The press trampled on my privacy. Here's how I took back my story | Kate Stone

Five years ago, I stood on the TED stage, and I spoke about my work.

But one year later,

I had a terrible accident as I left a pub one dark night with friends,

As we followed the path through a forest, I suddenly felt a massive thud,

then a second thud,

متبوعاً بارتطامٍ آخر،

and I fell to the ground.

وبعدها سقطتُ على الأرض.

I had no idea what had hit me.

لم أدرِ ما أصابني في وقتها.

I later found out that when the gate was opened on a garden,

لقد عرفت لاحقا أنّه بعدما فُتِحَت بوّابة الحديقة،

a wild stag stampeded along the path and ran straight into me.

اندفعَ ظبيٌ برّيٌ في الطريق واصطدم بي.

Its antler penetrated my trachea and my esophagus

واخترقَ قرنُهُ قصبتي الهوائيّة والمَرِيء

and stopped at my spinal cord and fractured my neck.

وتوقّفَ عند نخاعي الشوكيّ، وكسرَ رقبتي.

My best friend found me lying on the floor,

صديقتي المقرّبة وجدتني ملقاةً على الأرض،

gurgling for help through a hole in my neck.

مغرغرةً طلباً للمساعدة بواسطة ثقبٍ في رقبتي.

And we locked eyes, and although I couldn't speak,

عندها تلاقت أعيُننا، ومع أنّني لم أستطعِ الكلام،

she could understand what I was thinking.

إلّا أنّها قد فهمت ما كنتُ أفكّر فيه.

And she told me, "Just breathe."

قالت لي: "تنفّسي وحسب"

And so, whilst focusing on my breath, I had a strong sense of calmness,

وعندما كنت أركّز على التنفّس، شعرتُ بالطمأنينة.

but I was certain that I was going to die.

ولكنّي كنت متأكدةً أنّني سأموت.

Somehow, I was content with this,

بطريقةٍ ما، كنت راضيةً حول ما حصل،

because I've always tried to do my best in life whenever I can.

لأني دائماً ما فعلت أفضل ما عندي في الحياة بقدرِ استطاعتي.

So I just continued to enjoy each breath as one more moment --

لذلكَ استمرّيتُ بالاستمتاع بكلّ نفس،

one breath in and one breath out.

An ambulance came, I was still fully conscious,

كنت مستيقظةً عندما جاءت سيّارة الإسعاف،

and I analyzed everything on the journey, because I'm a scientist:

ولأنّني عالمة، أيقنتُ كلّ شيءٍ في الطريق:

the sound of the tires on the road, the frequency of the street lights

أصوات عجلات السيارات، وميضُ أعمدة الإنارة،

and eventually, the city street lights.

وفي النهاية، أضواءُ الطرقاتِ في المدينة

And I thought, "Maybe I will survive."

فقلتُ لنفسي: "ربّما سأنجو"

And then I passed out.

وبعدها فقدتُ الوعي.

I was stabilized at a local hospital and then airlifted to Glasgow,

استقرّت حالتي في مشفىً محلّي، وبعدها نُقِلتُ جوّاً إلى مدينة "جلاسجو"

where they reconstructed my throat and put me in a coma.

وهناكَ أعادوا ترميم حلقي، ووضعوني في غيبوبة.

And while I was in the coma, I had many alternate realities.

It was like a crazy mix of "Westworld" and "Black Mirror."

But that's a whole other story.

My local TV station reported live from outside the hospital

بثّت محطّة التلفاز المحليّة مباشراً خارج المشفى،

of a Cambridge scientist who was in a coma,

عن عالمةٍ من جامعة "كامبريدج" والتي كانت في غيبوبة،

and they didn't know if she would live or die or walk or talk.

ولم يعلموا إذا كانت ستعيش أو تموت، أو تمشي وتتكلّم.

And a week later, I woke up from that coma.

بعدها بأسبوع، استقيظت من الغيبوبة،

And that was the first gift.

وكانت تلك النّعمة الأولى.

Then I had the gift to think, the gift to move,

بعدها شعرت بنعمة التّفكير، والقدرة على الحركة،

the gift to breathe

نعمة التنفّس،

and the gift to eat and to drink.

