Which is correct: "A dozen eggs is?" Or "A dozen eggs are?"

کامەیان ڕاستە: ”دەزەنێک لە ھێلکە؟” یان ” دەرزەنێک لە ھێلکەکان؟”

I remember being in elementary school,

لەبیرمە کاتێک لە سەرەتایی بووم،

and my teachers making a big deal about the unit.

مامۆستاکەم گرینگیێکی زۆری بەم بابەتە دەدا.

And I never really got that,

کە من ھەرگیز لێی تێنەدەگەیشتم،

until one day, I was in the grocery store,

تاکو ڕۆژێک لە دوکانی سەوزە و میوە بووم،

دەمەویست سێوێک بکڕم بەس، نەم دەتوانی یەک سێو بکڕم.

and I wanted to buy an apple, but I couldn't buy one apple.

I had to buy a whole bag of apples.

دەبوایە کیسە سێوێکی تەواو بکڕم.

So I did. I bought one bag of apples,

منیش وام کرد، کیسەیێکی تەواو سێوم کڕی،

I took it home, I took one apple out of the bag, and I cut it up.

بردمە ماڵەوە، سێوێکم لە کیسەکە دەرھێناو لەتم کرد.

پاشان پارچەیێکم لێ خوارد.

And then I ate one slice.

One bag, one apple, one slice.

یەک کیسە، یەک سێو، یەک پارچە.

Which of these is the real "one"?

کام لەمانە ڕاستەکەیانە؟

Well, they all are of course,

باشە، بێگومان ھەموویان،

and that's what my elementary teachers were trying to tell me.

لەبەر ئەوەبوو مامۆستاکانی سەرەتایم دەیانویست پێم بڵێن.

Because this is the important idea behind whole number place value,

چونکە ئەمە بیرۆکەیێکی گەورەیە لە پشت ھەموو ژمارەی نرخی شوێنەکانەوە،

decimal place value and fractions.

Our whole number system depends

ھەموو سیستەمی ژمارەکانمان پشتی پێ دەبەستن

on being able to change what we count as "one".

کە توانای گۆڕینی ئەوەی ھەبێت کە وەک “یەک” دەیژمێرین.

Our whole number system depends on being able to change units.

ھەموو سیستەمی ژمارەکانمان پشت دەبەستن بە گۆڕینی خانەکان.

There are two ways to change units.

دوو ڕێگا ھەیە بۆ گۆڕینی خانەکان.

We can compose, and we can partition.

دەتوانین ڕێکی بخەین، دەتوانین بەش بەشی بکەین.

When we compose units,

کاتێک خانەکان ڕێکدەخەین،

we take a bunch of things, we put them together to make a bigger thing,

لقێک لە شتەکان وەردەگرین و لەپاڵ یەک دایان دەنێین تاکو شتێکی گەورەتر دروست بکەین.

like a dozen eggs.

وەک دەرزەنێک ھێلکە.

We take 12 eggs, put them together to make a group,

دوانزە ھێلکە دێنین و بەیەکەوە دایان دەنێین و تاکو گروپێک دروست بکەین،

and we call that group a dozen.

بە گروپەکەش دەڵێین دەرزەنێک.

A dozen eggs is a composed unit.

دەرزەنێک ھێلکە خانەی ڕێکخراون.

Other examples of composed units

نمونەی تر بۆ خانەی ڕێکخراو

include a deck of cards, a pair of shoes, a jazz quartet

وەک پشتی کارتەکان، جوتێک پێڵاو، گروپی ژەنینی جاز

and of course, Barbie and Ken make a couple.

بێگومان، باربی و کین کەپڵن.

But think about a loaf of bread.

بەڵام بیر لە پارچەیێک سەمون بکەوە.

That's not a composed unit,

ئەمە خانەی ڕێکخراو نییە،

because we don't get a bunch of slices from a bunch of different bakeries

چونک کۆمەڵێک پارچەمان لە نانەواخانەی جیاواز دەست نەکەوتوە

and put them together to make a loaf.

بەیەکەوە دایانبنی تاکو لەفەیێک دروست بکەین.

No, we start with a loaf of bread

نەخێر، لە پارچە سەمونێک دەست پێدەکەین

and we cut it into smaller pieces called slices,

دەیبڕین بۆ پارچەی بچوک پێیدەڵێن قاشەکان،

so each slice of bread is a partitioned unit.

کەواتە ھەر قاشێک لە نانەکە خانەی بەش بەش کراوە.

Other examples of partitioned units

نمونەی تر بۆ خانەی بەش بەش کراو

include a square of a chocolate bar, a section of an orange

چوارگۆشەکانی قاڵبێک لە شوکڵاتە، پارچەیێک لە پڕتەقاڵ

and a slice of pizza.

پارچەیێک لە پیتزا.

