Well, I'm doing a different trick tonight,

and I'm going to imagine all of us without farmers,

and well, it's not so much different.

And our farmers do so much more for us

than simply feed and clothe and provide us excellent things to drink.

Our farmers are an important part of all of our communities,

particularly our rural communities.

And more than that,

they're a strong driver of resilient economics.

Think about it this way:

When a brewer buys hops from me, grown here in Minnesota,

This quote, I think, exemplifies what our family farmers do for us

in stewarding our shared natural resources.

"That land is a community is the basic concept of ecology,

"ئه‌و خاكه‌ كۆمه‌ڵەیه‌كه‌ چه‌مكی سه‌ره‌كیی ژینگه‌یه‌،

but that land is to be loved and respected as an extension of ethics."

Now, they sure do a lot of good stuff for us.

And our family farmers are great, we'd all agree.

However,

the trends in agriculture today are dire.

The average age of a farmer in America,

according to the latest agricultural census --

Of all the farmers,

Our farmers are pretty old in this country.

And unfortunately,

we're not really replacing them.

Of all the farmers that we added in this country

And I think there's a reason folks aren't coming into it,

and that's prices.

We're going to go through a couple of slides like this.

Milk: This is the average retail price of a gallon of milk in the United States.

And so how are we supposed to have strong local farms

بۆیه‌ چۆن وای دابنێین كێڵگه‌ی ناوخۆیی به‌هێزمان هه‌یه‌

in this scenario?

له‌و سیناریۆیه‌؟

What are we supposed to do if there aren't any local farmers left?

پێویسته‌ له‌ سه‌رمان چی بكه‌ین ئه‌گه‌ر هیچ جوتیارێكی ناوخۆیی نه‌مابێت؟

And this isn't just a farmer problem,

و ئه‌مه‌ ته‌نیا كێشه‌ی جوتیار نییه‌،

it's not just something for the few of us farmers to sort out.

ته‌نیا شتێك نییه‌ بۆ كه‌مێك له‌ ئێمه‌ی جوتیاره‌كان ڕێكی بخه‌ین.

This is an all-of-us problem.

This is rural and it's urban and it's statewide and it's nationwide.

So what do we do about it?

I'll tell you that.

But first, a story.

به‌ڵام سه‌ره‌تا، چیڕۆكێك.

The green movement, we're all kind of familiar,

جووڵه‌ی سه‌وز،هه‌موومان به‌جۆرێك شاره‌زاییمان هه‌یه‌ له‌باره‌ی ،

started in the '60s, planting trees.

له‌ شه‌سته‌كانه‌وه‌ ده‌ستی پێكرد، ڕوواندنی داره‌كان.

And now we've come such a long way.

و ئێستا له‌و ڕێگه‌ درێژه‌ هاتووین.

Green is part of our day-to-day lives.

It's part of the day-to-day lives of Fortune 500 businesses.

It's the subject of international treaties,

We participate in the green movement each and every day.

Yet ...

and this is how we get to the idea --

the food movement,

جووڵه‌ی خۆراك،

relatively younger, but also somewhat familiar, I imagine.

ڕیژه‌ییانه‌ بچووكتره‌، به‌ڵام ئه‌ویش هه‌ندێك پێی ئاشنان، وای دێنمه‌به‌رچاوم.

You go to the grocery store,

ده‌چیت بۆ كۆگای میوه‌فرۆشه‌كه‌،

you see a sign that says "Buy local,"

ئاماژه‌یه‌ك ده‌بینیت نووسراوه‌ "خۆماڵی بكڕه‌."

you go to the farmers market, you go to the co-op,

ده‌ڕۆیت بۆ بازاڕی جوتیاره‌كان، ده‌ڕۆیت بۆ هاوكاریكه‌ره‌كه‌،

you read books by prominent authors.

The food movement to date

جووڵه‌ی خۆراك تاكو ئێستا

could be summarized as voting with your fork.

ده‌توانرێت كورت بكرێته‌وه‌ وه‌كو ده‌نگدان به‌ چه‌تاڵه‌كه‌ت.

The idea is: you pull a dollar out of your wallet --

بیرۆكه‌كه‌ ئه‌مه‌یه‌: دۆلارێك له‌ جزدانه‌كه‌ت ده‌كه‌یته‌ ده‌ره‌وه‌--

how you spend that dollar affects the food system.

چۆن ئه‌و دۆلاره‌ به‌كاردێنی كار ده‌كاته‌ سه‌ر سیسته‌می خۆراك.