والأكل والشّرب.

That took three and a half months.

لقد استغرق ذلك ثلاثة أشهر ونصف.

But there was one thing that I never got back, though,

ولكن هناكَ شيءٌ واحدٌ لم أسترجعه أبداّ: خصوصيّتي.

and that was my privacy.

The tabloid press made the story about gender.

جعلت الصّحيفة الشعبيّة قصّتي تتمحور حول الجنس.

Look -- I'm transgender, it's not that big a deal.

حسناّ، أنا متحوّلةٌ جنسيّاً، وهذا ليس بالأمر الكبير.

Like, my hair color or my shoe size is way more interesting.

لون شعري، أو قياس حذائي أكثر جذباً للاهتمام.

When I last spoke here --

عندما تحدّثت اّخر مرّةٍ هنا

at TED, I didn't talk about it, because it's boring.

لم أتحدّت عن الأمر لأنّه ممل.

And one Scottish newspaper ran with the headline:

نشرت إحدى الصّحف من "سكوتلاندا" خبراً بعنوان:

"Sex Swap Scientist Gored by Stag."

"عالمةٌ متحوّلة جنسيّاً، نطحت من قبل ظبي"

And five others did similar things.

وخمس صحفٍ أخرى نشرت أخباراً مماثلة.

And for a minute, I was angry.

ولدقيقةٍ كنت غاضبة،

But then I found my calm place.

لكن بعدها وجدت سَكِينتي.

And what ran through my head was, "They've crossed the wrong woman,

وما كنت أفكر فيه هو: "لقد عبثوا مع المرأة الخطأ،

and they're not going to know what's hit them."

ولن يعرفوا ما سيصيبهم"

I'm a kindness ninja.

أنا نينجا لطيفة.

I don't really know what a ninja does,

لا أعلم حقّاُ ما يفعله النينجا،

ولكن أعتقد أنهم يتسلّلون في الظلال، ويزحفون في المجاري

but to me, they slip through the shadows, crawl through the sewers,

skip across the rooftops,

ويقفزون على السّطوح،

and before you know it, they're behind you.

وقبل أن تدرك الأمر، تجدهم وراءك.

They don't turn up with an army or complain,

لا يواجهونك بجيشٍ ولا يشكون، وهم شديدو التركيز على خطّتهم.

and they're laser-focused on a plan.

So when I lay in my hospital bed,

لذلك عندما كنت مستلقيةً في فِراش المشفى،

I thought of my plan to help reduce the chances

فكّرت بخّطةٍ لتخفيف احتمال تكرارهم نفس الأمر مع شخصٍ اّخر

of them doing this to somebody else,

by using the system as is, and paying the price of sacrificing my privacy.

من خلال ردّ ما فعلوه بنفس الطريقة، مع دفع الثّمن الذي هو التضحية بخصوصيّتي.

What they told one million people, I will tell 10 million people.

لقد نشروا الخبر لمليون شخص، وسأقوم بنشره بين 10 ملايين شخص.

Because when you're angry, people defend themselves.

فنحن ندافع عن أنفسنا عندما نكون غاضبين،

So I didn't attack them,

لذلك لم أهاجم الصّحف عندما كانوا عُزّل.

and they were defenseless.

I wrote kind and calm letters to these newspapers.

كتبت رسائل مسالمةً لهذه الصّحف،

And The Sun newspaper, the kind of "Fox News" of the UK,

وجريدة "الشمس"، هذه التي بمثابة "فوكس نيوز" في المملكة المتّحدة،

thanked me for my "reasoned approach."

شكرتني على "أسلوبي العقلاني" في هذه الشكوى

I asked for no apology, no retraction, no money,

ولم أطلب منهم الاعتذارعن الخبر ولا إزالته

ولا حتى مبلغاً من المال

just an acknowledgment that they broke their own rules,

فقط اعترافاً بأنّهم خرقوا قوانينهم

and what they did was just wrong.

وأنّ ما فعلوه هو تصرّفٌ خاطئ.

وفي هذه المسيرة، بدأت بالتعرّف عليهم

And on this journey, I started to learn who they are,

and they began to learn who I am.

