David Deutsch: A new way to explain explanation

I'm sure that,

throughout the 100,000-odd years of our species' existence

and even before,

OK, so, most people only wondered that occasionally, like today,

in breaks from whatever normally preoccupied them.

쉴 때나 놀 때만 가끔 그런 생각을

But what normally preoccupied them also involved yearning to know.

하지만 그들이 보통 때 하던 일 자체가

종종 지식을 추구하는 것이기도 했어요.

They wished they knew

how to prevent their food supply from sometimes failing,

중단되는 것을 방지하는 법을

알면 좋겠다고 생각했었죠.

and how they could rest when they were tired

또 어떻게 굶주림의 위험을 무릅쓰지 않고서도

without risking starvation,

피곤할 때는 쉴 수 있을까,

be warmer, cooler, safer,

고통이 덜하면서도 따뜻하고, 시원하게,

in less pain.

그리고 안전하게 있을 수 있을까 고민했죠.

I bet those prehistoric cave artists would have loved to know

선사시대의 동굴 화가들은

how to draw better.

정말 알고 싶어했을거에요.

어떤 측면에서 보든지

In every aspect of their lives,

they wished for progress, just as we do.

그들은 지금의 우리처럼 진보를 원했습니다.

But they failed, almost completely, to make any.

그러나 진보를 이루는데는 거의 완전히 실패했죠.

They didn't know how to.

방법을 몰랐으니까요.

Discoveries like fire happened so rarely

불의 발견 같은 것은

극히 드물게 생기는 일이기 때문에, 개인의 입장에서 보면

that, from an individual's point of view,

the world never improved.

세상에 발전 같은 것은 없었지요.

Nothing new was learned.

새롭게 배우는 것이 전혀 없었어요.

The first clue to the origin of starlight

별빛의 근원에 대한 첫 실마리를 제공했던 것은

happened as recently as 1899:

1899년에야 제시되었던 방사능설이었습니다.

radioactivity.

And within 40 years,

그 후, 불과 40년 이내로

physicists discovered the whole explanation,

expressed, as usual, in elegant symbols.

But never mind the symbols.

Think how many discoveries they represent.

Nuclei and nuclear reactions, of course.

But isotopes,

particles of electricity,

antimatter,

neutrinos,

the conversion of mass to energy -- that's E=mc2 --

gamma rays,

감마선,

transmutation.

핵변환.

That ancient dream that had always eluded the alchemists

연금술사들이 끝내 이루지 못했던 고대의 꿈은

was achieved through these same theories

별빛을 비롯한 다른 고대인의 신비 및

that explained starlight and other ancient mysteries

기타 다른 현대의 수수께끼를

and new, unexpected phenomena.

That all that, discovered in 40 years,

had not been in the previous hundred thousand

was not for lack of thinking

They even arrived at answers, such as myths,

yet bore almost no resemblance to the truth.

The tragedy of that protracted stagnation

인류의 발전이 이처럼 오랫동안 침체되고 있었다는

isn't sufficiently recognized, I think.

비극적인 사실을 생각해 보는 사람들은 많지 않지요.

These were people with brains of essentially the same design

고대인의 두뇌는

핵반응 등을 발견한 현대인의 두뇌와

that eventually did discover all those things.

근본적으로 같습니다.

But that ability to make progress

그러나 그들을 발전시킬 수 있었던 그들의 재능은

remained almost unused,

근대에 와서 인류의 생활 여건과

until the event that revolutionized the human condition

우주를 보는 우리의 생각을

완전히 탈바꿈 시킨 이벤트가 생겼을때까지

거의 낭비됐었지요.

and changed the universe.

Or so we should hope,

저는 제 생각이 맞기를 바랍니다.

because that event was the scientific revolution,

제가 이 말을 하는 이유는

제가 방금 말씀드린

ever since which our knowledge of the physical world

이벤트라는 것은 바로 과학혁명인데

물리적 세계에 대한 우리의 지식과

and of how to adapt it to our wishes

문명의 이기는 바로 과학의 힘으로

has been growing relentlessly.

