So recently, we asked ourselves

if we could invent a format

And we discovered that we didn't have to invent it,

As you can see, a project evolves through

At each meeting, there's way too many ideas.

Only the best ones can survive.

And through a process of architectural selection,

we might choose a really beautiful model

or we might have a very functional model.

We mate them. They have sort of mutant offspring.

And through these sort of generations of design meetings

we arrive at a design.

A very literal way of showing it is a project we did

The design process was really tough,

this sort of idea of a rational tower

sort of expanding the public space onto what we refer to as

a Scandinavian version of the Spanish Steps in Rome,

but sort of public on the outside, as well as on the inside,

But Darwin doesn't only explain the evolution of a single idea.

As you can see, sometimes a subspecies branches off.

And quite often we sit in a design meeting

So as a result, we never throw anything out.

We keep our office almost like an archive

You never know when you might need it.

And what I'd like to do now, in an act of

warp-speed storytelling,

is tell the story of how two projects evolved

by adapting and improvising

The first story starts last year when we went to Shanghai

to do the competition for the Danish

National Pavilion for the World Expo in 2010.

And we saw this guy, Haibao.

तिथे आम्ही हायबाओला पाहिले.

He's the mascot of the expo,

तो होता त्या विश्व प्रदर्शनाचा प्रतिकदूत (Mascot).

and he looks strangely familiar.

आणि तो आमच्या एकदम परिचयाचा वाटला.

In fact he looked like a building we had designed

for a hotel in the north of Sweden.

When we submitted it for the Swedish competition we thought

it was a really cool scheme, but it didn't exactly

look like something from the north of Sweden.

The Swedish jury didn't think so either. So we lost.

But then we had a meeting with a Chinese businessman

who saw our design and said,

"Wow, that's the Chinese character for the word 'people.'"

So, apparently this is how you write "people,"

अस्सं म्हणजे चीनी लिपीमध्ये

as in the People's Republic of China.

द पीपल्स रिपब्लिक ऑफ चायना लिहिताना हे चिन्ह वापरतात तर!

We even double checked.

आम्ही पुन्हा एकदा खात्री करून घेतली!

And at the same time, we got invited to exhibit

त्याच वेळी आम्हाला शांघाय औद्योगिक

at the Shanghai Creative Industry Week.

कल्पकता सप्ताहासाठी निमंत्रण मिळाले.

So we thought like, this is too much of an opportunity,

मग आम्ही ठरवले ही सुवर्णसंधी वाया घालवायची नाही!

so we hired a feng shui master.

आम्ही एका फेंगशुई तज्ज्ञाची मदत घेतली.

We scaled the building up three times to Chinese proportions,

and went to China.

So the People's Building, as we called it.

This is our two interpreters, sort of reading the architecture.

It went on the cover of the Wen Wei Po newspaper,

which got Mr. Liangyu Chen, the mayor of Shanghai,

ते पाहून आम्हाला शांघायचे महापौर श्री.लियान्ग यु चेन

to visit the exhibition.

यांनी भेट दिली.

And we had the chance to explain the project.

तेव्हा आम्हाला त्यांना ही संकल्पना सांगण्याची संधी मिळाली.

And he said, "Shanghai is the city in the world

ते म्हणाले “ शांघायमध्ये जगातील

with most skyscrapers,"

सर्वाधिक गगनचुंबी इमारती आहेत."

but to him it was as if the connection to the roots had been cut over.

पण त्यांच्यामते मातीशी नाते तुटत चालले होते.

And with the People's Building, he saw an architecture

that could bridge the gap between the ancient wisdom of China

ती नाळ पुन्हा जोडली जाण्याची शक्यता दिसली,जी प्राचीन चीनचे ज्ञान

and the progressive future of China.

आणि प्रगतीशील चीनच्या भविष्यामधला दुवा ठरेल.

So we obviously profoundly agreed with him.

Unfortunately, Mr. Chen is now in prison for corruption.

But like I said, Haibao looked very familiar,

because he is actually the Chinese character for "people."

कारण चीनी भाषेत त्याचा अर्थच होतो सामान्य जनता.

