بۆچی هەست بە مووچوڕک دەکەیت کاتێک گوێمان لە "شکسپیر" دەبێت؟

Why do we cringe when we hear "Shakespeare?"

If you ask me, it's usually because of his words.

ئەگەر لەمن بپرسیت دەرێم لەبەر وشەکانییەتی.

All those thines and thous and therefores

ئەم هەموو وشەیەی بۆتۆ ئەمە و ئەو

and wherefore-art-thous can be more than a little annoying.

ئەو شێوازەی ڕەنگە زۆر زیاتر بن لە بێزارکردن بۆت.

But you have to wonder, why is he so popular?

بەڵام دەبێت بیربکەیتەوە، بۆچی هێندە بەناوبانگە؟

Why have his plays been made and remade more than any other playwright?

شانۆیەکانی پێشکەشدەکرێن و دووبارە دەکرێنەوە زیاتر لە هەر نووسەرێکی شانۆگەری؟

It's because of his words.

هەموویشی لەبەر وشەکانییەتی

Back in the late 1500s and early 1600s,

لە کۆتاییەکانی ساڵانی ١٥٠٠ـەتەکان و سەرەتای ١٦٠٠ـەکان،

that was the best tool that a person had,

ئەوە باشترین شت بۆ کە کەسێک بیکردبوایە.

and there was a lot to talk about.

شتی زۆری لەبارەوە دەگوترا.

However, most of it was pretty depressing.

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا، زۆربەیان فشارهێندەر بوون.

You know, with the Black Plague and all.

دەزانن، لەگەڵ پەتای مەرگی ڕەش و هەموو شتەکانی تر.

Shakespeare does use a lot of words.

شکسپیر وشەی زۆری بەکاردەهێنا.

One of his most impressive accomplishments is his use of insults.

یەکێک لە دەستکەوتە مەزنەکانی بەکارهێنانی سوکایەتیکردنە.

They would unify the entire audience;

دەتوانێت ئامادەبووان یەکبخان؛

and no matter where you sat, you could laugh at what was going on onstage.

گرنگ نییە لەکێ دانیشتوویت. دەتوانی بە ڕووداوەکانی سەر شانۆ پێبکەنیت.

Words, specifically dialogue in a drama setting,

وشەکان، بەتایبەتی گفتوگۆ درامییەکان،

are used for many different reasons:

بۆ چەندین مەبەستی جیاجیا بەکاردەهاتن:

to set the mood of the scene,

بۆ بەخشینی میزاج بە دیمەنەکە،

to give some more atmosphere to the setting,

هەروەها بۆ بەخشینی کەشێک بە شوێنەکە،

and to develop relationships between characters.

بۆ پەرەپێدانی پەیوەندی لەنێوان کارەکتەرەکان.

Insults do this in a very short and sharp way.

سوکایەتیکردن ئەمەی ئەنجامدەدا بەشێوەیەکی کورت و زیرەکانە.

Let's first go to "Hamlet."

با سەرەتا باسی "هامڵێن" بکەین.

Right before this dialogue,

ڕێک پێش ئەم گفتوگۆیە.

Polonius is the father of Ophelia, who is in love with Prince Hamlet.

پۆڵۆنۆس باوکی ئۆفیڵیایە کە ئەویش خۆشەویستی شازادە هامڵێتە.

King Claudius is trying to figure out why Prince Hamlet is acting so crazy

پادشا کڵاودیۆس هەوڵدەدات تێبگات بۆچی شازادە هامڵێت هێندە شێتانە ڕەفتاردەکات.

since the king married Prince Hamlet's mother.

مادام پادشا هاوسەرگیری لەگەڵ دایکی شازادە هامڵێت کردووە.

Polonius offers to use his daughter to get information from Prince Hamlet.

پۆڵۆنیۆس پێشنیاری بەکارهێنانی کچەکەی کرد بۆ بەدەستهێنانی زانیاری لە شازادە هامڵێت

Then we go into Act II Scene 2.

دەچینە سەر نواندنی ٢ دیمەنی ٢.

Polonius: "Do you know me, my lord?"

پۆڵۆنیۆس: "دەمناسیت، خاوەنپایە؟"

Hamlet: "Excellent well. You're a fishmonger."

هامڵێت: "زۆرچاکە. تۆ ماسیفرۆشیت."

Polonius: "Not I, my lord."

پۆڵۆنیۆس: "نەخێر، خاوەنپایە"

Hamlet: "Then I would you were so honest a man."

هامڵێت: "هیوادار پیاوێکی ڕاستگۆ بوایت."

Now, even if you did not know what "fishmonger" meant,

ئێستا، تەنانەت ئەگەر نەشزانیت واتای "ماسیفرۆش" چییە،

you can use some contextual clues.

