but -- you know the nightmare you can have, like you are an impostor,

you arrive at the opera, and they push you, "You must sing!"

So, so, because I have nothing to show, nothing to say,

we shall try to speak about something else.

なにか他の事でも話してみましょう

We can start, if you want, by understanding --

よろしければ手始めに…

it's just to start, it's not interesting, but -- how I work.

面白くもなんともないんですが…僕の仕事の進め方でもお話しましょう

When somebody comes to me and ask for what I am known,

あなたは何で知られた人か と聞かれたら―

I mean, yes, lemon squeezer, toilet brush, toothpick, beautiful toilet seats,

レモン絞り器 便器用ブラシ 爪楊枝 美しい便座に

and why not -- a toothbrush?

それに 歯ブラシですかね

I don't try to design the toothbrush.

僕は歯ブラシをデザインしようとはしません

I don't try to say, "Oh, that will be a beautiful object," or something like that.

“おぉ きっとキレイなモノになる”なんてつもりもないです

That doesn't interest me.

そんな事に 興味ありませんから

Because there is different types of design.

デザインにも 色々な種類があります

The one, we can call it the cynical design,

一つは 僕らが“ひねくれデザイン”と呼ぶもので―

that means the design invented by Raymond Loewy in the '50s,

50年代に レイモンド=ローウィが提唱したものがあります

who said, what is ugly is a bad sale, la laideur se vend mal, which is terrible.

彼は“醜いと売れない (la laideur se vend mal)”と言いました　ひどいもんです

It means the design must be just the weapon for marketing,

デザインは マーケティングの武器に徹するべき

for producer to make product more sexy, like that,

商品をもっとセクシーにして 売り上げを伸ばすためのもの

they sell more: it's shit, it's obsolete, it's ridiculous.

というわけです　最低で 時代遅れで バカバカしい

I call that the cynical design.

なので僕は “ひねくれデザイン”と呼びます

After, there is the narcissistic design:

その後に出てきたのが“自己陶酔デザイン”

it's a fantastic designer who designs only for other fantastic designers. (Laughter)

偉大なデザイナーによる 他の偉大なデザイナーのためのデザインです

After, there is people like me, who try to deserve to exist,

そのまた後で 僕のような人達が出てきた　存在価値を見出そうと―

and who are so ashamed to make this useless job, who try to do it in another way,

役に立たない仕事を恥じつつも 別のやり方を模索して―

and they try, I try, to not make the object for the object but for the result,

がんばるわけです　モノのためのモノ作りじゃなく 結果のために

for the profit for the human being, the person who will use it.

人類の利益のため それを使う人のためにね

If we take the toothbrush -- I don't think about the toothbrush.

歯ブラシを手にしても 歯ブラシの事なんて考えませんよね

I think, "What will be the effect of the brush in the mouth?"

僕なら“どれだけよく磨けるだろう？”と考えます

And to understand what will be the effect of the toothbrush in the mouth,

口の中での歯ブラシの働きを理解するには

I must imagine: Who owns this mouth?

必ずこう思い浮かべます　“この口は 誰の口だろう？

What is the life of the owner of this mouth? In what society [does] this guy live?

その人の人生はどんなだろう？　どんな社会に生きてるんだろう？

What civilization creates this society?

どんな文明が その社会を作ったんだろう？

What animal species creates this civilization?

どんな動物種が その文明を作ったんだろう？”

When I arrive -- and I take one minute, I am not so intelligent --

そこまでいくと…頭良くないんで 1分くらいかかるんですが…

when I arrive at the level of animal species, that becomes real interesting.

動物種レベルまでいくと がぜん面白くなるんですよ

Me, I have strictly no power to change anything.

僕なんかが 何かを変える力なんて 皆無ですよ

But when I come back, I can understand why I shall not do it,

立ち戻れば なんで変えない方がいいかわかります

because today to not do it, it's more positive than do it, or how I shall do it.

