"Can you taste words?"

"شما می‌تونین کلمات رو بچشین؟"

It was a question that caught me by surprise.

این سوالی بود که موجب حیرت من شد.

This summer, I was giving a talk at a literary festival,

این تابستان، یک سخنرانی در فستیوالی ادبی داشتم،

and afterwards, as I was signing books,

و بعد، در حال امضای کتاب‌ها بودم،

a teenage girl came with her friend,

یک دختر نوجوون با دوست‌ش اومد،

and this is what she asked me.

و این سوالی بود که ازم پرسید.

I told her that some people experience an overlap in their senses

به او گفتم بعضی آدم‌ها این هم‌پوشانی حس‌هاشون رو تجربه می‌کنن.

so that they could hear colors

طوری که می‌تونن رنگ‌ها رو بشنون،

or see sounds,

یا صداها رو ببینن،

and many writers were fascinated by this subject, myself included.

But she cut me off, a bit impatiently, and said, "Yeah, I know all of that.

It's called synesthesia. We learned it at school.

بهش می‌گن حس‌آمیزی. توی مدرسه یاد گرفتیم.

But my mom is reading your book,

and she says there's lots of food and ingredients

و می‌گه توش یه عالمه غذا و مواد خوراکی هست

and a long dinner scene in it.

و یک صحنه‌ی طولانی شام.

She gets hungry at every page.

او با خوندن هر صفحه گرسنه‌ش می‌شه.

So I was thinking,

پس من فکر کردم،

how come you don't get hungry when you write?

شما چطور وقتی می‌نویسین گرسنه‌تون نمی‌شه؟

And I thought maybe, maybe you could taste words.

و با خودم فکر کردم شاید، شاید شما می‌تونین کلمات رو بچشین.

Does it make sense?"

حرف‌هام براتون معنی دارن؟"

And, actually, it did make sense,

و، واقعا حرف‌هاش برام معنی داشتن،

because ever since my childhood,

چون از وقتی بچه بودم،

each letter in the alphabet has a different color,

هر حرفی از حروف الفبا، برای من یک رنگ بود،

and colors bring me flavors.

و رنگ‌ها برای من با طعم و مزه همراهن.

So for instance, the color purple is quite pungent, almost perfumed,

برای مثال رنگ بنفش کمابیش تند و تیزه، تقریبا معطره،

and any words that I associate with purple

و هر کلمه‌ای که من به بنفش ربط بدم

taste the same way,

همون مزه رو می‌ده،

such as "sunset" -- a very spicy word.

But I was worried that if I tell all of this to the teenager,

ولی من نگران بودم اگر همه‌ی اینا رو به یک نوجوون بگم،

it might sound either too abstract

یا ممکنه به نظرش خیلی انتزاعی بیاد

or perhaps too weird,

یا شاید خیلی عجیب غریب،

and there wasn't enough time anyhow,

و به هرحال زمان هم کافی نبود،

because people were waiting in the queue,

چون آدم‌های دیگه‌ای توی صف منتظر بودن،

so it suddenly felt like what I was trying to convey

پس ناگهان این‌طور حس کردم که چیزی که می‌خوام منتقل کنم

was more complicated and detailed

پیچیده‌تر و باجزییات‌تر از اونیه

than what the circumstances allowed me to say.

که شرایط به من اجازه‌ی بیان‌ش رو بده.

And I did what I usually do in similar situations:

و من کاری رو کردم که معمولا در شرایط مشابه انجام می‌دم:

I stammered, I shut down, and I stopped talking.

به تته‌پته افتادم، ساکت شدم، و دیگه حرف نزدم.

I stopped talking because the truth was complicated,

دیگه حرف نزدم چون حقیقت پیچیده بود،

even though I knew, deep within,

با اینکه در عمق وجودم می‌دونستم،

that one should never, ever remain silent for fear of complexity.

که هیچ‌کسی هرگز نباید به خاطر ترس از پیچیدگی ساکت بمونه.

So I want to start my talk today

بنابراین امروز می‌خوام صحبت‌م رو

with the answer that I was not able to give on that day.

با جوابی که اون‌روز قادر به بیان‌ش نبودم، شروع کنم.

Yes, I can taste words --

بله، من می‌تونم کلمات رو بچشم --

sometimes, that is, not always,

بعضی وقت‌ها، نه همیشه،

and happy words have a different flavor than sad words.

و کلمات شاد طعم متفاوتی از کلمات غمگین دارن.

I like to explore: What does the word "creativity" taste like,

دوست دارم کشف کنم: کلمه‌ی "خلاقیت" چه طعمی داره،

or "equality,"

یا "برابری"،

"love," "revolution?"

"عشق"، "انقلاب"؟

And what about "motherland?"

و "سرزمین مادری" چطور؟

These days, it's particularly this last word that troubles me.

این روزها، به ویژه این کلمه‌ی آخر ذهن من رو مشغول کرده.