وبالمثلِ تعرّفوا عليّ.

And we actually became friends.

وفي الحقيقة أصبحنا أصدقاء

I've even had a few glasses of wine with Philippa from The Sun since then.

وحتى احتسيت بضع كؤوس نبيذ مع "فيليبا"، والذي يعمل مع جريدة "الشمس"

وبعد ثلاثة أشهر، اتّفقت الصّحف على الاعتراف بالخطأ

And after three months, they all agreed,

and the statements were published on a Friday,

ونُشرت أقوالهم يوم جمعة، وبذلك انتهى الأمر،

and that was the end of that.

أو هذا ما ظنّوه.

Or so they thought.

On the Saturday, I went on the evening news,

يوم السّبت، ذهبت لمقابلةٍ في برنامج "أخبار المساء"

with the headline "Six National Newspapers Admit They Were Wrong."

وكان العنوان: "ستُّ صحفٍ محلّية تعترف بخطئها"

And the anchor said to me,

سألني المذيع: "ألا تعتقدين أنّها وظيفتنا كصحفيّين، أن نجعل الخبر أكثر إثارة؟"

"But don't you think it's our job as journalists

to sensationalize a story?"

And I said, "I was laying on a forest floor, gored by a stag.

فأجبته: "لقد نطحني ظبيّ، وكنت متروكةً على الأرض في الغابة،

Is that not sensational enough?"

أليس هذا مثيراً كفاية؟"

(Laughter)

(ضحك)

And I was now writing the headlines.

والآن أنا أكتب العناوين

My favorite one was,

والعنوان المفضّل لدي كان:

"The stag trampled on my throat, and the press trampled on my privacy."

"الظبي سحق حلقي، والصحافةُ سحقت خصوصيّتي"

It was the most read piece of BBC News online that day.

وكان ذلك أكثر خبرٍ قُرِئ على موقع BBC ذلك اليوم

And I was kind of having fun.

وكان الأمر ممتعاً، نوعاً ما.

And by the end of my week of media,

وفي نهاية أسبوع الصّحف والإعلام،

I started to use my newfound voice and platform

بدأت استعمال صوتي ومنصّتي الجديدان

to spread a message of love and kindness.

لنشر رسالةِ حبٍّ ولطف.

And when I had the minute of anger and hatred

وعندما شعرت بالغضب والحقد تجاه الصّحافة والصّحفيّين،

towards those press and journalists,

I had to identify my inner bigotry towards them.

كان يجب أن أتعرّف على تعصّبي الأعمى تجاههم،

And I had to meet and speak with these people

وأن أقابلهم وأتكلّم معهم، من دون إصدار أحكامٍ مسبقة.

without judgment.

I had to let myself understand them,

كان عليّي أن أفهمهم،

and in return, they began to understand me.

حتى يفهموني، بالمقابل.

Well, six months later, they asked me to join the committee

بعد ستّة أشهر، طلبوا منّي الإنضمام إلى اللجنة التي تنظّم الصّحافة

that regulates the press.

And a few times a year, I sip tea and dip biscuits

وبضع مرّاتٍ في السّنة، أشرب الشّاي وأغمّس البسكويت به

with the likes of Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre, who says to me,

مع أشخاصٍ مثل "بول ديكر"، محرّر صحيفة "ديلي ميل"، والذي يسألني:

"So, Kate, how have your last few months been?"

"حسناً، كايت، كيف هي أحوالك في الأشهر الماضية؟"

And I respect them.

أنا أحترمهم،

And I'm now one of three members of the public

وحاليّاً أنا واحدةٌ من الأعضاء الثلاث من الجمهور

who has a seat at the table --

والذين لديهم مقعدٌ على طاولة النقاشات

not because I'm different,

ليس لأنّني مختلفة،

but because my voice counts, just like anybody else.

بل لأنّ صوتي يحتسب، مثل الجميع.

And the irony is,

والسّخرية تكمن هنا:

every now and again, I'm asked to visit those printing presses

في كلّ حينٍ وآخر، يُطلب منّي أن أزور مطابع الصّحف،

of this declining industry,

because some people think

that the technology I spoke about here, last time at TED, my interactive print,

might actually help save them.
