3 Funny Stories About English Communication Problems

And in this video, I'm gonna talk to you about the importance of pronunciation in English.

그리고 이번 영상에서는 영어에서 발음의 중요성에 대해 말씀드리겠습니다.

Especially the difference between long sounds and short sounds.

특히 긴 소리와 짧은 소리의 차이가 큽니다. 왜? 영어에는

Why?

Because in English there are a lot of words that are almost the same

긴 소리가 나는 것, 짧은 소리가 나는 것 외에는

except that one has a long sound, one has a short sound.

거의 똑같은 단어가 많기 때문입니다 .

And they have completely different meaning.

그리고 그것들은 완전히 다른 의미를 가지고 있습니다.

...you know... depending on the length of the sound.

...알다시피... 소리의 길이에 따라 다릅니다.

So let me just give you a simple example.

그럼 간단한 예를 들어보겠습니다.

If you say, "beach".

"해변"이라고 말하면.

You know what a beach is right? You go on holiday. You like going to the beach.

해변이 뭔지 아세요? 당신은 휴가를 갑니다. 당신은 해변에 가는 것을 좋아합니다.

And does not have the same meaning as b!tch.

그리고 b!tch와 같은 의미는 없습니다.

And you know forgive me for saying the word but and...

그리고 내가 그런 말을 한 것을 용서해주세요. 그러나 그리고...

It doesn't have the same meaning.

그것은 같은 의미를 가지고 있지 않습니다.

And it's actually a very rude word,

그리고 실제로는 매우 무례한 말이므로

so you should be very careful.

매우 조심하셔야 합니다.

And... I have a story about that which is quite funny.

그리고... 꽤 재미있는 이야기가 있어요.

It wasn't funny at the time but now it's funny actually.

And when I taught English in France,

그리고 제가 프랑스에서 영어를 가르쳤을 때

I had a student once in my classroom, and you know I was explaining ..ummm.. I think

제 교실에 한 학생이 있었는데, 제가 설명하고 있었던 거 아시죠..음.. 제 생각엔

you know some grammar or something.

문법이나 뭐 좀 아시는 것 같아요.

And he was clearly distracted.

그리고 그는 확실히 주의가 산만해졌습니다.

So I got really angry and I said, "Hey! What are you doing?"

그래서 저는 정말 화가 나서 "야! 뭐 하는 거야?"라고 말했어요.

And he said, "Oh oh madam I'm sorry. I'm sorry I'm searching my sh!t."

그러자 그는 "아, 부인 죄송해요. 검색해서 죄송해요."라고 말했습니다.

Umm... so two mistakes. First mistake - he forgot the preposition 'for'.

음... 실수가 두 개군요. 첫 번째 실수 - 그는 전치사 'for'를 잊어버렸습니다.

Ok. So 'search for'.

좋아요. 그래서 '검색'합니다.

But that's ok. I understand that.

하지만 괜찮습니다. 나는 이해.

But he said, "sh!t". And he actually meant 'sheet'.

그러나 그는 "쉿! t"라고 말했습니다. 그리고 그는 실제로 '시트'를 의미했습니다.

- for you know a piece of paper.

- 당신은 종이 한 장을 알고 있습니다.

I didn't get it.

And I got really angry, you know.

And he didn't understand why I was getting angry.

And I said, "You can't say that word," you know.

I mean, you know, he showed me a piece of paper.

As I said, "That's not 'sh!t', that's 'sheet'. Okay.

So yeah I think he got really stressed out because he didn't know why I was getting angry.

그럼 그 사람은 내가 왜 화를 내는지 모르기 때문에 스트레스를 많이 받은 것 같아요.

And I didn't know what he was talking about.

그리고 나는 그 사람이 어떤 사람인지도 몰랐습니다. 그러니까

So I think you should really - you should be careful.

정말 조심해야 할 것 같아요.

Because you know, - long sound, short sound -

왜냐하면 긴 소리, 짧은 소리가

It's sometimes it's a different word with a completely different meaning.

때로는 완전히 다른 의미를 지닌 다른 단어일

And if the word that you're saying is rude, is rude, then, you know, it's quite annoying.

수도 있으니까요 . 그럼 좀 짜증나니까

So just be careful, okay?

when we use different kinds of English because as you know we don't have the

same English in the UK and in the US, for example.

So some Americans don't understand me when I speak English

발음이 다르고 항상 같은 단어를 사용하지 않기 때문에

because I don't have the same pronunciation and because I don't always use the same words.

내 말을 이해하지 못합니다

.

Most of the time we do understand each other

대부분의 경우 우리는 서로를 이해

but sometimes we don't and it can be quite confusing at times.