It supports farmers close to home.

هانی جوتیاره‌كان ده‌دات له‌ ماڵ نزیك بن.

And that's all well and good, but where are we going?

ئاوا هه‌موو شتێك زۆر باشه‌، به‌ڵام ئێمه‌ بۆ كوێ ده‌ڕۆین؟

How do we get to our renewable-energy moment

چۆن ده‌توانین بگه‌ین به‌ ساتی وزه‌ی نوێكراوه‌

like the green movement did?

هه‌روه‌ك چۆن جووڵه‌ی سه‌وز كردی؟

And this, I think, is what we need to do.

و ئه‌مه‌، وای بۆده‌چم، ئه‌وه‌یه‌ كه‌ پێویسته‌ بیكه‌ین.

Just voting with our fork is not solving the issues

ته‌نیا ده‌نگدان به‌ چه‌تاڵه‌كانمان چاره‌سه‌ری ئه‌و كێشانه‌ ناكات

that our farmers are facing.

كه‌ جوتیاره‌كانمان ڕووبه‌ڕووی ده‌بنه‌وه‌.

And so we need to do more than that.

بۆیه‌ پێویسته‌ زیاتر له‌وه‌ بكه‌ین.

I believe we must move on from just voting with our fork

باوه‌ڕم وایه‌ پێویسته‌ به‌رده‌وام بین له‌ ته‌نیا به‌ چه‌تاڵه‌كانمان ده‌نگ بده‌ین

to voting with our vote.

بۆ ده‌نگدان به‌ ده‌نگه‌كانمان.

We need to take our dollars

پێویسته‌ دۆلاره‌كانمان هه‌ڵبگرین

and continue to spend them locally.

و به‌رده‌وام له‌ ناخۆ به‌كاری بهێنین.

We also need to show up at the ballot box for our farmers.

هه‌روه‌ها پێویسته‌ ئاماده‌ بین له‌ سندووقی ده‌نگدان بۆ جوتیاره‌كانمان.

This is bigger than just buying local strawberries

ئه‌مه‌ گه‌وره‌تره‌ له‌ ته‌نیا كڕینی شلیكی خۆماڵیی

once a year at a pick-your-own.

ساڵی جارێك له‌ هه‌ڵبژاردنی تایبه‌تی خۆت.

This is a year-round effort that we must make together

ئه‌مه‌ هه‌وڵی درێژایی ساڵه‌ كه‌ پێویسته‌ پێكه‌وه‌ بیده‌ین

to make the change we need.

بۆ دروست كردنی ئه‌و گۆڕانه‌ی كه‌ پێویستمانه‌.

Changes like fair pricing for farmers.

گۆڕانی وه‌كو نرخی دادوه‌رانه‌ بۆ جوتیاره‌كان.

That's quotas, supply management,

ئه‌وه‌ به‌شه‌كانه‌، به‌ڕێوه‌بردنی دابین كردن،

guaranteed prices.

Changes like fair and open trade.

That means ending trade wars.

And yeah, of course it means voting.

Now we all knew that one already, though.

For example, it's working.

بۆ نموونه‌، ئیش ده‌كات.

Hey, who's that?

سڵاو، ئه‌وه‌ كێ یه‌؟

Just this year in Minnesota,

ته‌نیا ئه‌م ساڵ له‌ مینێسۆتا،

we've passed a historic, first-in-the-country tax credit.

The Beginning Farmer Tax Credit.

It incentivizes our transition of land

from the existing generation to the next generation.

That was done by a handful of us young farmers --

ئه‌وه‌ له‌لایه‌ن ژماره‌یه‌كی كه‌م له‌ ئێمه‌ی جوتیاره‌ گه‌نجه‌كان ئه‌نجامدراوه‌

we certainly don't have money, you saw that earlier.

به‌دڵنیایی یه‌وه‌ ئێمه‌ پاره‌مان نییه‌، پێشتر ئه‌وه‌تان بینی.

We don't have political experience.

ئه‌زموونی سیاسیمان نییه‌.

But we showed up, and we made our voices heard.

And thanks to the support of farmers and non-farmers alike,

we got something incredible done here in this state.

If we can do it, anybody can do it.

Now, that was all light and fuzzy and feels pretty happy.

Skeptics in the audience, you're here.

Skeptics are thinking,

"Wow, what do we need to change about our food system?"

Farmers are great.

جوتیاره‌كان مه‌زنن.

