I'm going to talk to you tonight

I think we all have closets.

Your closet may be telling someone

It is scary, and we hate it, and it needs to be done.

Several years ago,

I was working at the South Side Walnut Cafe,

and during my time there I would go through phases

the question would often be sprung on me,

And there would be an awkward silence at the table.

I'd clench my jaw a little tighter,

and the mom would shoot a chilling stare at her kid.

But I would say nothing,

And it got to the point where every time I walked up

And that is a terrible feeling.

So I promised myself, the next time, I would say something.

Familiar silence, but this time I'm ready,

I've even got this little bit from "Vagina Monologues" I'm going to do.

So I take a deep breath and I look down

저는 깊은 숨을 들이쉬고 내려다 봅니다.

and staring back at me is a four-year-old girl in a pink dress,

not a challenge to a feminist duel,

just a kid with a question:

So I take another deep breath,

squat down to next to her, and say,

"Hey, I know it's kind of confusing.

"아가, 좀 헷갈리지?

My hair is short like a boy's,

and I wear boy's clothes, but I'm a girl,

and you know how sometimes you like to wear a pink dress,

우리가 가끔은 분홍색 옷을 입고 싶기도 하고

and sometimes you like to wear your comfy jammies?

또 어떤 때는 편한 잠옷을 입고 싶기도 하잖아?

Well, I'm more of a comfy jammies kind of girl."

나는 분홍색 옷 보다는 편한 잠옷을 좋아하는 여자란다."

And this kid looks me dead in the eye,

그러자 그 아이는 저의 눈을 뚫어져라 쳐다보며

without missing a beat, and says,

제가 하는 말에 주의를 기울이면서 말합니다.

"My favorite pajamas are purple with fish.

"저는 물고기가 수 놓아진 보라색 잠옷을 좋아해요.

Can I get a pancake, please?"

팬케익 좀 주세요."

(Laughter)

And that was it. Just, "Oh, okay. You're a girl.

그냥 그게 끝입니다. 그냥 "아, 여자구나.

How about that pancake?"

팬케익이나 먹을까?."라고 하는 겁니다.

It was the easiest hard conversation

그 대화는 제가 했던 꺼내기 힘은 대화 중에

I have ever had.

가장 쉬웠던 대화였습니다.

And why? Because Pancake Girl and I,

we were both real with each other.

So like many of us,

I've lived in a few closets in my life, and yeah,

most often, my walls happened to be rainbow.

But inside, in the dark,

you can't tell what color the walls are.

You just know what it feels like to live in a closet.

So really, my closet is no different than yours

Sure, I'll give you 100 reasons

why coming out of my closet was harder than coming out of yours,

but here's the thing: Hard is not relative.

Hard is hard.

There is no harder, there is just hard.

We need to stop ranking our hard against everyone else's hard

우리는 더 위안 받을지, 더 고통 받을지도 모르면서

to make us feel better or worse about our closets

자신의 비밀과 다른 사람의 비밀 중에 어떤 것이 더 힘든지 비교하지 말아야 합니다.

and just commiserate on the fact that we all have hard.

그리고 우리는 모두 똑같이 힘들어 하는 것을 위로해야 합니다.

At some point in our lives, we all live in closets,

and they may feel safe,

or at least safer than what lies on the other side of that door.

no matter what your walls are made of,

a closet is no place for a person to live.

So imagine yourself 20 years ago.

Me, I had a ponytail, a strapless dress,

and high-heeled shoes.

I was not the militant lesbian

저는 군인같은 외모를 하고

ready to fight any four-year-old that walked into the cafe.

I was frozen by fear, curled up in the corner

저는 제 자신의 캄캄한 비밀 벽장 구석에 쪼그리고 앉아

of my pitch-black closet

두려움에 떨고 있었습니다.

clutching my gay grenade,

동성애자라는 수류탄을 손에 쥐고 있어서

and moving one muscle is the scariest thing

I have ever done.

My family, my friends, complete strangers --

I had spent my entire life

trying to not disappoint these people,

and now I was turning the world upside down

on purpose.

I was burning the pages of the script

we had all followed for so long,

but if you do not throw that grenade, it will kill you.

One of my most memorable grenade tosses

was at my sister's wedding.