지금 끊임없이 발전하고 있기 때문입니다.

Now, what had changed?

그러면 고전시대에 비해 바뀐 점이 무엇일까요?

What were people now doing for the first time

오랜 기간동안

that made that difference between stagnation

발전이 침체된 상태에 있던 우리 인류가

무엇을 처음으로 시도했길래

and rapid, open-ended discovery?

우리가 현재의 신속하고 끝없는 발전의 시대로 접어들었을까요?

How to make that difference

지난 몇백년 동안 무엇이 바뀌였는지는

is surely the most important universal truth

우리들이 알아 낼 수 있을 것이며 이것은 분명히 우리에게

that it's possible to know.

가장 중요한 진리일 것입니다.

And worryingly, there's no consensus about what it is.

그러나 불행히도 그것이 무엇이라는 것에는 아직 일반적인 동의가 없습니다.

So, I'll tell you.

그래서 그것이 무엇인지 제가 말씀드리지요.

But I'll have to backtrack a little first.

Before the scientific revolution,

과학혁명이 일어나기 전에는

they believed that everything important, knowable,

was already known,

enshrined in ancient writings, institutions

각종 기관들, 그리고 실지로 유용한 경험법칙 안에

and in some genuinely useful rules of thumb --

which were, however, entrenched as dogmas,

along with many falsehoods.

So, they believed that knowledge came from authorities

that actually knew very little.

And therefore,

progress depended on learning how to reject

the authority of learned men, the priests, traditions and rulers,

which is why the scientific revolution had to have a wider context:

the Enlightenment, a revolution in how people sought knowledge,

어떻게 사람들이 지식을 구할 수 있는지를

trying not to rely on authority.

탐구했던 혁명이었지요

"Take no one's word for it."

"누구의 말도 그대로 받아들이지 말라"는 것이었지요.

But that can't be what made the difference.

그러나 그것이 변화를 가져왔었다고는 할 수 없습니다.

Authorities had been rejected before, many times.

권위층을 거부했던 사례는 많이 있으니까요.

And that rarely, if ever,

그런 행위가 과학혁명 같은 것을

초래했던 사례는 없었다고 해도 과언이 아니지요.

caused anything like the scientific revolution.

At the time, what they thought distinguished science

그 당시의 사람들에게 과학은

다른 사고체계와는 달리

was a radical idea about things unseen,

눈으로 볼 수 없는 것들에 대해 혁신적인 아이디어를 제시했다고 생각했지요.

known as empiricism --

이것이 경험주의 철학입니다.

all knowledge derives from the senses.

모든 지식은 감각으로 부터 유래한다는 말이 있지만

Well, we've seen that that can't be true.

우리는 과거의 경험으로 보아 그것이 사실이 아니라는 것을 알지요.

It did help by promoting observation and experiment.

그러나 그런 사고방식은 관찰과 실험을 장려했기 때문에

도움이 됐던것은 사실이지요.

But, from the outset,

그렇지만 애당초부터 어디엔가 확실히

it was obvious that there was something horribly wrong with it.

잘못된 부분이 있다는 것은 분명했지요.

Knowledge comes from the senses?

지식이 감각을 통해 우리에게 전달된다고요?

In what language?

그렇다면 어떤 언어를 통해서 그 지식이 우리에게 전달될까요?

Certainly not the language of mathematics, in which, Galileo rightly said,

자연이라는 책은 수학 언어로 쓰여져 있다는 갈릴레오의 말은

the book of nature is written.

옳지만 우리는 물론 자연으로 부터 직접 수학을 읽는게 아니지요.

Look at the world.

우리의 주위를 둘러보세요. 산의 암벽에는

You don't see equations carved on the mountainsides.

