I'd like to take you back about seven years in my life.

Friday afternoon,

금요일 오후,

a few days before Christmas 2009,

2009년 크리스마스를 며칠 앞둔 날이었죠.

I was the director of operations

샌프란시스코에 있는

at a consumer products company in San Francisco,

어느 소비재 회사의 사업본부장이었던 저는

and I was called into a meeting that was already in progress.

이미 진행 중이던 한 회의에 불려 들어갔습니다.

That meeting turned out to be my exit interview.

그 회의가 제 퇴사 인터뷰가 되었죠.

I was fired, along with several others.

저는 다른 몇몇 사람들과 함께 해고되었습니다.

I was 64 years old at the time.

그 때 저는 64살이었어요.

It wasn't completely unexpected.

전혀 예상 못한 일은 아니었습니다.

I signed a stack of papers,

서류 한 뭉치에 서명하고

gathered my personal effects,

개인 물품을 챙겨

and left to join my wife

이런 상황을 전혀 모른 채

who was waiting for me at a nearby restaurant,

근처 레스토랑에서 저를 기다리고 있던

completely unaware.

아내를 만나러 갔죠.

Fast-forward several hours,

그후 몇 시간을 훌쩍 건너뛰고 보니

we both got really silly drunk.

우리는 둘 다 정신 없이 술에 취해 있더군요.

So, 40 plus years of continuous employment

40년 넘게 크고 작은 여러 회사에서

for a variety of companies, large and small,

꾸준히 유지되어 온 저의 직장인 생활이

was over.

그렇게 끝이 났습니다.

I had a good a network, a good reputation --

저는 인맥도 괜찮았고, 평판도 좋았습니다.

I thought I'd be just fine.

괜찮을 거라고 생각했어요.

I was an engineer in manufacturing and packaging,

제품 생산 및 포장 부문 엔지니어였거든요.

I had a good background.

괜찮은 이력도 갖고 있었죠.

Retirement was, like for so many people,

다른 많은 사람들이 그렇듯

simply not an option for me,

퇴직은 그냥 제 안중에 없었습니다.

so I turned to consulting for the next couple of years

그래서 그후 몇 년 간 컨설팅도 받았어요.

without any passion whatsoever.

어떤 열정도 무엇도 없이 말이죠.

And then an idea began to take root,

그러다 어떤 생각이 자리를 잡기 시작했습니다.

born from my concern for our environment.

환경에 대한 개인적인 우려에서 비롯된 거였죠.

I wanted to build my own business,

제 회사를 세워보고 싶었습니다.

폐지나 농업폐기물, 심지어 섬유폐기물 같은 쓰레기에서

designing and manufacturing biodegradable packaging from waste --

paper, agricultural, even textile waste --

생분해되는 포장재를 디자인하고 제조해

replacing the toxic, disposable plastic packaging

우리 모두가 너무 익숙해져버린

유독성 일회용 플라스틱 포장지를 대체하는 사업입니다.

to which we've all become addicted.

This is called clean technology,

이런 것을 청정 기술이라 부르는데

and it felt really meaningful to me.

저는 정말 의미 있는 일이라고 느꼈죠.

A venture that could help to reduce the billions of pounds

매년 수십억 파운드씩 버려져 우리의 땅과 강, 바다를 오염시키고

of single-use plastic packaging dumped each year,

미래 후손들이 해결해야 할 문제거리로 남는

and polluting our land, our rivers and our oceans,

일회용 플라스틱 포장재를 줄이는

and left for future generations to resolve --

벤쳐 회사를 해보고 싶었습니다.

our grandchildren,

우리 손주들과

my grandchildren.

제 손주들을 위해 말이죠.

And so now at the age of 66,

그래서 66살이 된 지금

with 40 years of experience,

40년의 경력의 저는

I became an entrepreneur for the very first time.

난생처음 사업가가 되었습니다.

But there's more.

하지만 더 한 게 있더군요.

Lots of issues to deal with:

해결해야 할 일이 많았습니다.

manufacturing, outsourcing, job creation,

제조, 아웃소싱, 일자리 창출

patents, partnerships, funding --

특허, 협력사, 투자금 확보 등등

these are all typical issues for a start-up,

이 모든 게 스타트업에게는 일상적인 문제지만

but hardly typical for me.

제게는 전혀 일상적이지 않았어요.

And a word about funding.

투자금 문제를 얘기해 볼까요.

I live and work in San Francisco,

저는 샌프란시스코에서 살고 일합니다.

and if you're looking for funding,

여러분이 투자금을 찾는 중이라면

you are typically going to compete with some very young people

보통은 첨단기술 산업의

아주 젊은 청년들과 경쟁하게 될텐데

from the high-tech industry,

and it can be very discouraging and intimidating.

이건 정말 기죽고 겁나는 일일 겁니다.

I have shoes older than most of these people.

제 신발 중에 이 청년들 대부분보다 더 오래된 게 있을 정도예요.

(Laughter)

I do.

정말이라니까요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But five years later,

하지만 5년이 지난 지금

I'm thrilled and proud to share with you

여러분에게 기쁘고 자랑스럽게 말씀드릴 수 있는데

that our revenues have doubled every year,

저희 회사는 수익이 매년 2배씩 성장해 왔고

we have no debt,

빚도 없고

we have several marquee clients,

중요 고정 고객사도 여럿 확보했으며

our patent was issued,

특허도 냈고

I have a wonderful partner

초청기부터 함께 해 온

who's been with me right from the beginning,

훌륭한 동업자가 여전히 함께 할 뿐 아니라

and we've won more than 20 awards for the work that we've done.