It leaves a sweet taste on my tongue,

این کلمه یک طعم شیرین روی زبون‌م می‌گذاره،

like cinnamon, a bit of rose water

شبیه دارچین، یه کم گلاب

and golden apples.

و سیب‌های زرد.

But underneath, there's a sharp tang,

ولی زیرش، یه طعم تند و تیز هست،

like nettles and dandelion.

شبیه گزنه و کاسنی.

The taste of my motherland, Turkey,

طعم سرزمین مادری من، ترکیه،

is a mixture of sweet and bitter.

مخلوطی از تلخ و شیرینه.

And the reason why I'm telling you this

و دلیل اینکه این رو براتون می‌گم،

is because I think there's more and more people

اینه که فکر می‌کنم آدم‌های بیشتر و بیشتری

all around the world today

امروزه در سراسر دنیا هستن

who have similarly mixed emotions

که احساسات درهم مشابهی دارن

about the lands they come from.

در مورد سرزمین‌هایی که ازشون اومدن.

We love our native countries, yeah?

ما وطن‌هامون رو دوست داریم، درسته؟

How can we not?

چطور می‌تونیم دوست نداشته باشیم؟

We feel attached to the people, the culture, the land, the food.

ما به مردم، به فرهنگ، به خاک، به غذاها احساس تعلق داریم.

And yet at the same time,

و درست همزمان،

we feel increasingly frustrated by its politics and politicians,

به شکل فزاینده‌ای احساس خشم نسبت به سیاست‌ها و سیاستمداران‌ش داریم،

sometimes to the point of despair or hurt or anger.

تا جایی که گاهی به ناامیدی، یا آسیب یا خشم می‌رسه.

I want to talk about emotions

من می‌خوام راجع به احساسات حرف بزنم

and the need to boost our emotional intelligence.

و نیازی که برای تقویت هوش احساسی‌مون وجود داره.

I think it's a pity

فکر می‌کنم حیفه

that mainstream political theory pays very little attention to emotions.

که نظریه‌ی سیاسی غالب توجه خیلی کمی به احساسات می‌کنه.

Oftentimes, analysts and experts are so busy with data and metrics

اکثر اوقات، تحلیل‌گران و متخصصین چنان سرگرم اطلاعات و متریک هستن

that they seem to forget those things in life

که به نظر میاد فراموش می‌کنن چیزهایی در زندگی

that are difficult to measure

که اندازه‌گیری‌شون دشواره

and perhaps impossible to cluster under statistical models.

و شاید دسته‌بندی‌شون در این قالب‌های آماری غیرممکنه،

But I think this is a mistake, for two main reasons.

ولی من فکر می‌کنم این کار اشتباهه، به دو دلیل مهم.

Firstly, because we are emotional beings.

در وهله‌ی اول به این دلیل که ما موجوداتی احساسی هستیم.

As human beings, I think we all are like that.

به عنوان انسان، فکر می‌کنم همه‌مون همین‌طوریم.

But secondly, and this is new,

ولی در وهله‌ی دوم، که این موضوع جدیدیه،

we have entered a new stage in world history

ما به مرحله‌ای جدید از تاریخ دنیا وارد شده‌ایم

in which collective sentiments guide and misguide politics

که در اون احساسات جمعی بیش از هر وقت دیگه‌ای

more than ever before.

می‌تونه هدایت‌کننده یا منحرف‌کننده‌ی سیاست‌ها باشه.

And through social media and social networking,

و از طریق شبکه‌های اجتماعی و رسانه‌های اجتماعی

these sentiments are further amplified,

این احساسات بیشتر گسترده می‌شن،

polarized, and they travel around the world quite fast.

دوقطبی می‌شن، و با سرعت زیادی در سراسر دنیا منتشر می‌شن.

Ours is the age of anxiety, anger,

زمانه‌ی ما عصر تشویش، خشم،

distrust, resentment

بی‌اعتمادی، نفرت،

and, I think, lots of fear.

و فکر می‌کنم، میزان زیادی ترسه.

But here's the thing:

ولی موضوع اینه:

even though there's plenty of research about economic factors,

گرچه تحقیقات زیادی در مورد عوامل اقتصادی وجود دارن،

there's relatively few studies about emotional factors.

به نسبت تعداد کمی تحقیقات در مورد عوامل احساسی صورت گرفته.

Why is it that we underestimate feelings and perceptions?

دلیل اینکه ما احساسات و ادراکات رو دست کم می‌گیریم چیه؟

I think it's going to be one of our biggest intellectual challenges,

فکر می‌کنم این موضوع قراره تبدیل به یکی از بزرگ‌ترین چالش‌های فکری ما بشه،

because our political systems are replete with emotions.

چرا که نظام‌های سیاسی ما خالی از احساسات‌ هستن.

In country after country,

یکی یکی شاهد هستیم در کشورها،

we have seen illiberal politicians exploiting these emotions.

سیاست‌مداران مستبد از این احساسات سواستفاده می‌کنن.

And yet within the academia and among the intelligentsia,

اما هنوز بین جامعه‌ی دانشگاهی و جامعه‌ی روشنفکران،

we are yet to take emotions seriously.

