What do horror movies and comedies have in common?

ئایا چ شتێکی هاوبەش لە نێوان فیلمی ترسناک و کۆمیدی هەیە؟

The two genres might seem totally different,

وەک دوو جۆری وێژەی جیاواز خۆیان دەنوێنن،

but the reason they're both so popular

بەڵام لەوانەیە هۆکاری بڵاو بوونەوەیان

is perhaps because what they have in common:

ئەوە بێت کە لە شتێکدا هاوبەشن:

their use of dramatic irony.

تەوسی شانۆیی.

First, let's clarify.

با شی بکەینەوە.

There are three types of irony out there.

سێ جۆر تەوس هەیە.

Situational irony is when you expect one thing,

تەوسی بار، کاتێک چاوەڕوانی شتێک دەکەیت،

but get the opposite.

بەڵام پێچەوانەکەی ڕوو دەدات.

Verbal irony is when someone says something,

تەوسی دەربڕین، کاتێک شتێک دەگوترێت،

but truly means the opposite.

بەڵام واتایەکی پێچەوانەی هەیە.

Dramatic irony, though,

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا، تەوسی شانۆیی،

is what we will be looking at right now.

ئەوە کە ئێمە ئێستا سەیری دەکەین.

Dramatic irony is when the audience

تەوسی شانۆیی بریتیە لەوەی کاتێک

seems to know more about an event,

بینەر زانیاری زیاتر لە بارەی ڕووداوێک،

a situation,

بارێک،

or a conversation

یان گفتوگۆیەک هەیە

than the characters in the movie,

لە چاو ڕۆڵ گێرەکانی ناو فیلمەکان،

on the show,

یان بەرنامەکان،

or in the book do.

یان لە نێو کتێبەکان.

The audience is in on a secret

بینەر ئاگاداری ئەوەیە

that the characters have missed.

کە ڕۆڵگێرەکە بێ ئاگاییە.

This is a great story-telling device

ئەم ئامرازە نایابەی گێرانەوەی چیرۆک

that creates tremendous emotion within that text.

هەستێکی قوڵ و گەرەورە لە ناو تێکست دەخوڵقێنێت.

Think about it for a moment.

بۆ یەک چرکە بیری لێ بکەوە.

How does it feel when, in a horror film,

کاتێک لە فیلمە ترسهێنەرەکان، دەزانیت

you know that the scary villain is hiding

ڕۆڵیگێرە خراپەکارەکە خۆی حەشار داوە

behind that door in the darkened room.

لە پشت دەرگەی ژوورە تاریکەکە.

The music becomes eerie,

مۆسیقایی ترسهێنەر دەژێنرێت،

the lighting creates complete shadows,

رووناکی سێبەر درووست دەکات،

this has to be bad for the hero!

کە بۆ ڕۆڵگێری سەرەکی خراپ دەبێـ.

Of course, though, that hero must enter the room

بەڵام سەڕەڕایی ئەوەی کە پاڵەوان دەبێت بچێتە ژوورەکە

to find the villain.

تا ڕۆڵگێرە شەرانگێزەکە بدۆزێتەوە.

You feel tremendous tension and the suspense

بەڵام هەست بە ترس و دڵە ڕاوکێ دەکەیت

of knowing that someone will jump out and be scary,

کەسێک لە ترسان لە شوێنی خۆی ڕادەپەڕێت،

but you just don't know when.

بەڵام نازانیت ئەمە کەی ڕوو دەدات.

That tension is dramatic irony:

ئەم هەڵچوونە، تەوسی شانۆییە:

you know something more than the characters in the film.

تۆ زیاتر لە ڕۆڵ گێر زانیاریت هەیە.

Now, take the typical comedy.

ئێستا با باسی کۆمیدیا بکەین.

There will probably be some type of "misunderstanding".

بە دڵنیایەوە هەندێک هەڵە تێگەیشتن روو دەدات.

Again, we know more of what is going on

دیسان بینەر زیاتر زانیاری لە

than the characters do.

ڕۆڵگێر هەیە.

بیهێنە بەر چاو، دوو ڕۆڵگێڕ پلان دادەڕێژن

Picture two characters making a plan

for a birthday surprise for their roommate

بۆ سەرپڕایزی ڕۆژی لە دایک بوونی هاوڕێەکیان

while that roommate overhears

کاتێک هاوڕیەکەیان لە ڕێرەوی باڵەخانەکەدا

the entire conversation from the hallway.

پلانەکەیان دەبیستێت.

From there, confusion and misunderstanding occur,

لێرەوە هەڵە تێگەیشتن دەخوڵقێت

and the tension builds.

و ئاڵۆزی شانۆیی درووست دەبێت.

This isn't the same tension as the horror film

ئەم ئاڵۆزییە، هاوشێوەی ئاڵۆزی فیلمە ترسهێنەرەکان نییە

since it is probably pretty funny

چونکە پێکەنیناویە

as the character tries to figure out the whos and the whats,

بە تایبەت ئەو کاتەی ڕۆڵگێڕ بە دوای وەلامی بۆ و کەی وێڵە،

but it serves as a great example

بەڵام ئەمە نموونەیەکی باشە

of the tension and suspense of dramatic irony.

ئاڵۆزی و تەوسی شانۆیی.

This tension or suspense in both genres

ئەم ئاڵۆزی و تەوسە لە هەر دوو جۆری شانۆدا

drives the story and keeps the plot progressing.

بەردەوامی بە چیرۆکەکە و ڕووداوەکان دەدات.

The audience wants, no, needs,

بینرەکان پێویستیان بەوەیە

to see the tension of the dramatic irony broken

کە ئاڵۆزی و تەوسی شانۆیی،

either by the scary person jumping out of the shadows

یان کەسێک لە سێبەردا ترسیهێنەرانە درە بکەوێت،

or by someone finally revealing someone's true identity

یان بە ئاشکرا کردنی ناسنامەی کەسێک،

and clearing up the confusion.

ئاڵۆزی و هەڵە تێگەیشتن چارەسەر بێت.

So, when you feel like you are in on a secret,

بۆیە، کاتێک هەست دەکەیت بە نهێنی شتێک دەزانیت

that is dramatic irony,

ئەمە تەوسی شانۆییە،

a hallmark of all the great writers,

کە باشترین تەکنییکی نووسەرە گەورەکانە،

from Shakespeare to Hitchcock.

لە شکسپیرەوە بگرە تا هیتچۆک.