دەتوانیت هەندێ نیشانەی دەق بەکاربهێنیت

One: Polonius reacted in a negative way, so it must be bad.

یەک: کاردانەوەی پۆڵۆنیۆس نەرێنی بوو واتای ئەوەیە کە خراپە.

Two: Fish smell bad, so it must be bad.

دوو: ماسی بۆنی ناخۆشە، واتای ئەوەیە کە خراپە.

And three: "monger" just doesn't sound like a good word.

سێ: "کڕیاری کەلوپەل" بە وشەیەکی باش ناچێت

So from not even knowing the meaning,

بۆیە لە نەزانینی واتاکەوە،

you're beginning to construct some characterization

تۆ دەستدەکەیت بە دروستکردنی شتێک لە خەیاڵت

of the relationship between Hamlet and Polonius,

لەبارەی پەیوەندی نێوان پۆڵۆنیۆس و هامڵێت،

which was not good.

کە باش نەبوو.

But if you dig some more, "fishmonger" means a broker of some type,

بەڵام ئەگەر کەمێک قوڵتر ببیتەوە، "ماسیفرۆش" بەجۆرێک واتای دەڵاڵ دەگەیەنێت،

and in this setting, would mean like a pimp,

لەم دۆخەش بەواتای گەواد دێت،

like Polonius is brokering out his daughter for money,

وەک ئەوەی کە پۆڵۆنیۆس کچەکەی بۆ پارە دەفرۆشێت،

which he is doing for the king's favor.

کە بەڕاستی ئەمکارە لەبەر خاتری پادشا دەکات.

This allows you to see that Hamlet is not as crazy as he's claiming to be,

ئەوەش ئەوە دەردەخات کە هامڵێت هێندە شێت نییە کە خۆی دەردەخات،

and intensifies the animosity between these two characters.

هەروەها دوژمنداری لەنێوان ئەم دووانە زیاددەکات.

Want another example?

نموونەیەکی ترت دەوێت؟

"Romeo and Juliet" has some of the best insults of any of Shakespeare's plays.

"ڕۆمیۆ و جوڵێیت" بەشێک لە باشترین سوکایەتیکردنەکانی شکسپیر لەخۆدەگرێت

It's a play about two gangs,

،شانۆگەریەکە لەبارەی دوو چەتەوە

and the star-crossed lovers that take their own lives.

هەروەها ٢ ئەویندار کە لەکۆتاییدا خۆیان دەکوژن.

Well, with any fisticuffs

لەهەر یاری بۆکسێنێکدا

you know that there is some serious smack talk going on.

دەزانیت قسەی شەڕانگێز دەگوترێت.

And you are not disappointed.

بێهیواش نیت.

In Act I Scene 1, right from the get-go

نواندنی ١ دیمەنی ١، لە سەرەتاکەیەوە

we are shown the level of distrust and hatred

ئاستی ڕق و بێمتمانەیی دەبینین

the members of the two families, the Capulets and Montagues, meet.

ئەندامانی ٢ خانەوادەکە، کاپوڵێت و مۆنتاگیو، یەکتری دەبینن.

Gregory: "I will frown as I pass by, and let them take it as they list."

گریگۆری: ڕووگرژ دەبم کاتێک بەلایاندا تێدەپەڕم، چۆن دەیانەوێت با واتێبگەن."

Sampson: "Nay, as they dare, I will bite my thumb at them,

سمپسن: نا، ئەگەر دەوێرن پەنجە گەورەمیان بۆ دەگەزم،

which is a disgrace to them, if they bear it."

کە ئابڕووچوونە ئەگە خۆگر بن و بێدەنگ بن."

Enter Abraham and Balthasar.

ئابرەهام و بالتازەر دێنە ژوورەوە.

Abraham: "Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?"

ئابرەهام: "پەنجەگەورەت بۆمان دەگەزیت، گەورەم؟"

Sampson: "I do bite my thumb, sir."

سمپسن: "پەنجەگەورەم دەگەزم، گەورەم."

Abraham: "Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?"

ئابرەهام: "پەنجەگەورەت بۆمان دەگەزیت، گەورەم؟"

Okay, so how does this development help us understand mood or character?

باشە، ئەم بەرەوپێشچوونە چۆن یارمەتیمان دەدات لە تێگەیشتنی میزاج و کارەکرەت؟

Well, let's break it down to the insult.

باشە، با ڕوونی بکەینەوە تا بگەین بە سوکایەتیکردنەکە.

Biting your thumb today may not seem like a big deal,

گەزتنی پەنجەگەورە لە سەردەمی ئێستا شتێکی گرنگ نییە،

but Sampson says it is an insult to them.

بەڵام سمپسن گوتی ئەوە سوکایەتیکردنە بۆیان.

If they take it so, it must have been one.

