You know when the Large Hadron Collider started,

and it didn't work, and people tried to work out why,

And so if you ask this question:

Where would you look to see the future of education?

The answer that we've traditionally given to that

is very straightforward, at least in the last 20 years:

You go to Finland.

Finland is the best place in the world to see school systems.

The Finns may be a bit boring and depressive and there's a very high suicide rate,

but by golly, they are qualified.

And they have absolutely amazing education systems.

So we all troop off to Finland,

So I ended up in places like this.

This is a place called Monkey Hill.

It's one of the hundreds of favelas in Rio.

Most of the population growth of the next 50 years

will be in cities.

We'll grow by six cities of 12 million people a year

This is a guy called Juanderson.

At the age of 14,

in common with many 14-year-olds in the Brazilian education system,

he dropped out of school.

It was boring.

And Juanderson, instead, went into

in the place that he lived, which was the drugs trade.

And by the age of 16, with rapid promotion,

Or you can go to places like this.

This is Kibera, which is the largest slum in East Africa.

이 곳은 동아프리카의 가장 큰 슬럼가인, '키베라' 입니다.

Millions of people living here,

수백만명의 사람들이 반경 수km의

stretched over many kilometers.

빈민가에서 생활하고 있는 곳이죠.

And there I met these two,

Azra on the left, Maureen on the right.

They just finished their Kenyan certificate

of secondary education.

That name should tell you that the Kenyan education system

borrows almost everything

from Britain, circa 1950,

but has managed to make it even worse.

So there are schools in slums like this.

They're places like this.

That's where Maureen went to school.

They're private schools. There are no state schools in slums.

And the education they got was pitiful.

It was in places like this. This a school set up by some nuns

in another slum called Nakuru.

Half the children in this classroom have no parents

because they've died through AIDS.

The other half have one parent

So the challenges of education

in this kind of place

are not to learn the kings and queens of Kenya or Britain.

케냐 또는 영국의 왕이나 여왕에 대한 것이 아니라,

They are to stay alive, to earn a living,

생존하는 법, 생활비를 버는 법,

to not become HIV positive.

에이즈에 걸리지 않는 법을 가르쳐야 합니다.

The one technology that spans rich and poor

이런 곳에서 가난한 사람과 부자인 사람을

in places like this

아우를 수 있는 하나의 기술은

is not anything to do with industrial technology.

It's not to do with electricity or water.

It's the mobile phone.

If you want to design from scratch

virtually any service in Africa,

you would start now with the mobile phone.

Or you could go to places like this.

This is a place called the Madangiri Settlement Colony,

which is a very developed slum

about 25 minutes outside New Delhi,

where I met these characters

who showed me around for the day.

The remarkable thing about these girls,

and the sign of the kind of social revolution

개발도상국을 휩쓸고 있는

sweeping through the developing world

사회 변혁의 신호이기도 한데요.

is that these girls are not married.

바로 이 소녀들이 아직 미혼이라는 사실입니다.

Ten years ago, they certainly would have been married.

10년전만 해도, 그들은 이미 결혼한 상태였을 것입니다.

Now they're not married, and they want to go on

하지만 지금은 아니죠. 그들은 지금

to study further, to have a career.

학업을 계속하고, 직업을 갖고 싶어 합니다.

They've been brought up by mothers who are illiterate,

who have never ever done homework.

All across the developing world there are millions of parents --

tens, hundreds of millions --

are with children doing homework and exams.

And the reason they carry on studying

is not because they went to a school like this.

This is a private school.

This is a fee-pay school. This is a good school.

This is the best you can get

in Hyderabad in Indian education.

하이데라바드에서 가장 좋은 학교죠.

The reason they went on studying was this.

그들이 이 학교를 다니고자 했던 이유는 따로 있습니다.

This is a computer installed in the entrance to their slum

이것은 슬럼가 입구에 설치된 컴퓨터 입니다.

by a revolutionary social entrepreneur

혁명적 사회사업가인

called Sugata Mitra

who has conducted the most radical experiments,

showing that children, in the right conditions,

정상적인 환경에서는 아이들은

can learn on their own with the help of computers.

컴퓨터의 도움을 받아 스스로 학습한다는 사실을 증명했습니다.

Those girls have never touched Google.

이 소녀들은 한번도 구글을 본 적이 없습니다.

They know nothing about Wikipedia.

위키피디아도 모르죠.

Imagine what their lives would be like

if you could get that to them.

