I'm a toy developer.

With a dream of creating new toys that have never been seen before,

見たこともない新しいおもちゃを 作りたいという夢を持って

I began working at a toy company nine years ago.

９年前におもちゃ会社に入りました

入社したころは 新しいアイデアを

When I first started working there,

I proposed many new ideas to my boss every day.

毎日 たくさん考えて 上司に提案していました

However, my boss always asked

しかし いつもこう言われました

if I had the data to prove it would sell,

これが売れるというデータがあるのか

and asked me to think of product development after analyzing market data.

市場データを分析して 商品を考えろ

Data, data, data.

データ、データ、データ

So I analyzed the market data before thinking of a product.

そこで私は 市場データを分析して 商品を考えました

However, I was unable to think of anything new at that moment.

そのとたん 新しいことを何も 思いつかなくなったんです

(Laughter)

My ideas were unoriginal.

出てくるのは何か似ているものばっかり だんだんとアイデアが出なくなり

I wasn't getting any new ideas and I grew tired of thinking.

考えることもいやになって 苦しくて

It was so hard that I became this skinny.

最終的に こんなに 痩せてしまいました

(Laughter)

It's true. (Applause)

You've all probably had similar experiences and felt this way too.

皆さんも 似たような気持ち 経験があるんじゃないでしょうか

Your boss was being difficult. The data was difficult.

上司が苦しい データが苦しい 考えるのが嫌になってしまった

You become sick of thinking.

Now, I throw out the data.

今 私は データを捨てました

It's my dream to create new toys.

新しいおもちゃを作るのが夢なんです

And now, instead of data,

そして今 代わりに

I'm using a game called Shiritori to come up with new ideas.

しりとりというゲームを使って アイデアを考えています

I would like to introduce this method today.

今日は この発想法を ご紹介したいと思います

What is Shiritori?

しりとり とは

Take apple, elephant and trumpet, for example.

りんご ゴリラ ラッパ というように

It's a game where you take turns saying words

最後の文字を頭につけた言葉を 順に言っていくゲームです

that start with the last letter of the previous word.

It's the same in Japanese and English.

日本語も英語も だいたい一緒ですね

You can play Shiritori as you like:

このしりとりを自由にやっていきます

"neko, kora, raibu, burashi," etc, etc. [Cat, cola, concert, brush]

ねこ コーラ ライブ ブラシ などなど

Many random words will come out.

ランダムな言葉がたくさん出てきます

その言葉を自分が考えたいものに

You force those words to connect to what you want to think of and form ideas.

むりやり結びつけて アイデアを出していくんです

In my case, for example, since I want to think of toys,

たとえば私の場合 考えたいものはおもちゃなので

what could a toy cat be?

「猫のおもちゃ」って 何だろう？

A cat that lands after doing a somersault from a high place?

高いとこから一回転して 着地する猫のおもちゃ

「コーラのおもちゃ」って 何だろう？

How about a toy with cola?

A toy gun where you shoot cola and get someone soaking wet?

コーラを銃で撃って 相手をベタベタにするおもちゃ

（笑）

(Laughter)

くだらないアイデアでいいんです どんどん出していきます

Ridiculous ideas are okay. The key is to keep them flowing.

そうすると アイデアを出せば出すほど

The more ideas you produce, you're sure to come up with some good ones, too.

いいアイデアも必ず出てきます

A brush, for example. Can we make a toothbrush into a toy?

たとえば ブラシ

歯ブラシをおもちゃに出来ないか

We could combine a toothbrush with a guitar and --

たとえば 歯ブラシとギターを合体させて

(Music noises) --

ジャジャジャ ジャジャ

you've got a toy you can play with while brushing your teeth.

磨きながら演奏が出来るおもちゃ

(Laughter) (Applause)

Kids who don't like to brush their teeth might begin to like it.

歯磨きがいやな子供が 歯磨き好きにならないかな

Can we make a hat into a toy?

帽子をおもちゃに出来ないかな

How about something like a roulette game, where you try the hat on one by one,

ロシアン・ルーレットみたいに 一人ずつ こう帽子を被っていって

and then, when someone puts it on, a scary alien breaks through the top

誰かが被った瞬間に 頭を突き破って

凶暴なエイリアンが 「ギャアァッ」と出てくる

screaming, "Ahh!"