今日 変えない方が 変えるよりいいんです

But to come back, where I am at the animal species, there is things to see.

動物種としての 自分の位置付けに考えを及ぼすと―

There is things to see, there is the big challenge.

見るべきものに気付きます　大きな挑戦もあります

The big challenge in front of us.

僕らの目の前の挑戦です

Because there is not a human production

なぜなら 人類の生み出すもので

which exists outside of what I call "the big image."

僕の言う“全体像”の外側に存在するものなんて ないからです

The big image is our story, our poetry, our romanticism.

“全体像”とは 僕らの物語 詩や ロマンです

Our poetry is our mutation, our life.

僕らの詩とは 僕らの変異や生命です

We must remember, and we can see that in any book of my son of 10 years old,

思い出してください 10歳になる息子の本にもあるように

that life appears four billion years ago, around -- four billion point two?

生命はおよそ40億年前に誕生しました　え？42？

Voice offstage: Four point five.

（観客席）45！

Yes, point five, OK, OK, OK! (Laughter) I'm a designer,

45ですね　勘弁して下さいね　僕は一介のデザイナーですから

that's all, of Christmas gifts.

クリスマスプレゼント専門のね

And before, there was this soup, called "soupe primordiale,"

もともと“原始のスープ”といわれるものがありました

this first soup -- bloop bloop bloop --

この最初のスープは ボコボコボコと

sort of dirty mud, no life, nothing.

なんていうか汚い泥で 生命も何もありません

So then -- pshoo-shoo -- lightning -- pshoo -- arrive --

するとビカビカ！…雷が落ちて…ビカッ！…さあ来た…

pshoo-shoo -- makes life -- bloop bloop -- and that dies.

ビカッ！…命ができて…ボコボコ！…死にました

Some million years after -- pshoo-shoo, bloop-bloop -- ah, wake up!

数百万年後…ビカビカ！ボコボコ！…おーい起きろぉ！

At the end, finally, that succeeds, and life appears.

ついにうまくいって 生命の誕生です

We was so, so stupid. The most stupid bacteria.

僕らは とても馬鹿な 一番馬鹿な 微生物でした

Even, I think, we copy our way to reproduce, you know what I mean,

僕ら生殖法さえ真似てますよね　言いたいことわかります？

and something of -- oh no, forget it.

それとか…おっと 何でもないです

After, we become a fish; after, we become a frog;

その後 僕らは魚になった　そんでカエルになり

after, we become a monkey; after, we become what we are today: a super-monkey,

サルになり 今日の僕ら スーパーモンキーの出現というわけです

and the fun is, the super-monkey we are today, is at half of the story.

面白いことに 僕らスーパーモンキーは まだ物語の中盤です

Can you imagine? From that stupid bacteria to us,

想像できます？　あんなに馬鹿な微生物だった僕らが

with a microphone, with a computer, with an iPod: four billion years.

携帯 パソコンに iPod ですよ　40億年の間に

And we know, and especially Carolyn knows, that when the sun will implode,

キャロリンをはじめ皆さんご存知の通り 太陽はいずれ内部破裂します

the earth will burn, explode, I don't know what,

地球は燃えちゃってとか 爆発しちゃってとか よく知りませんけど…

and this is scheduled for four, four billion years?

それが 40億年後の予定でしたっけ？

Yes, she said, something like that. OK, that means we are at half of the story.

そんなとこです　つまり 僕らはまだ物語の中ほどなんですよ

Fantastic! It's a beauty!

こりゃすごい！美しいじゃありませんか！

Can you imagine? It's very symbolic.

想像できます？　とても象徴的です

Because the bacteria we was had no idea of what we are today.

だって40億年前の微生物は 今日の僕らの姿を 知る由もなかった

And today, we have no idea of what we shall be in four billion years.

そして今日の僕らには 40億年後の僕らを 知る由もありません

And this territory is fantastic.

この辺りが 素晴しいんですよ

That is our poetry. That is our beautiful story.

