I think it's safe to say

모든 사람이

that all humans will be intimate with death

at least once in their lives.

But what if that intimacy began

long before you faced your own transition

삶이 죽음으로 바뀌게 되는 개개인의 전환점 이전이라면

from life into death?

어떻겠어요?

What would life be like

죽은 사람이 여러분과 함께 살고 있다면

if the dead literally lived alongside you?

산다는 게 어떤 느낌일까요?

In my husband's homeland

제 남편의 고향인

in the highlands of Sulawesi island

술라웨시섬의 산악 지대는,

in eastern Indonesia,

동인도네시아인데요,

there is a community of people that experience death

그 곳에는 죽음을 한번의 사건이 아닌 점진적인 과정으로

not as a singular event

경험하며 살고 있는

but as a gradual social process.

사람들이 있어요.

In Tana Toraja,

타나 트로자에서는

the most important social moments in people's lives,

사람들의 삶에서 사회적으로 가장 중요한 순간,

the focal points of social and cultural interaction

즉 사회적, 문화적 교류의 중심점은

are not weddings or births or even family dinners,

결혼이나 출생, 심지어 가족이 모이는 저녁 식사도 아닌

but funerals.

장례식입니다.

So these funerals are characterized

그래서 이 장례식들은 섬세한 의식으로

by elaborate rituals

특징지을 수 있습니다.

that tie people in a system of reciprocal debt

이런 의식을 통해 사람들은 동물의 수에 근거한

based on the amount of animals --

pigs, chickens and, most importantly, water buffalo --

that are sacrificed and distributed

in the name of the deceased.

So this cultural complex surrounding death,

the ritual enactment of the end of life,

has made death the most visible

and remarkable aspect of Toraja's landscape.

Lasting anywhere from a few days

to a few weeks,

funeral ceremonies are a raucous affair,

where commemorating someone who's died

is not so much a private sadness

but more of a publicly shared transition.

오히려 대중이 공유하는 전환에 가깝습니다.

And it's a transition that's just as much

그것은 죽은 자를 기억하는 것 만큼이나

about the identity of the living

살아있는 자의 정체성을

as it is about remembrance of the dead.

확인하는 전환입니다.

So every year, thousands of visitors

매년, 수천명의 방문객들이

come to Tana Toraja to see, as it were,

타나 트로자에 있는 그대로의

this culture of death,

죽음의 문화를 보러옵니다.

and for many people these grandiose ceremonies

그리고 많은 사람들에게 있어 이런 거창한 의식과

and the length of the ceremonies

그 기간은

are somehow incommensurable

서구에서 우리가 죽음을 대하는

with the way that we face our own mortality in the West.

So even as we share death as a universal experience,

it's not experienced the same way the world over.

세상이 마치는 데 있어 똑같은 방식은 아니에요.

And as an anthropologist,

I see these differences in experience

being rooted in the cultural and social world

through which we define the phenomena around us.

이런 것을 통해 우리는 우리 주변의 현상들을 정의합니다.

So where we see an unquestionable reality,

death as an irrefutable biological condition,

Torajans see the expired corporeal form

토라잔 사람들은 유효 기간이 지난 외형적 모습을

as part of a larger social genesis.

So again, the physical cessation of life

is not the same as death.

In fact, a member of society is only truly dead

when the extended family can agree upon

and marshal the resources necessary

to hold a funeral ceremony

And this ceremony has to take place

in front of the eyes of the whole community

with everyone's participation.

So after a person's physical death,

물리적으로 한 사람이 죽은 후에

their body is placed in a special room

그들의 유해는 전통식 가옥의

in the traditional residence, which is called the tongkonan.

특별한 방에 안치됩니다. 그 집을 통코난이라고 부르죠.

And the tongkonan is symbolic

통코난은 가족의 정체성에 대한

not only of the family's identity

상징일 뿐만 아니라

but also of the human life cycle from birth to death.

태어나서 죽을 때까지 인간의 주기에 대한 상징이에요.

So essentially, the shape of the building

기본적으로 아이들이 태어나는

that you're born into is the shape

건물의 모양은

of the structure which carries you

사람을 자신의 조상들이 휴식하는 장소로

to your ancestral resting place.

데려가는 구조의 모양입니다.

Until the funeral ceremony,

장례식까지,

which can be held years after a person's physical death,

장례식은 물리적으로 사람이 사망한 후 몇 년 동안 이어질 수 있는데요,

the deceased is referred to as "to makala," a sick person,

죽은 자는 "마칼라"라고 부릅니다. 아픈 사람이란 의미지요.

or "to mama," a person who is asleep,

혹은 "토 마마" 라고도 하는데, 이건 잠자는 사람이라는 뜻이에요.

and they continue to be a member of the household.

