In the celestial court of the Jade Emperor lived seven princesses.

٧ شازادە دەژیا لە دادگای ئاسمانی ئمپڕاتۆریەتی جەید

Each had their chosen place in court,

هەردانەیەکیان شوێنی خۆیان هەبوو لە دادگاکە،

but the youngest princess had a special skill.

بەڵام بچوکترینیان بەهرەیەکی تایبەتی هەبوو.

She could pluck clouds from the sky and spin them into the softest robes.

دەیتوانی دەست لە هەورەکان بدات لە ئاسمان و بیانکاتە بەرگێکی نەرم.

Her work was so precise,

کارەکەی زۆر بە وردی دەکرد،

not even the most expert eye could find a seam.

تەنانەت شارەزاترین کەسیش نەیدەتوانی درزێکی لێ ببینێتەوە.

But her craft was the same day after day, and she longed for new inspiration.

بەڵام پیشەکەی هەر وەک خۆیبوو و ئەو ئارەزووی ئیلهامی تازەی دەکرد.

Finally, the Queen Mother granted the weaver permission to visit Earth.

لە کۆتایدا شاژنی دایک قایلبوو ڕێگەیدا سەردانێکی زەوی بکات.

The other princesses would accompany her

شازادەکانی تر هاوەڵی دەکەن

to protect their sister from earthly dangers.

بۆ پاراستنی خوشکەکەیان لە مەترسی زەوی.

Dressed in special robes that allowed them to fly between Heaven and Earth,

جلێکی وەهایان لەبەرکرد کە دەیان توانی بفڕن بە ناو بەهەشت و زەویدا،

the sisters soared down from the sky.

خوشکەکان لە ئاسمانەوە دابەزینە زەوی.

The weaver was in awe of the rolling hills and rivers,

لەبەر ترس لە گرد و روبارەکان،

and the sisters decided to swim in one of the glittering streams.

و خوشکەکان بڕیاریاندا مەلە بکەن لە ناو یەکێک لە رووبارە درەوشاوەکان.

As the weaver floated, she dreamt about staying forever.

و کاتێ جلەکەیان سەرئاو دەکەوت، خەونیان بە مانەوە دەبینی بۆ تا هەتایە.

Meanwhile, a lone cowherd approached the riverbank.

لە هەمان کاتدا. گاوانێک لە رۆخی رووبارەکە نزیک بوویەوە.

He came here often to sweep his parent’s grave

زۆربەی جارەکان دەهات بۆ ئێرە بۆ خاوێنکردنەوەی گۆڕی دایک و باوکی

and speak with his only companion—

و قسەی لەگەڵ تەنها هاوڕێکەی دەکرد—

a stoic bull who listened patiently to the cowherd’s sorrows.

کە گایەکی خۆڕاگر بوو، بە جوانی گوێی بۆ خەمەکانی گاوانەکە دەگرت.

But upon seeing the weaver’s beauty, the cowherd forgot his routine.

بەڵام لەگەڵ بینینی جوانی شازادەکە، خۆی لە بیر کرد.

While he longed to introduce himself, his lonely lifestyle had made him timid.

لەکاتێکدا ویستی خۆی بناسێنێت، شەرم و ترس دایگرت لەبەر شێوازی ژیانی بە تەنها.

Thankfully, the bull saw his friend's plight and offered some advice.

خۆشبەختانە، گاکە هاوڕێکەی بینی و هەندێ ئامۆژگاری کرد.

He told the cowherd of the swimmer’s celestial origins

بە گاوانەکەی گوت دەربارەی مەلەکەرە ئاسمانیەکان

and of her dream to stay on Earth;

و خەونەکەی کە مانەوەیە لە زەوی؛

but also that she could only remain if she lost her ticket back to Heaven.

هەروەها ئەوەش کە تاکە رێگا بۆ مانەوە لەناوچوونی بلیتی گەڕانەوەیە.

As the cowherd approached, the princesses flew away in fear—

و کاتێ گاوانەکە نزیک بوویەوە، شازادەکە لە ترسان هەڵفڕی و دورکەوتەوە—

leaving their dreaming sister behind.

بەجێهێشتنی خەونی خوشکەکەی لە دواوە.

While keeping her magic robes hidden,

لەکاتێکدا کە رۆبە جادوویەکەی بە شاراوەی هێشتەوە،

the cowherd offered his own garment as a substitute.

گاوانەکە جل و بەرگەکەی خۆی پێشکەش کرد لەجیاتی.

And after gaining her trust, the pair began exploring the countryside.

و پاش بەدەست هێنانی متمانەی شازادەکە، دەستیان کرد بە گەڕان بە گوندەکە.

She was struck by his caring nature,

شازادەکە سەرسام بوو بە گرنگیدانی بە سروشت،

and he learned to see the world’s wonder through her eyes.

و کوڕەکە فێربوو چۆن جوانی جیهان ببینێت لە چاوەکانی.

Before long, the two had fallen deeply in love.

پێش ماوەیەک، هەردووکیان بە قوڵی کەوتنە داوی خۆشەویستی یەکترەوە.

The weaver and the cowherd built a prosperous life.

شازادەکە و گاوانەکە ژیانێکی سەرکەوتوانەیان دروستکرد.

Their farm flourished, and the weaver taught her skills to local villagers.