방정식이 새겨져있지 않지요.

If you did, it would be because people had carved them.

만약에 그런걸 보셨다면 누가 그렇게

새겼기 때문이지요.

By the way, why don't we do that?

말이 난 김에 우리 어디가서 돌에 방정식을 새길까요?

What's wrong with us?

뭐가 못나서 그런 것을 못합니까?

(Laughter)

Empiricism is inadequate

경험주의론은 불충분한데

because, well, scientific theories explain the seen in terms of the unseen.

그 이유는

과학적 이론은 눈에 보이는 것을 눈에 보이지 않는 것들을 통해 설명하기 때문입니다.

And the unseen, you have to admit,

뻔한 이야기지만 눈에 보이지 않는 것들은

doesn't come to us through the senses.

감각을 통해 우리에게 전달될 수 없지요.

We don't see those nuclear reactions in stars.

우리는 별에서 일어나는 핵반응을 볼 수 없지요.

We don't see the origin of species.

종의 기원도 볼 수 없지요.

We don't see the curvature of space-time,

시공간의 휨이나 다른 우주들도

and other universes.

볼 수 없지요.

But we know about those things.

그러나 우리는 이런 것들에 대해 알고 있지요.

How?

어떻게 알까요?

Well, the classic empiricist answer is induction --

전통적인 경험론자들은 귀납적으로 안다고 하겠지요.

the unseen resembles the seen.

즉, 눈으로 볼 수 없는 어떤 것을 눈으로 볼 수 있는 어떤 다른 것과

But it doesn't.

비교해서 안다는 말인데 그건 틀린 논리이지요.

You know what the clinching evidence was that space-time is curved?

시공간이 휘었다는 것을 확정적으로 증명한 것은

시공간 자체에 대한 사진이 아니고

It was a photograph -- not of space-time,

점(點) 하나가 기대했던 위치에 있지 않고 약간 떨어진

but of an eclipse, with a dot there rather than there.

위치에 보여지는 천체의 식(蝕)을 보여주는 사진이었지요.

And the evidence for evolution?

진화론의 증명으로는 돌맹이 몇 개와

Some rocks and some finches.

갈라파고스섬의 되새류 몇 마리를 들 수 있지요.

And parallel universes?

평행우주론도 마찬가지지요. 즉, 화면의 어떤 점이

Again: dots there rather than there, on a screen.

기대했던 여기에 있는게 아니라 저기에 있다는 것이죠.

What we see in all these cases

그런데 위의 모든 증거물은 그들이 입증하려는

bears no resemblance to the reality that we conclude is responsible --

실체와는 전혀 관계가 없는 것 처럼 보이지요 --

사실 이러한 증거물들은

여러 단계의 이론적 추리와 해석 과정을 거쳐야만

only a long chain of theoretical reasoning and interpretation connects them.

주장하는 바를 입증할 수 있으니까요.

창조설 주장자들은 다음과 같이 말합니다.

"Ah!" say creationists.

"So you admit it's all interpretation.

"아, 그러면 당신들이 주장하는 것은

No one's ever seen evolution.

모두 해석에 달렸다는 것을 인정한다는 말이지?

We see rocks.

진화를 본 사람은 한명도 없고 우린 돌덩어리만 보이오.

You have your interpretation. We have ours.

당신네들의 해석은 당신이나 하쇼. 우리의 해석은 따로 있소.

Yours comes from guesswork; ours, from the Bible."

당신네는 추측이 바탕이고

우리는 성경이오."

But what creationist and empiricists both ignore

이런 경우에 제가 창조설 주장자와

is that, in that sense,

경험론자에게 하고 싶은 말은

no one's ever seen a Bible either,

that the eye only detects light, which we don't perceive.

사람의 눈은 빛만 감지하지 지각은 하지 못하며

Brains only detect nerve impulses.

두뇌는 신경자극만 감지한다는 것입니다.

