Every year before the ancient Greeks sowed their seeds of grain,

هەموو ساڵێک پێش ئەوەی یۆنانییە کۆنەکان تۆی دانەوێڵەکانیان بچێنن،

they celebrated Demeter, the goddess of agriculture.

ئاهەنگی دێمیتەریان گێڕا، خواوەندی کشتوکاڵ.

On Earth, each morsel of food was sweet sustenance,

لەسەر زەوی، هەر ژەمە خواردنێک سەرچاوەی شیرینییە،

while in the land of the dead, it ensured a permanent stay.

لەکاتێکدا لە خاکی مردووەکان، دڵنیایی مانەوەی هەمیشەیی بوو.

Demeter tended to Earth’s fields with her beloved daughter, Persephone,

دێمیتەر چاودێری کێڵگەکانی زەوی دەکرد لەگەڵ کچە خۆشەویستەکەی، پێرسیفۆن،

who inherited her mother’s passions and grew into a bright young woman.

کە پەرۆشیەکانی دایکی بۆ مابۆوە و ببوو بە ئافرەتێکی گەنج.

But all the while, a shadowy figure watched from below.

بەڵام لەو هەموو کاتەدا، کەسایەتیەکی سێبەری لەخوارەوە سەیری دەکرد.

One day, Persephone was frolicking in a meadow

ڕۆژێک، پێرسیفۆن لە مێرگێک یاری دەکرد

with a freshwater nymph, Cyane.

لەگەڵ خواوەندی ئاوی، ساین.

As they admired a blooming narcissus flower,

هەروەک حەزیان بە گوڵی گەشاوەی نێرگز بوو،

they noticed it tremble in the ground.

سەرنجیان دا کە لە زەویدا دەلەرزێت.

Suddenly, the earth split, and a terrifying figure arose.

لەناکاو، زەوی دوو لەت بوو، و شێوەیەکی ترسناک بەدەرکەوت.

It was Hades, god of the dead and the underworld.

ئەوە هادێس بوو، خواوەندی مەرگ و ژێر زەوی.

He wrenched Persephone from Cyane, dragged her into his inky chariot,

and blasted back through the earth.

Cyane wept so hard she dissolved, becoming one with the river.

By the time Demeter arrived at the scene of the abduction,

لەکاتی گەیشتنی دێمیتەر لە دیمەنی فڕاندنەکە،

the crater in the meadow had closed— and Cyane and Persephone had vanished.

کونەکە لە مێرگەکە داخرابۆوە و ساین و پێرسیفۆن لەناوچووبوون.

Demeter sped to Mount Olympus for help.

دێمیتەر پەلەی کرد بۆ چیای ئۆلیمپەس بۆ یارمەتی.

Many of the gods had witnessed the scene.

زۆر لە خواوەندەکان شایەدحاڵی دیمەنەکە بوون.

And they knew about the deal that paved the way for it:

و ئەوان سەبارەت بە ڕێکەوتنەکە زانیویانە کە ڕێگەی بۆ خۆش کرد:

Zeus, Persephone’s father, had granted Hades her hand in marriage

زیۆس، باوکی پێرسیفۆن، ئەوی بەخشیبووە هادێس بۆ هاوسەرگیری

without her consent— or Demeter’s.

بەبێ ڕەزامەندی ئەو یان دێمیتەر.

But when faced with Demeter’s pleas, the other gods stayed silent,

بەڵام کاتێک ڕووبەڕووی ویستەکانی دێمیتەر بۆوە، خواوەندەکانی تر بێدەنگ بوون،

So, she searched alone.

بۆیە، ئەو بەتەنیا بەدواگەڕانی کرد.

In her grief and desperation, she neglected her usual tasks.

لە خەم و پەژارەیدا، ئەرکە ئاساییەکانی فەرامۆش کرد.

Crops withered, and a great famine plagued the Earth.

دانەوێڵەکان وشک بوون، قاتی و قوڕیەکی زۆر ڕووی لە زەوی کرد.

As mortals began to perish, the gods grew wary.

کە مۆرتاڵەکان دەستیان بە لەناوچوون کرد، خواوەندەکان بەئاگا هاتنەوە.

Who would worship them and offer tributes if the humans disappeared?

کێ ئەوان دەپەڕەستێت و ستایشیان دەکەن ئەگەر مرۆڤەکان نەمینێن؟

So, Zeus ordered Demeter to stop her crusade and returned to her duties.

زیۆس داوای لە دێمیتەر کرد ئەو جەنگەی بووەستێنێت و بگەڕێتەوە بۆ سەر ئەرکەکانی.

But she refused.

بەڵام ئەو ڕەتی کردەوە.

Deep below, across the frigid river Styx, and through the halls of the underworld,

لە قوڵایی خوارەوە، بە درێژایی ڕووباری زۆر ساردی ستیکس، و لەناو هۆڵەکانی جیهانی

Persephone was waging her own protest.

خوارەوە، پێرسیفۆن ناڕەزایی خۆی دەردەبڕی.

Hades expected her to serve as his wife and queen.

هادێس پێشبینی لێ دەکرد وەک ژنی و شاژنی خزمەت بکات.

But Persephone rebuffed the god’s advances and refused food.

بەڵام پێرسیفۆن پێشبینیەکانی خواوەندەکەی شەرمەزار کردوو و خواردنی رەت کردەووە.

As she longed for her mother’s company,

کاتێک بیری هاوڕێیەتی دایکی

her friends’ laughter, and the sun’s warmth,

پێکەنینی هاوڕێکانی، و گەرمی خۆری دەکرد،

Persephone grew colder and lonelier.

