I have a broad perspective on capitalism

But let's be honest: I am not the smartest person you've ever met.

Truly, my success is the consequence

of spectacular luck,

But I am actually pretty good at a couple of things.

One, I have an unusually high tolerance for risk,

and the other is I have a good sense,

a good intuition about what will happen in the future,

So what do I see in our future today,

I see pitchforks,

as in angry mobs with pitchforks,

because while people like us plutocrats

are living beyond the dreams of avarice,

the other 99 percent of our fellow citizens

are falling farther and farther behind.

In 1980, the top one percent of Americans

Thirty years later, today, the top one percent

Some inequality is necessary

for a high-functioning capitalist democracy.

The problem is that inequality

مشکل این‌جاست که نابرابری الان به بالاترین

is at historic highs today

حد خودش در تاریخ رسیده

and it's getting worse every day.

و روز به روز بدتر می‌شه.

And if wealth, power, and income

و اگر ثروت، قدرت و درآمد

continue to concentrate

هم‌چنان در بالا

at the very tippy top,

متمرکز باشه،

our society will change

جامعه‌ی ما

from a capitalist democracy

از مردمسالاری سرمایه‌داری

to a neo-feudalist rentier society

تبدیل می‌شه به جامعه‌ی نوفئودالی

like 18th-century France.

That was France

یعنی همون فرانسه‌ی

before the revolution

and the mobs with the pitchforks.

و توده‌ی مردم و شمشیراشون.

So I have a message for my fellow plutocrats

پس پیام من به هم قطارای اشرافی

and zillionaires

و ثروتمندم

and for anyone who lives

و اونایی که توی حباب

in a gated bubble world:

خودشون رو محصور کردن

Wake up.

اینه که بیدار شید. بیدار شید.

Wake up. It cannot last.

اوضاع به این منوال نمی‌مونه.

Because if we do not do something

چون اگه در صدد حل این نابرابری اقتصادی

to fix the glaring economic inequities in our society,

چشمگیر که جامعه رو فراگرفته برنیایم،

the pitchforks will come for us,

خشم مردم دامنمونو می‌گیره،

for no free and open society can long sustain

this kind of rising economic inequality.

It has never happened. There are no examples.

حتی یک نمونه هم در تاریخ نمی‌شه پیدا کرد.

You show me a highly unequal society,

هر جامعه‌ای که چنین نابرابری

and I will show you a police state

درش وجود داره یا با شورش روبرو میشه

or an uprising.

یا یه حکومت پلیسی امنیتی برش حکم‌فرماست.

The pitchforks will come for us

اگه کاری نکنیم، شورش و

if we do not address this.

خشم مردم دامن‌مون رو می‌گیره.

It's not a matter of if, it's when.

این یه امر قطعیه.

And it will be terrible when they come

for everyone,

but particularly for people like us plutocrats.

I know I must sound like some liberal do-gooder.

I'm not. I'm not making a moral argument

that economic inequality is wrong.

What I am arguing is that rising economic inequality

is stupid and ultimately self-defeating.

Rising inequality doesn't just increase our risks

نابرابری روزافزون نه تنها ما رو

from pitchforks,

هدف خشم مردم قرار می‌ده،

but it's also terrible for business too.

بلکه برای کسب و کار هم بده.

So the model for us rich guys should be Henry Ford.

الگوی ما ثروتمندا باید هنری فورد باشه.

When Ford famously introduced the $5 day,

وقتی فورد دستمزد ۵ دلاری رو ارایه کرد

which was twice the prevailing wage at the time,

که دوبرابر بیشتر از حقوق اون روز بود،

he didn't just increase the productivity

نه تنها تولید کارخونه‌هاش

of his factories,

he converted exploited autoworkers who were poor

into a thriving middle class who could now afford

Ford intuited what we now know is true,

that an economy is best understood as an ecosystem

and characterized by the same kinds

of feedback loops you find

Raising wages increases demand,

and that virtuous cycle of increasing prosperity

is precisely what is missing

from today's economic recovery.

And this is why we need to put behind us

the trickle-down policies that so dominate

both political parties

and embrace something I call middle-out economics.