하지만 때로는 그렇지 않고 때로는 상당히 혼란스러울 수도 있습니다.

For example, umm, to me there's a ground floor in a building.

예를 들어, 음, 저에게는 건물의 1층이 있습니다.

To an American person my ground floor is their first floor.

미국인에게 나의 1층은 1층입니다.

So if I talk about the first floor, I don't mean the same floor as an American person.

그러니까 1층이라고 하면 미국인과 같은 층을 말하는 게 아닙니다.

So see it can get a bit confusing.

그러니 조금 혼란스러울 수 있습니다.

And talking about confusion, I have a story which is quite funny.

그리고 혼란에 관해 이야기할 때, 꽤 재미있는 이야기가 있습니다.

I was in college at the time and I was on the phone with an American friend

저는 당시 대학에 다니고 있었고 미국인 친구와 통화를 하면서

and we talked you know for 20-25 minutes and

20~25분 정도 이야기를 나눈 뒤

then we decide to go grab a drink together. So I'm like, "yeah we should we you know we

함께 술 한잔하러 가기로 결정했습니다. 그래서 저는 "그래 , 밖에 나가서 술 한잔 하자는 걸

should go out and have a drink."

알아둬야겠구나"라고 했어요 .

And she's like, "Okay yeah sure. What a good idea." And then she says,

그러면 그녀는 "그래요, 그렇죠. 정말 좋은 생각이에요."라고 하더군요. 그리고 그녀는

"Let me just put on some pants."

"바지를 좀 입자"라고 말했습니다.

Now you have to know pants in the USA,

이제 미국에서 바지를 알아야 하는데,

means like trousers.

바지 같은 뜻이에요.

Okay your pants. Okay like these.

알았어 바지. 좋아, 이것들처럼.

In British English, pants are underpants. Okay?

영국식 영어에서는 pants가 underpants입니다. 좋아요?

So for me, when she says, "Let me put on some pants."

그래서 저한테는 그녀가 "바지 좀 입혀주세요."라고 말하면요.

I get this image of my friend talking to me for 20 minutes naked.

내 친구가 나에게 알몸으로 20분 동안 이야기를 나누는 모습이 포착되었습니다.

You know with no underpants on.

팬티 안입은거 아시죠?

So I was quite shocked and I said,

그래서 저는 매우 충격을 받았고 "뭐?"

"What?"

라고 말했습니다.

She said, "Yeah, yeah. Just grab some pants.

그녀는 "그래, 그래. 그냥 바지 좀 가져가라.

I said, "What do you mean pants?"

내가 "바지가 무슨 뜻이야?"라고 물었더니

She said, "Oh no no no, I mean trousers."

그녀는 "아 안돼 안돼 안돼, 내 말은 바지 말이야"

And then we just laughed so hard because you know

라고 말했고 우리는 너무 웃었어요

for a minute there, there was a just a lot of confusion.

. 잠시 동안 혼란이 많았습니다.

Um, so yeah, depending on where you come from, I think you shouldn't underestimate ...um..

음, 그래, 출신에 따라 과소평가하면 안 될 것 같은데... 음..

you know the differences. And you have to be careful sometimes with

차이점도 알잖아요.

the words that you choose. You know? So...

당신이 선택하는 단어.. 그렇죠..

Yeah that's something that can happen. So you see even native speakers sometimes

그런 일이 일어날 수 있어요.. 그래서 원어민도 가끔

..um.. don't really understand each other.

..

That happens as well.

음..그럴

So yeah that's what I wanted to tell you.

And in this video, I want to talk to you about communication problems.

이번 영상에서는 의사소통 문제에 대해 이야기하고 싶습니다.

And when you're an English teacher working abroad or even if you've traveled,

그리고 해외에서 영어선생님으로 근무하시거나 여행을 다녀오신 분들도

you do know that there are often communication problems.

의사소통에 문제가 있는 경우가 많다는 사실을 아실 겁니다.

And from my experience as a teacher, I think these problems and often arise because

그리고 교사로서의 제 경험에 비추어 볼 때 이러한 문제는

people try and translate their mother tongue into English.

사람들이 모국어를 영어로 번역하려고 하기 때문에 종종 발생한다고 생각합니다.

And my main piece of advice as a teacher, to you, is don't do that.

그리고 제가 교사로서 여러분에게 드리고 싶은 가장 중요한 조언은 그렇게 하지 말라는 것입니다.

Don’t try and translate.

번역하려고 하지 마세요.

Because every language has their own words

모든 언어에는 여러분이 알고 있는 고유한 단어와 표현이 있기 때문입니다

and expressions you know…and I know that when you're not that fluent,

. 그리고 여러분이 그다지 유창하지 않을 때는

it's reassuring to use your own language and translate it.