And they chose this mascot because

आणि त्याला प्रदर्शनाचा दूत म्हणून निवडला होता कारण

the theme of the expo is "Better City, Better Life."

प्रदर्शनाचं बोधवाक्य होतं “उत्तम शहरे, उत्तम जीवन”

Sustainability.

अर्थात शाश्वत विकास.

And we thought, sustainability has grown into being

आम्हाला असं वाटतं होतं की शाश्वत विकास म्हणजे

this sort of neo-Protestant idea

अशी पुरोगामी कल्पना बनली आहे ज्यातून

that it has to hurt in order to do good.

स्वतःला त्रास झाल्याशिवाय चांगलं निष्पन्न होत नाही.

You know, you're not supposed to take long, warm showers.

म्हणजे पहा, शॉवरखाली खूप वेळ आंघोळ करू नये.

You're not supposed to fly on holidays because it's bad for the environment.

सुट्टीवर असताना विमानप्रवास टाळावा कारण ते वातावरणास हानिकारक असतं.

Gradually, you get this idea that sustainable life

हळूहळू तुम्हाला वाटू लागते की शाश्वत विकासाचे आयुष्य

is less fun than normal life.

हे नेहमीच्या आयुष्यापेक्षा निरस असते.

So we thought that maybe it could be interesting to focus on examples

म्हणूनच आम्हाला वाटलं की अशा उदाहरणांकडे लक्ष वेधावे

where a sustainable city

ज्यात शाश्वत विकासामुळे

actually increases the quality of life.

शहरी जीवनाचे राहणीमान अधिक चांगले होते.

We also asked ourselves, what could Denmark possibly show China

that would be relevant?

You know, it's one of the biggest countries in the world, one of the smallest.

China symbolized by the dragon.

Denmark, we have a national bird, the swan.

China has many great poets,

but we discovered that in the People's Republic

public school curriculum,

they have three fairy tales by An Tu Sheng,

or Hans Christian Anderson, as we call him.

So that means that all 1.3 billion Chinese

have grown up with "The Emperor's New Clothes,"

"The Matchstick Girl" and "The Little Mermaid."

It's almost like a fragment of Danish culture

integrated into Chinese culture.

The biggest tourist attraction in China is the Great Wall.

चीनमधले सर्वाधिक प्रेक्षणीय स्थळ म्हणजे चीनची भिंत.

The Great Wall is the only thing that can be seen from the moon.

पृथ्वीवरील एकमेव गोष्ट जी चंद्रावरून दिसते.

The big tourist attraction in Denmark is The Little Mermaid.

डेन्मार्कमधले सर्वाधिक प्रेक्षणीय स्थळ म्हणजे द लिटिल मर्मेड (छोटी जलपरी)

That can actually hardly be seen from the canal tours.

जी खरं सांगायचं तर नदीच्या सहलबोटीतूनदेखील नीट दिसेलच याची खात्री नाही!

(Laughter)

And it sort of shows the difference between these two cities.

यातून जाणवतं की ही दोन्ही शहरं किती भिन्न आहेत.

Copenhagen, Shanghai,

कोपनहेगन, शांघाय

modern, European.

आधुनिक, युरोपियन.

But then we looked at recent urban development,

पण जेव्हा आम्ही चालू शहरी विकासाकडे पाहिलं

and we noticed that this is like a Shanghai street,

30 years ago. All bikes, no cars.

This is how it looks today; all traffic jam.

Bicycles have become forbidden many places.

Meanwhile, in Copenhagen we're actually expanding the bicycle lanes.

A third of all the people commute by bike.

We have a free system of bicycles called the City Bike

that you can borrow if you visit the city.

Like I said, Shanghai and Copenhagen are both port cities,

One of the first projects we ever did

was the harbor bath in Copenhagen,

sort of continuing the public realm into the water.

So we thought that these expos quite often have a lot of

state financed propaganda,

images, statements, but no real experience.

मात्र खराखुरा अनुभव मिळत नाही.

So just like with a bike, we don't talk about it.

आपण केवळ बोलून न दाखवता सायकलसारखं करुया.

You can try it.