죽은 자들은 장례식까지 그 집안의 구성원입니다.

They are symbolically fed and cared for,

그들은 상징적으로 음식도 먹고 보호도 받습니다.

and the family at this time

이 때 가족들은

will begin a number of ritual injunctions,

의식에 따라 일련의 경고를 시작합니다.

which communicates to the wider community around them

that one of their members is undergoing the transition

from this life into the afterlife

So I know what some of you must be thinking right now.

Is she really saying that these people live

with the bodies of their dead relatives?

죽은 자의 유해와 함께 산다고 하는 건가?

And that's exactly what I'm saying.

네, 그게 바로 제가 말씀드리고 있는 거예요.

But instead of giving in to the sort of visceral reaction

일종의 본능적 반응에 예속되는 대신에

we have to this idea of proximity to bodies,

proximity to death,

죽음에 대한 근접을 말합니다.

or how this notion just does not fit

into our very biological or medical

sort of definition of death,

I like to think about what the Torajan way

저는 토라자인들의 방식으로 죽음을 보는 것이

of viewing death encompasses of the human experience

인간의 경험을 어떻게 포용하는지 생각해 보기를 좋아합니다.

that the medical definition leaves out.

의학적 정의를 제외한 인간적 경험 말이에요.

I think that Torajans socially recognize

저는 토라자인들이 우리들 중 많은 사람들이 진실이라고 믿는 것을

and culturally express

사회적으로 인식하고

what many of us feel to be true

문화적으로 표현한다고 생각합니다.

despite the widespread acceptance

비록 생물 의학적인 죽음의 정의가

of the biomedical definition of death,

and that is that our relationships with other humans,

their impact on our social reality,

doesn't cease with the termination

So my husband has fond memories

그래서 제 남편은 돌아가신 할아버지와

of talking to and playing with

함께 이야기 나누고 놀았던 추억을 가지고 있습니다.

and generally being around his deceased grandfather,

그에게 있어, 돌아가신 할아버지의 곁에 있었던 것은

and for him there is nothing unnatural about this.

전혀 부자연스러운 일이 아니예요.

This is a natural part of the process

이것은 그들 가족이

as the family comes to terms with the transition

죽은 자와의 관계에서 매듭을 짓는

in their relationship to the deceased,

자연스런 과정의 일부입니다.

and this is the transition from relating to the deceased

그리고 이것은 관계를 맺은 상태로부터

as a person who's living

죽은 자에게 이르는 과정입니다.

to relating to the deceased

조상으로 죽은 자에게

as a person who's an ancestor.

산 사람으로서 관계를 갖는 것이지요.

And here you can see these wooden effigies

여기에 조상들의 이런 목재 인형을

of the ancestors,

보실 수 있습니다.

so these are people who have already been buried,

이들은 이미 매장되고

already had a funeral ceremony.

장례가 치러진 사람들이에요.

These are called tau tau.

이 인형들을 "타우 타우"라고 부릅니다.

So the funeral ceremony itself

그래서 장례식 그 자체는

embodies this relational perspective on death.

죽음에 대한 이런 관계적 시각을 형상화합니다.

It ritualizes the impact of death on families

그것은 가족과 지역 사회에 대한

and communities.

죽음의 충격을 의식화합니다.

And it's also a moment of self-awareness.

또한 자각의 순간이기도 하죠.

It's a moment when people think about who they are,

그것은 사람들이 자신은 누구인지,

their place in society,

사회 안에서 자신들의 위치,

and their role in the life cycle

그리고 삶의 주기에서 토라자라는 그들의 우주에 맞춰

in accordance with Torajan cosmology.

There's a saying in Toraja

토라자에는

that all people will become grandparents,

모든 사람들이 조부모가 될 것이라는 말이 있어요.

and what this means is that after death,

이것이 의미하는 것은 죽은 후에

we all become part of the ancestral line

우리 모두가 선조의 대열에 일부가 된다는 뜻입니다.

that anchors us between the past and the present

과거와 현재 사이로 우리를 이끌고

and will define who our loved ones are into the future.

우리가 사랑하는 사람들이 미래에 어떤 사람이 될지 정의 내린다는 것이죠.

So essentially, we all become grandparents

그래서 기본적으로 우리는 모두 우리들 다음에 오는

to the generations of human children

인류의 자손들에 대해

that come after us.