So if you look, as I did,

여러분들도 저처럼

through this tour,

and by looking at about a hundred case studies

of different social entrepreneurs

working in these very extreme conditions,

100여가지의 사례들을 통해서

look at the recipes that they come up with for learning,

학습에 대해 그들이 생각한 방안을 살펴보면

they look nothing like school.

그들에게 있어서 학교란 다른 의미를 갖습니다.

What do they look like?

그렇다면 어떤 의미를 가질까요?

Well, education is a global religion.

교육이란 세계적인 신앙이라고 할 수 있습니다.

And education, plus technology,

교육에 기술이 더해지면

is a great source of hope.

놀라운 희망의 원천이 될 수 있습니다.

You can go to places like this.

이런 지역도 있습니다.

This is a school three hours outside of Sao Paulo.

이 곳은 상파울루에서 3시간 거리의 외곽에 있는 학교입니다.

Most of the children there have parents who are illiterate.

그곳 아이들 대부분은 부모가 문맹이고,

Many of them don't have electricity at home.

대부분의 가정에는 전기도 들어오지 않습니다.

But they find it completely obvious

하지만 이 아이들은

to use computers, websites,

컴퓨터로 인터넷을 하고,

make videos, so on and so forth.

When you go to places like this

what you see is that

education in these settings

works by pull, not push.

Most of our education system is push.

우리 교육시스템의 대부분은 강압적으로 이루어집니다.

I was literally pushed to school.

전 그야말로 학교에 강제로 보내졌습니다.

When you get to school, things are pushed at you:

학교에서도, 모든 것이 강압적입니다.

knowledge, exams,

지식, 시험,

systems, timetables.

학교체제, 시간표 등..

If you want to attract people like Juanderson

아까 소개한 후안더슨처럼,

who could, for instance,

마약거래를 통해

buy guns, wear jewelry,

총을 사고, 보석으로 치장하며,

ride motorbikes and get girls

바이크를 타고 다니며 여자를 꼬드기는

through the drugs trade,

그런 아이들이

and you want to attract him into education,

교육에 관심을 갖도록 하는데에는

having a compulsory curriculum doesn't really make sense.

강압적인 교육과정은 통하지 않습니다.

That isn't really going to attract him.

그렇게 해서는 절대로 교육에 흥미를 갖게 할 수 없어요.

You need to pull him.

스스로 참여하도록 이끌어야 합니다.

And so education needs to work by pull, not push.

교육은 이끄는 것입니다. 떠미는게 아니에요.

And so the idea of a curriculum

이런 환경에서는 교육과정의 개념은

is completely irrelevant in a setting like this.

You need to start education

from things that make a difference

to them in their settings.

What does that?

Well, the key is motivation, and there are two aspects to it.

One is to deliver extrinsic motivation,

that education has a payoff.

Our education systems all work

on the principle that there is a payoff,

but you have to wait quite a long time.

That's too long if you're poor.

Waiting 10 years for the payoff from education

is too long when you need to meet daily needs,

when you've got siblings to look after

or a business to help with.

So you need education to be relevant and help people

to make a living there and then, often.

And you also need to make it intrinsically interesting.

So time and again, I found people like this.

This is an amazing guy, Sebastiao Rocha,

These things, they teach through.

They attract people to learning

because it's really a dance project

or a circus project

서커스 과목도 있죠.

or, the best example of all --

특히, 그 중에 가장 대표적인 사례가

El Sistema in Venezuela --

베네주엘라의 '엘 시스테마'라는

it's a music project.

음악교육 프로젝트입니다.

And so you attract people through that into learning,

이런 활동을 통해서 학습에 흥미를 갖게 되는 것이죠.

not adding that on after

모든 학습이 끝나고

all the learning has been done

인지력이 다 사라진 후에

and you've eaten your cognitive greens.

덧붙여서 하게되는 활동이 아닙니다.

So El Sistema in Venezuela

베네주얼라의 엘 에스티마에서는

uses a violin as a technology of learning.

바이올린을 학습도구로 활용합니다.

Taio Rocha uses making soap

타이오 로카는 비누만들기를

as a technology of learning.

학습수단으로 활용하죠.

And what you find when you go to these schemes

이런 교육방법에서 알 수 있는 것은

is that they use people and places

그들은 아이들과 지역 특성을

in incredibly creative ways.

놀라울 정도로 창의적인 방법으로 활용한다는 사실입니다.

Masses of peer learning.

여러 개별학습이 가능하죠.

