Five years ago, I stood on the TED stage, and I spoke about my work.

But one year later,

I had a terrible accident as I left a pub one dark night with friends,

As we followed the path through a forest, I suddenly felt a massive thud,

then a second thud,

and I fell to the ground.

I had no idea what had hit me.

I later found out that when the gate was opened on a garden,

a wild stag stampeded along the path and ran straight into me.

و لە بڕبڕەی پشتم چەقی و ملم شکا.

باشترین ھاوڕێم منی لەسەر زەوی دۆزییەوە،

Its antler penetrated my trachea and my esophagus

بەھۆی ئەو کونەی ملمەوە بە گریانەوە داوای یارمەتیم دەکرد.

and stopped at my spinal cord and fractured my neck.

و چاومان داخست و هەر چەندە من نەمدەتوانی قسە بکەم، بەڵام

ئەو توانی لەوە تێبگات بیر لە چی دەکەمەوە.

My best friend found me lying on the floor,

پێی ووتم "تەنھا ھەناسە بدە".

gurgling for help through a hole in my neck.

And we locked eyes, and although I couldn't speak,

کاتێک، تەنها بیرم لە ھەناسەم دەکردەوە، ھەستم بە ئارامیەکی زۆر دەکرد.

she could understand what I was thinking.

بەڵام دڵنیا بووم کە بەرەو مردن دەچم.

And she told me, "Just breathe."

ھەرچۆنێک بێت، بەمە ڕازی بووم.

And so, whilst focusing on my breath, I had a strong sense of calmness,

چونکە هەمیشە ھەوڵم داوە لە ژیانمدا بتوانم باشترینەکان بکەم.

چێژم لە ھەناسەدان بۆ ساتێکی زياتر.

but I was certain that I was going to die.

Somehow, I was content with this,

because I've always tried to do my best in life whenever I can.

کاتێک ئۆتۆمبێلی فریاکەوتن گەیشت، ھێشتا بە ئەگا بووم،

So I just continued to enjoy each breath as one more moment --

لەبەرئەوەی زانام، هەموو شتێکم سەبارەت بە گەشتەکە بۆ نموونە:

دەنگی ڕێگەکە، دووبارە بوونەوەی ڕووناکی شەقامەکە.

one breath in and one breath out.

An ambulance came, I was still fully conscious,

and I analyzed everything on the journey, because I'm a scientist:

بیرم کردەوە، "لەوانەیە لەم کارەساتە ڕزگارم بێت."

دواتر لە هۆش خۆم چووم.

the sound of the tires on the road, the frequency of the street lights

لە نەخۆشخانەیەکی ناوخۆیی خەوێنرام دواتر بۆ گڵاسگۆ گواسترامەوە، دوای ئەوەی کەوتمە

and eventually, the city street lights.

And I thought, "Maybe I will survive."

حاڵەتی بێهۆشبوونەوە قورگیان بۆ دوریمەوە.

And then I passed out.

I was stabilized at a local hospital and then airlifted to Glasgow,

لەوکاتەی بێهۆشبووم، چەندەھا جار جیهانی سەیرم دەهاتە بەرچاو.

وەک تێکەڵەیەکی شێتانە بوو لە نێوان"ژیان" و"مردن."

where they reconstructed my throat and put me in a coma.

And while I was in the coma, I had many alternate realities.

It was like a crazy mix of "Westworld" and "Black Mirror."

But that's a whole other story.

My local TV station reported live from outside the hospital

of a Cambridge scientist who was in a coma,

and they didn't know if she would live or die or walk or talk.

ئەوە یەکەمین دیاری بوو.

دواتر دیاری بیرکردنەوە و جوڵە کردن،

And a week later, I woke up from that coma.

و خواردن و خواردنەوە بۆ بە دەست هێنا.

And that was the first gift.

ئەمە سێ مانگ و نیوی خایاند.

Then I had the gift to think, the gift to move,

بەڵام لێرە یەک شت ھەبوو کە ھەرگیز لە یادم ناچێت ،

the gift to breathe

کە بابەتی تایبەت و کەسییە.

and the gift to eat and to drink.

ڕۆژنامەکان چیرۆکی پەیوەندیدار بە جێندەرەم نوسیبوو.

That took three and a half months.

سەیرکەن--من ڕەگەزم گۆڕاوە، ئەوەش کێشەیەکی گەورە نییە.

But there was one thing that I never got back, though,

and that was my privacy.

