Have you ever helped set a table

تائێستا هاوکاربوویت لە مێز ڕازاندنەوە؟ و بیرت لەوە کرد بێتەوە

and found yourself wondering

where to place the forks?

چەتاڵەکان لەکوێ دابنێیت؟ یان

Or sat down to eat a restaurant

دابنیشی بۆ خواردن لە چێشتخانەیەک

and wondered which utensils to use?

بیربکەیتەوە سەرەتا دەست بەریت بۆ کام کەرەستە؟

Well, here's some simple, traditional etiquette tips

باشە، لێرە هەندێک ئاسانکاری نەریتی باس دەکەین

on how to set a table.

لەسەر ئەوەی چۆن مێزێک بڕازێنیتەوە.

What would happen if you set a table like this?

چی ڕوودەدات گەر مێزەکە وا بڕازێنیتەوە؟

It doesn't look good,

باش دەرناکەوێت،

and you have to clean up the mess

و دەبێت پاکی بکەیتەوە

before you can even start.

پێش ئەوەی تەنانەت دەست پێ بکەیت.

Let's try another way.

با ڕێگایەکی تر تاقیبکەینەوە.

To start, use a placemat or tablecloth,

بۆ دەستپێک، بەکارهێنانی ڕاخەری مێز یان سەرمێز،

but not both,

بەڵام نەک هەردووکی،

so the dishes aren't directly on the table.

بەمەش قاپەکان ڕاستەوخۆ لەسەر مێزەکە نابن.

This is more about looks than etiquette,

ئەمە زیاتر وەک ئەدەب وایە،

but it's rare to see nothing under a plate

بەڵام دەگمەنە لە ژێر قاپ هیچ نەبێت

unless you're eating at a picnic table.

مەگەر تۆ لەسەر مێزێکی سەیران نان بخۆیت.

Set out any flowers,

هەندێ گوڵ بهێنە، هەندێ مۆمدان،

candlesticks,

or other decorations you like.

یان هەر ڕازێنەرەوەیەک کە بە دڵتە.

Candles are usually only lit at night.

مۆم بە گشتی لە شەوان پێ دەکرێت.

Start with utensils for the main course,

بەوانە دەست پێ بکە کە سەرەکین بۆ ژەمەکە،

putting your dinner fork on the left

بۆ نانی ئێوارێ چەتاڵەکە بکە چەپ

and your dinner knife on the right-hand side

هەروەها چەقۆکەش بکەرە لای دەستی ڕاست

since these are the hands we use them with.

ئەمەش بەپێی دەستەکان داماناون.

Here's a helpful tip:

ئەمە ئاسانکارییەکە: هەمیشە

You always eat outside-in,

لە ناوەوە بۆ دەرەوە دەست دەبەیت،

so to set for salad,

جا بۆ ڕێکخستنی زەڵاتەکە،

we'll put the salad fork

چەتاڵی زەڵاتەکە

to the outside of the dinner fork

دەکەینە دەرەوەی چەتاڵی خواردنەکە

and the salad knife to the outside of the dinner knife.

وە چەقۆی زەڵاتەکە دەکەینە دەرەوەی چەقۆی خواردنەکە.

We'll have salad first,

سەرەتا زەڵاتەکانمان دەبێت،

then our main course.

دواتر ژەمە سەرەکییەکەمان.

Notice, too, that the knife blades

ئەوەشت بیربێت، تیغی چەقۆکان

are both pointed toward the plate.

دەبێت هەردووک ڕوویان لە قاپەکە بێت.

This is an old tradition

ئەمە نەریتێکی کۆنە

from a time when dinner knives were quite sharp,

دەگەڕێتەوە بۆ ئەو کاتەی چەقۆکانی خواردن زۆر تیژ بوون،

and it was a sign of politeness and nonaggression

ئەمەش نیشانەی ئەدەب و هەڵەشە نەبوونە

to keep them pointed away from other diners.

دانانیان بە ئاراستەی پێچەوانەی ئەندامەکانی دیکە.

We might have some soup,

ڕەنگە هەندێ شۆربامان هەبێت،

and since soup usually comes first,

گەر واش بوو بە گشتی سەرەتا شۆربا دێت،

the soup spoon goes outside the knives

کەوچکی شۆربا دەکەوێتە دەرەوەی چەقۆکان

since we use our right hand to hold it.