مساله‌ی احساسات جدی گرفته نشده.

I think we should.

من فکر می‌کنم ما باید جدی‌ بگیریم.

And just like we should focus on economic inequality worldwide,

و درست همونطور که باید روی نابرابری اقتصادی در سراسر دنیا تمرکز کنیم،

we need to pay more attention to emotional and cognitive gaps worldwide

ما باید توجه بیشتری هم به شکاف‌های احساسی و ادراکی در سراسر دنیا داشته باشیم

and how to bridge these gaps,

و اینکه چطور می‌شه بین این شکاف‌ها پل زد،

because they do matter.

چون اون‌ها واقعا مهم هستن.

Years ago, when I was still living in Istanbul,

سال‌ها پیش، وقتی هنوز در استانبول زندگی می‌کردم،

an American scholar working on women writers in the Middle East

یک محقق آمریکایی که بر روی موضوع نویسندگان زن در خاورمیانه کار می‌کرد

came to see me.

به دیدن من اومد.

And at some point in our exchange, she said,

و در جایی از بحث‌مون گفت:

"I understand why you're a feminist,

"من می‌فهمم شما چرا فمینیست هستین،

because, you know, you live in Turkey."

برای اینکه، خب، در ترکیه زندگی می‌کنین."

And I said to her,

و من به او گفتم،

"I don't understand why you're not a feminist,

"من نمی‌فهمم شما چرا فمینیست نیستین،

because, you know, you live in America."

برای اینکه، خب، در آمریکا زندگی می‌کنین."

And she laughed.

و او خندید.

She took it as a joke,

فکر کرد شوخی می‌کنم،

and the moment passed.

But the way she had divided the world into two imaginary camps,

ولی جوری که او دنیا رو به دو گروه خیالی تقسیم کرده بود،

into two opposite camps --

به دو گروه مخالف --

it bothered me and it stayed with me.

من رو آزار داد و با من موند.

According to this imaginary map,

طبق این نقشه‌ی خیالی،

some parts of the world were liquid countries.

بعضی کشورها در جهان کشورهای سیال و ناپایدار هستن.

They were like choppy waters not yet settled.

اون‌ها شبیه آب‌های گسسته‌ای هستن که هنوز مستقر نشدن.

Some other parts of the world, namely the West,

بعضی قسمت‌های دیگه‌ی جهان، که به غرب معروف‌ن،

were solid, safe and stable.

جامد، امن و باثبات‌ن.

So it was the liquid lands that needed feminism

بنابراین سرزمین‌های سیال هستن که به فمینیسم، فعالیت مدنی،

and activism and human rights,

و حقوق بشر نیاز دارن،

and those of us who were unfortunate enough

و امثال ما که اون‌قدر بدشانس و بداقبال بودیم

to come from such places

که اهل چنین جاهایی باشیم

had to keep struggling for these most essential values.

باید به مبارزه و تلاش برای داشتن این ارزش‌های حیاتی ادامه بدیم.

But there was hope.

ولی امید وجود داشت.

Since history moved forward,

همین‌طور که تاریخ به پیش می‌ره،

even the most unsteady lands would someday catch up.

حتی بی‌ثبات‌ترین سرزمین‌ها هم بالاخره جبران مافات می‌کنن.

And meanwhile, the citizens of solid lands

و در همین حین، شهروندان سرزمین‌های پایدار

could take comfort in the progress of history

خیال‌شون از پیشرفت تاریخ

and in the triumph of the liberal order.

و برتری نظام آزادی‌خواهانه راحته.

They could support the struggles of other people elsewhere,

اون‌ها می‌تونن از تلاش‌ها و درگیری‌های آدم‌های نقاط دیگر دنیا حمایت کنن،

but they themselves did not have to struggle

ولی دیگه خودشون مجبور به تلاش و مبارزه

for the basics of democracy anymore,

برای به دست آوردن اصول اولیه‌ی دمکراسی نبودن.

because they were beyond that stage.

چون از این مرحله گذر کرده بودن.

I think in the year 2016,

فکر می‌کنم در سال ۲۰۱۶،

this hierarchical geography was shattered to pieces.

این سلسله مراتب جغرافیایی فرو ریخت.

Our world no longer follows this dualistic pattern

دنیای ما دیگه از اون نقشه‌ی دوسویه که در ذهن

in the scholar's mind, if it ever did.

اون محقق بود پیروی نمی‌کنه، اگر فرض کنیم قبلا پیروی می‌کرده.

Now we know that history does not necessarily move forward.

حالا ما می‌دونیم تاریخ لزوما رو به جلو نمی‌ره.

Sometimes it draws circles,

گاهی دور می‌زنه،

even slides backwards,

گاهی به عقب برمی‌گرده،

and that generations can make the same mistakes

و اینکه نسل‌ها می‌تونن همون اشتباهاتی رو مرتکب بشن

that their great-grandfathers had made.

که نیاکان‌شون مرتکب شدن.

