This is me at age seven.

وەستان لێرە لە کەمپی پەنابەرانی ،کاکومە لە ڕاستی ناچێت

And this is also me.

.و ئێستا پڕم لە هەست

ئەوانە ئەو زەویانەن کە من لێی لەدایک بووم

To be standing here in Kakuma refugee camp feels so surreal,

.و ٧ ساڵی سەرەتای ژیانم لەوێ بەسەر برد

and I'm overcome with so much emotion.

پێم وایە خەڵک بە بیستنی ئەوە سەریان سوڕماوە

.کە من لێرە لە کاکومە پەروەردە کراوم

These very grounds are where I was born

and spent the first seven years of my life.

,بەڵام دڵ خۆشبووم

و زیرەک بووم، و هاوڕێشم هەبوو

I think many people are surprised to hear

له‌سه‌روی هه‌موشی، هیوام به‌ .ئاینده‌یه‌كی گه‌ش هه‌بوو

that I had a great upbringing here at Kakuma.

.ئەوە ناگەیەنێت کە هیچ کۆسپێکمان نەبووبێ

But I was happy,

I was smart, I had friends

.مه‌به‌ستم، كوڕی تێكۆشه‌ری لێبو

and above all, I had hope for a brighter future.

هه‌ندێك كات به‌ نه‌خۆشی مه‌لاریا نه‌خۆش ده‌كه‌وتم

.و نەشمدەزانی ژەمی داهاتومان لە کوێوە دێت

That's not to say that we didn't have our obstacles.

I mean, boy were there struggles.

بەڵام ئەو ژیریەی کۆمەڵگەی کاکومە هەیەتی

I would sometimes get sick with malaria

و ئەو شانازی بەخۆکردنەیان

and didn't always know where our next meal would come from.

.بێهاوتا بوو

But the sense of community that is here in Kakuma

کاتێک منداڵتر بووم، بیرمە .ئاژاوەکان سەریان هەڵدا

and the pride that everyone here possesses

خەڵک لە باگڕاوندی جیاوازەوە هاتبوون

is simply unparalleled.

.و بە یەک زمان قسەیان نەدەکرد

When I was younger, I remember conflicts breaking out.

لە کۆتایدا، سواهیلی

وه‌ك سه‌ره‌كیترین زمان

.لێره‌ بڵاوبۆوه‌

That tends to happen when people come from different backgrounds

بومە هاوڕێی منداڵەکانی کەمپەکە

and don't speak the same language.

،و تەنانەت کلتوری یەکتریشمان قبوڵ دەکرد

Eventually, Swahili --

the main language here --

وه‌ك ئاهەنگ گێرانی پشوەکانی وەک کریسمس .هەرچەندە ئیسلامیش بووم

became our common ground.

I made friends with the kids at the camp

،و منداڵەکانی دیکەش کلتوری منیان قبوڵ بوو

and even started embracing some of their cultures,

تەنانەت هەندێک کات لە تەنیشت .منەوە نوێژیان دەکرد

celebrating holidays like Christmas even though I was raised Muslim.

،ئاسان بوو، وەک منداڵێک، بەیەکەوە بین

The other kids would embrace my culture as well,

و بیرو باوەڕەکانمان بگونجێنین

بۆ پێک هێنانی ژینگەیەکی .بێهاوتا و فرەکلتور

sometimes even praying right alongside me.

It was easy, as children, to come together,

ناوم هەلیمە ئەدینە

blend all of our beliefs

،موسوڵمانێکی، ڕەش پێستی .سۆماڵی ئەمریکیم لە کینیا

to form our own unique, multicultural environment.

My name is Halima Aden

هەندێک کەس بە نوێكارناوم دەهێنن

and I'm a black, Muslim, Somali-American from Kenya.