Like with the water, instead of talking about it,

पाण्याच्याबाबतीत देखील नुसतं बोलण्याऐवजी

we're going to sail a million liters of harbor water

from Copenhagen to Shanghai,

शांघायला नेणार आहोत.

so the Chinese who have the courage can actually dive in

जे धाडसी चीनी लोकं असतील त्यांनी प्रत्यक्ष पाण्यात उडी मारून

and feel how clean it is.

अनुभवावं की ते किती स्वच्छ आहे!

This is where people normally object that it doesn't sound very sustainable

to sail water from Copenhagen to China.

कोपनहेगनहून शांघायला पाणी नेणं.

But in fact, the container ships go

full of goods from China to Denmark,

and then they sail empty back.

So quite often you load water for ballast.

So we can actually hitch a ride for free.

And in the middle of this sort of harbor bath,

The architecture of the pavilion is this sort of loop

When you go to the exhibition, you'll see the Mermaid and the pool.

So when we actually won the competition

And to our surprise we got one of our boards back

with corrections from the Chinese state censorship.

चीनी प्रशासनाने बदल सुचवले!

The first thing, the China map missed Taiwan.

पहिली गोष्ट आमच्या चीनच्या नकाशात तैवान दाखवला नव्हता.

It's a very serious political issue in China. We will add on.

हा चीनमध्ये राजकीयदृष्ट्या संवेदनशील विषय आहे. आम्ही नकाशा बदलू.

The second thing, we had compared the swan to the dragon,

It was kind of interesting because in the morning, from 9 to 11,

because she's going to be in Shanghai.

If you do come to Copenhagen,

you will probably see an installation by Ai Weiwei, the Chinese artist.

So the second story that I'd like to tell

is, actually starts in my own house.

This is my apartment.

This is the view from my apartment,

over the sort of landscape of triangular balconies

that our client called the Leonardo DiCaprio balcony.

And they form this sort of vertical backyard

where, on a nice summer day, you'll actually get introduced to all your neighbors

in a vertical radius of 10 meters.

The house is sort of a distortion of a square block.

Trying to zigzag it to make sure

that all of the apartments look at the straight views,

instead of into each other.

Until recently, this was the view from my apartment,

onto this place where our client actually bought the neighbor site.

And he said that he was going to do an apartment block

And essentially the parking is sort of occupying the deep space

And up in the sun, you have a single layer of apartments

that combine all the splendors of a suburban lifestyle,

This is our first architectural model.

It's actually a stand-up product from Switzerland,

because in Switzerland they have a natural need for diagonal elevators.

And the facade of the parking,

आणि ही पार्किंगची दर्शनी भिंत.

we wanted to make the parking naturally ventilated,

आम्हाला पार्किंग नैसर्गिकरित्या हवेशीर हवे होते.

so we needed to perforate it.

त्यामुळे आम्हाला ते जाळीदार करणे भाग होते.

And we discovered that by controlling the size of the holes,

we could actually turn the entire facade

into a gigantic, naturally ventilated,

making the entire building a 3,000 square meter artwork.

So if you go back into the parking, into the corridors,

it's almost like traveling into a parallel universe

from cars and colors,

एका समांतर दुनियेतून जणू

into this sort of south-facing urban oasis.

एखाद्या दक्षिणमुखी शहरी ओऍसिसमध्ये शिरल्याचा भास होईल.

The wood of your apartment continues outside becoming the facades.

तुमच्या घराची लाकडी भिंतच बिल्डिंगबाहेरील भिंत होईल.

If you go even further, it turns into this green garden.

आणि त्यापुढे तिचे रुपांतर एका सुंदर बगिच्यात होईल.

And all the rainwater that drops on the Mountain

या माऊंटनवर पडणारे पावसाचे

is actually accumulated.

सर्व पाणी साठवले जाते.

And there is an automatic irrigation system

एका स्वयंचलित सिंचन पद्धतीने

that makes sure that this sort of landscape of gardens,

जिने बागेला पाणी मिळते

in one or two years it will sort of transform

हा सर्व परिसर एक दोन वर्षात

into a Cambodian temple ruin,

एखाद्या प्राचीन कंबोडियन मंदिराप्रमाणे

completely covered in green.