How do you get learning to people

그럼, 선생님도 없는 상태로

when there are no teachers,

어떻게 학생들을 불러 모을 수 있을까요.

when teachers won't come, when you can't afford them,

올 선생님도 없고, 선생님을 부를 형편도 안되는 상황에서 말이죠.

and even if you do get teachers,

설령 선생님을 구하더라도

what they teach isn't relevant to the communities that they serve?

그들 사회에 전혀 도움도 안되는 내용을 가르친다면 어떻게 하죠?

Well, you create your own teachers.

그렇다면, 스스로 선생님을 만들면 되는겁니다.

You create peer-to-peer learning,

일대일로 학습한다거나,

or you create para-teachers, or you bring in specialist skills.

선생님에 준하는 인물을 통해, 전문적 능력을 끌어모으는 거죠.

But you find ways to get learning that's relevant to people

하지만, 교육수단, 사람, 장소가 모두 다르기 때문에

through technology, people and places that are different.

대상에 따라 다른 교육방법을 찾아야 합니다.

So this is a school in a bus

이것은 버스로 만든 학교입니다.

on a building site

인도 퓨너의 건설지구에 있죠.

in Pune, the fastest growing city in Asia.

퓨너는 아시에서 가장 빠른 성장을 보이는 도시로서

Pune has 5,000 building sites.

약 5000개의 건설지구가 있고,

It has 30,000 children

약 3만명의 아이들이

on those building sites.

그곳에 살고 있습니다.

That's one city.

도시 하나만해도 그정도 입니다.

Imagine that urban explosion

모든 개발도상국에 걸쳐서

that's going to take place across the developing world

도시가 폭발적으로 늘어난다고 생각해보세요.

and how many thousands of children

얼마나 많은 아이들이

will spend their school years on building sites.

건설현장에서 학창시절을 보내겠습니까.

Well, this is a very simple scheme

버스안에서 아이들을 가르친다는 생각은

to get the learning to them through a bus.

정말 단순한 발상이죠.

And they all treat learning,

하지만 그들은

not as some sort of academic, analytical activity,

학습을 일종의 학문적이고, 분석적 활동이 아니라

but as that's something that's productive,

생산적이고, 창조적이며,

something you make,

무언가 할 수있고,

something that you can do, perhaps earn a living from.

So I met this character, Steven.

He'd spent three years in Nairobi living on the streets

because his parents had died of AIDS.

부모님이 에이즈로 세상을 떠났기 때문이죠.

And he was finally brought back into school,

not by the offer of GCSEs,

검정고시(GCSE)를 보기 위해서가 아니라

but by the offer of learning how to become a carpenter,

목수가 되기 위한 과정을 배우기 위해서였습니다.

a practical making skill.

So the trendiest schools in the world,

요즘 세계적인 교육추세는

High Tech High and others,

Here, there isn't really an option.

Learning has to be productive

in order for it to make sense.

And finally, they have a different model of scale,

and it's a Chinese restaurant model

마치 중국음식점 처럼

of how to scale.

영역을 넓혀가는 형태죠.

And I learned it from this guy,

who is an amazing character.

He's probably the most remarkable social entrepreneur

아마도 이 사람은 가장 훌륭한 사회사업가일지도 모릅니다.

in education in the world.

His name is Madhav Chavan,

그의 이름은 마드하브 차반입니다.

and he created something called Pratham.

프라담(Pratham)이라는 단체를 만들었죠.

And Pratham runs preschool play groups

지금 프라담은 이천백만 인도어린이들을 대상으로

for, now, 21 million children in India.

취학전 놀이교실을 운영하고 있습니다.

It's the largest NGO in education in the world.

교육계에서는 최대의 NGO단체이라고 할 수 있습니다.

And it also supports working-class kids going into Indian schools.

그뿐아니라 노동자 계급 자녀의 진학을 지원하기도 합니다.

He's a complete revolutionary.

그는 정말 완벽하게 혁신적인 인물입니다.

He's actually a trade union organizer by background,

사실 그는 노동조합을 조직한 경력도 갖고 있는데요,

and that's how he learned the skills

그것이 자신의 프라담 단체를 설립하는

to build his organization.

방법을 배운 계기가 되었습니다.

When they got to a certain stage,

프라담의 활동이 일정 단계에 도달하여

Pratham got big enough to attract

충분히 큰 규모로 성장하자

some pro bono support from McKinsey.

맥킨지(McKinsey)사로부터 무상 지원을 얻게 되었습니다.

McKinsey came along and looked at his model and said,

"You know what you should do with this, Madhav?

You should turn it into McDonald's.

And what you do when you go to any new site

is you kind of roll out a franchise.