،یەکەم شاژنی موسولمان بوم له‌ خوێندنگاكه‌م

و یەکەم نوێنه‌ری خوێندکاری سۆماڵی بووم لە کۆلیچ

،و لە زۆر شوێن یەکەم ئافرەتی باڵاپوش بووم

Some have called me a trailblazer --

I was the first Muslim homecoming queen at my high school,

وەک خانمی مینیسۆتای ولایەتە یەکگرتوەکان ،لە ئاهەنگی جوانی

the first Somali student senator at my college

و ڕێڕه‌وی فڕۆكه‌خانه‌ی میلان و هەفتە مۆدێلی نیو یۆرک

and the first hijab-wearing woman in many places,

و تەنانەت لە بەرگی مێژوی"جلوبه‌رگی تازه‌"ی .به‌ریتانیش

like the Miss Minnesota USA beauty pageant,

،وەک دەیبینن

the runways of Milan and New York Fashion Weeks

من ناترسم ببمە یەکەم و هەنگاوی ،نوێ بنێم بۆخۆم

and even on the historic cover of British "Vogue."

،بۆ گۆڕینی ئەو کێشەو نەهامەتیانە

.چونکە بوون بە کەمینە ئەوەیە

As you can see,

بۆخۆت گۆڕانکاری دروست بکەیت

I'm not afraid to be the first, to step out on my own,

.و وەک مرۆڤێکی توانا جیاواز پیشانبدرێیت

to take risks and seek change,

because that's what being a minority is about.

و ئێستا شەقام بەکاردەهێنم بۆ بڵاوکردنەوەی .پەیامە گرینگە پەسندکراەوکانم

It's about using yourself as a vessel to create change

and being a human representation for the power of diversity.

.بەڵام ئەوەش ئاسان نییە

And now I use my platform to spread an important message of acceptance.

یەکەمجار گەڕاینەوە ویلایەتە یەکگرتوەکان ،لویس، و ماڵی میسۆریمان، دروستكرد

،بیرمە پرسیارم لە دایکم کرد "ئەوە بەڕاستی ئەمریکایە؟"

But it hasn't always been easy.

When we first arrived to the United States and made St. Louis, Missouri home,

،شتی لێبوو کە ئاشنابونی ناخۆش بوو

وەک بیستنی دەنگی تەقە لە شەودا

I remember asking my mom, "Is this really America?"

.و شەقامەکانیان هەژاردیاربوون

.و شتیشی هەبوو کە جیاوازبوون

There were things that were sadly familiar,

،کاتێک چومە پۆلی یەک

like hearing gunshots at night

.تێبینیمکرد منداڵەکان بە گروپ یاریان دەکرد

and the streets looking impoverished.

".کە لە ئەمریکا، پێی دەڵێن "کۆمەڵ

But there were things that were also very different.

.لێرە، هەموو بەیەکەوە یاریمان دەکرد

Like when I started first grade,

،ڕەگەز گرینگ نەبوو

I noticed how the kids played in groups.

.و نەژاد گرینگ نەبوو

In America, we call them "cliques."

،بیرمە پرسیارم لە خۆم کرد

Back here, we all played together.

بۆچی لە سواهیلی تێناگەن؟"

Gender didn't matter,

سواهیلی زمانێکە هەموو خەڵک ".بەیەکەوە کۆدەکاتەوە

and race most certainly never mattered.

I remember asking myself,

،ئەوەی کێشەكی خراپتركرد

"Why don't they understand Swahili?

ئەو خوێندنگایەی لێی ناونوس کرابوم .پڕۆگرامی ئینگلیزی نەبوو

Swahili is the language that brings people together."

،بۆیە هەمو ڕۆژێ لەخەو هەڵدەستام

دەچوومە خوێندنگە و دادەنیشم

To make matters worse,

the school I was enrolled in didn't have an English immersion program.

.و هیچ فێر نەدەبووم

،لێرە دەستم بە هیوا وەنکردن کرد

So everyday I would get up,

،و هیچم نەدەویست جگە لە گەڕانەوە بۆ کاکومە

go to school, sit in my desk

.کەمپی پەنابەران

and never learn a thing.

This is when I started losing hope,

هه‌ر زوو دایکم زانی کە هەندەک سۆماڵی پەناگەیان دۆزیوەتەوە

and I wanted nothing more than return to Kakuma,

.لە شارێکی بچوک لە مینیسۆتا

a refugee camp.

.بۆیە کاتێک ٨ ساڵ بووم چووین بۆ مینۆسیتا

Soon, my mother learned that many Somalis found refuge

ژیانم گۆرا کاتێک خوێندکارەکانم دیت ،بە سۆماڵی قسەدەکەن

in a small town in Minnesota.

