I'm here to talk about climate change,

but I'm not really an environmentalist.

I've lived my whole life in cities,

actually just one city.

And while I like to take trips to visit nature,

I always thought it was something that was happening elsewhere,

with all of modern life a fortress against its forces.

In other words,

like just about everybody I knew,

I lived my life complacent

about the threat from global warming.

Which I took to be happening slowly,

happening at a distance

and representing only a modest threat to the way that I lived.

In each of these ways,

I was very, very wrong.

Now most people, if they were telling you about climate change,

will tell you a story about the future.

چیڕۆكێكت بۆ باس ده‌كه‌ن ده‌رباره‌ی داهاتوو

If I was doing that, I would say,

ئه‌گه‌ر ئه‌وه‌م كردبا، دەمگوت،

"According to the UN, if we don't change course,

"به ‌گوێره‌ی قسه‌كانی یو ئێن ئه‌گه‌ر ڕێڕه‌وه‌كه‌ نه‌گۆڕین،

by the end of the century,

له ‌كۆتایی ئەم سەدەیەدا،

we're likely to get about four degrees Celsius of warming."

That would mean, some scientists believe,

twice as much war,

half as much food,

a global GDP possibly 20 percent smaller than it would be without climate change.

That's an impact that's deeper than the Great Depression,

and it would be permanent.

But the impacts are actually happening a lot faster than 2100.

By just 2050, it's estimated,

many of the biggest cities in South Asia and the Middle East

will be almost literally unlivably hot in summer.

These are cities that today are home to 10, 12, 15 million people.

And in just three decades,

you wouldn't be able to walk around outside in them

without risking heatstroke or possibly death.

The planet is now 1.1 degrees Celsius warmer

than it was before industrialization.

That may not sound like a lot,

له‌وانه‌یه‌ ئه‌مه‌ زۆر دیارنه‌بێ،

but it actually puts us entirely outside the window of temperatures

that enclose all of human history.

That means that everything we have ever known as a species,

the evolution of the human animal,

the development of agriculture,

the development of rudimentary civilization

and modern civilization and industrial civilization,

everything we know about ourselves as biological creatures,

هه‌موو ئه‌و شتانه‌ی كه‌ خۆمان ده‌یانزانین وه‌كو بوونه‌وه‌ری بایه‌لۆجیی،

as social creatures, as political creatures,

وه‌كو بوونه‌وه‌ری كۆمه‌ڵایه‌تیی، وه‌كو بوونه‌وه‌ری سیاسیی،

all of it is the result of climate conditions

هه‌مووی ئه‌نجامی حاڵه‌ته‌كانی كه‌ش و هه‌وایه‌

we have already left behind.

كه‌ پێشتر دوای خۆمان جێمانهێشتووه‌.

It's like we've landed on an entirely different planet,

وه‌كو ئه‌وه‌یه‌ له‌ هه‌ساره‌یه‌كی ته‌واو جیاواز نیشتووینه‌ته‌وه‌،

with an entirely different climate.

له‌گه‌ڵ كه‌ش و هه‌وایه‌كی ته‌واو جیاواز.

And we now have to figure out

what of the civilization that we've brought with us

چ شتێكی شارستانییه‌ت كه‌ له‌گه‌ڵ خۆمان هێناومانه‌

can endure these new conditions

ده‌توانێت به‌رگه‌ی ئه‌و حاڵه‌ته‌ نوێیانه‌ بگرێت

and what can't.

وكامه‌ی ناتوانێت .

And things will get worse from here.

لێره‌ به‌دواوه‌ شته‌كان به‌ره‌و خراپتر ده‌ڕوات.

Now for a very long time,

ئێستا بۆماوه‌یه‌كی زۆر،

we were told that climate change was a slow saga.

پێمان گوترابوو كه‌ گۆڕانی كه‌ش و هه‌وا چیڕۆكێكی كۆنی هێواشه‌.