And they don't perceive even those as what they really are,

뿐만 아니라 두뇌는 그것이 느끼는 것의 실체는 단순한

namely electrical crackles.

전기적 신호라는 것 조차도 모르지요.

즉, 우리는 어떠한 실체든 그것을 직접 지각할 수 없지요.

So we perceive nothing as what it really is.

Our connection to reality is never just perception.

우리와 실체성을 연결시켜주는 것은

결코 단순한 지각만은 아닙니다.

It's always, as Karl Popper put it,

칼 포퍼 교수의 말을 인용하자면

theory-laden.

이것은 항상 이론의존적이지요.

Scientific knowledge isn't derived from anything.

과학적 지식은 어떤 것에서 유도해 내는 것이 아닙니다.

Like all knowledge, it's conjectural, guesswork,

모든 지식이 그렇듯이 과학적 지식은 관찰에 의해

tested by observation,

시험을 통과한 추측이지

not derived from it.

관찰 자체로 부터 유도해 낸것이 아닙니다.

So, were testable conjectures the great innovation

그러면 시험이 가능한 추측이라는 것이

that opened the intellectual prison gates?

지적 감옥의 문을 활짝 열어준 큰 개혁이었을까요?

No, contrary to what's usually said, testability is common

아니지요. 흔히 사람들이 믿는 바와는 달리

시험을 한다는 개념은 신화를 비롯한

in myths and all sorts of other irrational modes of thinking.

여러 종류의 비논리적 사고영역에서도 흔히 찾아볼 수 있으니까요.

Any crank claiming the sun will go out next Tuesday

만약에 어떤 괴짜가 오는 화요일에 태양이 꺼질 것이라는 말을 한다면 그것은

has got a testable prediction.

시험이 가능한 예측이지요.

Consider the ancient Greek myth explaining seasons.

계절의 변화를 설명하는

고대 그리스의 신화를 생각해 보죠.

Hades, god of the underworld,

지하 세계의 신, 하데스가

봄의 여신인 페르세포네를 납치해서

kidnaps Persephone, the goddess of spring,

and negotiates a forced marriage contract, requiring her to return regularly,

정기적으로 페르세포네가 자기한테

오게 했다가 다시 풀어주는 조건의 강제 결혼계약을 맺었지요.

and lets her go.

And each year,

그래서 페르세포네는 매 년

she is magically compelled to return.

마술의 힘으로 하데스에게 끌려갔었지요

And her mother, Demeter,

그래서 페르세포네의 어머니인

goddess of the earth,

토지의 여신 데메테르는 슬퍼서

is sad, and makes it cold and barren.

추위가 오고 땅에 풀이 돋아나지 못하게 했지요.

That myth is testable.

이 신화는 시험을 할 수 있지요.

If winter is caused by Demeter's sadness,

만약에 데메테르의 슬픔 때문에 겨울이 온다면

then it must happen everywhere on earth simultaneously.

지구 어디에나 동시에 겨울이 와야겠지요.

So if the ancient Greeks had only known

그런데 만약에 고대의 그리스 사람들이

that Australia is at its warmest when Demeter is at her saddest ...

데메테르가 가장 슬플때 호주가 제일 덥다는 것을 알았다면

they'd have known that their theory is false.

그 신화가 틀렸다는 것을 알았겠지요.

(Laughter)

그럼 이 신화와 과학적 사고방식이 존재하기 전의

So, what was wrong with that myth

and with all prescientific thinking?

사고방식에 틀린점이 무었이었을까요?

And what, then, made that momentous difference?

그리고 우리가 혁신적인 발전을 할 수 있게 한것은 무엇이었을까요?

I think there's one thing you have to care about

저는 단 한가지만 고려하면 된다고 생각합니다.

이말은 즉,

and that implies testability, the scientific method,

시험가능성, 과학적 방법,

the Enlightenment and everything.

계몽사상 등을 의미하죠.

