지 제가 여자란 이유 만으로요.

My half brothers were his first priority.

삼촌에게 최우선순위는 제 이복 남자 형제들이었습니다.

He would say, "Educating a girl is a waste of time."

"여자가 교육 받는 건 시간 낭비야." 라고 말하곤 하셨습니다.

And for that reason, I missed many days of school,

그래서 전 학교를 자주 빠졌습니다.

because the fees were not paid.

등록금을 내지 못했거든요.

My father stepped in

그래서 아버지가 개입하셨고

and organized for me to go to boarding school.

저를 기숙학교로 보내주셨습니다.

I remember the faith that he put in me over the couple of years to come.

아버지가 몇 년간 제게 전해 주신 신념을 기억합니다.

He would say, "Education is an animal that you have to overcome.

"교육은 네가 길들여야 할 동물이다."

With an education, you can survive.

"교육을 받아야 네가 살 수 있다."

Education shall be your first husband."

"교육이 너의 첫 남편이어야 한다." 라고 하셨습니다.

And with these words came in his first big investment.

이 말씀들과 함께 아버지는 처음으로 큰 투자를 하셨습니다.

I felt lucky!

행운이었죠.

But I was missing something:

하지만 제가 놓친 게 있었습니다.

my mother.

제 어머니.

My mother had been left behind in the camp,

어머니는 난민 캠프에 남아 계셨고

and I had not seen her since I left it.

제가 그곳을 떠난 후에는 어머니를 만나지 못했습니다.

Six years without seeing her was really long.

어머니가 없는 6년은 매우 길었습니다.

I was alone,

어머니의 부고를 들은 날

in school,

저는 학교에

when I heard of her death.

혼자 있었습니다.

I've seen many people back in South Sudan

저는 남수단에서 수많은 사람이

lose their lives.

죽는 것을 봐왔습니다.

I've heard from neighbors

제 이웃들이

lose their sons, their husbands,

자식이나 남편의 죽음을

their children.

겪는 걸 봤습니다.

But I never thought that that would ever come into my life.

하지만 그런 죽음이 제게 닥칠 거라곤 생각하지 못했습니다.

A month earlier, my stepmother,

그보다 한 달 전, 나쿠루에서

who had been so good to me back in Nakuru, died first.

자상하셨던 의붓어머니가 먼저 돌아가셨습니다.

Then I came to realize that after giving birth to four girls,

그때 저는 깨달았습니다. 딸만 넷을 낳은 어머니가

my mother had finally given birth to something

다섯 번째 출산으로

that could have made her be accepted into the community --

마침내 인정받았다는 것을요.

a baby boy,

남자아이.

my baby brother.

제 남동생입니다.

But he, too,

하지만 그 아이도

joined the list of the dead.

결국 죽었습니다.

The most hurting part for me

제가 가장 가슴 아팠던 건

was the fact that I wasn't able to attend my mother's burial.

어머니의 장례식에 가지 못한 것입니다.

I wasn't allowed.

허락조차 못 받았어요.

They said her family did not find it fit

우리는 친자식이지만 모두 딸이기 때문에

for her children, who are all girls, to attend her burial,

어머니의 장례식에 참석하는 게 부적절하다고 했습니다.

simply because we were girls.

단지 여자라는 이유 만으로요.

They would lament to me and say,

사람들은 애도하며 제게 말했습니다.

"We are sorry, Mary, for your loss.

"메리, 유감이구나. 고인의 명복을 빈다."

We are sorry that your parents never left behind any children."

"너희 부모님이 후손을 남기지 못해 유감이다."

And I would wonder:

전 의아했습니다.

What are we?

그럼 우린 뭐지?

Are we not children?

우린 자식이 아니란 말인가?

In the mentality of my community,

우리 사회의 인식은

only the boy child counted.

남자만을 자식으로 여겼습니다.

And for that reason, I knew this was the end of me.

이제 제 삶은 끝났다고 생각했습니다.

But I was the eldest girl.

하지만 전 장녀였습니다.

I had to take care of my siblings.

동생들을 돌봐야 했어요.

I had to ensure they went to school.

학교에도 보내야 했고요.

I was 13 years old.

그때 전 13살이었습니다.

How could I have made that happen?