It started with the industrial revolution,

له‌گه‌ڵ شۆڕشی پیشه‌سازی ده‌ستیپێكرد،

and it had fallen to us

كه‌وتۆته‌ سه‌رمان

to clean up the mess left by our grandparents

so our grandchildren wouldn't be dealing with the results.

It was a story of centuries.

In fact, half of all of the emissions

that have ever been produced from the burning of fossil fuels

كه‌وا له‌ ڕێی سووتاندنی سووته‌مه‌نی فۆسیلی به‌رهه‌م هاتووه‌

in the entire history of humanity

have been produced in just the last 30 years.

That's since Al Gore published his first book on warming.

It's since the UN established its IPCC climate change body.

له‌و كاته‌وه‌ی(یوئێن) پانێلی گۆڕانی كه‌ش و هه‌وای تایبه‌ت به‌خۆی دامه‌زراند.

We've done more damage since then

له‌و كاته‌وه‌ بووینه‌ هۆكاری زیانێكی زۆر

than in all the centuries, all the millennia before.

زیاترله‌هه‌موو سه‌ده‌كان‌، هه‌موو ئه‌وهه‌زاره‌ها ساڵه‌ی پێشتر،

Now I'm 37 years old,

من ئێستا 37 ساڵم،

which means my life contains this entire story.

When I was born, the planet's climate seemed stable.

Today,

we are on the brink of catastrophe.

ئێمه‌ له‌ قه‌راغی كاره‌ساته‌كه‌ین.

The climate crisis is not the legacy of our ancestors.

قه‌یرانی كه‌ش وهه‌وا له‌ باوانمانه‌وه‌ بۆمان به‌جێ نه‌ماوه‌.

It is the work of a single generation.

به‌ڵكو كاری تاكه‌ نه‌وه‌یه‌كه‌،

Ours.

كاری ئێمه‌یه‌.

This may all sound like bad news.

ئه‌مه‌ هه‌مووی له‌وانه‌یه‌ وه‌كو هه‌واڵی ناخۆش دیاربێت.

Which it is, really bad news.

كه‌ به‌ڕاستی هه‌واڵی ناخۆشن.

But it also contains, I think,

به‌ڵام وا بیرده‌كه‌مه‌وه‌ هه‌ندێك

some good news, at least relatively speaking.

هه‌ندێك هه‌واڵی خۆشیشی تێدایه‌، لانی كه‌م به‌ڕێژه‌یه‌كی به‌رچاو.

These impacts are terrifyingly large.

ئه‌م كاریگه‌رییانه‌ به‌ شێوه‌یه‌كی مه‌ترسیدار گه‌وره‌ن.

But they are also, I think, exhilarating.

به‌ڵام باوه‌ڕم وایه‌، دڵخۆشكه‌ریشن.

Because they are ultimately a reflection

چونكه‌ له‌ كۆتاییدا ئه‌وان ڕه‌نگدانه‌وه‌ی

of how much power we have over the climate.

چه‌ندێتی ئه‌و توانایه‌ن كه‌ هه‌مانه‌ له‌سه‌ر كه‌ش و هه‌وا.

If we get to those hellish scenarios,

ئه‌گه‌ر بگه‌ین به‌و سیناریۆ دۆزه‌خییانه‌،

it will be because we have made them happen,

له‌به‌ر ئه‌وه‌ ده‌بێت چونكه‌ خۆمان وامان كرد ڕووبدات،

because we have chosen to make them happen.

Which means we can choose to make other scenarios happen, too.

Now that may seem too rosy to believe

له‌وانه‌یه‌ ئه‌مه‌ هیوابه‌خش دیاربێت بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی باوه‌ڕی پێ بكه‌یت

and the political obstacles are in fact enormous.

وله‌ ڕاستیدا به‌ربه‌سته‌ سیاسییه‌كان زۆرگه‌وره‌ن.