Middle-out economics rejects

the neoclassical economic idea

that economies are efficient, linear, mechanistic,

that they tend towards equilibrium and fairness,

and instead embraces the 21st-century idea

و به‌جای اون ایده‌ی قرن بیست و یکمی رو ارایه می‌ده

that economies are complex, adaptive,

that they tend away from equilibrium and toward inequality,

that they're not efficient at all

This 21st-century perspective

allows you to clearly see that capitalism

does not work by [efficiently] allocating

existing resources.

It works by [efficiently] creating new solutions

to human problems.

The genius of capitalism

نبوغ سرمایه‌داری در اینه که

is that it is an evolutionary solution-finding system.

It rewards people for solving other people's problems.

که به افراد به‌خاطر حل مشکلات دیگران پاداش می‌ده.

The difference between a poor society

تفاوت آشکار میان جوامع فقیر و

and a rich society, obviously,

و جوامع ثروتمند

is the degree to which that society

has generated solutions in the form

of products for its citizens.

The sum of the solutions

that we have in our society

really is our prosperity, and this explains

to our nation's prosperity.

This 21st-century perspective

also makes clear

that what we think of as economic growth

is best understood as

the rate at which we solve problems.

But that rate is totally dependent upon

how many problem solvers —

It requires effort and investment,

which is why all

highly prosperous capitalist democracies

are characterized by massive investments

in the middle class and the infrastructure

that they depend on.

We plutocrats need to get this

trickle-down economics thing behind us,

this idea that the better we do,

the better everyone else will do.

دیگران موفق‌ترن، پشت سر بذاریم.

It's not true. How could it be?

I earn 1,000 times the median wage,

but I do not buy 1,000 times as much stuff,

do I?

نه.

I actually bought two pairs of these pants,

what my partner Mike calls

I could have bought 2,000 pairs,

No matter how wealthy a few plutocrats get,

we can never drive a great national economy.

Only a thriving middle class can do that.

There's nothing to be done,

Henry Ford was in a different time.

Bloomberg published an article I wrote called

مقاله‎ای از من چاپ کرد تحت عنوان

"The Capitalist’s Case for a $15 Minimum Wage."

" دنیای سرمایه‎داری و حداقل دستمزد ۱۵ دلاری"

The good people at Forbes magazine,

که بچه‎های خوب نشریه ی فوربز

among my biggest admirers,

که از طرفدارای پر و پا قرص من هم هستن

called it "Nick Hanauer's near-insane proposal."

بهش گفتن "پیشنهاد جنون آمیز نیک هاناور".

And yet, just 350 days

اما تنها ۳۵۰ روز

after that article was published,

Seattle's Mayor Ed Murray signed into law

an ordinance raising the minimum wage in Seattle

to 15 dollars an hour,

more than double

what the prevailing federal $7.25 rate is.

How did this happen,

It happened because a group of us

that they are the source

We reminded them that when workers have more money,

We reminded them that when businesses

Now the orthodox reaction, of course,

is raising the minimum wage costs jobs. Right?

Your politician's always echoing

سیاستمدارا همواره این ایده‎ی

that trickle-down idea by saying things like,

"Well, if you raise the price of employment,

guess what happens? You get less of it."

استخدام کاهش پیدا می‎کنه".

Are you sure?

مطمئنید؟

Because there's some contravening evidence.

چون شاهد خلاف این ادعا فراوانه.

Since 1980, the wages of CEOs in our country

از سال ۱۹۸۰ دستمزد مدیرا در کشورمون

have gone from about 30 times the median wage

از ۳۰ برابر میانگین دستمزد

to 500 times.

رسیده به 500 برابر.

That's raising the price of employment.

مگه این نمونه‎ی بارزافزایش هزینه‎ی استخدام نیست؟

And yet, to my knowledge,

I have never seen a company

outsource its CEO's job, automate their job,

In fact, we appear to be employing

is actually the continuation

of a logical economic policy.

It is allowing our city

to kick your city's ass.

Because, you see,

Washington state already has

ایالت واشینگتن

the highest minimum wage

of any state in the nation.

We pay all workers $9.32,

ما به همه‌ی کارکنان ۹/۳۲ دلار می‌دیم

which is almost 30 percent more

than the federal minimum of 7.25,

but crucially, 427 percent more

The restaurant business in Seattle? Booming.

Why? Because the fundamental law of capitalism is,

when workers have more money,

is not the claim that if the rich get richer,

everyone is better off.