و چومە ئەو خوێندنگەیەی پرۆگرامی ئینگلیزی بوو

So when I was eight, we moved to Minnesota.

،و مامۆستاکانی بەرزترو بەتواناتر بوون

My life changed as I met other students who spoke Somali,

،چەند کاتژمێرێک دوای خوێندنگاو نانی نیوەڕۆ

attended a school that had an English immersion program

.یارمەتیان دەدام بۆ سەرکەوتن لە پۆلدا

and found teachers that would go above and beyond,

بوون بە منداڵی پەنابەر فێری کردم یەک کەس :دەتوانێت له‌ هەموو شت بێبه‌ش بێت

staying there after school hours and lunch breaks,

dedicated to helping me find success in the classroom.

،خواردن، و پەناگه‌، و ئاوی خاوێن

،وتەنانەت هاوڕێیەتیش

Being a child refugee has taught me that one could be stripped of everything:

بەڵام یەک شت کەس ناتوانێ لێت دوربخاتەوە

.پەروەردەیە

food, shelter, clean drinking water,

خوێندنەکەم بەرەو لوتکە برد و

even friendship,

but the one thing that no one could ever take away from you

هه‌ر زوو له‌ پۆلدا ده‌ستم .به‌گه‌شانه‌وه‌ كرد

is your education.

کاتێک گەورەتر بووم، زیاتر ئاگاداری ئەوانەی دیکە بووم

So I made studying my top priority

.و چۆن نەژادو باگڕاوندمیان بینیبوو

and soon started flourishing within the classroom.

بەتایبەتی، کاتێک لەچکم لەسەر کرد .کە پێی دەڵێن سەر پۆش

As I grew older, I became more aware of others

.کاتێک سەرەتا لەسەرم کرد، دڵخۆش بووم

and how they viewed my race and background.

بیرمە چاوم لە دایکم دەکرد، .دەمویست وەک ئەو جوان بم

Specifically, when I started wearing the head scarf known as a hijab.

،بەڵام کاتێک دەستم بە خوێندنی ناوەندی کرد

When I first started wearing it, I was excited.

خوێندکارەکان گاڵتەیان ،پێدەکردم کە قژم پێوە نییە

I remember admiring my mother's, and I wanted to emulate her beauty.

،بۆ ئەوەی بۆیان بسەلمێنم کە هەڵەن

قژی خۆمم پیشاندان

But when I started middle school,

،شتێک دژی بیروباوەڕەکەمە .بەڵام هەستم کرد پێویستە بیکەم

the students teased me about not having hair,

so to prove them wrong,

.لەو کاتەدا دەبو زۆر بە خراپی خۆم بگونجێنم

I started showing them my hair --

something that goes against my beliefs, but something I felt pressured to do.

،کاتێک بیرله‌ كێشه‌ی نەژاد و ئاین ،و ناسنامە، دەکەمەوە

I wanted so badly to fit in at the time.

.یادگاری ئازاربه‌خشم بیر دێته‌وه‌

When I reflect on the issues of race, religion, identity,

ئاسانە بۆ من کە کلتوری ئەوانی دیکە تاوانبار بکەم

،به‌وه‌ی وایكرد من ئازار بچێژم

a lot of painful memories come to mind.

،بەڵام کاتێ قوڵتر بیردەکەمەوە

،بۆم دەردەکەوێت کە کاریگەرترین

It would be easy for me to blame those of another culture

و ئیجابیترین، ئەو ڕوداوانەی بەسەرم هات بۆ گۆڕینی ژیانم

for making me feel the pain I felt,

but when I think deeper,

سوپاسی ئەو خەڵکانە دەکەم .کە لە من جیاوازترن

I also recognize that the most impactful,

ئەو چركه‌یه‌ بوو بڕیارم دا بچمە دەرەوەی ئەو هەرێمە ئاسودەیەی خۆم

positive, life-changing events that have happened to me

و بەژداری ئاهەنگی .لەبەرکردنی باڵاپۆشیم کرد

are thanks to those people who are different than me.

ئەوەم وەک هەلێک بینی بۆ گەیاندنی دەنگم بەو ئافرەتانەی

It was at this moment that I decided to step outside of my comfort zone

.وەک منن و هەستیان بەوە کردوە

and compete in a pageant wearing a hijab and burkini.