어떻게 해야 했을까요?

I came back to the camp to take care of my siblings.

저는 동생들을 보살피기 위해 난민캠프로 돌아갔습니다.

I've never felt so stuck.

발목 잡혔다고 생각하진 않았어요.

But then, one of my aunts, Auntie Okoi,

하지만 그때, 오코이 고모님께서

decided to take my sisters.

동생들을 거두기로 하셨습니다.

My father sent me money from Juba for me to go back to school.

아버지는 제가 복학할 수 있게 주바에서 돈을 보내주셨습니다.

Boarding school was heaven, but it was also so hard.

학교로 돌아가는 건 정말 좋았지만 아주 힘들기도 했습니다.

I remember during the visiting days when parents would come to school,

학부모 방문 행사 일정이 있었는데

and my father would miss.

아버지는 그날 못 오실 줄 알았죠.

But when he did come,

그런데 아버지는 학교에 오셨고,

he repeated the same faith in me.

제게 또다시 신념을 심어 주셨습니다.

This time he would say,

이번에는 이렇게 말씀하셨어요.

"Mary, you cannot go astray,

"메리, 나쁜 길로 빠지면 안 된다."

because you are the future of your siblings."

"넌 동생들의 미래야."

But then, in 2012,

하지만 2012년,

life took away the only thing that I was clinging on.

삶은 제 유일한 희망을 앗아갔습니다.

My father died.

아버지의 죽음.

My grades in school started to collapse,

학교 성적은 곤두박질쳤고,

and when I sat for my final high school exams in 2015,

2015년 고등학교 마지막 시험에서

I was devastated to receive a C grade.

C학점을 받고 큰 충격을 받았습니다.

OK, I keep telling students in my class,

저는 학생들에게 항상 이렇게 얘기합니다.

"It's not about the A's; it's about doing your best."

"성적이 중요한 게 아니라, 최선을 다하는 게 중요하다."고요.

That was not my best.

그때 전 최선을 다하지 않았습니다.

I was determined.

그래서 결심했습니다.

I wanted to go back and try again.

다시 한 번 도전해보겠다고요.

But my parents were gone.

하지만 부모님은 이미 돌아가셨고

I had no one to take care of me,

절 돌봐줄 사람은 아무도 없었죠.

and I had no one to pay that fee.

등록금을 내줄 사람도요.

I felt so hopeless.

전 좌절했습니다.

But then, one of my best friends,

하지만 바로 그때, 제 가장 친한 친구이자

a beautiful Kenyan lady, Esther Kaecha,

아름다운 케냐 여성 에스더 카에챠가

called me during this devastating moment,

절망에 빠져있던 제게 전화를 했습니다.

and she was like, "Mary, you have a strong will.

그리고 말하더군요. "메리, 넌 의지가 아주 강해."

And I have a plan, and it's going to work."

"나한테 계획이 있는데, 도움이 될 거야."라고요.

OK, when you're in those devastating moments, you accept anything, right?

다들 이런 절망적인 상황이라면 어떤 제의라도 받아들이시겠죠?

So the plan was, she organized some travel money

그 계획은 그녀가 경비를 마련했으니,

for us to travel to Anester Victory Girls High School.

어네스터 빅토리 여자고등학교에 가보자는 것이었습니다.

I remember that day so well.

전 그날을 또렷하게 기억합니다.

It was raining when we entered the principal's office.

우리가 교장실에 들어갔을 때 밖에는 비가 내리고 있었어요.

We were shaking like two chickens that had been rained on,

우린 비에 젖은 강아지처럼 떨면서

and we looked at him.

교장선생님을 쳐다봤죠.

He was asking, "What do you want?"

"무슨 일이지?"라고 물으시더군요.

And we looked at him with the cat face.

우린 애걸하는 눈빛으로 말했어요.

"We just want to go back to school."

"그저 학교로 다시 돌아오고 싶어요."

Well, believe it or not, he not only paid our school fees

믿으실지 모르겠지만, 선생님은 우리 등록금뿐 아니라

but also our uniform and pocket money for food.

교복과 음식 살 용돈까지 주셨어요.

Clap for him.

When I finished my high school career,

고등학교 과정을 마칠 때쯤,

I became the head girl.