برای همه بهتره، بلکه ادعای

It is the claim made by those who oppose

اونایی که مخالف افزایش

any increase in the minimum wage

حداقل دستمردن اینه که

that if the poor get richer,

اگه بی‌پولا به نون و نوایی برسن،

that will be bad for the economy.

اقتصاد ضربه می‌خوره.

This is nonsense.

این ادعاها همه توخالین.

So can we please dispense with this rhetoric

پس خواهش می‌کنم این ادعاها رو

that says that rich guys like me

که ثروتمندایی مثل من

and my plutocrat friends

و دوستای پولدارم

made our country?

این کشور رو ساختن کنار بذاریم.

We plutocrats know,

ما ثروتمندا خوب می‌دونیم،

even if we don't like to admit it in public,

گرچه اذعانش برای خیلی از ماها دشواره،

that if we had been born somewhere else,

اگه تو هر کشور دیگه‌ای غیر ازآمریکا

not here in the United States,

we might very well be just some dude standing barefoot

by the side of a dirt road selling fruit.

It's not that they don't have good entrepreneurs in other places,

این به این معنی نیست که تو کشورای دیگه،

even very, very poor places.

It's just that that's all

اما مشتریای اون کارآفرینا چیزی بیشتر

that those entrepreneurs' customers can afford.

So here's an idea for a new kind of economics,

بنابراین، ایده‌ی من برای گونه‌ی جدیدی

a new kind of politics

از اقتصاد و سیاست،

that I call new capitalism.

سرمایه‌داری نوینه.

Let's acknowledge that capitalism

این درسته که سرمایه‌داری

beats the alternatives,

از همه‌ی الگوهای دیگه برتره،

but also that the more people we include,

اما فراموش نکنیم که این الگو زمانی

both as entrepreneurs and as customers,

به اوج شکوفایی می‌رسه که انسان‌های بیشتری،

the better it works.

چه کارآفرین چه مشتری، رو در بر بگیره.

Let's by all means shrink the size of government,

بیاید تا اونجا که می‌تونیم اندازه‌ی دولت رو کاهش بدیم،

but not by slashing the poverty programs,

اما نه با حذف برنامه‌های کمک به فقرا،

but by ensuring that workers are paid enough

بلکه با افزایش دستمزد کارگرا تا

so that they actually don't need those programs.

دیگه کسی نیازمند چنین برنامه‌هایی نباشه.

Let's invest enough in the middle class

بیاید به اندازه‌ی کافی روی قشر متوسط

to make our economy fairer and more inclusive,

سرمایه‌گذاری کنیم تا اقتصادمون عادلانه‌تر

and by fairer, more truly competitive,

و فراگیرتر بشه، که از این طریق

and by more truly competitive,

رقابت رو افزایش بدیم و در نهایت به

more able to generate the solutions

راه‌حل‌های بیشتری برای مشکلات بشر

to human problems

دست پیدا کنیم که این خود اصلی‌ترین

that are the true drivers of growth and prosperity.

نیروی محرکه‌ی رشد و رونقه.

Capitalism is the greatest social technology

سرمایه‌داری بزرگترین و بهترین

ever invented

فن‌آوری اجتماعیه که تاکنون

for creating prosperity in human societies,

برای تولید رونق و پویایی در جوامع بشری

if it is well managed,

اختراع شده، در صورتی که درست مدیریت بشه.

but capitalism, because of the fundamental

اما به‌خاطر سیستم‌های پیچیده و

multiplicative dynamics of complex systems,

عوامل متعدد دست اندرکار،

tends towards, inexorably, inequality,

این اختراع شگرف می‌تونه به راحتی

concentration and collapse.

به‌سوی نابرابری و تمرکز و درنهایت زوال بره.

The work of democracies

عملکرد سیستم‌های مردمسالار باید

is to maximize the inclusion of the many

در راستای فراگیری اکثریت باشه

in order to create prosperity,

که رونق به‌وجود بیاد،

not to enable the few to accumulate money.

نه کمک به ثروت اندوزی اقلیت کنه.

Government does create prosperity and growth,

دولت در صورتی عامل رونق می‌شه

by creating the conditions that allow

که شرایط رو به‌گونه‌ای مهیا کنه که

both entrepreneurs and their customers

هم کارآفرین و هم مشتری

to thrive.

