With a dream of creating new toys that have never been seen before,

I began working at a toy company nine years ago.

When I first started working there,

I proposed many new ideas to my boss every day.

However, my boss always asked

if I had the data to prove it would sell,

and asked me to think of product development after analyzing market data.

그리고 시장자료를 분석한 뒤 제품개발을 하라고 했습니다.

Data, data, data.

자료, 자료, 자료...

So I analyzed the market data before thinking of a product.

그래서 상품을 개발하기 전에 시장자료를 분석했습니다.

However, I was unable to think of anything new at that moment.

그런데 그 때부터 새로운 생각이 떠오르질 않는 겁니다.

(Laughter)

My ideas were unoriginal.

생각이 독창적이지도 않았습니다.

I wasn't getting any new ideas and I grew tired of thinking.

새로운 생각이 떠오르지 않게 되고 생각하기도 귀찮아졌습니다.

It was so hard that I became this skinny.

너무 힘들어서 이렇게 빼빼 말라버렸어요.

(Laughter)

정말이에요. (박수)

It's true. (Applause)

You've all probably had similar experiences and felt this way too.

여러분도 그런 식으로 저와 비슷하게 느낀 경험을 가지고 있을 겁니다.

Your boss was being difficult. The data was difficult.

상사가 까다롭게 굴었고, 정보처리도 힘들었겠죠.

You become sick of thinking.

생각하는 것도 지겨워 집니다.

Now, I throw out the data.

그래서 저는 정보를 팽개쳐 버렸어요.

It's my dream to create new toys.

사실, 참신한 장난감을 만드는 건 제 꿈인데 말이죠.

And now, instead of data,

그래서 저는 정보를 사용하는 대신에

I'm using a game called Shiritori to come up with new ideas.

시리토리라는 게임을 이용해서 새로운 생각을 만들어 냅니다.

I would like to introduce this method today.

오늘 이 방법을 소개해 드리겠습니다.

What is Shiritori?

시리토리가 무엇일까요?

Take apple, elephant and trumpet, for example.

링고,고리가, 라파를 예로 들면, [사과, 고릴라, 트럼펫]

It's a game where you take turns saying words

이것은 끝말잇기 게임입니다.

that start with the last letter of the previous word.

단어의 마지막 글자로 시작하는 단어를 차례로 말하는 거예요.

It's the same in Japanese and English.

일본어나 영어나 같습니다.

You can play Shiritori as you like:

시리토리를 이렇게 할 수 있습니다.

"neko, kora, raibu, burashi," etc, etc. [Cat, cola, concert, brush]

"네코, 코라, 라이부, 부라시" 등이죠. [고양이, 콜라, 콘서트, 브러쉬]

Many random words will come out.

단어가 무작위로 나옵니다.

그 단어들을 원하는대로 연결하여 아이디어를 만드는 겁니다.

You force those words to connect to what you want to think of and form ideas.

In my case, for example, since I want to think of toys,

제 경우에는 장난감을 생각하다 보니 이런 생각을 합니다.

what could a toy cat be?

어떤 식의 장난감 고양이가 될까?

A cat that lands after doing a somersault from a high place?

높은 곳에서 공중제비돌며 착지하는 고양이는 어떨까?

콜라를 든 장난감은 어떨까?

How about a toy with cola?

A toy gun where you shoot cola and get someone soaking wet?

콜라를 사람들에게 쏘아 젖게 만드는 콜라 물총은 어떨까?

(Laughter)

Ridiculous ideas are okay. The key is to keep them flowing.

말도 안되는 생각도 좋아요. 핵심은 아디이어가 끊이지 않게 하는 겁니다.

The more ideas you produce, you're sure to come up with some good ones, too.

아이디어를 많이 생각해 낼수록 분명 좋은 것들이 더 나오게 돼 있어요.

A brush, for example. Can we make a toothbrush into a toy?

브러쉬를 예로 들면, 장난감 칫솔을 만들 수 있을까요?

We could combine a toothbrush with a guitar and --

칫솔과 기타를 조합하는 거죠.

(Music noises) --

(음악 소리)

you've got a toy you can play with while brushing your teeth.

양치질을 하면서 놀 수 있는 장난감을 만들 수 있어요.

(Laughter) (Applause)

Kids who don't like to brush their teeth might begin to like it.

양치질하기 싫어하는 아이들이 좋아할 겁니다.

Can we make a hat into a toy?

모자로 장난감을 만들 수 있을까요?

How about something like a roulette game, where you try the hat on one by one,

모자를 하나씩 쓰는 룰렛 게임 같은 건 어떨까요?

and then, when someone puts it on, a scary alien breaks through the top

누가 모자를 쓰면 무서운 외계인이 튀어나와서는

screaming, "Ahh!"