We have unlimited food, and it's real cheap, too,

ئێمه‌ خۆراكی بێسنوورمان هه‌یه‌، و زۆریش هه‌رزانه‌،

isn't that great?

ئه‌مه‌ مه‌زن نییه‌؟

Well, unfortunately,

باشه‌، به‌داخه‌وه‌،

in the '80s and the '90s in this country, we went down a path of policy

له‌ هه‌شتاكان و نه‌وه‌ده‌كان له‌و وڵاته‌، به‌ره‌و ڕێگای سیاسه‌ت ڕۆیشتین

that could be described as "get big or get out."

كه‌ ده‌توانرێت وێنه‌بكرێت وه‌كو"گه‌وره‌ " به‌ده‌ست بێنه‌ یان بڕۆده‌ره‌وه‌."

And what "get big or get out" means is you maximize production

while minimizing costs.

On its face value, that sounds pretty simple.

However, that shift turned our farmers from a venerated class

-له‌گه‌ڵ ئه‌وه‌شدا، ئه‌و گۆڕانه‌ جوتیاره‌ كانمانی گۆڕی له‌ چینێكی به‌ڕێز

and a valued class in our society

و چینێكی به‌نرخ له‌ كۆمه‌ڵگاكه‌مان

into a cost to be minimized.

That shift made it so that my great-grandfather,

ئه‌و گۆڕانه‌ وای كرد له‌به‌ر ئه‌وه‌ باپیری باپیرم،

who supported the family with six cows,

كه‌ هانی خێزانی خاوه‌ن شه‌ش مانگای دا،

that same dairy,

هه‌مان ئه‌و شیره‌مه‌نییه‌،

trying to support their family, has to be 600 cows today.

Six-thousand-cow dairies are not unheard of.

What happens when there's this one dairy farm

in an entire county,

where there used to be hundreds?

The same could be said with corn or beans or field crops.

What happens when it takes 10,000 acres for one person to support themselves?

When it used to only take 40.

We know what happens, we read about it in the news.

Broadly determined, rural decline,

know this story well.

This is not a problem that we can solve with farmers markets and good intentions.

We have to do more for our farmers.

پێویسته‌ له‌سه‌رمان زیاتر بۆ جوتیاره‌كانمان بكه‌ین.

Policy got us into this mess,

سیاسه‌ت ئێمه‌ی گه‌یانده‌ ئه‌و گێژاوه‌،

and policy can get us out.

و سیاسه‌ت ده‌توانێت ده‌رمان بێنێت.

American farmers are only getting older, fewer and poorer,

جوتیاره‌ ئه‌مریكییه‌كان ته‌نیا گه‌وره‌تر و كه‌مترو پیرتر ده‌بن،

yet they are crucial to our state.

هێشتاش زۆر گرنگن بۆ وڵاته‌كه‌مان.

They're the vibrancy in our rural communities.

ئه‌وان ژێوه‌ری كۆمه‌ڵگا لادێی یه‌كانمانن.

They're the drivers of economic growth and stability,

ئه‌وان لێخوڕی گه‌شه‌سه‌ندنی ئابووری و جێگیر یین.

and they are our best protectors of our shared resources

و ئه‌وان باشترین پارێزه‌ری سه‌رچاوه‌ هاوبه‌شه‌كانمانن

of land, water and air.

له‌ خاك ،هه‌واو ئاو.

So we have to do better for them.

بۆیه‌ پێویسته‌ باشتربین بۆیان.

So join me, would you?

بۆیه‌ وه‌رنه‌پاڵم، دێن؟

Let's fight for our farmers.

با شه‌ڕ بۆ جوتیاره‌كانمان بكه‌ین.

You can see it,

ده‌توانن بیبینن،

we're already doing it in Minnesota, having great success.

ئێمه‌ پێشتر له‌ مینوسۆتا ئه‌وه‌مان ده‌كرد سه‌ركه‌وتنی باشمان به‌ده‌ست ده‌هێنا.

And together, we can do even more.

و به‌یه‌كه‌وه‌، ده‌توانین هێشتا زیاتر بكه‌ین.

And we must.

و پێویسته‌ له‌سه‌رمان.

So we were voting with our fork before,

پێشتر به‌ چه‌تاڵه‌كانمان ده‌نگمان ده‌دا،

and we want to keep doing that.

و ده‌مانه‌وێت به‌رده‌وام ئه‌وه‌ بكه‌ین.

But if I could have one idea for you to go home with today,