これが僕らの詩なんです　美しい物語です

It's our romanticism. Mu-ta-tion. We are mutants.

僕らのロマンです　突 然 変 異　僕らは突然変異種です

And if we don't deeply understand, if we don't integrate that we are mutants,

ここをしっかり押さえて 物語に組み込まない限り

we completely miss the story.

全くわけがわからなくなります

Because every generation thinks we are the final one.

だって みんな自分達が最後の世代だと思ってるでしょ

We have a way to look at Earth like that, you know,

僕らの地球の見方は一つ　ほら わかるでしょ

"I am the man. The final man.

“俺こそが人類　人類の完成形

You know, we mutate during four billion years before, but now, because it's me, we stop. Fin. (Laughter)

40億年間 突然変異を繰り返し 今この俺が出てきたから進化終了　終演

For the end, for the eternity, it is one with a red jacket."

最後の最後 永久の最後が 赤いジャケットの この俺”

Something like that. I am not sure of that. (Laughter)

って感じです　さぁどうだか

Because that is our intelligence of mutation and things like that.

まだこんなことを言っているくらいですから

There is so many things to do; it's so fresh.

やることは山積みです　とても新鮮です

And here is something: nobody is obliged to be a genius,

ここで一つ　天才であることは 誰の義務でもありませんが

but everybody is obliged to participate.

参加する事は みんなの義務です

And to participate, for a mutant, there is a minimum of exercise, a minimum of sport.

突然変異の皆さん ご参加の際には 最低限の訓練があります

We can say that.

スポーツとも言えます

The first, if you want -- there is so many --

まず始めにですね―

but one which is very easy to do, is the duty of vision.

とても簡単なやつ　視覚の訓練があります

I can explain you. I shall try.

説明しますよ　やってみます

If you walk like that, it's OK, it's OK, you can walk,

こんな風に歩くと まぁまぁです　歩けます

but perhaps, because you walk with the eyes like that, you will not see, oh, there is a hole.

でも 目を伏せているので視界が悪い　おっと 穴がある

And you will fall, and you will die. Dangerous.

落ちちゃいます　死んじゃいます　いたって危険

That's why, perhaps, you will try to have this angle of vision.

だから多分 これ位の視野の角度を試すでしょう

OK, I can see, if I found something, up, up, and they continue, up up up.

よし 見えます　何か見つけたら おっとっと そのまま おっとっと

I raise the angle of vision, but it's still very -- selfish, selfish, egoiste -- yes, selfish.

目線を上げましたが まだとっても…自分勝手で 自分本位で…自己中です

You, you survive. It's OK.

でも生き残れはします　まぁ大丈夫

If you raise the level of your eyes a little more you go,

そして目線を もう少しだけ上げると

"I see you, oh my God you are here, how are you, I can help you,

“おや ここにいましたか ご機嫌いかが？　お助けしましょう

I can design for you a new toothbrush, new toilet brush," something like that.

新しい歯ブラシをデザインしますよ　新しい便器用タワシはいかが？”

I live in society; I live in community.

社会の中で暮らし コミュニティと共に生きていると言えます

It's OK. You start to be in the territory of intelligence, we can say.

いいですよ　知性の領域に足を踏み入れました

From this level, the more you can raise this angle of view,

この地点から 目線を上げれば上げるほど

the more you will be important for the society.

あなたは 社会にとって より重要になります

The more you will rise, the more you will be important for the civilization.

上げれば上げるほど 文明にとって より重要になります

The more you will rise, to see far and high, like that,

上げれば上げるほど 遠く 高くが見えるあなたは

the more you will be important for the story of our mutation.

突然変異の物語にとって より重要になります

That means intelligent people are in this angle. That is intelligence.

つまり 知的な人々は ここにいるのです　ここが知的領域です

From this to here, that, it's genius.

ここからここの角度は 天才です

Ptolemy, Eratosthenes, Einstein, things like that.

プトレマイオス エラトステネス アインシュタインとかです

Nobody's obliged to be a genius.