And now we know that there's no such thing

و ما حالا می‌دونیم چیزی به عنوان

as solid countries versus liquid countries.

کشورهای پایدار در برابر کشورهای ناپایدار وجود نداره.

In fact, we are all living in liquid times,

در حقیقت، ما همه داریم در زمانه‌ی سیال و ناپایدار زندگی می‌کنیم،

just like the late Zygmunt Bauman told us.

همون‌طور که زیگموند باومن مرحوم به ما گفت.

And Bauman had another definition for our age.

و باومن تعریف دیگری هم از زمانه‌ی ما داشت.

He used to say we are all going to be walking on moving sands.

او می‌گفت همه‌ی ما روی شن‌های متحرک راه خواهیم رفت.

And if that's the case, I think,

و فکر می‌کنم، اگر این اتفاق بیفته،

it should concern us women more than men,

برای ما زن‌ها نگران‌کننده‌تر از مردها خواهد بود،

because when societies slide backwards into authoritarianism,

چرا که وقتی جوامع به عقب و به خودکامگی برمی‌گردن،

nationalism or religious fanaticism,

به ناسیونالیسم یا افراطی‌گری دینی،

women have much more to lose.

زن‌ها چیز بیشتری برای از دست دادن دارن.

That is why this needs to be a vital moment,

به همین دلیل این باید لحظه‌ای حیاتی باشه

not only for global activism,

نه فقط برای فعالیت مدنی در جهان،

but in my opinion, for global sisterhood as well.

که به نظر من، برای انجمن‌های زنانه جهانی.

But I want to make a little confession before I go any further.

Until recently, whenever I took part in an international conference or festival,

تا همین اواخر، هروقت در یک کنفرانس یا فستیوال بین‌المللی شرکت می‌کردم،

I would be usually one of the more depressed speakers.

معمولا من یکی از افسرده‌ترین سخنرانان بودم.

(Laughter)

Having seen how our dreams of democracy and how our dreams of coexistence

اینکه شاهد بودم چطور رویاهای ما از دمکراسی و هم‌زیستی

were crushed in Turkey,

در ترکیه نابود شدن،

both gradually but also with a bewildering speed,

هم به مرور و هم با سرعتی حیرت‌آور،

over the years I've felt quite demoralized.

طی گذشت سال‌ها من کاملا دلسرد شده بودم.

And at these festivals there would be some other gloomy writers,

و در این فستیوال‌ها نویسندگان غمگین دیگری حضور داشتن،

and they would come from places such as Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan,

و از جاهایی مثل مصر، نیجریه، پاکستان،

Bangladesh, Philippines, China, Venezuela, Russia.

بنگلادش، فیلیپین، چین، ونزوئلا و روسیه اومده بودن.

And we would smile at each other in sympathy,

و ما با همدردی به هم لبخند می‌زدیم،

this camaraderie of the doomed.

این جماعت ویران‌شده.

And you could call us WADWIC:

و می‌تونستین اسم‌مون رو WADWIC (بنبونا) بگذارین:

Worried and Depressed Writers International Club.

Worried and Depressed Writers International Club. باشگاه نویسندگان بین‌المللی نگران و افسرده.

But then things began to change,

ولی بعد اوضاع شروع به تغییر کرد،

and suddenly our club became more popular,

و ناگهان باشگاه ما محبوب‌تر شد،

and we started to have new members.

و ما شروع به عضوگیری کردیم.

I remember --

یادم میاد --

(Laughter)

I remember Greek writers and poets joined first, came on board.

یادم میاد اولین گروهی که به ما پیوستن نویسندگان و شعرای یونانی بودن.

And then writers from Hungary and Poland,

و بعد نویسندگانی از مجارستان و لهستان،

and then, interestingly, writers from Austria, the Netherlands, France,

و بعد جالب بود که نویسندگانی از اتریش، هلند، فرانسه،

and then writers from the UK, where I live and where I call my home,

و بعد نویسندگانی از انگلستان، جاییکه من زندگی می‌کنم و بهش می‌گم خونه،

and then writers from the USA.

و بعد نویسندگانی از ایالات متحده آمریکا.

Suddenly, there were more of us

ناگهان تعداد مایی که برای

feeling worried about the fate of our nations

سرنوشت سرزمین‌هامون و آینده دنیا نگران بودیم

and the future of the world.

بیشتر شد.

And maybe there were more of us now

و شاید حالا تعداد مایی که

feeling like strangers in our own motherlands.

در سرزمین‌های مادری‌مون احساس غربت می‌کردیم بیشتر شده بود.

And then this bizarre thing happened.

و بعد این اتفاق عجیب افتاد.

Those of us who used to be very depressed for a long time,

اون دسته از ما که برای مدتی طولانی افسرده بودیم،

we started to feel less depressed,

کم‌تر احساس افسردگی کردیم،

whereas the newcomers, they were so not used to feeling this way

درحالیکه تازه‌ واردها، که به این‌طور احساسات عادت نداشتن،

that they were now even more depressed.

