I feel incredibly lucky

In 1975, when I was seven years old,

women in Iceland went on a strike.

아이슬란드 여자들이 파업에 돌입했습니다.

They did no work that day,

그날 여자들은 일하지 않았어요.

whether they held professional jobs

전문직을 가진 여성이거나

or had the work of the home.

집안 일을 하는 여성이거나 상관 없이요.

They marched into the center of Reykjavík --

여자들이 수도 레이캬비크 한복판으로 행진해 들어갔습니다.

90 percent of women participated --

90%의 여자들이 참여하여

and peacefully and in solidarity

평화롭게 서로 하나되어

asked for equality.

평등을 외쳤습니다.

Nothing worked in Iceland that day,

그날 아이슬란드에는 제대로 돌아가는 일이 없었습니다.

because nothing works when women are not at work.

여자들이 일을 안 하는데, 되는 일이 없는 게 당연하죠.

Five years later, Icelanders had the courage

5년 뒤 아이슬랜드 사람들은

to be the first country in the world

세계 최초로 민주적 선거를 통해

to democratically elect a woman as their president.

여성을 대통령으로 선출하는 용기를 냅니다.

I will never forget this day,

결코 잊을 수 없는 날이에요.

that President Vigdís, as we know her by her first name,

싱글 맘 비그디스 대통령이 자기 딸과 함께

stepped out on the balcony of her own home,

자기 집 발코니에 나와 서서 손을 흔듭니다.

a single mom with her daughter by her side as she had won.

그날 대통령으로 선출되었거든요.

This woman was an incredible role model

이 여성은 당시에 자라나던

for me and everyone growing up at that time,

저를 비롯한 모든 아이들에게 훌륭한 귀감이었습니다.

including boys.

남자애들에게도요.

She frequently shares the story of how a young boy approached her

그분이 자주 들려주던 이야기가 있었어요 두세 번째 임기를 마칠 무렵이었답니다.

after a couple of terms in office

어린 소년이 다가와서 묻습니다.

and asked, "Can boys really grow up to be president?"

"남자 아이들도 자라서 대통령이 될 수 있나요?"

Role models really matter,

역할 모델은 매우 중요합니다.

but even with such strong role models

그런데 이렇게 강력한 역할 모델을 두는

who I am so grateful for,

행운을 누리면서도,

when I was encouraged to run for president,

대통령에 출마하라고 사람들이 제게 용기를 주었을 때

my first reaction was, "Who am I to run for president?

처음 저는 이렇게 반응하였습니다 "내가 누군데 대통령에 출마하지?"

Who am I to be president?"

"대통령에 출마할 만한 사람일까?"

It turns out that women

알고 보니 여자들은 남자들에 비해

are less likely to consider running than men.

공직에 출마할 생각을 하는 사람이 적다고 합니다

So a study done in the US in 2011

2011년 미국에서 수행한 한 연구에서

showed that 62 percent of men had considered running for office,

남자들의 62퍼센트가 공직에 출마할까 생각해 본 반면

but 45 percent of women.

여자들은 고작 45%였답니다.

That's gap of 16 percentage points,

16% 포인트나 차이가 납니다.

and it's the same gap that existed a decade earlier.

And it really is a shame,

매우 부끄러운 일이지요.

because I am so convinced that the world is in real need for women leaders

지금 세계는 여성 리더들, 그리고 원칙에 좀더 충실할 리더들이

and more principle-based leadership

절실히 필요로 하다고

in general.

확신하기 때문입니다.

So my decision to run

따라서 대통령에 출마하겠다는 제 결정을

ultimately came down to the fact

한 마디로 요약해 본다면

that I felt

내가 뭔가 해야 한다고

that I had to do my bit,

느꼈기 때문입니다.

even if I had no political experience,

비록 정치적 경험은 전혀 없지만

to step up and try to be part of creating the world

자리에서 일어나 이 세상을 개선하는 일에 동참하고 싶었습니다.

that will make sense and be sustainable

우리 아이들이 상식이 통하고

for our kids,

지속 가능한 가능한 세계에서 살기를

and a world where we truly allow both our boys and girls

남자 아이와 여자 아이 모두 진정으로 마음껏 꿈을 펼칠 수 있는

to be all they can be.

