People often think the word "doubt" spelling is a little crazy

نابەجێیانە "doubt" خەڵک پییان وایە شێوازی نووسینی

because of the letter "b".

"b"بەهۆی پیتی .

Since it doesn't spell a sound,

لەو کاتەدا ئەو دەنگە ناخوێندرێتەوە،

most folks can't figure out what it's doing there.

زۆربەی خەڵکی نازانن هۆکارەکەی چییە.

But in spite of what most of us learn in school,

بەڵام لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا ئێمە چ فێر بوون لە قوتابخانە،

sound is <i>never</i> the most important aspect

دەنگ هەرگیز گرینگترین لایەن نەبووە

of spelling an English word.

لە خوێندنەوەیی ووشەی ئینگلیزیدا.

A word's meaning and history need to come first.

مانای وشەیەک سەرەتا لە پێشەوە مێژووەکەی پێویستە .

To doubt means to question,

وەکو کار بەمانەی doubt

to waver,

شڵەژان ،

to hesitate.

و دوودلی دێت،

As a noun, it means uncertainty or confusion.

وەکو ناوێک، ئەوە بە مانەی دوودڵ و سەرلێشێواو دێت.

The present-day English word "doubt"

"doubt" ووشەی ئێستای ئینگلیزی

started as a Latin word, "dubitare".

.هاتووە"dubitare" لە ووشەی لاتینی ،

It first moved from Latin into French

ئەوە سەرەتا لە لاتینیەوە بۆتە فەڕەنسی

where it lost both its "buh" sound and its letter "b".

ونکردووە"buh" کاتێک ئەو دەنگی ."b" لەگەڵ پیتی

And then it came into English in the 13th century.

About 100 years later,

scribes who wrote English but also knew Latin,

started to reinsert the "b" into the word's spelling,

even though no one pronounced it that way.

But why would they do this?

بەڵام بۆ ئەوان ئەوەیان کرد؟

Why would anyone in their right mind

بۆ هەرکەسێک دەبێت بە ئاگا بێت

reinsert a silent letter into a spelling?

لە دانانەوەی پیتێکی بێ دەنگ لە نوسیندا ؟

Well, because they knew Latin,

باشە، لەبەر ئەوەی ئەوان زمانی لاتینیان زانیوە،

the scribes understood that the root of "doubt" had a "b" in it.

نوسەرەکان لەوە تێگەیشتون لە بنچینەیدا هەبووە "b" پیتی "doubt"

Over time, even as fewer literate people knew Latin,

بەدرێژای کات، هەر چەندە خەلکێکی خوێنەری کەم زمانی لاتینیان دەزانی،

the "b" was kept because it marked important,

پارێزرا لەبەر ئەوەی "b"پیتی دیاریکردنی گرینگ بوو،

meaningful connections to other related words,

like "dubious" and "indubitalbly,"

which were subsequently borrowed into English

from the same Latin root, "dubitare".

Understanding these historical connections

تێگەیشتن لەو پێ کبەستی مێژوویانە

not only helped us to spell "doubt,"

تەنها یارمەتیمان نادات بۆ نوسینی ،"doubt"

but also to understand the meaning

بەڵام هەروەها بۆ تێگەیشتنمان لە واتای

of these more sophisticated words.

زیاتری ئەو ووشە ئاڵۆزانە.

But the story doesn't end there.

بەڵام باسەکە لێرە کۆتایی نایەت .

If we look even deeper,

ئەگەرئێمە قوڵتر سەیر بکەین،

we can see beyond the shadow of a doubt,

ئێمە دەتوانین لە پاش ببنین،doubt

just how revealing that "b" can be.

There are only two base words in all of English

تەنها دوو ووشەی سەرەکی هەیە لە هەموو زمانی ئینگلیزی

that have the letters "d-o-u-b":

هەیە:"d-o-u-b"کە پیتەکانی

one is doubt,

،doubt یەکێکیان

and the other is double.

.doubleو ئەوەی تر

We can build lots of other words

ئێمە دەتوانین ووشەی زیاتر دروست بکەین

on each of these bases,

لەسەرهەریەک لەو بنچینانە

(گومان لێکراو) doubtful وەکو

like doubtful

and doubtless,

(گومان لێنەکراو)،doubtless

or doublet,

(هاوچەشن) doublet یان

and redouble,

(چەنجارەی دەکات)redouble و

and doubloon.

ئەوە ڕوون دەبێت ئەگەر ئێمە سەیری مێژووەکانیان بکەین،

It turns out that if we look into their history,

ئێمە دەتوانین ئەوانە ببنین کە داڕێژراون

we can see that they both derive

from the same Latin forms.

لە هەمان پێکهاتنی زمانی لاتین.

The meaning of double,

،"double" مانای ووشەی

two,

دوو ،

is reflected in a deep understanding of doubt.

تێگەیشتنی قوڵی پێچەوانەی هەیە .doubt ووشەی

See, when we doubt,

ببینە ، کاتێک ئێمە بەگومانین

when we hesitate,

کاتێک ئێمە دوودڵین.

we second guess ourselves.

ئێمە دووجار بیری لێدەکەینەوە.

When we have doubts about something,

کاتێک ئێمە دوودڵین دەربارەی شتێک،

when we have questions or confusion,

کاتێک ئێمە پرسیارمان هەیە یان سەرلێشێواوین،

we are of two minds.

ئێمە دوو بیرکردنەوەمان هەیە.

Historically, before English began

لەڕووی مێژووییەوە، پێش ئەوەی زمانی ئینگلیزی دەست پێبکات

to borrow words from French,

بۆهێنانی ووشەکان لە فەڕەنسیەوە،

it already had a word for doubt.

.doubt هەمیشە ووشەیەک هەبوو بۆ ووشەی

That Old English word was "tweogan,"

کە لەزمانی ئینگلیزی کۆن ووشەی هەبوو،"tweogan"

a word whose relationship to "two"

هەیە "two" ووشەیەکە کە پەیوەندی بە

is clear in its spelling as well.

خوێندنەوەی ڕوونە بەباشی.

So the next time you are in doubt

هەروەها دواتر تۆ دوودڵ دەبیت

about why English spelling works the way it does,

دەربارەی بۆچی خوێندنەوەی زمانی ئینگلیزی بەو ڕێگایە کاردەکات،

take a second look.

دووجار بربکەوە.

What you find just might make you do a double-take.