ئەگەر ئاوا لێکیبدەنەوە، دەبێت سوکایەتی بێت.

This begins to show us the level of animosity

ئەوەش دەستدەکات بە پیشاندانی ئاستی دوژمنداری

between even the men who work for the two Houses.

لەنێوان ئەو پیاوانەی بۆ ٢ خانەوادەکە کاریان دەکرد.

And you normally would not do anything to someone

ئاسایی هیچ شتێک لە کەسێک ناکەیت

unless you wanted to provoke them into a fight,

مەگەر بتەوێت بکەوێتە شەڕ لەگەڵت،

which is exactly what's about to happen.

کە بەتواوی ئەو شتەیە کە خەریکە ڕوودەدات.

Looking deeper, biting your thumb in the time in which the play was written

جوانتر لێکیبدەینەوە، گەزتنی پەنجەگەورە لەم سەردەمەدا کە شانۆکەی تێدا نووسراوە

is like giving someone the finger today.

وەک ئەوە وایە لە سەردەمی ئێستا پەنجەی ناوەڕاستت پیشانی کەسێك بدەیت

A pretty strong feeling comes with that,

بۆیە هەستێکی سەیر لەگەڵی دێتە ئاراوە،

so we now are beginning to feel the tension in the scene.

ئێستا لە دیمەنەکە هەست بە شڵەژان دەکەین.

Later on in the scene, Tybalt, from the House of the Capulets,

دواتر لە هەمان دیمەن، تیباڵتی خانەوادەی کاپوڵێت،

lays a good one on Benvolio from the House of the Montagues.

سوکایەتیەکی باش بە بێنڤۆڵیۆی خانەوادەی مۆنتاگۆی دەکات.

Tybalt: "What, art thou drawn among these heartless hinds?

تیباڵت: "چی، شمشێرێکی ئیفلیج لە ناو خزمەتکاری ترسنۆک؟

Turn thee, Benvolio, and look upon thy death."

Benvolio: "I do but keep the peace; put up thy sword,

I hate the word, as I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee.

Have at thee, coward!"

Okay, heartless hinds.

We know that once again, it's not a good thing.

دووبارر دەزانین کە شتێکی باش نییە.

Both families hate each other, and this is just adding fuel to the fire.

هەردوو خانەوادە ڕقیان لە یەکتریە ئەوەش وەک پێداکردنی بەنزینە بە ئاگر.

But just how bad is this stinger?

بەڵام ئاستی خراپی ئەم هێرشکردنە وشەییە چەندە؟

A heartless hind is a coward,

خزمەتکاری ترسنۆک واتای ترسنۆک دەگەیەنێت،

and calling someone that in front of his own men, and the rival family,

بانگکردنی کەسێک لەبەردەم پیاوەکانی بەمە هەروەها لەلایەن خانەوادە دژەکەیان،

means there's going to be a fight.

واتای ئەوەیە شەڕێک ڕوودەدات.

Tybalt basically calls out Benvolio,

تیباڵت بانگی بێنڤۆڵیۆ دەکات بۆ دەرەوە

and in order to keep his honor, Benvolio has to fight.

بۆ پاراستنی شکۆی، بێنڤۆڵیۆ ناچارە شەڕبکات.

This dialogue gives us a good look

ئەم گفتوگۆیە دیمەنێکی جوانمان پێدەدات

at the characterization between these two characters.

لە بەرجەستەکردن لەنێوان ٢ کارەکتەرەکە.

Tybalt thinks that the Montagues are nothing but cowardly dogs,

تیباڵت پێیوایە مۆنتاگۆکان هیچ نین جگە لە سەگی ترسنۆک،

and has no respect for them.

هیچ ڕێزێکیشی بۆیان نییە.

Once again, adding dramatic tension to the scene.

دووبارە زیادکردنی شڵەژای درامی بۆ دیمەنەکە.

Okay, now here's a spoiler alert.

باشە، ئاگادارکردنەوەی خراپوونت بۆدەکەم.

Tybalt's hotheadedness and severe hatred of the Montagues

کەسایەتی میزاجی تیباڵت و ڕقلێبوونەوەی مۆنتاگۆکان

is what we literature people call his hamartia,

ئەوەیە کە ئێمەی شارەزای وێژە پێیدەڵێین هەڵەی کوشندە،

or what causes his downfall.

یان ئەوەی بەروە لەناوچوونی دەبات.

Oh, yes.

بەڵێ.

He goes down at the hands of Romeo.

دەکەوێتە دەستی ڕۆمیۆ.

So when you're looking at Shakespeare, stop and look at the words,

بۆیە کاتێک سەیری شکسپیر دەکەیت، بوەستە و سەیری وشەکان بکە،

because they really are trying to tell you something.

چونکە بەڕاستی هەوڵدەدەن شتێکت پێبڵێن.