세계에서 살기를 바랬던 겁니다.

And it was the journey of my life.

이것은 제 일생일대의 여행이 되었습니다.

It was amazing.

참 짜릿한 일이었습니다.

The journey started with potentially as many as 20 candidates.

이 여행은 스무 명의 후보와 함께 출발하였습니다.

It boiled down to nine candidates qualifying,

얼마 후 아홉 명의 적격자로 압축되었고

and ultimately the race came down to four of us,

최종 경선에는 저희 네 명이 남았습니다.

three men and me.

남자 셋 그리고 저였습니다.

But that's not all the drama yet.

하지만 드라마는 아직 시작도 안 했어요.

You may think you have drama in the US,

미국에서 드라마가 상연 중이겠지만

but I can --

하지만 저는

(Laughter)

I can assure you we had our own drama in Iceland.

저는 분명히 말씀드릴 수 있어요. 아이슬란드에 우리만의 드라마가 있었어요.

So our sitting president of 20 years

20년 간 재임한 저희 현직 대통령은

announced initially that he was not going to run,

처음에 출마하지 않겠다고 발표했었습니다.

which is probably what gave rise

아마 그래서 그렇게 많은 후보들이

to so many candidates considering running.

출마를 결심한 것 같습니다.

Then later he changed his mind

하지만 총리가 불명예스러운

when our prime minister resigned

파나마 페이퍼스에

following the infamous Panama Papers

가족까지 연루되어 사임한 이후

that implicated him and his family.

대통령은 마음을 바꿉니다.

And there was a popular protest in Iceland,

아이슬란드에서 대중 시위가 일어났습니다.

so the sitting president thought they needed a trusted leader.

현직 대통령은 국민들에게 신뢰받는 지도자가 필요하다고 생각합니다.

A few days later, relations to his wife and her family's companies

were also discovered in the Panama Papers,

and so he withdrew from the race again.

Before doing so, he said he was doing that

So it would be an understatement to say that I had to work extremely hard

because the network decided that they would only include

I found out on the afternoon of the first TV debate

that I would participate along with the three men,

and I found out on live TV

that I came in at exactly 2.5 percent on the day of the first TV debate.

So, challenges.

이제, 힘든 점을 얘기하죠.

The foremost challenges I had to face and overcome on this journey

이 여정에서 부딪쳐서 극복해야 했던 가장 높은 장벽 세 가지는

had to do with media, muscle and money.

미디어, 세력, 금전입니다.

Let's start with media.

미디어부터 이야기해 보죠.

There are those who say gender doesn't matter

미디어와 정치에서 성별은 중요하지 않다고

when it comes to media and politics.

말하는 사람들이 있습니다.

I can't say that I agree.

제 생각은 다릅니다.

It proved harder for me to both get access and airtime in media.

미디어에 접근하고 실제 방송을 타기가 저에게는 실제로 어려웠습니다.

As a matter of fact, the leading candidate appeared in broadcast media

사실 선거전에 돌입 후 주요 후보들은

87 times in the months leading up to the elections,

87번 방송을 탔는데 반해

whereas I appeared 31 times.

저는 31번 방송을 탔습니다.

And I am not saying media is doing this consciously.

미디어가 의식적으로 이렇게 했다는 말은 아닙니다.

I think largely this has to do with unconscious bias,

이것은 무의식적인 편견과 더 큰 관련이 있는 것 같습니다.

because in media, much like everywhere else,

다른 것과 마찬가지로, 미디어에 내에서도

we have both conscious and unconscious bias,

의식적, 무의식적 편견이 모두 존재하니까요.

and we need to have the courage to talk about it if we want to change it.

When I finally got access to TV,

내가 마침내 TV와 연결이 되었을 때

the first question I got was, "Are you going to quit?"

첫 질문이 이거였습니다. "그만 둘 거예요?"

And that was a hard one.

But of course, with 1 percent to 2.5 percent in the polls,

maybe it's understandable.

But media really matters, and every time I appeared on TV,

we saw and experienced a rise in the polls,

so I know firsthand how much this matters

I was the only one out of the final four candidates

that never got a front page interview.