"야!"하고 소리지는 겁니다.

I wonder if there would be a demand for this at parties?

파티에서 수요가 있을지 궁금합니다.

Ideas that didn't come out while you stare at the data will start to come out.

정보를 가지고는 생각나지 않던 생각이 쏟아져 나오기 시작합니다.

Actually, this bubble wrap, which is used to pack fragile objects,

깨지기 쉬운 물건을 포장할 때 쓰는 발포 비닐랩이

combined with a toy, made Mugen Pop Pop,

무겐 뽁뽁이라는 장난감이 됩니다.

a toy where you can pop the bubbles as much as you like.

원하는 대로 터뜨릴 수 있는 것이지요.

It was a big hit when it reached stores.

출시되었을 때 선풍적인 인기였어요.

Data had nothing to do with its success.

자료 자체는 그 성공과 아무런 연관성이 없었죠.

Although it's only popping bubbles,

그저 뽁뽁 터뜨리는 것이지만 시간 죽이기에는 그만이죠.

it's a great way to kill time,

so please pass this around

자, 여러분들도, 오늘 이걸 가지고 서로 돌려보면서 놀아보세요.

amongst yourselves today and play with it.

Anyway, you continue to come up with useless ideas.

아무튼 쓸데 없는 생각도 계속 납니다.

Think up many trivial ideas, everyone.

모두들 자질구레한 생각도 많이 합니다.

If you base your ideas on data analysis and know what you're aiming for,

정보분석에 기초에서 목표를 달성하려면

너무 힘들게 될 것이고 참신한 생각은 하지 못합니다.

you'll end up trying too hard,

and you can't produce new ideas.

Even if you know what your aim is,

목표가 뭔지 알고 있어도

눈을 감고 다트 던지듯이 자유롭게 생각을 해야 합니다.

think of ideas as freely as if you were throwing darts with your eyes closed.

그렇게 하면 표적의 중심을 반드시 맞출 수 있게 됩니다.

If you do this, you surely will hit somewhere near the center.

At least one will.

적어도 하나는 맞출겁니다.

That's the one you should choose.

바로 그걸 선택해야지요.

If you do so, that idea will be in demand

그렇게 하면 그 생각은 수요가 생기는 데다가

and, moreover, it will be brand new.

참신하기까지 할 겁니다.

That is how I think of new ideas.

저는 그렇게 새로운 아이디어를 떠올립니다.

It doesn't have to be Shiritori; there are many different methods.

시리토리가 아니어도 다른 방법들이 많이 있습니다.

You just have to choose words at random.

무작위로 단어를 선택하면 됩니다.

You can flip through a dictionary and choose words at random.

사전을 뒤적여서 아무거나 고르시면 됩니다.

For example, you could look up two random letters and gather the results

가령 아무 두 글자나 보고 결과를 만들거나

가게에 가서 생각해 보고 싶은 제품들의 이름을 연결해 보는 겁니다.

or go to the store and connect product names

with what you want to think of.

The point is to gather random words,

핵심은 생각하는 범주의 정보를 모으는 게 아니라

not information from the category you're thinking for.

무작위적인 단어를 모아보는 겁니다.

If you do this, the ingredients for the association of ideas are collected

이렇게 하면 아이디어의 요소가 모아져서

많은 아이디어를 낼 수 있는 연결고리가 생기는 겁니다.

and form connections that will produce many ideas.

The greatest advantage to this method is the continuous flow of images.

이 방법의 최대장점은 이미지가 끊임없이 나온다는 것이죠.

Because you're thinking of one word after another,

단어를 하나씩 생각하기 때문에

the image of the previous word is still with you.

이전 단어의 이미지를 아직 기억하는 겁니다.

That image will automatically be related with future words.

그럼 그 이미지가 자동으로 다음 단어와 연관지어집니다.

Unconsciously, a concert will be connected to a brush

무의식적으로 콘서트가 브러쉬와 연결되고

and a roulette game will be connected to a hat.

룰렛게임은 모자와 연결됩니다.

You wouldn't even realize it.

여러분은 그렇게 하는 걸 알아 차리지도 못할 겁니다.

You can come up with ideas that you wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

다른 방법으로는 생각지도 못할 아이디어를 얻을 수 있습니다.

This method is, of course, not just for toys.

이 방법은 장난감에만 국한된 게 아닙니다.

You can collect ideas for books, apps, events, and many other projects.

책, 앱, 행사 등 다른 것에도 아이디어를 쓸 수 있습니다.

I hope you all try this method.

There are futures that are born from data.