And here's the crucial thing:

결정적으로 중요한 점은 다음과 같습니다.

there is such a thing as a defect in a story.

스토리 자체에 결함이 있을 수도 있지요.

I don't just mean a logical defect.

논리적 결함이 있다는 의미가 아니고 설명이 나쁜 경우를 말합니다.

I mean a bad explanation.

What does that mean?

그게 무슨 말인지 제가 설명을 드리지요. 설명이란 것은

Well, an explanation is an assertion about what's there, unseen,

눈으로 보는 것의 근원이 되는 눈에 보이지 않는

that accounts for what's seen;

어떤 개체에 대한 강력한 주장을 말하지요.

because the explanatory role of Persephone's marriage contract

계절의 변화를 설명해 주는

페르세포네의 결혼 계약의 역할은

could be played equally well

무한한 수의 다른 아무렇게나

by infinitely many other ad hoc entities.

지어낸 이야기로도

대체될 수 있지요.

Why a marriage contract and not any other reason

계절의 변화를 설명하기 위해서 굳이 결혼 계약이나

for regular annual action?

또는 다른 이유를 댈 필요가 없지요.

Here's one: Persephone wasn't released.

예를 들어 하데스가 페르세포네를 놔준게 아니고

She escaped, and returns every spring to take revenge on Hades,

페르세포네가 탈출을 해서 하데스에게

복수를 하기 위해 매 년

with her spring powers.

봄을 가져온다고 말할 수도 있었겠지요.

She cools his domain with spring air,

페르세포네가 봄바람으로 지하세계를 식혀서

venting heat up to the surface, creating summer.

뜨거운 바람이 지표로 올라와 여름이 오게 한다는 설명을 할 수도 있었겠지요.

That accounts for the same phenomena as the original myth.

이렇게 이야기를 바꿔도 계절의 변화에 대한 설명은 똑같이 성립합니다.

It's equally testable.

이 스토리의 시험가능성은 전과 똑같습니다.

Yet what it asserts about reality is, in many ways, the opposite.

그러나 이 스토리가 실제에 대해 주장하는 바는

여러 면에서 정반대입니다.

And that's possible

이것이 가능한 이유는

because the details of the original myth are unrelated to seasons,

고대 그리스 신화에서

계절과 관련이 있는 것은

except via the myth itself.

그 신화 자체 밖에 없지요.

This easy variability

이렇게 이야기를 쉽게 바꿀수 있다는 것은

is the sign of a bad explanation,

설명이 틀렸다는 훌륭한 징조이지요.

because, without a functional reason

왜냐하면, 수없이 많은 가능성 중에서

to prefer one of countless variants,

특별한 이유 없이 특정한 이야기 하나만을

advocating one of them in preference to the others

주장하는 것은 논리적이지

is irrational.

않으니까요.

So, for the essence of what makes the difference to enable progress,

따라서, 진보를 가능케 하는

그 차이를 만드는 핵심은

seek good explanations,

눈앞의 현상을 설명하면서도

the ones that can't be easily varied,

내용은 쉽게 바꿀 수 없는

while still explaining the phenomena.

그런 좋은 설명을 추구하는 것입니다.

Now our current explanation of seasons

계절의 변동에 대한 오늘날의 설명은

is that the Earth's axis is tilted like that,

지구의 축이 이렇게 기울어져 있기 때문에

so each hemisphere tilts towards the sun for half the year,

매년 절반동안은 남반구와 북반구가 각각

and away for the other half.

햇빝을 더 받거나 또는 덜 받는다는 것입니다.

도로 세워놓는게 좋겠는데요.

Better put that up.

(Laughter)

That's a good explanation:

이것은 좋은 설명이지요. 이 이야기의 각 부분은

hard to vary,

because every detail plays a functional role.

모두 용도가 있기 때문에 쉽게 바뀔 수 없지요.