天才である義務なんて 誰にもありません

It's better, but nobody.

結構ですが 義務ではありません

Take care, in this training, to be a good mutant.

しっかり訓練して 良い突然変異になってください

There is some danger, there is some trap. One trap: the vertical.

危険や罠はあります　一つは 垂直です

Because at the vertical of us, if you look like that,

垂直になって こんな風に見上げると

"Ah! my God, there is God. Ah! God!"

“おぉ神よ！神がおられる！あぁ神よ！”

God is a trap. God is the answer when we don't know the answer.

神は罠です　神を持ち出すのは 僕らが答えを知らないときです

That means, when your brain is not enough big, when you don't understand,

つまり 脳みその大きさが不十分で よく理解できないとき

you go, "Ah, it's God, it's God." That's ridiculous.

“あぁ神だ！神の成せる業だ！”とやっちゃう　これは馬鹿げてます

That's why -- jump, like that? No, don't jump.

だから跳ねます　こんな風に　いや跳ねないでよ

Come back. Because, after, there is another trap.

戻ってきて　だってもう一つ罠がありますから

If you look like that, you look to the past,

こんな風にのけぞると 今度は過去を見てしまいます

or you look inside if you are very flexible, inside yourself.

体が柔軟だと 自分の内側が見えてしまいます

It's called schizophrenia, and you are dead also.

そしたら 総合失調症になって これまた死んでしまいます

That's why every morning, now, because you are a good mutant,

だから毎朝 良い突然変異種なんだからこそ

you will raise your angle of view.

目線を上げるんです

Out, more of the horizontal. You are an intelligence.

外へより水平に 知的生命体として

Never forget -- like that, like that.

決して忘れないで下さい　こんな感じ　こんな感じ

It's very, very, very important.

これ とっても とっても とっても 大切です

What, what else we can say about that? Why do that?

他に何があったかな　なぜこの訓練をするのか

It's because we -- if we look from far, we see our line of evolution.

遠くから見ると 僕らの進化の道のりは 一筋の線で―

This line of evolution is clearly positive.

その線は 明らかに前進しています

From far, this line looks very smooth, like that.

遠くから見ると そう とても滑らかです

But if you take a lens, like that, this line is ack, ack, ack, ack, ack. Like that.

でもレンズでのぞくと まるでガタガタのデコボコ

It's made of light and shadow.

それに光と影からできています

We can say light is civilization, shadow is barbaria.

光は文明を 影は野蛮を表しています

And it's very important to know where we are.

僕らがどこにいるのか知っておくことは とても重要です

Because some cycle, there is a spot in the cycle,

なぜなら それによって

and you have not the same duty in the different parts of the cycle.

自分の役目が変わってくるからです

That means, we can imagine -- I don't say it was fantastic,

考えてみてください 素晴しかったとは言いませんが

but in the '80s, there was not too much war, like that, it was --

80年代はあまり戦争がなかった　ほんの短い間

we can imagine that the civilization can become civilized.

すると文明が開化していきますよね

In this case, people like me are acceptable.

そんな状況なら 僕みたいな人々は受け入れられます

We can say, "It's luxurious time."

“贅沢の時代”と言ってもいい

We have time to think, we have time to I don't know what,

考える時間があって…他には何だろう―

speak about art and things like that.

芸術とかを語る時間があるんです

It's OK. We are in the light.

いいんですよ　僕らは明るい地点にいますから

But sometimes, like today, we fall, we fall so fast, so fast to shadow, we fall so fast to barbaria.

でも今日のように たちまち暗闇へ落ち 野蛮になることもあります

With many, many, many, many face of barbaria.

野蛮といっても実に色々あります

Because it's not, the barbaria we have today, it's perhaps not the barbaria we think.

僕らには馴染みのない野蛮も出てくるでしょう

There is different type of barbaria.

野蛮にも色んな種類がありますから

That's why we must adapt.