But it is a simple fact --

the main driver of global warming is human action:

How much carbon we put into the atmosphere.

چه‌ند كاربۆن ده‌خه‌ینه‌ ناوبه‌رگه‌ هه‌وا.

Our hands are on those levers.

ده‌سته‌كانمان له‌سه‌ر ئه‌و به‌رزكه‌ره‌وانه‌یه‌.

And we can write the story of the planet's climate future ourselves.

ده‌توانین بۆخۆمان چیڕۆكی داهاتووی كه‌ش و هه‌وای هه‌ساره‌كه‌ بنووسینه‌وه‌.

Not just can -- but are.

نه‌ك ته‌نیا ده‌توانرێ--به‌ڵكو ئاوایه‌.

Since inaction is a kind of action,

له‌به‌رئه‌وه‌ی ته‌مبه‌ڵی جۆرێكه‌ له‌ كردار

we'll be writing that story ourselves whether we like it or not.

This is not just any story,

all of us holding the future of the planet in our hands.

It's the kind of story we used to recognize only in mythology

and theology.

A single generation

تاكه‌ نه‌وه‌یه‌ك

that has brought the future of humanity into doubt

now tasked with securing a new future.

So what would that look like?

It could mean solar arrays barnacling the planet,

ده‌كرێت مانای ئه‌وه‌ بدات ده‌سته‌ی خۆری چاره‌سه‌ری هه‌ساره‌كه‌ بكات،

really everywhere you looked.

به‌ڕاستی هه‌موو شوێنێك كه‌ بۆی گه‌ڕان.

It could mean if we developed better technology,

we wouldn't even need to deploy them that broadly,

because it's been estimated that just a sliver of the Sahara desert

absorbs enough solar power to provide all the world's energy needs.

But we'd probably need a new electric grid,

one that doesn't lose two-thirds of its power to waste heat,

as is today the case in the US.

We could use some more nuclear power, perhaps,

although it would have to be an entirely different kind of nuclear power,

because today's technology simply isn't cost-competitive

with renewable energy whose costs are falling so rapidly.

We'd need a new kind of plane,

because I don't think it's particularly practical

to ask the entire world to give up on air travel,

We need planes that won't produce carbon.

We need a new kind of agriculture.

Because we probably can't ask people to entirely give up on meat and go vegan,

it would mean a new way of raising beef.

can turn cattle farms

from what are called carbon sources, which produce CO2,

into carbon sinks, which absorb them.

If you prefer a techno solution,

maybe we can grow some of that mean in the lab.

Probably, we could also feed some real cattle seaweed,

because that cuts their methane emissions by as much as 95 or 99 percent.

Probably, we'd have to do all of these things,

And no matter how many solutions we deploy,

we probably won't be able to decarbonize in time.

That's the terrifying math that we face.

We won't be able to beat climate change,

only live with it and limit it.

And that means we'd probably need

some amount of what are called negative emissions,

which take carbon out of the atmosphere as well.

Billions of new trees, maybe trillions of new trees.

And whole plantations of carbon-capture machines.

Perhaps an industry twice or four times the size

of today's oil and gas business

to undo the damage that was done by those businesses in past decades.

-بۆ چاككردنی ئه‌و زیانانه‌ی كه‌ ئه‌و كۆمپا نیایانه‌ له‌ ده‌یه‌كانی ڕابردوو كردوویانه‌

We would need a new kind of infrastructure,

پێویستیمان به‌ جۆرێكی نوێی ژێرخان ده‌بێت،

poured by a different kind of cement,

به‌ جۆرێكی نوێی چیمه‌نتۆ ئاوبدرێت،

because today, if cement were a country,

چونكه‌ ئه‌مڕۆ، گه‌ر چیمه‌نتۆ وڵاتێك بوایه‌

it would be the world's third biggest emitter.