프랜차이즈를 개시하듯이 하는 거에요.

And it's the same wherever you go.

어딜가도 마찬가지죠.

It's reliable and people know exactly where they are.

이게 가장 믿을만하고, 사람들에게 존재를 확실히 인식시키는 방법이죠.

And there will be no mistakes."

그래야 실패도 없어요"

And Madhav said,

"Why do we have to do it that way?

Why can't we do it more like the Chinese restaurants?"

There are Chinese restaurants everywhere,

but there is no Chinese restaurant chain.

중국음식점 체인망은 없죠.

Yet, everyone knows what is a Chinese restaurant.

그래도 사람들은 어떤게 중국음식점인지는 알아요.

They know what to expect, even though it'll be subtly different

색깔이나 이름이 미묘하게 다르다 하더라도

and the colors will be different and the name will be different.

사람들은 바로 알아차립니다.

You know a Chinese restaurant when you see it.

여러분도 중국음식점을 보면 구별하시잖아요.

These people work with the Chinese restaurant model --

프라담은 중국음식점식 모델을 취하고 있습니다.

same principles, different applications and different settings --

방법이나 환경이 다르더라도, 원칙은 같은 것이죠.

not the McDonald's model.

맥도널드식 모델과는 다릅니다.

The McDonald's model scales.

맥도널드식 모델이 덩치를 키우는 것이라면,

The Chinese restaurant model spreads.

중국음식점식 모델은 넓게 퍼져나가는 것입니다.

So mass education

대중계몽 운동은

started with social entrepreneurship

19세기에 사회사업가에 의해

in the 19th century.

시작되었습니다.

And that's desperately what we need again

그리고 이제, 그것이 다시 범세계적으로

on a global scale.

간절히 요구되고 있습니다.

And what can we learn from all of that?

Well, we can learn a lot

because our education systems

are failing desperately in many ways.

They fail to reach the people

they most need to serve.

They often hit their target but miss the point.

Improvement is increasingly

difficult to organize;

our faith in these systems, incredibly fraught.

And this is just a very simple way of

어떤 종류의 혁신과

understanding what kind of innovation,

어떤 새로운 계획이 필요한지 이해할 수 있는

what kind of different design we need.

쉬운 방법이 있습니다.

There are two basic types of innovation.

혁신에는 기본적으로 두가지 유형이 있죠.

There's sustaining innovation,

현 상태를 유지하는 혁신,

which will sustain an existing institution or an organization,

즉 현재의 기관과 조직을 유지하는 혁신이죠

and disruptive innovation

반면에 현 상태를 무너뜨리고

that will break it apart, create some different way of doing it.

다른 방법을 찾는 붕괴형 혁신이 있습니다.

There are formal settings --

혁신이 일어날 수 있는 곳은

schools, colleges, hospitals --

학교, 대학, 병원 같은

in which innovation can take place,

공적 환경과,

and informal settings -- communities,

공동체, 가정, 사회관계와 같은

families, social networks.

사적 환경이 있습니다.

Almost all our effort goes in this box,

공적환경에서 혁신하고자 하는 노력의 대부분은

sustaining innovation in formal settings,

현상유지형 혁신의 테두리안에 있습니다.

getting a better version

19세에 만들어진

of the essentially Bismarckian school system

비스마르크식의 강경한 학교시스템의

that developed in the 19th century.

더 나은 형태를 찾으려고 하죠.

And as I said, the trouble with this is that,

in the developing world

개발도상국에서는

there just aren't teachers to make this model work.

이런 교육모델을 실현할 선생님이 없습니다.

You'd need millions and millions of teachers

중국, 인도, 나이지리아 같은 곳에서는

in China, India, Nigeria

수백만의 선생님이 필요합니다.

and the rest of developing world to meet need.

나머지 개발도상국도 마찬가지죠.

And in our system, we know

그리고 우리 교육시스템에서는

that simply doing more of this won't eat into

단순히 현재 상태를 유지해서는

deep educational inequalities,

도심지나 공업지역에서의

especially in inner cities

교육격차를 해소할 수 없음을

and former industrial areas.

So that's why we need three more kinds of innovation.

따라서, 세가지의 다른 혁신이 필요합니다.

We need more reinvention.

And all around the world now you see

more and more schools reinventing themselves.

They're recognizably schools, but they look different.

There are Big Picture schools

미국과 호주에는

in the U.S. and Australia.

There are Kunskapsskolan schools

스웨덴에는 쿤스캅 스콜란(Kunscap Skolan) 학교가

in Sweden.