전 학생대표가 됐어요.

And when I sat for the KCSE for a second time,

그리고 다시 시험을 치렀을 때

I was able to receive a B minus. Clap.

From time to time,

이따금,

members of my family will insist that my sister and I should get married

친척들은 저와 여동생이 결혼을 했어야 했다고 말합니다.

so that somebody will take care of us.

그래야 누군가 우릴 돌봐줄 테니까요.

They will say,

이런 말도 하죠.

"We have a man for you."

"소개해 줄 남자가 있단다."

I really hate the fact that people took us as property rather than children.

사람들이 우릴 사람이 아니라 재산으로 취급하는 게 정말 싫어요.

Sometimes they will jokingly say,

가끔은 농담처럼 말합니다.

"You are going to lose your market value

"네가 공부를 많이 할수록

the more educated you become."

네 상품성은 떨어질 거다."

But the truth is,

하지만 진실은,

an educated woman is feared in my community.

우리 사회에선 교육 받은 여자를 두려워한다는 것입니다.

But I told them, this is not what I want.

전 그들에게 그건 내가 원하는 것이 아니라고 말합니다.

I don't want to get kids at 16 like my mother did.

전 제 어머니처럼 16살에 아이를 갖고 싶지 않아요.

This is not my life.

그건 제 인생이 아니에요.

Even though my sisters and I are suffering,

저나 여동생들이 아무리 힘들다 해도,

there's no way we are heading in that direction.

그렇게 살 수는 없어요.

I refuse to repeat history.

전 과거를 반복하고 싶지 않습니다.

Educating a girl will create equal and stable societies.

여자도 교육을 받는다면 균형 잡힌 사회를 이룰 수 있습니다.

And educated refugees will be the hope

난민들이 교육을 받는다면

of rebuilding their countries someday.

언젠가 조국을 재건할 수도 있습니다.

Girls and women have a part to play in this

여자들도 이런 역할에 참여할 수 있습니다.

just as much as men.

남자들만큼이나요.

Well, we have men in my family that encourage me to move on:

제 가족 중에도 절 지지해주는 사람들이 있습니다.

my half brothers and also my half sisters.

이복형제자매들입니다.

When I finished my high school career,

전 고등학교를 졸업하고,

I moved my sisters to Nairobi, where they live with my stepsister.

여동생들을 이복자매들이 있는 나이로비로 보냈습니다.

They live 17 people in a house.

한집에 17명이 같이 살았습니다.

But don't pity us.

안쓰러워 마세요.

The most important thing is that they all get a decent education.

중요한 건 그 애들이 훌륭한 교육을 받았다는 겁니다.

The winners of today

포기하지 않는다면

are the losers of yesterday,

어제의 패자가

but who never gave up.

오늘의 승자가 될 수 있습니다.

And that is who we are,

그게 바로 우립니다.

my sisters and I.

여동생들과 접니다.

And I'm so proud of that.

그 사실이 아주 자랑스럽습니다.

My biggest investment in life --

제 인생에서 이룬 가장 큰 일은,

is the education of my sisters.

여동생들이 교육을 받을 수 있게 해준 겁니다.

Education creates an equal and fair chance for everyone to make it.

교육은 성공을 바라는 모두에게 공정한 기회를 줍니다.

I personally believe education is not all about the syllabus.

전 교육이 단순히 수업만을 뜻하지 않는다고 생각합니다.

It's about friendship.

교육엔 우정이 있습니다.

It's about discovering our talents.

교육은 재능을 찾게 해줍니다.

It's about discovering our destiny.

우리의 운명을 찾게 해줍니다.

I will, for example, not forget the joy that I had

그 예로, 전 처음 등교한 날 들었던

when I first had singing lessons in school,

즐거운 노래수업을 잊을 수 없습니다.

which is still a passion of mine.

아직도 그 열정이 있습니다.

But I wouldn't have gotten that

하지만 다른 어떤 곳에서도

anywhere else.

그 열정을 느낄 수는 없습니다.

As a teacher, I see my classroom as a laboratory

전 교사로서 제 교실을 단지,

that not only generates skills and knowledge

지식과 기술만을 습득하는 곳이 아니라

but also understanding and hope.