だから適応しなくちゃいけない

That means, when barbaria is back, forget the beautiful chairs, forget the beautiful hotel,

野蛮な時代が来たなら 美しい椅子やホテルは忘れて

forget design, even -- I'm sorry to say -- forget art.

デザインも...それに失礼ですが 芸術だって忘れてください

Forget all that. There is priority; there is urgency.

キレイさっぱりと　もっと大事で緊急なことがありますから

You must go back to politics, you must go back to radicalization,

政治へ 急進化へ回帰せざるを得ません

I'm sorry if that's not very English.

今の言い方 変だったらごめんなさい

You must go back to fight, to battle.

戦いへ戻り 立ち向かう必要があります

That's why today I'm so ashamed to make this job.

だから今日はこの仕事が恥ずかしいんです

That's why I am here, to try to do it the best possible.

だからこそ僕はココで 最善を尽くします

But I know that even I do it the best possible

でも最善を尽くしたところで

-- that's why I'm the best -- it's nothing.

（だから僕って最高！）　何にもなりません

Because it's not the right time.

だって時期が違いますから

That's why I say that. I say that, because, I repeat, nothing exist if it's not in the good rhythym,

良いモノだって 光の地点じゃないと輝かない

the rhythym of our beautiful dream, of this civilization.

美しい夢や文明の時期じゃなきゃ 意味ないんです

And because we must all work to finish this story.

それに僕らは 物語の完結に向けて 頑張らないといけません

Because the scenario of this civilization

この文明のシナリオは

-- about love, progress, and things like that -- it's OK,

愛や進歩などについてです　それはそれでいいんです

but there is so many different, other scenarios of other civilizations.

違う文明の 違うシナリオもあり得るでしょう

This scenario, of this civilization, was about becoming powerful, intelligent,

僕らの文明のシナリオは 力を得て 知能を高める事です

like this idea we have invented, this concept of God.

例えば僕らの生み出した 神という概念のように

We are God now. We are. It's almost done.

今は僕らが神です　もう物語の完結は間近です

We have just to finish the story.

あとは仕上げるだけです

That is very, very important.

とてもとても重要なところです

And when you don't understand really what's happened,

何が実際に起きているのかわかってないと

you cannot go and fight and work and build and things like that.

そこに行き 戦ったり 働いたり 創ったりできません

You go to the future back, back, back, back, like that.

こんなふうに 後ろ向きに未来へ進むと おっと危ない

And you can fall, and it's very dangerous.

落ちちゃいます　すごく危ない

No, you must really understand that.

だから絶対にわかってなきゃだめです

Because we have almost finished, I'll repeat this story.

繰り返しますが 物語の完結は間近です

And the beauty of this, in perhaps 50 years, 60 years, we can finish completely this civilization,

素晴しい点は 50～60年後 この文明を完結し

and offer to our children the possibility to invent a new story,

子供たちに 新たな物語 詩 ロマンを

a new poetry, a new romanticism.

創造する可能性を 差し出せることです

With billions of people who have been born, worked, lived and died before us,

僕ら以前に 何十億もの人々が 生まれ 働き 生きて 死んだ

these people who have worked so much,

彼らの努力のお陰で 今 僕らは

we have now bring beautiful things, beautiful gifts, we know so many things.

美しいもの 贈り物 知識を 山ほど持っています

We can say to our children, OK, done, that was our story. That passed.

子供たちへ言えます　僕らの物語は出来上がり　おしまい

Now you have a duty: invent a new story. Invent a new poetry.

さぁ 今度はあなたの番　新しい物語 詩を紡ぎなさい

The only rule is, we have not to have any idea about the next story.

ルールはただ一つ　次の物語はまだまっさら

We give you white pages. Invent.

白紙をあげましょう 創造してください

We give you the best tools, the best tools, and now, do it.

最高の 最高の道具をあげますから さあ 始めてください

That's why I continue to work, even if it's for toilet brush.

だから僕は働き続けます　たとえそれが便器用タワシのためだとしても