It was the first time that many in attendance

knew I was gay, so in doing my maid of honor duties,

in my black dress and heels,

I walked around to tables

and finally landed on a table of my parents' friends,

folks that had known me for years.

And after a little small talk, one of the women shouted out,

And the battle of gay relatability had begun.

"Well, yeah, actually, we have friends in San Francisco."

"Well, we've never been there but we've heard it's fabulous."

"Ash, do you know my hairdresser Antonio?

"애쉬, 내가 가는 미용실에 미용사 안토니오 알아?

He's really good and he has never talked about a girlfriend."

머리는 잘 하는데, 여자 친구에 대해서 얘기하는 걸 들어 본 적이 없어."

"Ash, what's your favorite TV show?

"애쉬, 좋아하는 TV 쇼가 뭐야?

Our favorite TV show? Favorite: Will & Grace.

우리가 좋아하는 TV 쇼는 윌과 그레이스야.

And you know who we love? Jack.

그리고 우리가 좋아하는 사람은 잭이고.

Jack is our favorite."

우리는 잭을 가장 좋아해."

And then one woman, stumped

그리고 나서 한 여자가 어쩔 줄 몰라하며

but wanting so desperately to show her support,

저를 지지한다는 것을 필사적으로 보여주고 싶어하며

to let me know she was on my side,

자신이 제 편이라는 것을 표시하려고

she finally blurted out,

이렇게 내뱉었습니다.

"Well, sometimes my husband wears pink shirts."

"제 남편은 가끔 분홍색 셔츠를 입어요."

And I had a choice in that moment,

as all grenade throwers do.

I could go back to my girlfriend and my gay-loving table

and mock their responses,

chastise their unworldliness and their inability

to jump through the politically correct gay hoops I had brought with me,

or I could empathize with them

아니면, 그들과 공감을 나누면서

and realize that that was maybe one of the hardest things they had ever done,

저와 대화했던 것이 그 사람들이 살면서 겪은 가장 힘든 일일수 있었으며

that starting and having that conversation

저와 대화를 시작하고 대화를 나눈 것이

was them coming out of their closets.

그 사람들에게 있어서는 커밍아웃이었다는 것을 깨달을 수도 있었겠지요.

Sure, it would have been easy to point out where they felt short.

물론 그 사람들이 불편해 했던 점을 지적하는 것은 좀 더 쉬웠을 수도 있습니다.

It's a lot harder to meet them where they are

그 사람들의 입장을 이해하고

and acknowledge the fact that they were trying.

그들이 노력하고 있다는 것을 아는 것이 아주 더 힘든 일이니까요.

And what else can you ask someone to do but try?

다른 사람에게 노력하라는 말 외에 어떤 말을 할 수 있을까요?

If you're going to be real with someone,

다른 사람을 진심으로 대하려고 한면

you gotta be ready for real in return.

진심이 되돌아올 것이라는 점을 아셔야 합니다.

So hard conversations are still not my strong suit.

그래요, 아직 저는 힘든 이야기를 하는 방법을 완벽하게 소화하진 못했습니다.

Ask anybody I have ever dated.

제가 데이트 했던 사람에게 물어보면 아실겁니다.

But I'm getting better, and I follow what I like to call

the three Pancake Girl principles.

세가지 법칙을 따르고 있습니다.

Now, please view this through gay-colored lenses,

자, 그럼 이 법칙을 동성애자의 입장에서 이해해 보세요.

but know what it takes to come out of any closet

하지만, 어떤 비밀 벽장에서 나오더라도

is essentially the same.

그것은 근본적으로 모두 같다는 것을 알아두세요.

Number one: Be authentic.

첫번째 원칙: 진심으로.

Take the armor off. Be yourself.

That kid in the cafe had no armor,

but I was ready for battle.

If you want someone to be real with you,

they need to know that you bleed too.

Number two: Be direct. Just say it. Rip the Band-Aid off.

If you know you are gay, just say it.

If you tell your parents you might be gay,

Do not give them that sense of false hope.

And number three, and most important --

Be unapologetic.

You are speaking your truth.

Never apologize for that.

And some folks may have gotten hurt along the way,

so sure, apologize for what you've done,

but never apologize for who you are.

And yeah, some folks may be disappointed,

The only story that matters

So the next time you find yourself

in a pitch-black closet clutching your grenade,

know we have all been there before.

And you may feel so very alone, but you are not.