I was sometimes left out of the questions asked of all other candidates

and out of coverage about the elections.

So I did face this,

but I will say this to compliment the Icelandic media.

I got few if any comments about my hair and pantsuit.

제가 가끔 언급되기도 했어요. 헤어 스타일과 옷차림에 대해서요.

So kudos to them.

그래서 고맙다고요.

But there is another experience that's very important.

다른 중요한 경험이 또 있습니다.

I ran as an independent candidate,

저는 다른 정당에 속하거나

not with any political party or muscle behind me.

세력을 업지 않고 독립 후보로 출마했습니다.

That lack of experience

그런 경험의 부족과

and lack of access to resources

자원을 끌어올 데가 없다는 것은

probably came at a cost to our campaign,

저희 캠페인이 대가를 치러야 했겠죠.

but it also allowed us to innovate and do politics differently.

하지만 덕분에 저희는 정치를 새롭고 다른 방법으로 할 수 있었습니다.

We ran a positive campaign,

저희는 긍정적인 캠페인을 펼쳤고요.

and we probably changed the tone of the election for others by doing that.

It may be the reason why I had less airtime on TV,

because I wanted to show other contenders respect.

When access to media proved to be so difficult,

미디어 접근이 어렵게 되었을 때

we ran our own media.

우리는 우리만의 미디어를 열었습니다.

I ran live Facebook sessions

실시간 페이스북 세션을 열어서

where I took questions from voters on anything and responded on the spot.

어떤 주제이든 유권자들의 질문을 즉석에서 받아 답해 주었습니다

And we put all the questions I got and all the answers on an open Facebook

제가 받은 모든 질문과 답변을 페이스북에 공개했습니다.

because we thought transparency is important

신뢰를 쌓고 싶다면 투명해야 한다고

if you want to establish trust.

믿었기 때문입니다.

And when reaching young voters proved to be challenging,

젊은 유권자들에게 다가가는 것은 확실히 어려웠습니다.

I became a Snapchatter.

저는 스냅채터가 됐죠.

I got young people to teach me how to do that,

사용법을 젊은 사람들에게 배웠고요.

and I used every filter on Snapchat during the last part of the campaign.

캠페인 막바지에는 스냅챗 모든 필터를 썼습니다.

And I actually had to use a lot of humor and humility, as I was very bad at it.

농담도 하고 망가지기도 해야 했습니다 저는 정말 소질이 없더군요.

But we grew the following amongst young people by doing that.

그래도 젊은 팔로어들이 늘어났습니다.

So it's possible to run a different type of campaign.

캠페인을 다른 방식으로 할 수 있다는 이야기였습니다.

But unfortunately, one cannot talk about politics without mentioning money.

하지만 안타깝게도 돈을 빼놓고는 정치를 얘기할 수 없습니다.

I am sad that it is that way, but it's true,

정치가 그렇다는 게 슬프지만 사실입니다.

and we had less financial resources than the other candidates.

저희는 다른 후보들보다 금전적 자원이 적었습니다.

This probably was partly due to the fact

부분적으로는 금전적 지원 요청을

that I think I had a harder time asking for financial support.

제가 어려워했기 때문입니다.

And maybe I also had the ambition to do more with less.

돈을 많이 안 쓰고 더 잘 해보려는 욕심도 있었던 것 같고요.

Some would call that very womanly of me.

이것이 저의 매우 여성적인 면이라고 말하는 사람도 있습니다.

But even with one third the media, one third the financial resources,

and only an entrepreneurial team, but an amazing team,

we managed to surprise everyone on election night,

when the first numbers came in.

I surprised myself, as you may see in that photo.

(Laughter)

So the first numbers,

자, 첫 개표 결과

I came in neck to neck to the leading candidate.

저는 유력 후보와 거의 대등한 표를 얻었습니다.