کێڵگەکەیان گەشایەوە و شازادەکە بەهرەکانی خۆی فێری گوندنشینەکانی ناوچەکە دەکرد.

As time marched on, the pair was blessed with two healthy children,

پاش ماوەیەک، هەردووکیان سوپاسگوزاربوون بە پێدانی دوو منداڵی تەندروست،

but their bull was growing old.

بەڵام گایەکەیان پیربوو.

Before he died, the bull implored the family to keep his hide

پێش ئەوەی بمرێ، لەبەر خۆشەویستی بۆ خێزانەکە گاکە خۆی شاردەوە

and use its magic at their time of need.

و جاددوەکەی خۆی لە کاتی پێویستدا بەکار هێنا.

While the husband grieved for his friend,

لەکاتێکدا مێردەکە خەفەتبار ببوو بۆ هاوڕێکەی،

the weaver’s mind turned to her other family.

مێشکی شازادەکەش گۆڕا و بیری خێزانەکەی تری دەکرد.

Dusting off her magical robe, she decided to pay a visit to the heavens.

جلە جادوویەکەی کرد بە تۆز و بڕیاریدا سەردانی ئاسمان بکات.

But when the weaver swept into her old home,

بەڵام کاتێ شازادەکە گەڕایەوە ناو ماڵە کۆنەکەی،

no one seemed surprised to see her.

کەس سەرسام نەبوو بە بینینی.

With a start, she realized that barely any time had passed—

هەر یەکسەر زانی کە بە ئەستەم کات تێپەڕیووە—

for a year on Earth was merely a day in Heaven.

ساڵێک لە زەوی هێندەی رۆژێکە لە بەهەشت(ئاسمان).

When her family learned of her new life, they were enraged.

و کاتێک خێزانەکەی زانیان کە ژیانێکی نوێی دروستکردووە، توڕەبوون.

How dare she waste her love on a human?

چۆن وێرات خۆشەویستیەکەت بەفیڕۆ بدەیت لە مرۆڤێک؟

The weaver tried to escape back to Earth,

شازادەکە ویستی هەڵبێت و بگەڕێتەوە بۆ زەوی

but the Queen Mother plucked a golden hairpin from her head

بەڵام دایکە شاژنەکە تاڵە قژێکی زێرینی لەسەری برد

and tore through the sky.

ئاسمانی پێ دڕی.

A great gulf opened, forming a river of stars between Heaven and Earth.

کەنداوێک گەورە کرایەوە و رووبارێک دروستبوو لە ئەستێرەکانی نێوان ئاسمان و زەوی.

Below, the cowherd trembled, but he also remembered the bull’s final words.

لە خوارەوە گاوانەکە دەلەرزی, کۆتا قسەی گایەکەی لەبیربوو.

Hastily placing each child in a basket,

بەخێرای هەر منداڵێکی لە سەبەتەیەکدا دانا،

he draped the bull’s pelt over his back and hurtled upwards.

کەوتە لێدان لە سەر پشتی گایەکەی بەرەوە سەرەوە بۆ ئاسمان.

Above the clouds, each lover attempted to wade through the surging stars.

لەسەرەوە هەورەکان، هەر خۆشەویستێک هەوڵیدەدا تا بزربێت بەهۆی ئەستێرەکانەوە.

But no matter how hard they struggled,

بەبێ گرنگی دان بەوەی کە چۆن گیربوونە،

the gulf between them only grew wider.

کەنداوەکەی نێوانیان فراوانتر بوو.

Day after day, the Queen Mother watched without pity.

رۆژ دوای رۆژ، دایکەکە سەیری دەکرد بەبێ هیچ بەزەییەک.

Years passed, and the weaver and the cowherd had no one,

ساڵانێک تێپەڕین، و شازادەکە و گاوانەکە لەلای یەکتر نەبوون،

except the passing magpies to cheer them on.

جگە لە مردنی قەلەباچکە تا دڵخۆش بن.

Finally, their love moved the Queen Mother’s heart.

لەکۆتایدا، خۆشەویستیەکەیان گەیشت بە ناو ناخی دایکەکە.

While she couldn’t forgive her granddaughter entirely,

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا نەیدەتوانی بە تەواوەتی لە کچەکەی خۆشبێت،

the Queen Mother would allow the weaver to meet her earthly family once a year.

دایکەکە رێگەی بە شقزادەکە دا کە ساڵی جارێک چاوی بە خێزانەکەی بکەوێت لە زەوی.

And so, in late summer, the magpies form a bridge across the Milky Way,

بەم شێوەیە، لە کۆتا هاویندا، قەلەباچکەکان لە سەر پردەکەوە ڕێگای کاکێشانیان بڕی،

reuniting the weaver and the cowherd.

شازادەکە و گاوانەکەیان بەیەک گەیاندەوە.

At this time of year, millions of people in East and Southeast Asian countries

ساڵانە لەو رۆژەدا، ملیۆنان خەڵک لە رۆژهەڵات و باشوری رۆژهەڵاتی وڵاتانی ئاسیا

tell similar tales of these star-crossed lovers,

چیرۆکی خۆشەویستی هاوشێوە دەگێرنەوە لەگەڵ پەرینەوەی ئەستێرە،

celebrating their annual reunion.

یادی ساڵانەی خۆیان دەکەنەوە.
