A shabby man named Estragon,

پیاوێکی شڕ بە ناوی ئێستراگۆن،

sits near a tree at dusk and struggles to remove his boot.

لە خۆرئاوابووندا لە نزیک دارێک دادەنیشێت و کێشەی هەیە لە داکەندنی پووتەکانیدا.

He’s soon joined by his friend Vladimir,

هەر زوو هاوڕێکەی دێت بۆلای کە ناوی "ڤلادمیر"ە

who reminds his anxious companion that

کە بیری هاوڕێ سەرلێشێواوەکەی دەخاتەوە کە

they must wait here for someone called Godot.

So begins a vexing cycle in which the two debate

when Godot will come, why they’re waiting,

باسی ئەوە دەکەن کە کەی گۆدۆ دێت و بۆچی ئەمان چاوەڕوانن،

and whether they’re even at the right tree.

From here, Waiting for Godot only gets stranger -

لێرەوە چاوەڕێ کردنی گۆدۆ تەنها سەیرتر دەبێت -

but it’s considered a play that changed

بەڵام ئەمە بە شانۆیک دادەنرێت کە

the face of modern drama.

شێوازی درامای مۆدێرنی گۆڕی.

Written by Samuel Beckett between 1949 and 1955,

لەلایەن "ساموێل بێکێت"ەوە نوسراوە لە نێوان ساڵانی ١٩٤٩ و ١٩٥٥،

it offers a simple but stirring question -

پرسیارێکی سادە بەڵام هەژێنەر دەخاتەڕوو -

what should the characters do?

ئاخۆ دەبێت کارەکتەرەکان چی بکەن؟

Estragon: Don’t let's do anything. It's safer.

ئێستراگۆن: با هیچ نەکەین. ئەوە سەلامەتترە.

Vladimir: Let’s wait and see what he says.

ڤلادمیر: با چاوەڕوانبین بزانین ئەو چی دەڵێت.

Estragon: Who?

ئێستراگۆن: کێ؟

Vladimir: Godot.

ڤلادمیر: گۆدۆ

Estragon: Good idea.

ئێستراگۆن: بیرۆکەیەکی چاکە.

Such cryptic dialogue and circular reasoning are

ئەم جۆرە گفتوگۆ نهێنیئامێز و بیرکردنەوە بازنەییانە

key features of the Theatre of the Absurd,

تایبەتمەندی سەرەکی "شانۆگەریی پوچگەرایی"ن،

a movement which emerged after the Second World War

and found artists struggling

to find meaning in devastation.

The absurdists deconstructed plot, character and language

While this may sound grim,

the absurd blends its hopelessness with humor.

This is reflected in Beckett’s unique approach

to genre in Waiting for Godot,

Tragically, the characters are locked in an

for an unknown figure to give them a sense of purpose,

but their only sense of purpose

comes from the act of waiting,

While they wait, they sink into boredom,

express religious dread and contemplate suicide.

But comically, there is a jagged humor to their predicament,

which comes across in their language and movements.

کە لە قسە و جوڵەکانیاندا دەردەکەوێت.

Their interactions are filled with bizarre wordplay,

گفتوگۆکانیان پڕە لە وشەی نامۆ،

repetition and double entendres,

دوبارەبوونەوە و فرەواتایی،

as well as physical clowning, singing and dancing,

هەروەها خۆ هەزەلیکردنی جەستەیی گۆرانی گووتن و سەما کردن

and frantically swapping their hats.

It’s often unclear whether the audience is supposed to

زۆربەی کات ڕون نییە کە ئایا بینەران دەبێت

laugh or cry - or whether Beckett saw

پێبکەنن یان بگرین - یان ئاخۆ "بێکێت" هیچ

any difference between the two.

جییاواز بووە ئەو دوو شتە بەلایەوە.

Born in Dublin, Beckett studied English,

French and Italian before moving to Paris,

He also cultivated a mysterious persona,

and refused to confirm or deny any speculations

about the meaning of his work.

This kept audiences guessing,

The lack of any clear meaning makes Godot

endlessly open to interpretation.

Critics have offered countless readings of the play,

resulting in a cycle of ambiguity and speculation

It's been read as an allegory of the Cold War,

bicker and banter, lose their train of thought,

and pick up right where they left off:

Vladimir: We could start all over again perhaps

ڤلادمیر: ڕەنگە بتوانین دووبارە دەست پێبکەینەوە

Estragon: That should be easy

ئێستراگۆن: ئەوە دەبێت ئاسان بێت

Vladimir: It’s the start that’s difficult

ڤلادمیر: سەرەتاکان سەختن

Estragon: You can start from anything

ئێستراگۆن: دەتوانیت لە هەرشتێکەوە دەست پێ بکەیت

Vladimir: Yes, but you have to decide.

ڤلادمیر: بەڵێ، بەڵام دەبێ بڕیار بدەیت.

Beckett reminds us that just like our daily lives,

بێکێت بیرمان دەخاتەوە کە هەروەک ژیانی ڕۆژانەمان،

the world onstage doesn’t always make sense.

جیهانی دەرەوە هەمیشە مەنتیقی نییە.

It can explore both reality and illusion,

دەکرێت هەم ڕاستی تێدابێت و هەم خەیاڵ،

the familiar and the strange.

ئاشنایی و نامۆیی.

And although a tidy narrative still appeals,

و هەرچەندە داڕشتنێکی ڕێکوپێک هێشتاش دڵخۆشکەرە،

the best theatre keeps us thinking – and waiting.