조부모가 된다는 뜻입니다.

And this metaphor of membership

확장된 인류의 가족에

in the greater human family

일원이 된다는 비유는

is the way that children also describe

어린 아이들이

the money that they invest

제물로 바치는 들소에게 그들이 바치는 돈을

in these sacrificial buffaloes

표현하는 방식입니다.

that are thought to carry people's soul

이 들소들은 사람의 영혼을

from here to the afterlife,

이승에서 저승으로 이끈다고 여겨집니다.

and children will explain

그리고 아이들은

that they will invest the money in this

부모들이 자신들에게 투자하고 자신들을 돌보느라

because they want to repay their parents

평생동안 지불한 빚을 되갚고 싶어하기 때문에

the debt for all of the years their parents spent

investing and caring for them.

But the sacrifice of buffalo

and the ritual display of wealth

also exhibits the status of the deceased,

and, by extension, the deceased's family.

So at funerals, relationships are reconfirmed

but also transformed

in a ritual drama that highlights

the most salient feature about death in this place:

its impact on life and the relationships of the living.

삶에 대한 영향 그리고 산자들의 관계 말입니다.

So all of this focus on death

죽음에 대한 이런 모든 집중이

doesn't mean that Torajans don't aspire

토라자인들이 보다 더 긴 수명에 대한 열망이 없다는 뚯은

to the ideal of a long life.

아닙니다.

They engage in many practices

그들은 건강과 장수에

thought to confer good health

좋다고 여겨지는

and survival to an advanced age.

많은 것들을 실천하죠

But they don't put much stock

하지만 그 사람들은 노환이나

in efforts to prolong life in the face of debilitating illness

또는 나이가 들었을 때, 삶을 연장하려고

or in old age.

많은 돈을 들이지는 않습니다.

It's said in Toraja that everybody has

sort of a predetermined amount of life.

It's called the sunga'.

And like a thread, it should be allowed to unspool

to its natural end.

So by having death as a part

죽음을 문화적, 사회적인 삶이라는

of the cultural and social fabric of life,

복합체의 일부로 받아들임으로써,

people's everyday decisions about their health

자신들의 건강과 보건에 대한 사람들의 일상적인 결정은

and healthcare are affected.

별다른 영향을 받지 않습니다.

The patriarch of my husband's maternal clan,

Nenet Katcha,

네넷 카트자는

is now approaching the age of 100, as far as we can tell.

저희가 아는 한, 현재 100세에 가깝습니다.

And there are increasing signs

이제 곧 "푸야"의 길에 접어들려고 한다는

that he is about to depart on his own journey for Puya.

And his death will be greatly mourned.

But I know that my husband's family

looks forward to the moment

His funeral songs will sing them a song about themselves.

And it's a story that has no discernible beginning,

그 노래에는 분간할 수 있는 시작도 없고

no foreseeable end.

예측할 수 있는 끝도 없어요.

It's a story that goes on

long after his body no longer does.

People ask me if I'm frightened or repulsed

by participating in a culture

But I see something profoundly transformative

In reality, the relationship between the living and the dead

has its own drama in the U.S. healthcare system,

where decisions about how long to stretch

the thread of life are made based on our emotional

and social ties with the people around us,

not just on medicine's ability to prolong life.

We, like the Torajans,

base our decisions about life

on the meanings and the definitions

that we ascribe to death.

So I'm not suggesting that anyone in this audience

should run out and adopt the traditions

of the Torajans.

It might be a little bit difficult

to put into play in the United States.

But I want to ask what we can gain

하지만 저는 물리적 죽음을 생물학적 과정으로만 보지 말고

from seeing physical death not only as a biological process

더 큰 인류 역사의 일부로 보는 것에서

but as part of the greater human story.

우리가 무엇을 얻을 수 있는지 묻고 싶습니다.

What would it be like to look on

유효 기간이 지난 인간의 외형을

the expired human form with love

because it's so intimately a part of who we all are?

If we could expand our definition of death

to encompass life,

we could experience death as part of life

and perhaps face death

with something other than fear.

Perhaps one of the answers to the challenges

미국의 보건 체계가 직면하고 있는

that are facing the U.S. healthcare system,

어려움에 대한 한가지 대답은 아마도

particularly in the end-of-life care,

is as simple as a shift in perspective,

and the shift in perspective in this case

would be to look at the social life of every death.

It might help us recognize that the way we limit

our conversation about death

It could change the way that we die,