(Cheers)

Well, too early, because I didn't quite pull that,

아직이요. 정상을 확실히 찍은 건 아니니까요.

but I came in second,

그래도 2위를 차지했죠.

and we went a long way from the one percent,

1%로 출발해서 우리는 거의 1/3 득표라는

with nearly a third of the vote,

꽤 먼 지점까지 여행했습니다.

and we beat the polls by an unprecedented margin,

여론 조사보다 유례 없이 많은 득표를 얻었고요.

or 10 percentage points above what the last poll came in at.

마지막 여론 조사 대비 10% 포인트 큰 득표였죠.

Some people call me the real winner of the election because of this,

and there are many people who encouraged me to run again.

또 여러 분들이 다시 출마하라고 격려해 주십니다.

But what really makes me proud

하지만 제가 진짜 자랑스러운 것은

is to know that I earned

제가 젊은 층에서

proportionately higher percentage support from the young people,

상대적으로 높은 득표를 얻었다는 사실과

and a lot of people encouraged my daughter to run in 2040.

많은 분들이 제 딸에게 2040년 출마를 격려하셨다는 것입니다.

She is 13,

제 딸은 열세 살이고요.

and she had never been on TV before.

TV에 한 번도 나간 적이 없습니다.

And on election day, I observed her on TV repeatedly,

선거 당일, 딸애가 TV에 나온 걸 여러 번 봤는데

and she was smart, she was self-confident,

똑똑하고 자신감이 넘쳤습니다.

she was sincere, and she was supportive of her mother.

그 애는 진실했고, 엄마에게 든든한 지지자였습니다.

This was probably the highlight of my campaign.

아마 이것이 제 캠페인의 하이라이트였던 것 같습니다.

But there was another one.

여기서 끝이 아닙니다

These are preschool girls out on a walk,

산책을 나온 유치원 여자 아이들이

and they found a poster of me on a bus stop,

버스 정류장에서 제 포스터를 보았고요.

and they saw the need to kiss it.

포스터에 뽀뽀를 하고 싶었던 거예요.

Audience: Aw!

관중: 아!

This picture was really enough of a win for me.

이 사진이 제게는 이긴 거나 다름 없습니다.

What we see, we can be.

본다면 해낼 수 있습니다.

So screw fear and challenges.

그러니 두려움과 어려움은 던져 버리세요.

(Applause)

It matters that women run,

여성이 출마하는 것이 중요합니다.

and it's time for women to run for office,

이제는 여성들이 공직에 나와야 하고

be it the office of the CEO or the office of the president.

CEO나 대통령 자리에 올라야 합니다.

I also managed to put an impression on your very own "New Yorker."

저는 미국 잡지 "뉴요커"에 실리기도 했습니다.

I earned a new title, "A living emoji of sincerity."

"진심을 보여주는 살아있는 이모티콘" 이라는 새 별명을 얻었죠.

(Cheers)

(환호성)

It is possibly my proudest title yet,

지금까지는 제게 가장 자랑스러운 별명일 겁니다.

and the reason is that women too often get penalized

여자들은 제가 정서적 자산이라고 부르는 것을 사용한 대가로

for using what I call their emotional capital,

너무도 자주 불리는 처벌을 받잖아요.

but I know from experience that we become so good

하지만 저는 경험으로 알거든요 우리는 정서적 자산을 쓸 때

when we do just that.

뛰어난 능력을 발휘합니다.

And we need more of that.

우리는 그것을 더 해야 합니다.

We celebrated as if we had won on election night,

because that's how we felt.

So you don't necessarily have to reach that office.

그 자리에 꼭 오를 필요는 없습니다.

You just have to go for it,

그냥 그 자리를 향해서 도약하면 됩니다.

and you, your family, your friends, everyone working with you,

여러분이 가족, 친구, 함께 하는 모든 사람과

if you do it well, you will grow beyond anything you will experience before.

훌륭히 해낸다면, 현재 경험한 것 이상으로 성장할 것입니다.

So we had a good time,

저희에게는 참 좋은 경험이었죠.

and I learned a lot on this journey,

그리고 참 많이 배웠습니다.

probably more lessons than I can share here

제가 배운 것을 지금 이 자리에서

in the time we have today.

모두 나눌 수는 없겠지요.

But rest assured, it was hard work.

하지만 힘들었다는 것은 확실합니다.

I lost a lot of sleep during those months.