For instance, we know, independently of seasons,

예를 들면, 우리는 계절과는 상관 없이

that surfaces tilted away from radiant heat are heated less,

열을 방사하는 열원으로 부터

비스듬하게 기울어진 표면은 열을 적게 받고,

and that a spinning sphere, in space,

points in a constant direction.

And the tilt also explains

the sun's angle of elevation at different times of year,

and predicts that the seasons will be out of phase in the two hemispheres.

If they'd been observed in phase,

the theory would have been refuted.

But now, the fact that it's also a good explanation, hard to vary,

makes the crucial difference.

If the ancient Greeks had found out about seasons in Australia,

만약에 고대 그리스인들이 호주의

계절에 대해 알았다면 계절을

they could have easily varied their myth to predict that.

예측하기 위해 그들의 신화를 쉽게 바꿀 수

있었을지 모르지요.

For instance, when Demeter's upset,

예를들면, 데메테르가 화가 나면

she banishes heat from her vicinity into the other hemisphere,

자기 주위의 토지에서 열을 빼서

적도의 반대 방향으로 보내서 그곳을 여름으로 만들었다고 했겠지요.

where it makes summer.

So, being proved wrong by observation

따라서, 관찰한 내용이 사실에 부합하지 않아서

and changing their theory accordingly

still wouldn't have got the ancient Greeks one jot closer to understanding seasons,

설명 자체가 나쁘고 이야기 내용이

because their explanation was bad -- easy to vary.

계절의 변동을 이해하는 면에서 발전이 전혀 없었겠지요.

And it's only when an explanation is good

that it even matters whether it's testable.

시험할 가치가 있지요.

만약에 지구의 지축이 기울어져 있다는 설이 부정되면

If the axis-tilt theory had been refuted,

its defenders would have had nowhere to go.

위의 설명을 옹호하는 사람들은 갈곳이 없게 되겠지요.

No easily implemented change

지축이 기울었기 때문에

could make that tilt cause the same seasons in both hemispheres.

남반구와 북반구의 계절이 같다고 설명하는 것은

쉽지 않은 일이겠지요.

The search for hard-to-vary explanations is the origin of all progress.

쉽게 변하기 어려운 설명을 찾는 것이

진보의 시작입니다.

It's the basic regulating principle of the Enlightenment.

그것은 유럽의 계몽운동을 규제했던

기본 원칙이었지요.

So, in science, two false approaches blight progress.

과학의 발전을 망치는 방법은 두가지가 있지요.

One's well-known: untestable theories.

그 첫번째는 널리 알려져 있지요. 즉, 시험할 수 없는 이론을 사용하는 것이지요.

But the more important one is explanationless theories.

그러나 이보다 더 치명적인 것은 설명이 없는 이론을 사용하는 것입니다.

Whenever you're told that some existing statistical trend will continue

When someone announces that the nature-nurture debate

누가 정치적 의견의 일부가 유전적으로 형성된다는 증거를

has been settled

발견하였기 때문에 소위 말하는

because there's evidence that a given percentage of our political opinions

본성 대 양육 논쟁을 해결했다는 주장을 했지만

유전자가 어떻게 의견을 생성한다는 것을 설명하지 않으면

are genetically inherited,

but they don't explain how genes cause opinions,

그것도 아무런 영양가가 없는 말이지요.

they've settled nothing.

그런 말은 우리의 의견을 마술쟁이가 만든다는

They're saying that our opinions are caused by wizards,

말이나 마찬가지며 아마 그들의

의견도 마술쟁이가 만든다는 말이겠지요.

and presumably, so are their own.

That the truth consists of hard-to-vary assertions about reality

물리적 세계에 대한

가장 중요한 사실은

is the most important fact about the physical world.

진실은 실체에 대한 교체하기 힘든 주장으로

구성돼 있다는 것입니다.

It's a fact that is itself unseen,

그 사실 자체는 볼 수 없고

yet impossible to vary.