संपूर्ण हिरवळीने झाकलेला दिसू लागेल.

So, the Mountain is like our first built example

तर अशाप्रकारे माऊंटन हे आम्ही साकारलेलं पहिलं उदाहरण आहे

of what we like to refer to as architectural alchemy.

ज्याला आम्ही स्थापत्यशास्त्रातील परीसस्पर्शी किमया असं संबोधू इच्छितो.

This idea that you can actually create, if not gold,

then at least added value by mixing

traditional ingredients, like normal apartments

पारंपारिक इमारती, पार्किंग इत्यादींना

and normal parking,

एक नवीन मूल्य प्राप्त करून देईल.

and in this case actually offer people

आणि या उदाहरणात तर लोकांना

the chance that they don't have to choose between

निर्सग सान्निध्यातील जीवन किंवा

a life with a garden or a life in the city.

शहरी जीवन यापैकी एकच निवडण्याची गरज नाही.

They can actually have both.

त्यांना दोन्ही मिळू शकतं.

As an architect, it's really hard to set the agenda.

एक वास्तुविशारद म्हणून काम करताना विशिष्ठ धोरण ठरवणं अवघड असतं.

You can't just say that now I'd like to do a sustainable city

तुम्ही असं म्हणू शकत नाही की आता मी मध्य आशियामध्ये

in central Asia,

एक शहर शाश्वत पद्धतीने विकसित करेन.

because that's not really how you get commissions.

कारण तुम्हाला कामाची कंत्राटे अशी मिळत नाहीत.

You always have to sort of adapt and improvise

तुम्हाला सतत परिस्थितीशी जुळवून घेत

to the opportunities and accidents that happen,

संधी आणि अपघातांतून घडत जात

and the sort of turmoil of the world.

जगाच्या पसाऱ्यात वावरावं लागतं.

One last example is that recently we,

आता एक शेवटचं उदाहरण आहे आम्ही नुकतंच

like last summer, we won the competition

गेल्या उन्हाळ्यात जी स्पर्धा जिंकली त्याचं.

to design a Nordic national bank.

ती होती नॉर्डिक राष्ट्रीय बँकेच्या आराखड्यासाठी

This was the director of the bank when he was still smiling.

हे त्या बँकेचे संचालक होते अर्थात तेव्हा त्यांच्या चेहऱ्यावर हसू असे.

It was in the middle of the capital so we were really excited by this opportunity.

ही राजधानीच्या अगदी मध्यभागी असल्याने या संधीमुळे आम्ही खुपच उत्साही होतो.

Unfortunately, it was the national bank of Iceland.

दुर्दैवाने ही होती आइसलँड ची राष्ट्रीय बँक.

At the same time, we actually had a visitor --

त्याचं वेळी अझरबैजान देशाच्या

a minister from Azerbaijan came to our office.

एका मंत्र्यांनी आमच्या कार्यालयाला भेट दिली.

We took him to see the Mountain. And he got very excited

आम्ही त्यांना आमचा माऊंटन प्रकल्प दाखवायला घेऊन गेलो.

by this idea that you could actually make mountains

आणि त्यांना एखाद्या इमारतीमध्ये खराखुरा पर्वत उभारण्याच्या

out of architecture,

कल्पनेने भारून टाकले.

because Azerbaijan is known as the Alps of Central Asia.

याचे कारण म्हणजे अझरबैजान हा देश मध्य आशियातील आल्प्स म्हणून ओळखला जातो.

So he asked us if we could actually imagine

मग त्यांनी आम्हाला विचारले की आम्ही खरोखर

an urban master plan

on an island outside the capital

that would recreate the silhouette of the seven most significant mountains

of Azerbaijan.

So we took the commission.

And we made this small movie that I'd like to show.

We quite often make little movies.

We always argue a lot about the soundtrack,

but in this case it was really easy to choose the song.

So basically, Baku is this sort of crescent bay

तर बाकू हे चंद्रकोरीच्या आकाराची खाडी असणारे

overlooking the island of Zira, the island that we are planning --

आम्ही बांधत असलेल्या झिरा बेटाजवळचे (शहर) आहे.

almost like the diagram of their flag.