So you could see writers from Bangladesh or Turkey or Egypt

trying to console their colleagues

from Brexit Britain or from post-election USA.

از طرح خروج بریتانیا از اتحادیه اروپا گرفته تا پس از انتخابات ریاست جمهوری آمریکا.

But joking aside,

از شوخی گذشته،

I think our world is full of unprecedented challenges,

فکر می‌کنم دنیای ما پر از چالش‌های بی‌سابقه‌ست،

and this comes with an emotional backlash,

و این موضوع واکنشی احساسی به دنبال داره،

because in the face of high-speed change,

برای اینکه در مواجهه با تغییر سریع،

many people wish to slow down,

خیلی از افراد دوست دارن سرعت‌شون رو کم کنن،

and when there's too much unfamiliarity,

و وقتی میزان ناشناخته‌ها زیاد باشه.

people long for the familiar.

مردم دل‌شون برای اون‌چه آشناست تنگ می‌شه.

And when things get too confusing,

و وقتی اوضاع خیلی گیج‌کننده بشه،

many people crave simplicity.

خیلی از مردم دل‌شون سادگی می‌خواد.

This is a very dangerous crossroads,

این یک تقاطع خیلی خطرناکه،

because it's exactly where the demagogue enters into the picture.

چون این‌جا دقیقا همون‌جاییه که فرد عوام‌فریب وارد تصویر می‌شه.

The demagogue understands how collective sentiments work

عوام‌فریب می‌دونه احساسات جمعی چطور کار می‌کنن

and how he -- it's usually a he -- can benefit from them.

و اینکه چطور او -- که معمولا یک مرده -- می‌تونه از این موضوع استفاده کنه.

He tells us that we all belong in our tribes,

او به ما می‌گه که همه‌مون به قبایل‌مون تعلق داریم،

and he tells us that we will be safer if we are surrounded by sameness.

و به ما می‌گه اگر با امثال خودمون احاطه بشیم، امنیت بیشتری خواهیم داشت.

Demagogues come in all sizes and in all shapes.

عوام‌فریب‌ها در همه‌جور اندازه و رنگی پیدا می‌شن.

This could be the eccentric leader of a marginal political party

این فرد می‌تونه یک رهبر نامتعارف از یک حزب سیاسی در حاشیه

somewhere in Europe,

جایی در اروپا باشه،

or an Islamist extremist imam preaching dogma and hatred,

یا یک پیشوای افراطی اسلام‌گرا که نفرت و عقاید افراطی رو ترویج می‌کنه،

or it could be a white supremacist Nazi-admiring orator somewhere else.

یا می‌تونه یک سخنران نژادپرست برتری‌طلب نازی‌دوست در گوشه‌ی دیگری از جهان باشه.

All these figures, at first glance -- they seem disconnected.

تمام این شخصیت‌ها، در نگاه اول -- غیرمرتبط به نظر میان.

But I think they feed each other,

ولی من فکر می‌کنم اون‌ها همدیگه رو تغذیه می‌کنن،

and they need each other.

و به همدیگه احتیاج دارن.

And all around the world,

در سرتاسر دنیا،

when we look at how demagogues talk and how they inspire movements,

وقتی به طرز صحبت عوام‌فریب‌ها نگاه کنیم و اینکه چطور الهام‌بخش جنبش‌ها می‌شن،

I think they have one unmistakable quality in common:

فکر می‌کنم تمام اون‌ها یک کیفیت ‌آشکار مشترک دارن:

they strongly, strongly dislike plurality.

اون‌ها به شدت و حدت از تکثر نفرت دارن.

They cannot deal with multiplicity.

اون‌ها نمی‌تونن با کثرت کنار بیان.

Adorno used to say,

آدورنو می‌گفت:

"Intolerance of ambiguity is the sign of an authoritarian personality."

"عدم تحمل ابهام نشانه‌ای از یک شخصیت خودکامه‌ست."

But I ask myself:

ولی من از خودم می‌پرسم:

What if that same sign,

اگر همین نشانه،

that same intolerance of ambiguity --

همین عدم تحمل ابهام --

what if it's the mark of our times, of the age we're living in?

اگر همین نشانه‌ی زمانه‌ی ما، عصری که توش زندگی می‌کنیم باشه چی؟

Because wherever I look, I see nuances withering away.

چون من به هرجا نگاه می‌کنم تفاوت‌هایی رو می‌بینم که رو به محو شدن هستن.

On TV shows, we have one anti-something speaker

در برنامه‌های تلویزیونی، یک سخنگوی ضد یک چیز داریم

situated against a pro-something speaker.

در مقابل یک سخنگوی حامی یک چیز.

Yeah? It's good ratings.

مگه نه؟ آمار بیننده‌ها مهمه.

It's even better if they shout at each other.

اگه بر سر هم فریاد بکشن که چه بهتر.