ده‌بووه‌ سێ یه‌مین گه‌وره‌ترین نارده‌ له‌ جیهان

And China is pouring as much cement every three years

وچین ئه‌وه‌نده‌ چیمه‌نتۆ ده‌ڕێژێت هه‌موو سێ ساڵ جارێك

as the US poured in the entire 20th century.

كه‌ ویلایه‌ته‌ یه‌كگرتووه‌كان به‌ درێژایی سه‌ده‌ی بیسته‌م ڕژاندی.

We would need to build seawalls and levees

پێویستمان به‌ دروستكردنی دیواری ده‌ریایی و به‌نده‌ر ده‌بێت

to protect those people living on the coast,

بۆ پاراستنی ئه‌و خه‌ڵكه‌ی كه‌ له‌ كه‌ناره‌كان ده‌ژین،

many of whom are too poor to build them today,

زۆربه‌ی ئه‌وانه‌ی كه‌ زۆر هه‌ژارن و ناتوانن ئه‌مڕۆ دروستی بكه‌ن،

which is why it must mean an end to a narrowly nationalistic geopolitics

له‌به‌ر ئه‌وه‌یه‌ پێویسته‌ مانای كۆتایی جیۆپۆله‌تیكێكی به‌رته‌سكی نه‌ته‌وه‌یی

that allows us to define the suffering of those living elsewhere in the world

بێت كه‌ ڕێگامان پێده‌دات به‌ دیاریكردنی ئازاره‌كانی ئه‌و كەسانه‌ی له‌ شوێنی تر

له‌و جیهانه‌ ده‌ژین وه‌كو ئه‌وه‌ی بێبایه‌خ بن،

as insignificant,

when we even acknowledge it.

كاتێك دانی پێداده‌نێین.

This better future won't be easy.

ئه‌م داهاتووه‌ باشتره‌ ئاسان نابێت.

But the only obstacles are human ones.

به‌ڵام ته‌نیا كۆسپه‌كان مرۆڤه‌كانن.

That may not be much of a comfort,

له‌وانه‌یه‌ ئه‌وه‌ ئاسووده‌به‌خش نه‌بێت.

if you know what I know about human brutality and indifference,

ئه‌گه‌ر ئه‌وه‌ بزانن كه‌ من ده‌یزانم له‌ باره‌ی دڕنده‌یی مرۆڤ و گوێ پێنه‌دانه‌كانی

but I promise you, it is better than the alternative.

به‌ڵام به‌ڵێنتان پێ ده‌ده‌م، ئه‌مه‌ باشتره‌ له‌ جێگره‌كه‌ی.

Science isn't stopping us from taking action,

زانست ڕێمان لی ناگرێت له‌ ئه‌نجامدانی كاره‌كان،

and neither is technology.

ته‌كنه‌لۆژیاش هه‌مان شت.

We have the tools we need today to begin.

ئه‌وئامرازانه‌مان هه‌یه‌ كه‌ ئه‌مڕۆ پێویستمانه‌ ده‌ستی پێبكه‌ین.

Of course, we also have the tools we need to end global poverty,

ئه‌و ئامرازانه‌شمان هه‌یه‌ كه‌بۆ كۆتایی هێنانی هه‌ژاریی جیهانیی پێویستمانه‌،

epidemic disease

نه‌خۆشیی درم

and the abuse of women as well.

به‌هه‌مان شێوه‌ توندووتیژیی دژی ئافره‌تان.

Which is why more than new tools, we need a new politics,

له‌به‌ر ئه‌مه‌یه‌ زیاتر له‌ ئامرازی نوێ، پێویستیمان به‌ سیاسه‌تی نوێ یه‌،

a way of overcoming all those human obstacles --

ڕێگایه‌ك بۆ زاڵبوون به‌سه‌ر هه‌مووئه‌وكۆسپانه‌ی مرۆڤ--

our culture, our economics,

كلتوورمان، ئابووریمان،

our status quo bias,

دۆخی ئێستامان،

our disinterest in taking seriously anything that really scares us.