The important thing about units is that once we've made a new unit,

کەواتە گرینگترین شت دەربارەی خانەکان ئەوەیە کە خانەی نوێی پێ دروست بکەین،

we can treat it just like we did the old unit.

بەھەمان شێوەی خانە کۆنەکان مامەڵەی لەگەڵ دەکەین.

We can compose composed units,

دەتوانین خانە ڕێکخراوەکانیش ڕێک بخەینەوە،

and we can partition partitioned units.

خانە بەش بەش کراوەکانیش بەش بەش بکەینەوە.

Think about toaster pastries.

بیر لەنان برژێنەری نەخشدار بکەوە.

They come in packs of two,

لە پێچراوەی دووپارچە پێکدێت،

لەدوایدا ئەو پێچراوانە بەشێوەی سێتی چوار پارچە دادەندرێت بەیەکەوە

and then those packs get put together in sets of four

to make a box.

تاکو بۆکس دروست بکەن.

So when I buy one box of toaster pastries,

بۆیە کاتێک نان برژێنەری کارەبایی دەکڕم،

am I buying one thing,

ئایا یەک شت دەکڕم،

four things, or eight things?

چوار شت، یان ھەشت شت؟

پشت بە خانەکان دەبەستێت.

It depends on the unit.

One box, four packs, eight pastries.

یەک بۆکس، چوار پێچراوە، ھەشت نەخشاندن.

And when I share a slice of pizza with a friend,

کاتێک پارچەیێک لە پیتزا دەدەم بە ھاوڕێکەم،

we have to cut "it" into two smaller pieces.

دەبێت لەتی بکەین بۆ پارچەی بچوکتر.

So a box of toaster pastries is composed of composed units,

بۆیە بۆکسێک لە نانبرژێنەری کارەبایی ڕێکخراوی خانەی ڕێکخەرە،

and when I split a slice of pizza,

کاتێک پارچەیێک لە پیتزا دوو لەت دەکەم.

I'm partitioning a partitioned unit.

خانەی بەش بەشکراو بەش بەش دەکەم.

But what does that have to do with math?

بەڵام ئەوە چ پەیوەندیێکی بە بیرکارییەوە ھەیە؟

In math, everything is certain.

لە بیرکاریدا، ھەموو شتێک بێگومانە.

Two plus two equals four,

دوو کۆ دوو یەکسانە بە چوار،

and one is just one.

یەک تەنیا یەکە.

But that's not really right.

بەڵام ئەمە لەڕاستیدا ڕاست نییە.

One isn't always one.

یەک ھەمیشە یەک نییە.

Here's why: we start counting at one,

بۆیە لێرەوە: لە ژمارە یەکەوە دەست بە ژماردن دەکەین،

and we count up to nine: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,

لە ژماردن بەردەوام دەبین تاکو نۆ:١,٢,٣,٤,٥,٦,٧,٨,٩

and then we get to 10, and in order to write 10,

لەدوایدا دەگەینە ژمارە ١٠، بۆ ئەوەی ژمارە ١٠ بنوسین،

we write a one

ژمارە یەک دەنوسین

and a zero.

سفریش.

That one means that we have one group,

ژمارە یەک مانای ئەوەیە کە یەک گروپمان ھەیە،

سفر یارمەتیمان دەدات ئەوەمان بیربێت کە

and the zero helps us remember

that it means one group, not one thing.

واتە ١ گروپە نەک ١ شت.

But 10, just like one,

بەڵام ١٠، وەک یەک وایە،

just like a dozen eggs,

ھەروەکو دەرزەنە ھێلکەکە،

just like an egg,

ھەروەکو ھێلکە،

10 is a unit.

١٠ خانەیە.

And 10 tens make 100.

دە ١٠ ی ١٠٠ دروست دەکات.

So when I think about 100,

کاتێک بیر لە١٠٠ دەکەمەوە،

it's like the box of toaster pastries.

وەک نانبرژێنەری کارەبایی نەخشێندراوەکەیە.

Is 100 one thing,

١٠٠ یەک شتە،

10 things

١٠ شت

or 100 things?

یان١٠٠ شت؟

And that depends on what "one" is,

ئەوە پشت بەوە دەبەستێت ئایا ژمارە “یەک” چییە،

it depends on what the unit is.

پشت دەبەستێت بەوەی ئایا خانە چییە.

So think about all the times in math when you write the number one.

کەواتە بیرلەو کاتانەی بیرکاری بکەوە کاتێک ژمارە یەک دەنوسی.

No matter what place that one is in,

گرینگ نییە شوێنی ئەو یەکە چییە،

no matter how many things that one represents,

گرینگ نییە ئەو ژمارە یەکە چەند شت نیشان دەدات،

one is.

یەک ھەر یەکە.