بۆ نمونە، گۆڕینی ڕەنگی قژ یان قەبارەی پێڵاوەکەم زیاتر چێژبەخشترین.

The tabloid press made the story about gender.

کاتێک دواجار لێرە قسەم کرد

Look -- I'm transgender, it's not that big a deal.

Like, my hair color or my shoe size is way more interesting.

(چەپڵەڕێزان)

لە تێد، سەبارەت بەم شتە قسەم نەکرد، چونکە چیرۆکێکی دووبارەیە.

When I last spoke here --

ڕۆژنامەیەکی سکۆتڵەندی بەم سەردێڕە دەستی پێ کرد:

When I last spoke here --

"ڕەگەزی زانایەک لە لایەن نێرینەی ئاسکێکەوە دەگۆڕدرێت"

at TED, I didn't talk about it, because it's boring.

پێنچ کەسی دیکەش ھەمان شتیان کرد.

And one Scottish newspaper ran with the headline:

بۆ ساتێک زۆر توڕە بووم.

بەڵام دواتر ھێمن بوومەوە.

"Sex Swap Scientist Gored by Stag."

وئەوەی بیرم لێ دەکردەوە، ئافرەتێکی هەڵەیان هەڵبژاردبوو".

And five others did similar things.

و ئەوان نازانن چییان بەسەر دەهێنم."

And for a minute, I was angry.

(پێکەنین)

But then I found my calm place.

من نینجایەکی میھرەبانم.

And what ran through my head was, "They've crossed the wrong woman,

لەڕاستیدا نازانم نینجا چی دەکات،

بەڵام بۆ من، ئەوان بەناو سێبەردا دەڕۆن، بەناو زێرابەکان دا دەخشێن،

and they're not going to know what's hit them."

لە سەربانەکان باز دەدەن،

(Laughter)

I'm a kindness ninja.

پێش ئەوەی بزانیت، لە پشتتەوەتن.

بە کۆمەڵە سەربازێکەوە دەرناکەون و گلەیی ناکەن،

I don't really know what a ninja does,

but to me, they slip through the shadows, crawl through the sewers,

تەنھا تیشک دەخەنە سەر پلانەکان.

کاتێک لە ناو جێگەی نەخۆشخانە ڕاکشابووم،

skip across the rooftops,

and before you know it, they're behind you.

They don't turn up with an army or complain,

and they're laser-focused on a plan.

So when I lay in my hospital bed,

I thought of my plan to help reduce the chances

چییان بە یەک ملیۆن کەس گوت، من بە ١٠ملیۆن کەس دەڵێم.

of them doing this to somebody else,

by using the system as is, and paying the price of sacrificing my privacy.

چونکە کاتێک تۆ توڕە دەبیت، خەڵکی بەرگری لە خۆیان دەکەن.

بۆیە هێڕشم نەکردە سەریان،

What they told one million people, I will tell 10 million people.

و ئەوانیش بەرگری لە خۆیان نەکرد.

چەند نامەیەکی جوان و هێمنکەرەوە بۆ ڕۆژنامەکانی سەن و فۆکس نیوسی

Because when you're angry, people defend themselves.

بەڕیتانی نووسی،

So I didn't attack them,

and they were defenseless.

و سوپاسی ئەو ڕێگە چارە گونجاوەی منیان کرد.

I wrote kind and calm letters to these newspapers.

داوای پاشگەزبوونەوە، نە داوای لێبوردن نە پارەم نەکرد،

And The Sun newspaper, the kind of "Fox News" of the UK,

بەڵکو تەنها ویستم پێیان ڕابگەیەنم پێشێلی یاساکانیان کردووە،

thanked me for my "reasoned approach."

ھەروەھا ئەوەی کردیان تەنها ھەڵە بوو.

I asked for no apology, no retraction, no money,

لەم گەشتەدا، تێگەیشتم ئەوان کێن،

just an acknowledgment that they broke their own rules,

و ئەوانیش بۆیان دەرکەوت من کێم،

and what they did was just wrong.

و ئێمە بەڕاستی بووین بە ھاوڕێ .

تا گەیشتە ئەو وادەیەی لەگەڵ فیلپای زە سەن چەند گڵاسێک مەشرووب پێکەوە بخۆینەوە.

And on this journey, I started to learn who they are,

and they began to learn who I am.

دوای سێ مانگ، ئەوان ھەموویان ڕازی بوون،

And we actually became friends.

و لێدوانەکە لە ھەینیدا بڵاوکرایەوە،

I've even had a few glasses of wine with Philippa from The Sun since then.