그 기간 동안 잠도 제대로 못 잤죠.

It took resilience and perseverance to not quit,

포기라는 유혹을 이기려면 탄력성과 끈기를 발휘해야 했습니다.

but I learned something that I knew before on the one percent day,

하지만 1%를 받았을 때, 저도 모르게 배운 것이 있습니다.

and that is that you can only be good

우리가 무엇을 잘 하려면

when you are truly, authentically listening to your own voice

진정으로, 솔직하게 자신의 목소리에 귀 기울이고

and working in alignment with that.

그에 따라 일해야 한다는 것입니다.

As a good sister of mine sometimes says,

제 언니가 가끔 하는 말이 있어요.

you may cheat on your intuition,

직감을 속이려고 하더라도

but your intuition never cheats on you.

직감은 결코 거짓말을 하지 않는다.

I think it's also very important, and you all know this,

모두 아는 얘기이겠지만 중요한 게 있습니다.

that on any journey you go on,

어떤 여행을 시작하더라도

it's the team you take along.

팀과 함께하는 걸 잊지 마세요.

It's having people around you who share your values, your vision,

이것은 가치와 비전을 나눈 사람들과 함께 하는 일입니다.

but are different in every other way.

단, 수없이 다른 방법으로요.

That's the formula for success for me,

그것이 저에게 성공 공식이었고

and I am blessed with an amazing husband,

이 자리에서 감사드리고 싶습니다.

here today,

정말 멋진 남편과

an incredible family --

비교할 수 없는 가족과

and great friends,

훌륭한 친구들과

and we came together as entrepreneurs in the political arena,

and pulled something off that everyone said would be impossible.

As a matter of fact, the leading PR expert told me

사실, 유수한 PR 전문가는 제가 결정을 내리기 전에

before I made my decision

7%만 받아도 잘 하는 거라고

that I would do well to get seven percent.

얘기했었습니다.

I appreciated his perspective, because he was probably right,

의견을 주셔서 감사했습니다. 옳은 말씀이었고

and he was basing it on valuable experience.

소중한 경험에서 나온 것이었으니까요.

But on the one percent day,

하지만 1%를 받던 날

I decided here to show him that he was wrong.

저는 그분이 틀렸다는 것을 보여주기로 결심했습니다.

It's very important to mention this, because I did lose a lot of sleep,

이 말씀을 꼭 드려야 겠어요. 잠을 못 이루며 열심히 일했고

and I worked hard, and so did the people with me.

다른 팀원들도 마찬가지로 열심히 했기 때문이죠.

We can never go the distance if we forget to take care of ourselves.

우리가 자신을 챙기지 않는다면 우리는 멀리 갈 수 없습니다.

And it's two things that I think are very important in that,

그래서 제가 매우 중요하게 여기는 두 가지가 있습니다.

in surrounding yourself with people and practices that nourish you,

but it's equally important, maybe even more important,

to have the courage to get rid of people and practices

that take away your energy,

including the wonderful bloggers and commentators.

I took a lot of support from others in doing this,

and I made the decision to go high when others went low,

and that's partly how I kept my energy going throughout all of this.

And when I lost my energy for a moment --

and I did from time to time, it wasn't easy --

I went back to why I decided to run,

and how I had decided to run my own race.

I called it a 4G campaign,

the G's representing the Icelandic words.

각 G는 아이슬란드 단어를 뜻하는데요.

And the first one is called "Gagn."

첫 번째는 '각 (Gagn)'입니다.

I ran to do good,

저는 좋은 일을 하고

to be of service,

봉사하려고 출마한 것이며

and I wanted servant leadership

섬김의 리더십이 제 일하는 방식과

to be at the center of how I worked and everybody else in the campaign.

캠페인에 참가한 모든 사람들의 중심이 되기를 바랐습니다.

Second one is "Gleði," or joy.

두 번째는 '글레디(Gleði)' 또는 기쁨입니다.

I decided to enjoy the journey.

전 이 여정을 즐기기로 결심했습니다.

There was a lot to be taken out of the journey,

여행에서 얻을 수 있는 즐거움은 참 많았습니다.

no matter if the destination was reached or not.