بایه‌خ نه‌دانمان له‌ به‌هه‌ند وه‌رگرتنی هه‌موو ئه‌و شتانه‌ی كه‌ ده‌مانترسێنێت.

Our shortsightedness.

نزیك بینیمان.

Our sense of self-interest.

هه‌ستی به‌رژه‌وه‌ندیی خۆییمان.

And the selfishness of the world's rich and powerful

و خۆپه‌رستیی ده‌وڵه‌مه‌ندو زلهێزه‌كانی جیهان

who have the least incentive to change anything.

كه‌وا كه‌مترین كاریگه‌رییان هه‌یه‌ له‌گۆڕینی هه‌رشتێك.

Now, they will suffer too,

ئه‌وانیش ئه‌مڕۆ ئازار ده‌چێژن،

but not as much as those with the least,

به‌ڵام نه‌ك هێنده‌ی ئه‌وانه‌ی كه‌مترینن

who have done the least to produce warming

كه‌وا كه‌مترین هه‌وڵیان داوه‌ له‌ به‌رهه‌مهێنانی گه‌رمیی

and have benefited the least

و كه‌مترین سوودیان بینیوه‌

from the processes that have brought us to this crisis point

له‌و پڕۆسانه‌ی كه‌وا ئێمه‌یان گه‌یاندۆته‌ ئه‌و خاڵه‌ی قه‌یرانه‌

but will be burdened most in the decades ahead.

به‌ڵام ده‌بێته‌ زۆرترین بارگرانیی له‌ ده‌یه‌كانی داهاتوو.

A new politics

سیاسه‌تێكی نوێ

would make the matter of managing that burden,

كێشه‌ی به‌ڕێوه‌بردنی ئه‌وبارگرانییه‌،

where it falls and how heavily,

كه‌ ده‌كه‌وێت و چه‌ند به‌ به‌هێزی،

the top priority of our time.

ده‌كاته‌ گرنگترین باسی سه‌رده‌مه‌كه‌مان.

No matter what we do, climate change will transform modern life.

گرنگ نییه‌ چی ده‌كه‌ین، گۆڕانی كه‌شوهه‌وا ژیانی سه‌رده‌مییانه‌ ده‌گۆڕێت.

Some amount of warming is already baked in and is inevitable,

هه‌ندێك بڕی گه‌رمیی به‌ڕاستی برژاوه‌ ده‌ربازبوون نییه‌ لێی،

which means probably some amount of additional suffering is, too.

به‌مانای هه‌ندێك بڕی زیاتری ئازارچه‌شتن هه‌روه‌ها.

ته‌نانه‌ت ئه‌گه‌ر هه‌ڵسین به‌ لێكۆڵینه‌وه‌ی دراماتیكی

And even if we take dramatic action

and avoid some of these truly terrifying worst-case scenarios,

دووربكه‌وینه‌وه‌ له‌ هه‌ندێك له‌و سیناریۆ ته‌واو ترسناكانه‌،

it would mean living on an entirely different planet.

ئه‌مه‌ مانای ئه‌وه‌ ده‌بێت له‌ هه‌ساره‌یه‌كی ته‌واو جیاواز بژین.

With a new politics, a new economics,

له‌گه‌ڵ سیاسه‌تێكی نوێ، ئابووری یه‌كی نوێ،

a new relationship to technology

په‌یوه‌ندییه‌كی نوێ بۆ ته‌كنه‌لۆژیا

and a new relationship to nature --

په‌یوه‌ندییه‌كی نوێ بۆ سروشت--

a whole new world.

جیهانێكی ته‌واو جیاواز.

But a relatively livable one.

به‌ڵام ڕێژه‌ییانه‌ شایه‌نی ژیان بێت.

Relatively prosperous.

ڕێژه‌ییانه‌ سه‌ركه‌وتوو.

And green.

وسه‌وز بێت.

Why not choose that one?