जवळपास त्यांच्या राष्ट्रध्वजाच्या आकाराचे.

And our main idea was

अन् आमची मूळ कल्पना

to sort of sample the seven most significant mountains

अझरबैजानमधले सात महत्वाचे पर्वत निवडावेत

of the topography of Azerbaijan

आणि त्यांच्या आकाराचा पुनर्विचार करून

and reinterpret them into urban and architectural structures,

शहरी वास्तू उभाराव्यात ज्या

inhabitable of human life.

मानवी वसतीयोग्य असतील अशी होती.

Then we place these mountains on the island,

आणि या पर्वताच्या आकाराच्या वास्तू त्या बेटाच्या मध्यभागी

surrounding this sort of central green valley,

असलेल्या हिरव्या दरीच्या कडेने असाव्यात.

almost like a central park.

अगदी एखाद्या मध्यभागी असलेल्या उद्यानाप्रमाणे.

And what makes it interesting is that the island right now

आणि यातला गमतीचा भाग असा की याक्षणी हे बेट

is just a piece of desert. It has no vegetation.

केवळ एक वाळवंट आहे. तिथे तसूभरही हिरवळ नाही.

It has no water. It has no energy, no resources.

ना पाणी ना उर्जा ना काही संसाधन स्त्रोत.

So we actually sort of designed the entire island as a single ecosystem,

त्यामुळे आम्ही या संपूर्ण बेटावर एकच जैवपरिसंस्था बनवणार आहोत.

exploiting wind energy to drive the desalination plants,

वायूउर्जेचा वापर करून पाण्याचे नि:क्षारीकरण करणार आहोत

and to use the thermal properties of water

आणि पाण्याच्या औष्णिक तत्वांचा वापर करून

to heat and cool the buildings.

इमारतींचे वातानुकुलन करणार आहोत.

And all the sort of excess freshwater wastewater

आणि सर्व प्रकारचे जादा गोडे पाणी हे

is filtered organically into the landscape,

नैसर्गिकरीत्या गाळून बागकामासाठी वापरले जाईल.

gradually transforming the desert island

अन् हळूहळू या वाळवंटी बेटाचे

into sort of a green, lush landscape.

एका हिरव्यागार परिसरात रुपांतर होईल.

So, you can say where an urban development

म्हणजे तुम्ही म्हणू शकता की शहरी विकास

normally happens at the expense of nature,

जो सामन्यत: निसर्गासाठी हानीकारक ठरतो

in this case it's actually creating nature.

या ठिकाणी मात्र निसर्गाच्या वाढीस कारणीभूत ठरला आहे.

And the buildings, they don't only sort of

आणि या इमारती केवळ

invoke the imagery of the mountains,

पर्वताच्या आकाराच्या नाहीत

they also operate like mountains.

तर त्या पर्वतासारखे काम देखील करतात.

They create shelter from the wind.

त्या वाऱ्यापासून बचाव करतात.

They accumulate the solar energy.

त्या सौरउर्जा साठवून ठेवतात.

They accumulate the water.

त्या पाणी साठवतात.

So they actually transform the entire island

त्यामुळे त्या या संपूर्ण बेटाचे रूपांतर

into a single ecosystem.

एका जैवपरिसंस्थेमध्ये करतात.

So we recently presented the master plan,

आम्ही आत्ताच मुख्य आराखडा सादर केला.

and it has gotten approved.

आणि तो मान्य देखील झाला.

And this summer we are starting the construction documents

of the two first mountains,

in what's going to be the first carbon-neutral island

So in a way you can see how the Mountain in Copenhagen

sort of evolved into the Seven Peaks of Azerbaijan.

अझरबैजानच्या सात शिखरांमध्ये उत्क्रांत होत गेली.

With a little luck and some more evolution,

थोडसं नशीब आणि त्याहून थोडी अधिक उत्क्रांती

maybe in 10 years it could be the Five Mountains on Mars.

या दोन्हीमुळे कदाचित दहा वर्षांत मंगळावर पाच पर्वत देखील अशक्य नसेल!