I wonder if there would be a demand for this at parties?

これ ホームパーティーとかで 需要がないかと

Ideas that didn't come out while you stare at the data will start to come out.

データとにらめっこしていては

絶対出てこないアイデアが どんどん出てきます

Actually, this bubble wrap, which is used to pack fragile objects,

実際 この梱包材の

プチプチ — 壊れやすいものを包む —

combined with a toy, made Mugen Pop Pop,

これをおもちゃと結びつけて 無限プチプチという

a toy where you can pop the bubbles as much as you like.

この好きなだけ指で プチプチ出来るおもちゃ

It was a big hit when it reached stores.

生まれて これ大ヒットしました

これ データと まったく関係ありません

Data had nothing to do with its success.

Although it's only popping bubbles,

これプチプチするだけなんですけど

it's a great way to kill time,

すごくいい暇つぶしになるんで

so please pass this around

今日一日 会場の皆さんで まわして遊んでください

amongst yourselves today and play with it.

(Applause)

Anyway, you continue to come up with useless ideas.

とにかく くだらないアイデアを どんどん出すんです

Think up many trivial ideas, everyone.

皆さん くだらないアイデアを たくさん出します

If you base your ideas on data analysis and know what you're aiming for,

分析に基づいて 狙うところが分かってしまうと

you'll end up trying too hard,

そこを狙いすぎるあまり 新しいことが出なくなります

and you can't produce new ideas.

そうではなくて 狙うところが分かっていても

Even if you know what your aim is,

think of ideas as freely as if you were throwing darts with your eyes closed.

目をつぶってダーツを投げるように

自由にアイデアを考えるんです

If you do this, you surely will hit somewhere near the center.

そうすると 必ず 真ん中に近いところに当たります

At least one will.

一個ぐらいは

That's the one you should choose.

それを選ぶんです

If you do so, that idea will be in demand

そうすると そのアイデアは

ニーズがあり かつ 新しいアイデアになる

and, moreover, it will be brand new.

そういう やり方です

That is how I think of new ideas.

It doesn't have to be Shiritori; there are many different methods.

これはしりとりじゃなくても いろんな方法が出来ます

You just have to choose words at random.

ランダムな言葉を集めればいいです

You can flip through a dictionary and choose words at random.

辞書をぱらぱらとめくって 言葉をランダムに集めたり

For example, you could look up two random letters and gather the results

たとえば適当な２文字を検索して 出てきた結果を拾ったり

or go to the store and connect product names

お店に行って 商品の名前を

with what you want to think of.

どんどん考えたいものに 結びつけていくというやり方もありです

The point is to gather random words,

ポイントは 自分が考えたい ジャンルの情報を集めるんではなく

not information from the category you're thinking for.

ランダムな言葉を集めることです

If you do this, the ingredients for the association of ideas are collected

そうすることで頭の中に

連想の材料が いろいろな連想の材料が集まって

and form connections that will produce many ideas.

それが結びついて アイデアがどんどん出ます

The greatest advantage to this method is the continuous flow of images.

この方法の最大の利点は イメージの連続性です

Because you're thinking of one word after another,

言葉を順番に考えていくわけなので

the image of the previous word is still with you.

前に考えていた言葉の イメージが残っているんですね

That image will automatically be related with future words.

それが勝手に後々 結びついてくるんです

Unconsciously, a concert will be connected to a brush

無意識のうちに ライブとブラシが結びつき

and a roulette game will be connected to a hat.

ルーレットと帽子が結びつく

You wouldn't even realize it.

これ 自分でも気づかないんです で 思いもよらないアイデアが出てくる

You can come up with ideas that you wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

この方法はもちろん おもちゃだけでなく

This method is, of course, not just for toys.

本や アプリ イベント

You can collect ideas for books, apps, events, and many other projects.

あらゆる企画の発想に役立ちます

I hope you all try this method.

ぜひ皆さんに試していただきたいです

データから生まれる未来もあります

There are futures that are born from data.

しかし 私は しりとりという たわいもない遊びから

However, using this silly game called Shiritori,