و ئەوە کۆتاییەکەی بوو.

دواتر ئەوان بيريان كردەوە.

لە شەممەدا، بوومە سەردێری ھەواڵەکانی ئێوارە،

And after three months, they all agreed,

and the statements were published on a Friday,

بەسەردێڕی"شەش ڕۆژنامەی جیھانی دانیان بە ھەڵەی خۆیاندا نا"

and that was the end of that.

Or so they thought.

و پێشکەشکارەکە پێی گوتم،

On the Saturday, I went on the evening news,

with the headline "Six National Newspapers Admit They Were Wrong."

تا چیرۆکەکان ورژێنەر بکەین؟"

منیش وتم، "پاڵ کەوتبووم لە دارستانەکە، لە لایەن ئاسکێکەوە بریندار کرام.

And the anchor said to me,

"But don't you think it's our job as journalists

ئایا ئەمە ورژێنەر نییە؟"

to sensationalize a story?"

(پێکەنین)

And I said, "I was laying on a forest floor, gored by a stag.

و ئێستاش من سەردێڕەکان دەنووسم،

لە هەموویان جوانتر،

ئاسکەکە خۆی بە قورگمەوە ئاڵاندبوو، ڕۆژنامەکانیش لە تایبەتمەندیەکانم ئاڵابوون.

Is that not sensational enough?"

(Laughter)

And I was now writing the headlines.

لەم ڕۆژەدا پڕ خوێنەرترین بابەتی بی بی سی بوو.

My favorite one was,

منیش پێم خۆش بوو.

"The stag trampled on my throat, and the press trampled on my privacy."

لە کۆتایی ھەفتەکەم لە میدییادا،

دەستم بە بەکارھێنانی دەنگ و سەکۆی نوێی خۆم کرد.

It was the most read piece of BBC News online that day.

بۆ پەخش کردنی پەیامی خۆشەویستی و میھرەبانی .

And I was kind of having fun.

و کاتێک خولەکێک توڕە دەبووم و ڕقم بەرامبەر

And by the end of my week of media,

I started to use my newfound voice and platform

ئەو ڕۆژنامە و ڕۆژنامەنوسانە هەڵدەستا،

دەبوو بیرتەسکی ناخی خۆمیان بۆ پێناسە بکەم.

to spread a message of love and kindness.

And when I had the minute of anger and hatred

و پێویست بوو لەگەڵیان کۆببمەوە و قسەیان لەگەڵ بکەم

towards those press and journalists,

بەبێ ڕقی پێشوەختە.

I had to identify my inner bigotry towards them.

دەبوایە وام لە خۆم بکردبایە لێیان تێبگەم،

و لە بەرامبەردا، ئەوانیش لێم تێبگەن.

And I had to meet and speak with these people

شەش مانگی دواتر، داوایان لێکردم بەشداری لیژنەیەک بکەم

without judgment.

I had to let myself understand them,

بۆ ڕێکخستنی کاری ڕۆژنامەگەری.

and in return, they began to understand me.

و ساڵی چەند جارێک، قومێ چایی و پسکیت دەخۆم

Well, six months later, they asked me to join the committee

لەسەر خواستی سەرنوسەرى دەیلی مەیل پۆڵ داکرە، كە پێی دەگوتم،

that regulates the press.

"کەیت، مانگەکانی پێشووت چۆن بوو؟"

And a few times a year, I sip tea and dip biscuits

و ڕێزیان دەگرم.

with the likes of Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre, who says to me,

و ئێستا یەکێکم لە سێ ئەندامە سەرەکییەکە

کە جێگەی خۆم ھەیە

"So, Kate, how have your last few months been?"

لەبەر ئەوە نا کە جیاوازم،

لەبەرئەوەیە کە، وەک ھەر یەکێک لەوان دەنگم گوێگری هەیە.

And I respect them.

And I'm now one of three members of the public

جێگەی گاڵتەجاریە

who has a seat at the table --

لە ئێستا بە دواوە، داوا دەکەم کە چاو بە ڕۆژنامە چاپکراوەکان بخشێنن

not because I'm different,

but because my voice counts, just like anybody else.

ئەم بازرگانییە شکستخواردووە

And the irony is,

every now and again, I'm asked to visit those printing presses

of this declining industry,

because some people think

کەواتە ئاگەداری بیر تەسکی ناخت بە،

that the technology I spoke about here, last time at TED, my interactive print,

دوژمنەکانت بکە بە هاوڕێی خۆت.

might actually help save them.