پێرسیفۆن ساردتر و تەنیاتر دەبوو.

And she was starving.

و ئەو برسیش بوو.

She hungered for satisfying grains, crisp vegetables and fresh fruit.

برسیبوو بۆ قایلکردنی دانەوێڵە، سەوزە وشککراوەکان و میوەی تازە.

Wandering the ghostly gardens,

سەرگەردان لەناو باخەکانی تارمایی،

she contemplated the pomegranates that hung heavily on their branches...

بیری لە هەنارەکان دەکردەووە کە سەختی بە لقەکانیان هەڵواسرابوون...

Meanwhile, Demeter continued her hunt.

لە هەمان کاتدا، دێمیتەر بەردەوام بوو لە گەڕانەکەی.

She appealed to the all-seeing sun god, Helios,

داوای لە خواوەندی خۆری هەموو بینراوەکان کرد، هیلیەس،

whose rays had long warmed her crops.

کە تیشکەکانی لەمێژە دانەوێڵەکانی ئەویان گەرم کردبوو.

Indeed, when Helios drew his golden chariot across the sky that fateful day,

کاتێک هیلەس گالیسکە زیڕینەکەی بە درێژایی ئاسمان ڕاکێشا ئەوڕۆژە چارەنووسازە.

he saw what happened— and he knew of the deal.

ئەو بینی چی ڕوویدا و ئاگاداری ڕێکەوتنەکە بوو.

Out of respect and sympathy for Demeter,

بەبێ ڕێز و هاوسۆزی بۆ دێمیتەر،

Helios told her of Hades’ demands, Zeus’ betrayal and Persephone’s abduction.

هیلیەس داواکانی هادێس، خیانەتەکەی زیۆس و دوورخستنەوەکەی پێرسیفۆنی پێ وت.

Furious and heartbroken, Demeter sped to Mount Olympus and confronted Zeus,

تووڕە و دڵشکاو، دێمیتەر چوو بۆ چیای ئۆلیمپەس و بەرەنگاری زیۆس بۆوە،

demanding their daughter’s return.

داوای گەڕاندنەوەی کچەکەیانی دەکرد.

But Zeus declined: in her ravenous hunger,

بەڵام زیۆس ڕەتی کردەووە: لە زۆری برسیەتییەکەی،

Persephone had eaten a few seeds from the pomegranate that grew in the underworld.

پێرسیفۆن هەندێک دەنکی هەناری خوارد کە لە جیهانی ژێرەوە گەورە ببوون.

Though a meager amount, it was enough to ensnare her in Hades forever.

هەرچەندە بڕێکی کەم، بەس بوو بۆ ئەوەی بکەوێتە داوی هادێس بۆ هەمیشە.

Demeter wouldn't accept this fate.

دێمیتەر ئەو چارەنووسە قبوڵ ناکات.

She swore that if she wasn’t reunited with Persephone,

سوێندی خوارد کە ئەگەر لەگەڵ پێرسیفۆن یەکی نەگرتایەتەوە،

the fields would never be fertile again,

کێڵگەکان هەرگیز دووباره بە بەرهەم نەدەبوونەوە،

and the distinction between the Earth and the underworld would soon dissolve.

و جیاوازی نێوان زەوی و جیهانی خوارەوە بەمزوانە نامێنێت.

So, they made a pact.

بۆیە، ئەوان ڕێکەوتنێکیان کرد.

For two thirds of every year, Persephone would return to the land of the living,

بۆ دوو لەسەر سێی هەموو ساڵێک، پێرسیفون دەگەڕێتەوە بۆ خاکی زیندووان،

But for the remainder, she would stay in the world of the dead.

بەڵام بۆ ئەوی تر، ئەو دەبێت لە جیهانی مردووان بمێنێتەوە.

When Persephone ascended to Earth, she and her mother rejoiced.

کاتێک پێرسیفۆن سەرکەووتەوە سەر زەوی، ئەو و دایکی بەیەک شادبوونەوە.

Together, they showered the fields with rain and nurtured them with sun.

بەیەکەوە، کێڵگەکانیان بە باران ئاودا و بە خۆر پەروەردەیان کردن.

For mortals, Persephone’s arrival came to herald the start of spring.

بۆ مۆڕتاڵەکان، گەڕانەوەی پێرسیفۆن هات بۆ ئاشکراکردنی سەرەتای بەهار.

But her descent always came too soon.

بەڵام دابەزینەکەی هەمیشە زوو دەهات.

Each time she returned to Hades, Demeter mourned,

هەر جارێک گەڕایەوە بۆ هادێس، دێمیتەر ماتەمینی گێڕا،

and the earth grew cold, dark, and unyielding,

و زەوی سارد بوو، تاریک، و بێهودە،

ushering in the winter months.

دەستپێکردنی مانگەکانی زستان.

Knowing Demeter couldn’t be roused from her grief,

زانینی ناتوانرێت دێمیتەر دووربخرێتەوە لە غەم و پەژارەکەی،

the humans stored their crops, stoked their fires,

مرۆڤەکان دانەوێڵەکانیان غەزن کرد، ئاگرەکانیان بەگوڕتر کرد،

and awaited Persephone’s safe return.

و چاوەڕوانی گەڕانەوەی سەلامەتی پێرسیفۆنیان دەکرد.

And so it was that her transit marked the gradual turning of the seasons

و کەواتە ئەوە گوزەری ئەوە گۆڕانی وردە وردەی وەرزەکانی دیاری کردووە

and the bittersweet compromise between life and death.

و سازانی تاڵ و شیرین لەنێوان ژیان و مەرگ.
