We're here to celebrate compassion.

But compassion, from my vantage point,

As essential as it is across our traditions,

Karen Armstrong has told what I think is an iconic story

and, after the fact, the word "compassion"

Now compassion, when it enters the news,

too often comes in the form

Our cultural imagination about compassion

And so what I'd like to do this morning

we adopted tolerance

as the core civic virtue

with which we would approach that.

Now the word "tolerance," if you look at it in the dictionary,

connotes "allowing," "indulging"

and "enduring."

و كذا بالتحمُّل.

In the medical context that it comes from,

it is about testing the limits of thriving

in an unfavorable environment.

Tolerance is not really a lived virtue;

التسامح ليس بفضيلةٍ تُعاشُ على أرض الواقع؛

it's more of a cerebral ascent.

And it's too cerebral

و هوعقليٌ لدرجةِ أنه

to animate guts and hearts

and behavior

when the going gets rough.

And the going is pretty rough right now.

I think that without perhaps being able to name it,

we are collectively experiencing

Compassion is a worthy successor.

It is organic,

Compassion is a piece of vocabulary

To start simply,

I want to say that compassion is kind.

Now "kindness" might sound like a very mild word,

and it's prone to its own abundant cliche.

But kindness is an everyday byproduct

of all the great virtues.

And it is a most edifying form

of instant gratification.

Compassion is also curious.

Compassion cultivates and practices curiosity.

التعاطف والتراحم يسمح برعاية و ممارسة الفضول

I love a phrase that was offered me

أُحب جملةً أُهديت لي

by two young women

من طرف إمرأتين شابتين

who are interfaith innovators in Los Angeles,

هما من بين المجدِّدين في الأوساط متعدِّدة الأديان

Aziza Hasan and Malka Fenyvesi.

عزيزة حسن ومالكا فينيفيسي

They are working to create a new imagination

إنهما تعملان لبعثِ تخيُّلٍ جديدٍ

about shared life among young Jews and Muslims,

and as they do that, they cultivate what they call

Well that's going to be a breeding ground for compassion.

Compassion can be synonymous with empathy.

It can be joined with the harder work

of forgiveness and reconciliation,

but it can also express itself

in the simple act of presence.

It's linked to practical virtues

like generosity and hospitality

and just being there,

I think that compassion

also is often linked to beauty --

and by that I mean a willingness

to see beauty in the other,

not just what it is about them

that might need helping.

I love it that my Muslim conversation partners

often speak of beauty as a core moral value.

And in that light, for the religious,

compassion also brings us

to see beauty,

but I can show you what compassion looks like --

because it is visible.

When we see it, we recognize it

and it changes the way we think about what is doable,

It is so important

when we're communicating big ideas --

And compassion does seek physicality.

I first started to learn this most vividly

from Matthew Sanford.

And I don't imagine that you will realize this

when you look at this photograph of him,

but he's paraplegic.

He's been paralyzed from the waist down since he was 13,

Jean Vanier helped found the L'Arche communities,

which you can now find all over the world,

And compassion can also have those qualities.

But again and again, lived compassion

brings us back to the wisdom of tenderness.

Jean Vanier says

that his work,

like the work of other people --

his great, beloved, late friend Mother Teresa --

something happened

and the original light of the universe

was shattered into countless pieces.

It lodged as shards

inside every aspect of the Creation.

And that the highest human calling

is to look for this light, to point at it when we see it,

to gather it up,

and in so doing, to repair the world.

Now this might sound like a fanciful tale.

I think this is one of the most fascinating developments

is taking a virtue like compassion

Jesus, Buddha, St. Francis of Assisi,

Now invoking Einstein

حسناً، ذِكرُ آينشتاين

might not seem the best way to bring compassion down to earth

قد لايكون الأسلوبَ الأمثل لتبسيطِ التعاطف والتراحم

and make it seem accessible to all the rest of us,

و جعْلِه في متناولنا أجمعين،

but actually it is.

لكنّ الأمر كذلك في واقع الأمر.

I want to show you

أريد أن أريكم

the rest of this photograph,

ما تبَقّى من صورته الفوتوغرافية،

because this photograph

لأنّ هذه الصورة،

is analogous to what we do to the word "compassion" in our culture --

تُشبه ما نقوم به تجاه تعبير"التعاطف والتراحم" في ثقافتنا ــ

we clean it up

نَمسَحُه مسحاً

and we diminish its depths and its grounding

و نقلّل من أعماقه و تجذّره

in life, which is messy.

في الحياة، و هو أمرٌ حرِج/فوضوي .

So in this photograph

إذاً، في هذه الصورة

you see a mind looking out a window

ترون عقلاً ينظر من الشبّاك إلى الخارج

at what might be a cathedral -- it's not.

على ما قد يبدو كاثدرائيةً ــ الأمر ليس كذلك.

This is the full photograph,

and you see a middle-aged man wearing a leather jacket,

وترون فيها كهلاً يرتدي سترةً جلدية،

smoking a cigar.

يدخّن سيجاراً.

And by the look of that paunch,

و بالنّظر إلى ذلك البطن الناتئ،

he hasn't been doing enough yoga.

يمكن القول بأنّه لم يمارس اليوغا منذ فترة.

We put these two photographs side-by-side on our website,

and someone said, "When I look at the first photo,

فقال أحدهم " عندما أنظر إلى الصورة الأولى،

I ask myself, what was he thinking?

أسأل نفسي يما كان يفكّر؟

And when I look at the second, I ask,

و لمّا أنظر إلى الثانية، أتساءل

what kind of person was he? What kind of man is this?"