لە کاتێکدا بە دەستی ڕاستمان کەوچک دەگرین.

Here's another tip:

ئەمەش ئاسانکارییەکی دیکەیە:

Only set the table with what you'll need.

مێزەکە تەنها بەوانە بڕازێنەوە کە پێویستت پێیەتی.

If you're not eating soup,

گەر شۆربا ناخۆیت،

don't set a soup spoon.

ئەوا کەوچکی شۆربا دامەنێ.

Now, for dessert, we'll have ice cream

ئێستا، بۆ شیرینی گەر ئایسکرێمان هەبێت

so we'll place the dessert up top

شوێنی شیرینیەکە لە سەرەوە دەبێت

since we don't need it for a little while.

چونکە تا دوای نان پێویستمان پێی نییە.

Notice that the bowl of the spool

بیرت بێت کە دەفرێک بەکەرە

is pointing to the left.

دەکەوێتە چەپەوە.

This way, when it's time to eat,

بەم شێوەیە، کاتێک کاتی خواردنی،

you just slide it down

تەنها دەیهێنیتە خوارەوە

and it's in the right spot.

و بەوەش لە شوێنێکی ڕاستدایە.

گەر کێکت هەبێت،

If you were having cake,

you'd set a fork and flip it 180 degrees

ئەوا چەتاڵێک دادەنێت بە پلەی ١٨٠ هەڵیدەگێڕیتەوە

so it would be right side-up on the left instead.

بەوەش لەلای ڕاستەوە دادەنێیت بە ئاراستەی چەپ.

Next we'll anchor our setting with the plate.

دواتر قاپێک پێشکەش بە ڕازاندنەوەکەمان دەکەین.

You can also serve from the kitchen

دەشتوانی لە ناندینەکە رێکی بخەیت

then bring them to the table.

و دواتر بیکەیتە سەر مێزەکە.

The bread plate goes up and to the left of the setting,

دەفری نان دەکەیتە بەشی سەرەوە بۆ لای چەپی ڕێکخستنەکە،

and the butter knife goes on the plate at an angle,

و چەقۆی کەرەکەش لەسەر دەفرەکە بە گۆشەیەک دادەنرێت،

again, with the blade pointing in.

دووبارە، تیغەکەی ڕووەوە ناوەوە بێت.

There's only one spot left,

تەنها یەک شوێن ماوە،

ئەویش شوێنی خواردنەوەکانە.

and that's for the drinks.

Set the wine glass to the upper right,

پەرداخی شەراب بکەرە بەشی سەرەوەی دەستە ڕاست،

and then place the water glass to the left of it at an angle.

و شوێنی پەرداخی ئاو دەکرێتە لای چەپی بە گۆشەیەک.

If you're like me

گەر منت بەدڵ بێت

and can never remember which goes where,

و هەرگیز لەبیرت نەچێتەوە چی دەچێتە کوێ،

think water, wine,

بیربکەوە ئاو، شەراب

w-a, w-i;

ئاو، شەڕاب

a, i;

ئـ، شـ

they go left to right in alphabetical order.

بە شوێیەکی ئەلفابێت لە چەپەوە بەرەو ڕاستن.

Another tip:

To remember left and right with the bread and the drinks,

لەبیرت بێت کە چەپ و ڕاست لەگەڵ نان و خواردنەوەکان،

think B-M-W like the car.

بیر لە بی.ئێم.و بکەوە وەک ئۆتۆمبێل.

B, your bread plate, is on the left;

نـ, قاپی نانەکەت. لەلای چەپ:

M, your meal, is in the middle,

ژ، ژەمەکەت. لەناوەندا،

and W, your water, is on the right.

و ئـ، ئاوەکەت لەلای ڕاست.

Lastly, the napkin traditionally goes to the left of the forks,

لە کۆتاییدا دەستەسڕەکە بە پێی نەریت دەکەوێتە لای چەپی چەتاڵەکان،

though it's okay to put it underneath them, too.

هەروەها ئاسایشە لەژێریان بێت.

For a fancier meal like this one

بۆ ژەمێکی کەشخە وەک ئەمە

that takes up a lot of space,

کە زۆر شوێن دەگرێت،

we'll put it in the middle.

دەیکەینە ناوەندەوە.

Now we're ready to eat.

ئێستا ئامادەین بۆ خواردن.

بەهیوام ئەم ئاسانکاریانە یارمەتیدەربن