امکان عرض‌اندام داشته باشن.

Balancing the power of capitalists like me

ایجاد موازنه بین قدرت سرمایه‌دارهایی

and workers isn't bad for capitalism.

مثل من و کارگرا نه تنها

It's essential to it.

برای سرمایه‌داری بد نیست که ضروریه.

Programs like a reasonable minimum wage,

برنامه‌هایی مانند حداقل دستمزد معقول،

affordable healthcare,

خدمات درمانی قابل دسترس،

paid sick leave,

مرخصی استعلاجی باحقوق و

and the progressive taxation necessary

مالیات تصاعدی که لازمه‌ی ایجاد

to pay for the important infrastructure

ساختارهایی است مهم برای قشر متوسط

necessary for the middle class like education, R and D,

از قبیل آموزش، پژوهش و گسترش،

these are indispensable tools

اینها ملزوماتی هستن که سرمایه‌دارایِ

shrewd capitalists should embrace

دوراندیش و عاقل باید با آغوش باز بپذیرن،

to drive growth, because no one benefits from it

تا باعث رشد و رونق شن، چرا که هیچ کس به اندازه‌ی ما

like us.

از بهبود این شرایط بهره نخواهد برد.

Many economists would have you believe

اقتصاددانایی هستند که می‌گن

that their field is an objective science.

اقتصاد، علمی عینی و بی طرفه.

I disagree, and I think that it is equally

من با این ادعا مخالفم، و بر این باورم

a tool that humans use

که می‌شه از اقتصاد به‌عنوان ابزاری

to enforce and encode

برای القای منویات و

our social and moral preferences and prejudices

تعصبات اخلاقی واجتماعی

about status and power,

درباره‌ی مقام و قدرت نیز بهره برد.

which is why plutocrats like me

و به‌همین دلیله که ثروتمندایی مثل من

have always needed to find persuasive stories

همواره نیاز به داستان‌هایی دارن که

to tell everyone else

مردم عادی رو متقاعد کنن

about why our relative positions

که قدرت و مقام‌شون

are morally righteous and good for everyone:

بحق و به سود همه است؛

like, we are indispensable, the job creators,

داستان‌هایی مثل این که وجود

and you are not;

like, tax cuts for us create growth,

but investments in you

will balloon our debt

and bankrupt our great country;

For thousands of years, these stories were called

Today, we have trickle-down economics.

امروزه ما اقتصاد رو پولدار محور کردیم.

How obviously, transparently self-serving

آیا خودخواهی از این آشکارتر

all of this is.

وجود داره؟

We plutocrats need to see

ما طبقه‌ی اشراف باید بپذیریم که

that the United States of America made us,

این آمریکا بود که ما رو ساخت

not the other way around;

نه برعکس؛

that a thriving middle class is the source

که قشر متوسط فعال و بانشاط سرچشمه‌ی رونقِ

of prosperity in capitalist economies,

اقتصادهای سرمایه‌داریه،

not a consequence of it.

نه نتیجه‌ی اون.

And we should never forget

و هرگز نباید فراموش کنیم که

that even the best of us in the worst of circumstances

حتی بهترین ما در بدترین شرایط

Fellow plutocrats, I think it may be time for us

to recommit to our country,

دوباره خودمون رو وقف کشورمون کنیم،

to commit to a new kind of capitalism

وقف گونه‌ای نوین از سرمایه‌داری که

which is both more inclusive and more effective,

فراگیرتر و کارآمدتره،

a capitalism that will ensure

سیستمی که تضمین می‌کنه

that America's economy remains

the most dynamic and prosperous in the world.

Let's secure the future for ourselves,

بیاید چنین آینده‌ای رو برای خودمون،

our children and their children.

فرزندامون و فرزندای اونا رقم بزنیم.

Or alternatively, we could do nothing,

یا اینکه می‌تونیم هیچ کاری نکنیم،

hide in our gated communities

پشت دیوارای بلند و مدارس خصوصی

and private schools,

خودمون رو پنهان کنیم،

enjoy our planes and yachts

از قایقا و هواپیماهامون

— they're fun —

لذت ببریم

and wait for the pitchforks.

و منتظر شمشیرها باشیم.
