제가 초등학교 때 말이죠,

I remember being in elementary school,

and my teachers making a big deal about the unit.

선생님께서 단위에 대해서 열심히 설명해 주셨습니다.

당시 전혀 이해하지 못 했었죠. 그런데 어느 날 식료품 점에 갔더니

And I never really got that,

until one day, I was in the grocery store,

사과를 사려고 했는데 한 개의 사과를 살 수는 없었죠.

and I wanted to buy an apple, but I couldn't buy one apple.

I had to buy a whole bag of apples.

봉지째로 사야 했어요.

So I did. I bought one bag of apples,

그래서 한 봉지를 샀죠.

I took it home, I took one apple out of the bag, and I cut it up.

집으로 가져가서 사과 하나를 꺼내서 잘랐습니다.

그리고 한 조각을 먹었어요.

And then I ate one slice.

사과 한 봉지, 사과 한 개, 사과 한 조각.

One bag, one apple, one slice.

Which of these is the real "one"?

어떤게 정답일까요?

사실 다 맞는 얘기죠. 제 초등학교 선생님도 그걸 설명하셨거든요.

Well, they all are of course,

and that's what my elementary teachers were trying to tell me.

단위를 바꾸는 데엔 두 가지 방법이 있습니다.

There are two ways to change units.

We can compose, and we can partition.

묶거나 분할하는 겁니다.

묶어서 단위를 바꿀 때는

When we compose units,

we take a bunch of things, we put them together to make a bigger thing,

몇 개를 모아서 더 큰 단위로 만들죠.

like a dozen eggs.

계란 한 다스 처럼요.

우린 12개의 계란을 가지고 한 뭉터기로 놓은 다음

We take 12 eggs, put them together to make a group,

and we call that group a dozen.

그걸 한 다스라고 부르죠.

계란 한 다스는 묶음 단위입니다.

A dozen eggs is a composed unit.

But think about a loaf of bread.

That's not a composed unit,

그건 묶음 단위가 아니죠.

because we don't get a bunch of slices from a bunch of different bakeries

왜냐하면 각각 다른 빵들에서 나온 빵 조각들을 함께 놓고

and put them together to make a loaf.

빵 한 덩어리라고 부르지는 않잖아요.

No, we start with a loaf of bread

대신, 빵 한덩어리를 더 작은 덩어리로 잘라

and we cut it into smaller pieces called slices,

이걸 조각이라고 하죠. 그러니까 각각의 빵 조각들은 분할 단위입니다.

so each slice of bread is a partitioned unit.

Think about toaster pastries.

토스터 패스트리를 생각해 봅시다.

한 팩에 두개가 들어 있지만

They come in packs of two,

네 팩을 묶어 한 박스로

and then those packs get put together in sets of four

to make a box.

만들죠.

So when I buy one box of toaster pastries,

그래서 제가 토스터 패스트리 한 박스를 사면,

제가 하나를 사는 건가요,

am I buying one thing,

네 개 아니면 여덟개를 사는 건가요?

four things, or eight things?

그건 단위에 따라 달라지죠.

It depends on the unit.

One box, four packs, eight pastries.

한 박스, 네 팩, 여덟개의 패스트리.

And when I share a slice of pizza with a friend,

그리고 제가 친구랑 피자 한 조각을 나눌 때,

두 조각으로 더 작게 나눠야겠죠.

we have to cut "it" into two smaller pieces.

그래서 토스터 패스트리 한 박스는

So a box of toaster pastries is composed of composed units,

묶음 단위로 이루어진 셈이죠.

그리고 제가 피자 한 조각을 더 자른다면

and when I split a slice of pizza,

I'm partitioning a partitioned unit.

한 조각을 분할 단위로 나누는 겁니다.

But what does that have to do with math?

이게 수학이랑 무슨 상관이냐고요?

수학에서는, 모든 것이 명확합니다.

In math, everything is certain.

Two plus two equals four,

2+2는 4고, 1은 그냥 1이죠.

and one is just one.

그런데 이게 꼭 맞지는 않아요.

But that's not really right.

One isn't always one.

하나를 항상 하나라고 할 순 없습니다.

Here's why: we start counting at one,

설명해보죠. 우리가 1부터

and we count up to nine: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,

9까지 센다고 합시다. 하나, 둘, 셋, 넷, 다섯, 여섯, 일곱, 여덟, 아홉.

and then we get to 10, and in order to write 10,

그 다음엔 10이죠. 그리고 10을 쓰기 위해서는

we write a one

우린 1과 0을 같이 쓰죠.

and a zero.

그럼 1은 이미 우리가 한 그룹을 가지고 있다는 얘기고

That one means that we have one group,

and the zero helps us remember

여기서 0은 한 개가 아니라, 한 그룹을 의미하는 거죠.

that it means one group, not one thing.

그러니까 10은 한 개처럼,

But 10, just like one,

just like a dozen eggs,

계란 한 다스처럼

just like an egg,

10 is a unit.

10 또한 단위입니다.

그리고 10이 10개면 100이 되죠.

And 10 tens make 100.

So when I think about 100,

그래서 전 100을 토스터 패스트리 한 박스처럼 생각합니다.

it's like the box of toaster pastries.

Is 100 one thing,

100은 하나인가요,

10개인가요

10 things

or 100 things?

100개인가요?

And that depends on what "one" is,

이건 그 '하나'가 무엇이냐에 따라 달라지죠.

it depends on what the unit is.

단위에 따라 바뀌는 겁니다.

그러니까 여러분이 수학을 공부할 때 1을 쓸 때마다 생각해보세요.

So think about all the times in math when you write the number one.

1 이 어느 자리에 오든,

No matter what place that one is in,

no matter how many things that one represents,

1 이 얼마나 많은 것들을 대신하든,

one is.