Even in academia, where our intellect is supposed to be nourished,

حتی در محیط‌های آکادمیک، جایی که افراد تحصیلکرده‌ی ما قراره رشد کنن،

you see one atheist scholar competing with a firmly theist scholar,

شما شاهد رقابت یک دانشمند خداناباور با یک دانشمند به شدت خداپرست هستین،

but it's not a real intellectual exchange,

ولی این یک مبادله‌ی روشنفکرانه‌ی واقعی نیست،

because it's a clash between two certainties.

چون یک برخورد میان دو قطعیته.

I think binary oppositions are everywhere.

فکر می‌کنم تقابل‌های دوگانه در همه‌جا وجود دارن.

So slowly and systematically,

بنابراین آهسته و نظام‌مند،

we are being denied the right to be complex.

حق پیچیده بودن از ما سلب می‌شه.

Istanbul, Berlin, Nice, Paris, Brussels,

استانبول، برلین، نیس، پاریس، بروکسل،

Dhaka, Baghdad, Barcelona:

داکا، بغداد، بارسلون:

we have seen one horrible terror attack after another.

ما شاهد حملات تروریستی وحشتناک یکی پس از دیگری بودیم.

And when you express your sorrow, and when you react against the cruelty,

و وقتی شما ناراحتی‌تون رو بروز می‌دین، و وقتی در مقابل بی‌رحمی واکنش نشون می‌دین،

you get all kinds of reactions,

شما با انواع واکنش‌ها مواجه خواهید شد

messages on social media.

پیغام‌هایی که در شبکه‌های اجتماعی دریافت خواهید کرد.

But one of them is quite disturbing,

اما یک نوع از این پیغام‌ها واقعا ناراحت‌کننده‌ست،

only because it's so widespread.

فقط به این دلیل که خیلی شایع هست

They say, "Why do you feel sorry for them?

اون‌ها می‌گن، "تو چرا دل‌ت براشون می‌سوزه؟

Why do you feel sorry for them?

چرا دل‌ت براشون می‌سوزه؟

Why don't you feel sorry for civilians in Yemen

چرا دل‌ت برای غیرنظامیان یمن

or civilians in Syria?"

یا غیرنظامیان سوریه نمی‌سوزه؟"

And I think the people who write such messages

و من فکر می‌کنم آدم‌هایی که چنین پیغام‌هایی رو می‌نویسن

do not understand

درک نمی‌کنن

that we can feel sorry for and stand in solidarity with

که می‌شه با قربانیان خشونت و تروریسم همدردی کرد و باهاشون همبستگی داشت

victims of terrorism and violence in the Middle East, in Europe,

چه در خاورمیانه، چه در اروپا،

in Asia, in America, wherever, everywhere,

آسیا، آمریکا، هرجا، همه جا.

equally and simultaneously.

به طور برابر و همزمان.

They don't seem to understand that we don't have to pick one pain

به نظر می‌رسه اون‌ها درک نمی‌کنن که می‌شه یک درد

and one place over all others.

و یک مکان رو به دیگری ترجیح نداد.

But I think this is what tribalism does to us.

ولی فکر می‌کنم قبیله‌گرایی با ما این کارو می‌کنه.

It shrinks our minds, for sure,

مطمئنا، ذهن‌های ما رو کوچیک می‌کنه،

but it also shrinks our hearts,

ولی قلب‌های ما رو هم کوچیک می‌کنه،

to such an extent that we become numb to the suffering of other people.

تا اون‌جا که ما رو نسبت به درد و رنج دیگران بی‌حس می‌کنه.

And the sad truth is, we weren't always like this.

و حقیقت تلخ این‌جاست که، ما از اول اینطوری نبودیم.

I had a children's book out in Turkey,

من در ترکیه یک کتاب کودکان نوشته بودم،

and when the book was published, I did lots of events.

و وقتی کتاب منتشر شد، من به مراسم‌های زیادی رفتم.

I went to many primary schools,

به خیلی از دبستان‌ها رفتم،

which gave me a chance to observe younger kids in Turkey.

که به من این مجال رو داد که بچه‌های کوچک در ترکیه رو بررسی کنم.

And it was always amazing to see how much empathy, imagination

و همیشه برام جالب بود که می‌دیدم چقدر نوع‌دوستی، تخیل

and chutzpah they have.

و جسارت در اون‌ها هست.

These children are much more inclined to become global citizens

این بچه‌ها خیلی بیشتر ‌آمادگی تبدیل شدن به شهروندان جهانی رو دارن

than nationalists at that age.

به نسبت ناسیونالیست‌ها در اون سن و سال.

And it's wonderful to see, when you ask them,

و فوق‌العاده‌ست که می‌بینی، وقتی ازشون می‌پرسی،

so many of them want to be poets and writers,

خیلی‌هاشون می‌خوان نویسنده و شاعر بشن،

and girls are just as confident as boys,

و اعتماد به نفس دخترها هم به اندازه‌ی پسرهاست،

if not even more.

اگه بیشتر نباشه.

But then I would go to high schools,

اما بعد به دبیرستان‌ها سر زدم،

and everything has changed.

و همه‌چیز عوض شده بود.