저희가 한 일로 20개가 넘는 상도 받았습니다.

But best of all,

하지만 무엇보다도 기쁜 건

we've made a small dent --

전 지구적 플라스틱 오염 위기에

a very small dent --

작게나마 영향을

in the worldwide plastic pollution crisis.

아주 작게라도 감소효과를 끼쳤다는 겁니다.

And I am doing the most rewarding and meaningful work of my life right now.

저는 지금 제 인생에서 가장 보람되고 의미있는 일을 하고 있습니다.

I can tell you there's lots of resources available to entrepreneurs of all ages,

모든 나이대의 사업가들에게 주어진 자원은 많지만

but what I really yearned for five years ago

5년 전 제가 정말로 원했던 것은

was to find other first-time entrepreneurs

제 나이 또래에 처음 사업을 시작한 사람을

who were my age.

찾는 것이었습니다.

I wanted to connect with them.

그들과 연락을 해보고 싶었죠.

I had no role models, absolutely none.

제게는 롤모델이 없었으니까요. 전혀 없었거든요.

That 20-something app developer from Silicon Valley

실리콘 밸리의 20대 남짓한 앱 개발자는

was not my role model.

제 롤모델이 아니었습니다.

(Laughter)

그야 물론 당연히 엄청 똑똑하겠죠.

I'm sure he was very clever --

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I want to do something about that,

저는 이걸 바꾸는데 뭔가를 하고 싶습니다.

우리 모두가 뭔가를 했으면 좋겠습니다.

and I want all of us to do something about that.

저는 노년이 되도록 사업가가 되지 않는

I want us to start talking more

about people who don't become entrepreneurs until they are seniors.

사람들에 대해 더 많이 얘기했으면 합니다.

Talking about these bold men and women who are checking in

동년배들이 실질적으로 빠져나가는 그 시점에

when their peers, in essence, are checking out.

새로 뛰어드는 과감한 사람들에 대해 얘기했으면 합니다.

And then connecting all these people across industries, across regions,

그리곤 산업과 지역, 국가를 초월해

그 사람들을 연결하고

across countries --

building a community.

커뮤니티를 만드는 거죠.

You know, the Small Business Administration tells us

미 중소기업청에 따르면

that 64 percent of new jobs created in the private sector in the USA

미국 민간부문에서 창출되는 일자리 중 64%가

are thanks to small businesses like mine.

제 것과 같은 소규모 기업이 만든 것이라고 합니다.

And who's to say that we'll stay forever small?

그리고 우리가 평생 소규모일 거라고 누가 장담합니까?

We have an interesting culture

우리에겐 재미난 문화가 있는데

that really expects when you reach a certain age,

어떤 특정 나이가 되면

you're going to be golfing, or playing checkers,

골프를 하거나 서양장기를 하거나

늘 손주를 봐주고 있을 거라고 생각하는 겁니다.

or babysitting the grandkids all of the time.

And I adore my grandchildren --

저도 제 손주들 끔찍이 사랑합니다.

(Laughter)

and I'm also passionate

하지만 세계 시장에서

about doing something meaningful in the global marketplace.

뭔가 의미있는 일을 하고 싶은 열정도 있습니다.

And I'm going to have lots of company.

제 회사 수도 많이 늘일 겁니다.

The Census Bureau says that by 2050,

미 통계청에 따르면 2050년이 되면

there will be 84 million seniors in this country.

미국내 노인 인구가 8천 4백만이 된다고 합니다.

That's an amazing number.

엄청난 숫자죠.

That's almost twice as many as we have today.

지금의 거의 2배에 달하는 숫자입니다.

Can you imagine how many first-time entrepreneurs there will be

그 8천 4백만 중에서 처음 사업을 하는 사람이 몇이나 될지

among 84 million people?

상상이 되시나요?

And they'll all have four decades of experience.

다들 40년의 경력은 갖고 있죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So when I say, "Let's start talking more about these wonderful entrepreneurs,"

그러니까 제가 "이 멋진 사업가들에 대해 더 얘기해보자"고 말하는 것은

I mean, let's talk about their ventures,

그들보다 훨씬 어린 사업가들의 벤처에 대해 애기하듯

just as we do the ventures of their much younger counterparts.

그들의 벤처에 대해서도 그렇게 한 번 해보자는 뜻이죠.

The older entrepreneurs in this country have a 70 percent success rate

우리나라의 노년 사업가들이 새 벤처를 시작하면서

거두는 성공률은 70%에 달합니다.

starting new ventures.

70 percent success rate.

70%의 성공률.

We're like the Golden State Warriors of entrepreneurs --

사업계의 (프로농구 구단) 골든스테이트 워리어스라고나 할까요.

(Laughter)

And that number plummets to 28 percent for younger entrepreneurs.

이 숫자는 젊은 사업가로 가면 28%로 뚝 떨어집니다.

This is according to a UK-based group called CMI.

영국에 기반을 둔 CMI의 자료에 따르면 말이죠.

70대 사업가가 거둔 성공도

Aren't the accomplishments of a 70-year-old entrepreneur

every bit as meaningful,

30대 기업가가 거둔 성공 못지 않게

every bit as newsworthy,

모든 부분이 의미있고

as the accomplishments of a 30-year-old entrepreneur?

모든 부분이 기사거리인 거 아닌가요?

물론 그렇죠.

Of course they are.

That's why I'd like to make the phrase "70 over 70" just as --

그것이 "70세 이상 70인" 이라는 문구를

(Laughter)

(웃음)

just as commonplace as the phrase "30 under 30."

"30세 이하 30인"만큼 일상적인 문구로 만들고픈 이유입니다.
