What do horror movies and comedies have in common?

فیلمە ترسناک و کۆمیدیاکان چی هاوبەشیان هەیە؟

The two genres might seem totally different,

دوو جۆرەکە لەوانەیە تەواو جیاواز بن،

but the reason they're both so popular

بەڵام هۆکاری بەناوبانگی ئەوان

لەوانەیە خاڵێکی هاوبەشی ئەوان بێت:

is perhaps because what they have in common:

their use of dramatic irony.

بەکارهێنانی توانجی درامی.

First, let's clarify.

سەرەتا، با ڕوونی بکەینەوە.

There are three types of irony out there.

سێ جۆری توانج هەیە.

Situational irony is when you expect one thing,

توانجی بارودۆخی کاتێک پێشبینی شتێک دەکەیت،

but get the opposite.

بەڵام پێچەوانەکەی ڕوودەدات.

Verbal irony is when someone says something,

توانجی زارەکی کاتێک کەسێک شتێک دەڵێت،

but truly means the opposite.

بەڵام مەبەستی پێچەوانەکەیەتی.

Dramatic irony, though,

توانجی درامی، هەرچەندە،

is what we will be looking at right now.

ئەوەیە ئێستا سەیری دەکەین.

Dramatic irony is when the audience

توانجی درامی کاتێک جەماوەر

seems to know more about an event,

پئدەچێت زیاتر بزانن وەک لە ڕووداوەکە،

a situation,

بارودۆخێک،

or a conversation

یان گفتوگۆیەک

than the characters in the movie,

لە کارەکتەرەکانی فیلمەکە،

on the show,

لە زنجیرەکە، یان لە کتێبەکە.

or in the book do.

The audience is in on a secret

جەماوەر نهێنییەکە دەزانێت

that the characters have missed.

کە کارەکتەرەکە نایزانێت.

This is a great story-telling device

شێوازێکی باشی چیڕۆک گێڕانەوەیە

that creates tremendous emotion within that text.

کە هەستگەلێکی زۆر دروست دەکات لە نووسینەکە.

Think about it for a moment.

بۆ ماوەیەک بیری لێبکەوە.

How does it feel when, in a horror film,

هەستت چۆنە کاتێک، لە فیلمێکی ترسناک،

you know that the scary villain is hiding

دەزانیت خراپەکارەکە چی حەشارداوە

behind that door in the darkened room.

لە پشت دەرگا ژوورە تاریکەکە.

The music becomes eerie,

موسیقاکە ترسناک دەبێت،

the lighting creates complete shadows,

ڕووناکییەکان سێبەر دروست دەکەن،

this has to be bad for the hero!

ئەمە دەبێت خراپ بێت بۆ پاڵەوانەکە!

Of course, though, that hero must enter the room

بێگومان، هەرچەندە، پاڵەوانەکە دەبێت بچێتە ژوور

to find the villain.

تا خراپەکارەکە بدۆزێتەوە.

You feel tremendous tension and the suspense

هەست بە پەشۆکاوی و تەنگژییەکت زۆر دەکەیت

of knowing that someone will jump out and be scary,

بە زانینی ئەوەی کەسێک دێتە دەرەوە و ترسناک دەبێت،

but you just don't know when.

بەڵام تۆ نازانیت کەی.

That tension is dramatic irony:

ئەم پەشۆکاوییە توانجی درامییە:

you know something more than the characters in the film.

تۆ شتێک زیاتر دەزانیت وەک لە کارەکتەری ناو فیلمەکە.

Now, take the typical comedy.

ئێستا، بێینە سەر کۆمیدیا.

There will probably be some type of "misunderstanding".

لەوانەیە شتێک هەبێ وەک “هەڵە تێگەیشتن“.

Again, we know more of what is going on

دووبارە، زیاتر دەزانین لە ڕووداوەکە

than the characters do.

وەک ئەوەی کارەکتەرەکان دەیزانن.

خەیاڵی پلانی دوو کارەکتەر بکە

Picture two characters making a plan

for a birthday surprise for their roommate

بۆ هەژەندێکی ڕۆژی لەدایکبوون بۆ هاوژووریان

while that roommate overhears

کاتێ هاوژوورەکە گوێی لە

the entire conversation from the hallway.

تەواوی گفتوگۆکە دەبێت لە هۆڵ.

From there, confusion and misunderstanding occur,

لەوێوە، سەرلێشێواوی و هەڵە تێگەشتن ڕوودەدات،

and the tension builds.

وە پەشۆکاوییەکە دروست دەبێت.

This isn't the same tension as the horror film

هەمان پەشۆکاوی فیلمی ترسناک نییە

since it is probably pretty funny

ئەمە زۆر پێکەنیناوی دەبێت

as the character tries to figure out the whos and the whats,

کاتێک کارەکتەرەکە هەوڵدەدات بزانێت چی دەبێت،

but it serves as a great example

بەڵام ئەمە وەک نموونەیەکی بەرزی

of the tension and suspense of dramatic irony.

پەشۆکاوی و تەنگژی توانجی درامییە.

This tension or suspense in both genres

ئەم پەشۆکاوی و تەنگژییەی هەردوو جۆرەکە

drives the story and keeps the plot progressing.

چیڕۆکەکە و نەخشەکە دەباتە پێشەوە.

The audience wants, no, needs,

جەماوەر دەیەوێت، نەخێر پێویستە،

to see the tension of the dramatic irony broken

ببینێت پەشۆکاوی توانجی درامی تێکدەشکێت

either by the scary person jumping out of the shadows

جا چ بەو پیووە ترسناکە بێت دێیە دەرەوە لە تاریکی

or by someone finally revealing someone's true identity

یان کەسێک لە کۆتاییدا ڕووی ڕاستەقینەی کەسێک دەربخە

and clearing up the confusion.

و سەرلێشێواوییەکە نەهێڵێت.

So, when you feel like you are in on a secret,

بۆیە، کە هەست دەکەیت نهێنییەک دەزانیت،

that is dramatic irony,

ئەمە توانجی درامییە،

a hallmark of all the great writers,

نیشانەیەکە لە نووسەرە گەورەکانەوە،

from Shakespeare to Hitchcock.

لە شکسپیرەوە بۆ هیچکۆک.