Now nobody wants to be a writer anymore,

حالا دیگه هیچ‌کس نمی‌خواست نویسنده بشه،

now nobody wants to be a novelist anymore,

حالا دیگه هیچ‌کس نمی‌خواست رمان‌نویس بشه،

and girls have become timid,

و دخترها خجالتی شده بودن،

they are cautious, guarded,

محتاط و محافظه‌کار شده بودن،

reluctant to speak up in the public space,

حرف زدن در فضای عمومی براشون سخت شده بود،

because we have taught them --

چون ما به اون‌ها یاد داده بودیم --

the family, the school, the society --

خانواده، مدرسه، جامعه --

we have taught them to erase their individuality.

ما به اون‌ها یاد داده بودیم فردیت‌شون رو پاک کنن.

I think East and West,

فکر می‌کنم در شرق و غرب،

we are losing multiplicity,

ما داریم تکثرگرایی رو از دست می‌دیم،

both within our societies and within ourselves.

هم در جوامع‌مون و هم در وجود خودمون.

And coming from Turkey, I do know that the loss of diversity

و به عنوان کسی که از ترکیه اومده، من می‌دونم که فقدان تکثرگرایی

is a major, major loss.

یک فقدان خیلی خیلی بزرگه.

Today, my motherland became the world's biggest jailer

امروز، سرزمین مادری من بزرگ‌ترین زندان

for journalists,

روزنامه‌نگارانه،

surpassing even China's sad record.

حتی از رکورد ناراحت‌کننده‌ی چین هم عبور کرده.

And I also believe that what happened over there in Turkey

و من هنوز معتقدم اون‌چه در ترکیه اتفاق افتاده

can happen anywhere.

می‌تونه هر جایی اتفاق بیفته.

It can even happen here.

حتی می‌تونه این‌جا اتفاق بیفته.

So just like solid countries was an illusion,

بنابراین همون‌طوری که ایده‌ی کشورهای پایدار یک توهم بود،

singular identities is also an illusion,

هویت‌های فردی هم یک توهمه،

because we all have a multiplicity of voices inside.

چرا که ما همه مجموعه‌ای از صداها در درون‌مون داریم.

The Iranian, the Persian poet, Hafiz,

شاعر ایرانی، فارسی‌زبان، حافظ،

used to say, "You carry in your soul every ingredient necessary

گفته "تو در روح خودت هر‌آن‌چه لازم است

to turn your existence into joy.

برای تبدیل وجود خودت به شادی رو داری.

All you have to do is to mix those ingredients."

تنها کاری که باید بکنی اینه که اون‌ها رو با هم ترکیب کنی.

And I think mix we can.

و من فکر می‌کنم ترکیب رو ما می‌تونیم انجام بدیم.

I am an Istanbulite,

من اهل استانبول‌ام

but I'm also attached to the Balkans,

ولی با منطقه‌ی بالکان هم پیوندهایی دارم،

the Aegean, the Mediterranean,

اژه، مدیترانه،

the Middle East, the Levant.

خاورمیانه، سرزمین‌های شرق مدیترانه.

I am a European by birth, by choice,

من متولد اروپام، انتخاب خودم بوده،

the values that I uphold.

ارزش‌هایی که حفظشون می‌کنم.

I have become a Londoner over the years.

من طی سال‌ها به یک لندن‌نشین تبدیل شدم.

I would like to think of myself as a global soul, as a world citizen,

دوست دارم خودم رو یک روح جهانی، یک شهروند جهانی بدونم،

a nomad and an itinerant storyteller.

یک کولی و یک قصه‌گوی دوره‌گرد.

I have multiple attachments, just like all of us do.

من تعلقات زیادی دارم، مثل همه‌ی آدم‌های دیگه.

And multiple attachments mean multiple stories.

و تعلقات فراوان به معنای داستان‌های فراوانه.

As writers, we always chase stories, of course,

البته به عنوان نویسنده، ما همیشه دنبال قصه‌ها هستیم،

but I think we are also interested in silences,

ولی فکر می‌کنم سکوت‌ها هم برامون جالب‌ان،

the things we cannot talk about,

چیزهایی که نمی‌تونیم در موردشون حرف بزنیم

political taboos, cultural taboos.

تابوهای سیاسی، تابوهای فرهنگی.

We're also interested in our own silences.

سکوت‌ خودمون هم برامون جالبه.

I have always been very vocal about and written extensively

من همیشه صدام بلند بوده و به تفصیل نوشتم

about minority rights, women's rights,

در مورد حقوق اقلیت، حقوق زنان،

LGBT rights.

حقوق دگرباش‌ها و هم‌جنس‌گرایان.

But as I was thinking about this TED Talk,

ولی وقتی داشتم به این صحبت‌م در TED فکر می‌کردم،

I realized one thing:

متوجه موضوعی شدم:

I have never had the courage to say in a public space

من هرگز جرات نکرده بودم که در فضای عمومی بگم

that I was bisexual myself,

که خودم هم زمانی دوجنس‌‌گرا بودم،

because I so feared the slander

چون اون‌قدر از تهمت‌ها می‌ترسیدم

and the stigma and the ridicule

و از بی‌آبرویی و از تمسخر

and the hatred that was sure to follow.