이해와 희망을 품는 연구실로 봅니다.

Let's take a tree.

나무를 예로 들어볼게요.

A tree may have its branches cut,

나무는 가지가 부러지더라도,

but give it water, and it will grow new branches.

계속 물을 주면 새 가지가 돋아납니다.

For the child of war,

교육은, 전쟁을 겪는 아이들이 흘리는 상실의 눈물을

an education can turn their tears of loss into a passion for peace.

평화를 향한 열정으로 바꿔줄 수 있습니다.

And for that reason, I refuse to give up on a single student in my class.

그래서 전 제 수업 중 단 한 명의 학생도 포기하지 않습니다.

Education heals.

교육은 치유를 합니다.

The school environment

학교생활은

gives you a focus to focus ahead.

앞으로 나아가는 디딤돌이 될 것입니다.

Let's take it this way:

이런 예를 들어보겠습니다.

when you're busy solving mathematical equations,

여러분이 바쁘게 수학 방정식을 풀고 있다거나

and you are memorizing poetry,

한창 시 구절을 외우는 중이라면

you forget the violence that you witnessed back home.

고향에서 목격했던 잔혹한 장면들이 떠오르지 않을 것입니다.

And that is the power of education.

그것이 바로 교육의 힘입니다.

It creates this place for peace.

이 장소를 평화롭게 만듭니다.

Kakuma is teeming with learners.

카쿠마 난민캠프는 배우는 사람들로 가득합니다.

Over 85,000 students are enrolled in schools here,

8만 5천 명이 넘는 학생들이 이 곳에 있는 학교에 입학했습니다.

which makes up 40 percent of the refugee population.

난민 인구수의 40퍼센트가 학생이라는 것입니다.

It includes children who lost years of education because of the war back home.

고향에서 일어난 전쟁때문에 학교생활을 못한 아이들도 포함해서요.

And I want to ask you a question:

여러분께 하나 물어보겠습니다.

If education is about building a generation of hope,

교육이 희망의 세대를 키우는 것이라면

why are there 120 students packed in my classroom?

왜, 120명의 학생이 빽빽하게 모여 제 수업을 들을까요?

Why is it that only six percent of the primary school students

왜, 단 6%의 초등학생만

are making it to high school,

고등학교로 진학하는 것일까요?

simply because we do not have enough places for them?

단순히 학생들에게 제공할 장소가 부족하기 때문일까요?

And why is it that only one percent of the secondary school graduates

왜, 단 1%의 고등학교 졸업생만

are making it to university?

대학교에 진학할 수 있을까요?

I began by saying that I am a teacher.

저는 교사입니다.

But once again, I have become a student.

그런데 저는 다시 한 번 학생이 되기로 했습니다.

In March, I moved to Rwanda

3월에 저는 르완다로 떠났습니다.

on a scholarship program called "Bridge2Rwanda."

"브릿지 투 르완다"라는 장학금 프로그램을 통해서요.

It prepares scholars for universities.

이 프로그램은 대학 진학을 희망하는 학생들을 지원합니다.

They are able to get a chance to compete for universities abroad.

학생들은 외국 대학에서 공부할 기회를 얻을 수 있죠.

I am now having teachers telling me what to do,

지금 저에게는 하지 말라고 말하는 대신에

instead of the other way round.

무엇을 해야 할지 알려주시는 선생님들이 계십니다.

People are once again investing in me.

저는 지금 또 한 번의 투자를 받고 있습니다.

So I want to ask you all to invest in young refugees.

제가 부탁드리고자 하는것은 난민 소년 소녀를 위한 투자입니다.

Think of the tree that we mentioned earlier.

조금 전에 나눴던 나무 이야기를 떠올려보세요.

We are the generation to plant it,

우리가 나무를 심을 세대라면

so that the next generation can water it,

다음 세대는 나무에 물을 줄 것이고

and the one that follows will enjoy the shade.

그렇게 나무가 자라다 보면, 다음 세대는 그늘에서 쉴 수 있겠죠.

They will reap the benefits.

그런 노력으로 분명한 성과를 거둘 것입니다.

And the greatest benefit of them all

그 중 가장 위대한 성과는 바로,

is an education that will last.

교육이 지속될 것이라는 거죠.