،و هەروەها دیلی ئەو تاجە گوڵینە نەبویتم

I saw it as an opportunity to be a voice for women

.کە چەندین دەرگەی بۆ کردیتمەوە

who, like myself, had felt underrepresented.

ئیمێڵ و نامەی زۆرم لەلایەن ژنانی .جیهانەوە بەدەست گەیشتوە

And although I didn't capture the crown,

پێم دەڵێن کە من سرووشم پێداون .بە ڕاستی مانەوەم لەگەڵ خۆم

that experience opened so many doors for me.

I was receiving emails and messages from women all over the world,

".بەردەوامبون لە وانەی "پێشتریش

telling me that I've inspired them by simply staying true to myself.

لە لایەن ئایکۆنی مۆدێرن کارینا ڕۆیتفیڵد بانگێشت کرام بۆ نیویۆڕك

.بۆ پێشکەشکردنی یەکەم سەروتارم

The other "firsts" kept coming.

ئەوە دەوروبەری ئەو کاتە بوو کە ،بومە یەکەم کچە مۆدێلی باڵاپۆش

I was invited to New York City by fashion icon Carine Roitfeld

،و لەساڵی یەکەمم

.بەرگی نۆ گۆڤاری جلوبەرگم ڕازاندبووەوە

to shoot my very first editorial.

It was around this time that I became the first hijab-wearing model,

.ئەوە ئەو گەردەلولە بوو، به‌كورتی بڵێبن

and in my first year,

لەگەر هەموو ئەو سەرکەوتنە

I graced the covers of nine fashion magazines.

یه‌ك شت هه‌بوو بە نەگۆڕی مابۆوە

ئەو بیرۆکەی کە دەتوانێ من ،بگەڕێنێتەوە ئێرە کاکومە

It was a whirlwind, to say the least.

But with all the overnight success,

.ئەو شوێنەی پێی دەڵێم ماڵ

there was one thing that remained constant --

چەند مانگێك پێش ئێستە، هەندێک شتی .باوەڕپێنەکراو بەسەرمدا ڕویاندا

the thought that this could be what brings me back here to Kakuma,

the place that I call home.

،لە نیویۆڕک بووم، لە یەکێک لە وێنەگرەکان

کاتێک چاوم بە ئەدوت ئەکیچ ی كچه‌ مۆدێلی ،باکوری سودان کەوت

And just a few months ago, something incredible happened to me.

و واڕویدابوو کە ئەویش لێرە .لە کاکومە لەدایک ببێ

I was in New York City, on a photo shoot,

ئەو ئەزموونە خۆی لە .خۆیدا پێناسەیەکە بۆ هیوا

when I met South Sudanese model Adut Akech,

who also happened to be born right here in Kakuma.

:مەبەستم، تەنها بیهێنە پێش چاوت

دوو کچ کە لە هەمان کەمپی ،پەنابەران لەدایک بوبێتن

That experience in itself is the definition of hope.

و بۆ یەکەم جار لە بەرگی "جلوبەرگی تازە"ی .به‌ریتانی بەیەک گه‌نیشتنه‌وه‌

I mean, just imagine:

two girls born in the same refugee camp,

(چەپڵە و دڵخۆشی)

reunited for the first time on the cover of British "Vogue."

و خۆشیەکی زۆرم پێ بەخشرا لە ،هاوبەشیکردنم لەگەڵ یونسێف

(Applause and cheering)

بەیەکەم ئیش دادەندرێ کە بۆ ،پێویستیەکانی منداڵ بکرێت

I was given the distinct pleasure of partnering up with UNICEF,

دەمەوێ بەبیرتان بینمەوە

،کە منداڵی ئێرەش لەوانەیە پەنابەربن

knowing firsthand the work that they do for children in need.

.ئەوان منداڵن

شایەنی هەمو هەلێکن بۆ گەشانەوەو هیواو خەونەکانیان

And I want you to remember

that although the children here may be refugees,

.و سەرکەوتنیان

they are children.

They deserve every opportunity to flourish, to hope, to dream --

چیرۆکەکەی من لێرەوە دەستی پێکرد ،لە کەمپی پەنابەرانی کاکومە

.شوێنێک لە هیوا

to be successful.

My story began right here in Kakuma refugee camp,