و نفرتی که قطعا به دنبال‌ش خواهد اومد.

But of course, one should never, ever, remain silent

ولی البته، هیچ‌کس نباید، هرگز، به خاطر ترس از پیچیدگی

for fear of complexity.

ساکت بمونه.

And although I am no stranger to anxieties,

و علیرغم اینکه من با تشویش غریبه نیستم،

and although I am talking here about the power of emotions --

و علیرغم اینکه این‌جا دارم از قدرت احساسات حرف می‌زنم --

I do know the power of emotions --

من قدرت احساسات رو می‌شناسم --

I have discovered over time

در طی زمان فهمیدم که

that emotions are not limitless.

احساسات نامحدود نیستن.

You know? They have a limit.

می‌دونین؟ یه حدی دارن.

There comes a moment --

یک وقتی می‌رسه --

it's like a tipping point or a threshold --

چیزی شبیه نقطه‌ی وارونگی یا آستانه --

when you get tired of feeling afraid,

که دیگه از ترسیدن خسته می‌شین،

when you get tired of feeling anxious.

که دیگه از نگران بودن خسته می‌شین.

And I think not only individuals,

و من فکر می‌کنم نه تنها آدم‌ها،

but perhaps nations, too, have their own tipping points.

که شاید کشورها هم نقاط وارونگی خودشون رو دارن.

So even stronger than my emotions

بنابراین حتی قوی‌تر از احساسات من

is my awareness

آگاهی منه

that not only gender, not only identity,

که نه تنها جنسیت، نه تنها هویت

but life itself is fluid.

که خود زندگی سیاله.

They want to divide us into tribes,

اون‌ها می‌خوان ما رو به قبیله‌ها تقسیم کنن،

but we are connected across borders.

ولی ما از ورای مرزها به هم متصل‌ایم.

They preach certainty,

اون‌ها قطعیت رو ترویج می‌کنن،

but we know that life has plenty of magic

ولی ما می‌دونیم زندگی پر از جادو

and plenty of ambiguity.

و پر از ابهامه.

And they like to incite dualities,

و اون‌ها می‌خوان دوگانگی به وجود بیارن،

but we are far more nuanced than that.

ولی ما خیلی از این حرف‌ها ظریف و دقیق‌تریم.

So what can we do?

پس ما چی‌کار می‌تونیم بکنیم؟

I think we need to go back to the basics,

فکر می‌کنم ما باید به اصول برگردیم،

back to the colors of the alphabet.

به رنگ‌های حروف الفبا برگردیم.

The Lebanese poet Khalil Gibran used to say,

شاعر لبنانی خلیل جبران می‌گه،

"I learned silence from the talkative

"من سکوت را از پرحرفی آموختم

and tolerance from the intolerant

و تحمل را از بی‌قرار

and kindness from the unkind."

و مهربانی را از نامهربان."

I think it's a great motto for our times.

فکر می‌کنم این شعار خوبی برای روزگار ماست

So from populist demagogues, we will learn

پس ما از عوام‌فریب پوپولیست،

the indispensability of democracy.

ضرورت دمکراسی رو یاد می‌گیریم.

And from isolationists, we will learn the need for global solidarity.

و از انزواطلبان، نیاز برای همبستگی جهانی رو یاد می‌گیریم.

And from tribalists, we will learn the beauty of cosmopolitanism

و از قبیله‌گراها، زیبایی جهان‌وطن‌گرایی

and the beauty of diversity.

و زیبایی تکثرگرایی رو یاد می‌گیریم.

As I finish, I want to leave you with one word, or one taste.

صحبت‌م رو با یک کلمه یا یک طعم تموم می‌کنم.

The word "yurt" in Turkish means "motherland."

کلمه‌ی "yurt" در ترکی به معنای "سرزمین مادریه".

It means "homeland."

معناش "وطنه."

But interestingly, the word also means

ولی جالبه که این کلمه این معنا رو هم داره

"a tent used by nomadic tribes."

"چادری که قبیله‌های کولی استفاده می‌کنن."

And I like that combination, because it makes me think

و من این ترکیب رو دوست دارم، چون من رو به فکر وامی‌داره که

homelands do not need to be rooted in one place.

وطن‌ها لازم نیست در یک مکان ریشه دوانده باشن.

They can be portable.

اون‌ها می‌تونن متحرک باشن.

We can take them with us everywhere.

ما می‌تونیم اون‌ها رو با خودمون هرجایی ببریم.

And I think for writers, for storytellers,

و فکر می‌کنم برای نویسنده‌ها، برای راویان داستان،

at the end of the day,

در نهایت،

there is one main homeland,

تنها یک وطن وجود داره،

and it's called "Storyland."

و اسم‌ش هست "سرزمین قصه‌ها."

And the taste of that word

و طعم این کلمه

is the taste of freedom.

طعم آزادیه.