자신의 언어를 사용하여 번역하는 것이 안심이라는

Unfortunately, it doesn't, it's not going to work out.

것을 알고 있습니다 . 불행하게도, 그것은 잘 되지 않을 것입니다.

And, umm, For example, let's just and take an example.

그리고, 음, 예를 들어, 예를 들어보겠습니다.

I taught…umm.. English in France for a few years.

And French has a lot of expressions and we for example say, umm,

“To get a blue.” So that's the expression in French.

“Avoir un bleu.” And that means ‘to get bruised’.

Okay so ‘a bruise’ in French is literally ‘a blue’.

So.. but, you can't say, “I got a blue.” If you say, “I got a blue,”

그러니까.. 하지만 “파란색이 났어요”라고 말할 수는 없어요. 만약 당신이 "I got a blue"라고 말한다면

you… you're actually translating the exact words from French into English.

, 당신은 실제로 프랑스어에서 영어로 정확한 단어를 번역하는 것입니다.

And I'm not gonna understand what you mean.

그리고 나는 당신이 무슨 뜻인지 이해하지 못할 것입니다.

And I've had people say that.

그리고 사람들이 그렇게 말한 적이 있어요.

I've had someone one day, umm, say “oh I got a blue,”

어느 날 누군가가 “아, 파란색이 나왔어”라고 말했는데

and I obviously didn't know what that meant.

저는 그게 무슨 뜻인지 전혀 몰랐습니다.

So…

And that is something that you should avoid doing okay?

그리고 그건 당신이 피해야 할 일이잖아요?

Um… and I got a story about that. For example, umm,

음… 그리고 그에 관한 이야기를 들었어요. 예를 들어, 음,

I was correcting an essay once because I worked in a high school.

제가 고등학교에서 일했기 때문에 한 번은 에세이를 수정하고 있었습니다.

And some … this student had written you know an essay in English.

그리고 일부... 이 학생은 영어로 에세이를 썼습니다.

I think she was describing a holiday or something.

내 생각엔 그녀가 휴일 같은 것을 묘사하고 있었던 것 같아요.

And, umm, at some point I can read,

그리고, 음, 어느 순간

“Oh on the last day, I was so sad and because

'아 마지막 날 너무 슬펐고

I was walking in the garden and suddenly I fell and broke my face.”

정원을 걷다가 갑자기 넘어져서 얼굴이 부러졌어'라고 읽을 수 있죠.

And it honestly took me a good 10 minutes to understand what she meant.

그리고 솔직히 그 말이 무슨 뜻인지 이해하는 데 10분 정도 걸렸습니다.

And it's actually because there's an expression in French,

그리고 실제로 프랑스어에는 "suis cassé la Figure"라는 표현이 있기 때문입니다.

"suis cassé la figure" Which is literally, “to break your face,”

말 그대로 "얼굴을 부러뜨리다"라는 뜻

and it means to hurt yourself. And so, she wanted to say, “I was walking

이고, 자신에게 상처를 입힌다는 뜻입니다.

그래서 그녀는

in the garden, suddenly I fell and hurt myself,”

“정원을 걷다가 갑자기 넘어져 다쳤어요”

But she translated French into English

라고 말하고 싶었지만 프랑스어를 영어로 번역했습니다.

You know… Thinking umm, and I guess you know we all think that.

아시다시피...

생각해보면 음, 우리 모두 그렇게 생각한다는 걸 아시겠죠.

We all think, oh my language is the reference.

우리 모두는 '아, 나의 언어가 기준이다'라고 생각합니다.

이것이 표준이고 다른 모든 언어는 나를 모방합니다.

It's the standard and every other language imitates mine.

And just you know I can simply translate.

그리고 제가 간단히 번역할 수 있다는 걸 아시죠?

But, unfortunately, you can't.

하지만 안타깝게도 그렇게 할 수 없습니다.

So as a teacher, again, with years of experience, umm please don't try and do that.

그러니 교사로서 다시 한 번 수년간의 경험을 바탕으로 음, 그렇게 하려고 하지 마세요.

Don't translate your mother tongue. You just have to learn as much as you can.

모국어를 번역하지 마세요.

당신은 당신이 할 수있는만큼 많이 배워야합니다.

Watch films. Read books.

영화 봐. 책을 읽어보세요.

Try and understand how people talk in English. You know the expressions that they use,

사람들이 영어로 어떻게 말하는지 이해하려고 노력해보세요.

당신은 그들이 사용하는 표현을 알고, 기억하고 사용합니다.

remember them and use them.

But don't translate your mother tongue into English.

하지만 모국어를 영어로 번역하지 마세요.