있는데요.

Of 14 of them,

그들 전체 14개 학교중에

only two of them are in schools.

단 두개만이 학교 건물안에 있습니다.

Most of them are in other buildings not designed as schools.

대부분은 학교목적으로 설계되지 않은 다른 건물에 있죠.

There is an amazing school in Northen Queensland

북퀸스랜드에도 또 하나의 놀라운 학교가 있는데요

called Jaringan.

자링건(Jaringan)이 그것입니다.

And they all have the same kind of features:

이들 학교들은 몇가지 공통점을 갖고 있습니다.

highly collaborative, very personalized,

공동작업의 요소가 많고, 매우 개별적이며,

often pervasive technology,

보급하기 쉬운 교육수단을 갖는다는 공통점입니다.

learning that starts from questions

지식이나 교과과정에 기반을 두지 않고

and problems and projects,

질문이나 문제, 과제를 제시하는 데에

not from knowledge and curriculum.

학습의 출발점을 두고 있습니다.

So we certainly need more of that.

바로 이런 형태를 더욱 추구해야 합니다.

But because so many of the issues in education

하지만, 교육상의 많은 문제는

aren't just in school,

학교에서만 일어나는 것이 아닙니다.

they're in family and community,

가정이나 공동체에서도 생겨나죠.

what you also need, definitely,

is more on the right hand side.

더 많은 변화가 필요합니다.

You need efforts to supplement schools.

학교의 부족한 부분을 채워주는 노력이 필요하죠.

The most famous of these is Reggio Emilia in Italy,

the family-based learning system

to support and encourage people in schools.

The most exciting is the Harlem Children's Zone,

which over 10 years, led by Geoffrey Canada,

has, through a mixture of schooling

attempted to transform not just education in schools,

but the entire culture and aspiration

of about 10,000 families in Harlem.

We need more of that

completely new and radical thinking.

You can go to places an hour away, less,

just down the road, which need that,

which need radicalism of a kind that we haven't imagined.

And finally, you need transformational innovation

in completely new and different ways.

So we are on the verge, 2015,

of an amazing achievement,

the schoolification of the world.

Every child up to the age of 15 who wants a place in school

2015년에는 학교에 가고 싶어하는 15세 미만의 모든 어린이들은

will be able to have one in 2015.

원하는 학교에 통학할 수 있게 될 것입니다.

It's an amazing thing.

정말 놀라운 일이죠.

But it is,

unlike cars, which have developed

so rapidly and orderly,

발전되어 온 것과는 다릅니다.

actually the school system is recognizably

사실상 학교시스템은

an inheritance from the 19th century,

19세기 독일식 학교체제의

from a Bismarkian model of German schooling

비스마르크적 모델을 물려 받아,

that got taken up by English reformers,

영국의 개혁가들이나

and often by

혹은

religious missionaries,

선교사들에 의해 도입되었으며,

taken up in the United States

미국에서는 사회결속을 강화하기 위해

as a force of social cohesion,

채택된 것이,

and then in Japan and South Korea as they developed.

그 후에 일본이나 한국의 성장기에 도입되었습니다.

It's recognizably 19th century in its roots.

따라서 현재 교육시스템은 19세기의 교육제도에 뿌리를 두고 있죠.

And of course it's a huge achievement.

물론 이것도 놀라운 성과입니다.

And of course it will bring great things.

앞으로도 큰 성과를 거두게 되겠죠.

It will bring skills and learning and reading.

기량, 학습, 읽기 등의 면에서는 성과를 거둘지도 모릅니다.

But it will also lay waste to imagination.

하지만 이와 동시에 아이들의 상상력은 물론이고,

It will lay waste to appetite. It will lay waste to social confidence.

학습욕구와 사회적 신뢰감 마저 황폐화 시키게 될 지도 모릅니다.

It will stratify society

사회가 자유화되는 만큼

as much as it liberates it.

사회를 계층화시킵니다.

And we are bequeathing to the developing world

우리는 개발도상국들에게 우리의 현재 교육시스템을

school systems that they will now spend

물려 주려 하고 있고, 그들은 이 시스템을 고치기 위해

a century trying to reform.

또다시 100년의 시간을 허비하게 될 것입니다.

That is why we need really radical thinking,

근본적으로 변화된 사고방식이 필요한 이유가 바로 여기에 있습니다.

and why radical thinking is now

특히 교육에 있어서는 그 어느 때보다

more possible and more needed than ever in how we learn.

사고방식을 변화시킬 필요가 있습니다.