عن أيّ نوعٍ من الأشخاص كان هو؟ أيّ رجلٍ كان هذا؟

Well, he was complicated.

حسناً، لقد كان معقّداً.

He was incredibly compassionate

لقد كان بالغ التعاطف والتراحم

in some of his relationships

في بعضٍ من علاقاته

and terribly inadequate in others.

و لم يرقى تماماً إلى المستوى المنتظر في البعض الآخر

And it is much harder, often,

غالباً ما يكون أصعب

to be compassionate towards those closest to us,

أن نشعربأقرب النّاس إلينا و نتعاطف معهم،

which is another quality in the universe of compassion,

و هي سمةٌ أخرى يتميزّ بها عالم التعاطف والتراحم،

on its dark side,

في جانبه المظلم،

that also deserves our serious attention and illumination.

تستدعي أيضاً إهتماماً جاداً و توضيحاً.

Gandhi, too, was a real flawed human being.

لقد كان غاندي فعلاً إنساناً به عيوباً.

So was Martin Luther King, Jr. So was Dorothy Day.

كذلك كان مارتن لوثر كينغ جونيَر(الأصغر). كذلك كانت دوروثي داي.

So was Mother Teresa.

كذلك كانت الأم تيريزا.

So are we all.

كذلك نحن كلّنا.

And I want to say

أريد أن أقول

that it is a liberating thing

أنّه مما يرفع القيود

to realize that that is no obstacle to compassion --

الإدراك بأن ذلك ليس بعائقٍ تجاه التعاطف والتراحم ــ

following on what Fred Luskin says --

متابِعةً لما قاله فْريد لاسكِن ــ

that these flaws just make us human.

بأنّ تلك العيوب تجعل منا بشراً.

Our culture is obsessed with perfection

ثقافتنا مغمورةٌ بهاجس الكمال

and with hiding problems.

و بإخفاء المشكلات.

But what a liberating thing to realize

لَكم يبعث على التفاؤل/(التحرّر من القيود) أن ندرك

that our problems, in fact,

بأنّ مشاكلنا، في واقع الأمر،

are probably our richest sources

ربّما تكون أغزر منابعنا

for rising to this ultimate virtue of compassion,

للرّقي نحو هذه الفضيلة السامية المتمثلة في التعاطف والتراحم،

towards bringing compassion

نحو استحضار التعاطف والتراحم،

towards the suffering and joys of others.

نحو معاناة و مسرّات الأخرين.

Rachel Naomi Remen is a better doctor

ريْتشل نعّومي ريمن هي الآن طبيبة أحسن (مما كانت عليه)

because of her life-long struggle with Crohn's disease.

بسبب معركتها ضدّ مرض كرون الممتدّة على مدى الحياة،

Einstein became a humanitarian,

أصبح آينشتاين مهتمّاً بالعمل الإنساني،

not because of his exquisite knowledge

لا بسبب معرفته الرّفيعة

of space and time and matter,

بالفضاء و الوقت و المادة،

but because he was a Jew as Germany grew fascist.

بل لكونه يهودياً في وقتٍ طغت فيه الفاشية على ألمانيا.

And Karen Armstrong, I think you would also say

وكارين أرمسترونغ، أعتقد أنّكِ ستقولين أيضاً

that it was some of your very wounding experiences

بأنّ واحدةً من التجارب التي تسبّبت في جرح مشاعركِ

in a religious life that,

في حياتك الدّينية التي،

with a zigzag,

من خلال شيئٍ من التعرّجات،

have led to the Charter for Compassion.

هي التي قادت إلى "ميثاق التعاطف والتراحم".

Compassion can't be reduced to sainthood

لا يمكن للتعاطف والتراحم أن يتلخصّ في القداسة

any more than it can be reduced to pity.

تماماً كما لا ينبغي له أن يتلخّص في الشفقة.

So I want to propose

إذاً أودّ أن أقترح

a final definition of compassion --

تعريفاّ نهائيّاً للتعاطف والتراحم ــ

this is Einstein with Paul Robeson by the way --

هذا آينشتاين برفقة بول روبسَن بالمناسبة ــ

and that would be for us

و هذا قد يدعونا

to call compassion a spiritual technology.

لتسمية التعاطف والتراحم بـتكنولوجيا روحية.

Now our traditions contain

حسناً، يوجد في تقاليدنا

vast wisdom about this,

حِكمٌ واسعة بهذا الخصوص،

and we need them to mine it for us now.

و نحن بحاجةٍ إليها الآن لاستخراج تلك الـتكنولوجيا الروحية.

But compassion is also equally at home

لكن التعاطف والتراحم موجودٌ أيضاً في البيوت

in the secular as in the religious.

في أمور الدّنيا كما في أمور الدّين.

So I will paraphrase Einstein in closing

إذاً في الختام سأعيد صياغة كلامٍ لآينشتاين

and say that humanity,

فأقول بأنّ الإنسانية،

the future of humanity,

مستقبل الإنسانية،

needs this technology

بحاجةٍ لهذه التكنولوجيا

as much as it needs all the others

تماماً كما أنّهما بحاجةٍ إلى كلّ تلك (التكنولوجيا) التي

that have now connected us

سمحت بربطنا الآن

and set before us

وأتاحت لنا

the terrifying and wondrous possibility

إمكانيةً مدهشةً ورائعةً

of actually becoming one human race.

لنصير جنسأ /عرقاً واحداً في واقع الأمر.
