Now, I am not one of those people.

I really love insects.

I think they're interesting and beautiful,

and sometimes even cute.

And I'm not alone.

Well, why is that?

What is that keeps us coming back to insects?

Some of it, of course, is just the sheer magnitude of almost everything about them.

They're more numerous than any other kind of animal.

We don't even know how many species of insects there are,

because new ones are being discovered all the time.

There are at least a million, maybe as many as 10 million.

This means that you could have an insect-of-the-month calendar

and not have to reuse a species for over 80,000 years.

More seriously, insects are essential.

좀 더 진지하게 생각해보면, 곤충은 우리 삶에 필수적인 존재입니다.

We need them.

곤충이 있어야 합니다.

It's been estimated that 1 out of every 3 bites of food

대략 우리가 먹는 음식 중 3분의 1은

is made possible by a pollinator.

꽃가루 매개 곤충에 의해 만들어 진 것들입니다.

Scientist use insects to make fundamental discoveries

과학자들은 곤충을 통해 인간의 신경계 구조부터

about everything from the structure of our nervous systems

to how our genes and DNA work.

But what I love most about insects

is what they can tell us about our own behavior.

Insects seem like they do everything that people do.

They meet, they mate, they fight, they break up.

And they do so with what looks like love or animosity.

But what drives their behaviors is really different than what drives our own,

and that difference can be really illuminating.

There's nowhere where that's more true

than when it comes to one of our most consuming interests -- sex.

Now, I will maintain. and I think I can defend,

what may seem like a surprising statement.

And the wild variety that we see

makes us challenge some of our own assumptions

about what it means to be male and female.

Of course, to start with,

a lot of insects don't need to have sex at all to reproduce.

Female aphids can make little, tiny clones of themselves without ever mating.

When they do have sex,

even their sperm is more interesting than human sperm.

There are some kinds of fruit flies

초파리 중에는

whose sperm is longer than the male's own body.

자신의 몸길이보다 더 긴 정자를 가진 놈도 있습니다.

And that's important because the males use their sperm to compete.

정자의 길이를 두고 수컷끼리 우열을 겨루기 때문에 중요합니다.

Now, male insects do compete with weapons, like the horns on these beetles.

딱정벌레에게서 볼 수 있는 뿔 같은 무기로 우열을 가리기도 하지만

But they also compete after mating with their sperm.

하지만 일단 정자로 짝짓기를 한 뒤 그 우열을 가릅니다.

Dragonflies and damselflies have penises that look kind of like Swiss Army knives

잠자리나 실잠자리의 성기는 꼭 맥가이버 칼처럼 생겼습니다.

그 안의 각종 칼날이 뻗어 나온 모양을 하고 말입니다.

with all of the attachments pulled out.

(Laughter)

They use these formidable devices like scoops,

to remove the sperm from previous males that the female has mated with.

(Laughter)

So, what can we learn from this?

All right, it is not a lesson in the sense of us imitating them

or of them setting an example for us to follow.

Which, given this, is probably just as well.

And also, did I mention sexual cannibalism is rampant among insects?

So, no, that's not the point.

But what I think insects do,

is break a lot of the rules that we humans have about the sex roles.

So, people have this idea that nature dictates kind of a 1950s sitcom version

of what males and females are like.

남자는 이렇고 여자는 저래야 한다고 생각합니다.

So that males are always supposed to be dominant and aggressive,

and females are passive and coy.

But that's just not the case.

So for example, take katydids,

which are relatives of crickets and grasshoppers.

The males are very picky about who they mate with,

because they not only transfer sperm during mating,

they also give the female something called a nuptial gift.

In both panels, the male's the one on the right,

and that sword-like appendage is the female's egg-laying organ.

The white blob is the sperm,

the green blob is the nuptial gift,

and the male manufactures this from his own body

and it's extremely costly to produce.

It can weigh up to a third of his body mass.

I will now pause for a moment and let you think about

what it would be like if human men, every time they had sex,

Okay, they would not be able to do that very often.

And indeed, neither can the katydids.

And so what that means

Now, the gift is very nutritious,

So, the bigger it is, the better off the male is,

So, it's not exactly a stereotypical set of rules.

Even more generally though,

males are actually not all that important in the lives of a lot of insects.

In the social insects -- the bees and wasps and ants --

the individuals that you see every day --

all of those are always female.

People have had a hard time getting their head around that idea for millennia.

The ancient Greeks knew that there was a class of bees, the drones,

that are larger than the workers,

although they disapproved of the drones' laziness

because they could see that the drones just hang around the hive

until the mating flight --

they're the males.

수컷이면서도 하는 일이 없어요.

They hang around until the mating flight,

but they don't participate in gathering nectar or pollen.

꽃가루나 과일즙을 나르는 일없이 놉니다.

그리스인들은 이 수벌의 성별을 알아내지 못했습니다.

The Greeks couldn't figure out the drones' sex,

and part of the confusion was that they were aware of the stinging ability of bees

혼란스웠던 이유는 벌에게 침이 있는 것은 알고 있었는데

but they found it difficult to believe

that any animals that bore such a weapon could possibly be a female.

Aristotle tried to get involved as well.

He suggested, "OK, if the stinging individuals are going to be the males ..."

그가 말을 꺼내길, "만약 침이 있는 것이 수컷이라면,"

Then he got confused, because that would have meant

the males were also taking care of the young in a colony,

and he seemed to think that would be completely impossible.

And when I tell them that the ferocious army-ant soldiers

they seem to not quite believe me.

And certainly all of the movies -- Antz, Bee Movie --

특히 개미나 벌을 주제로 한 대다수의 영화들이

portray the main character in the social insects as being male.

곤충 주인공 캐릭터를 남성으로 표현합니다.

그게 여성이라면 무슨 차이가 있겠냐고요?

Well, what difference does this make?

These are movies. They're fiction.

그냥 영화일 뿐이고 지어낸 이야기에

They have talking animals in them.

영화니까 동물들이 사람처럼 말도 하는데

What difference does it make if they talk like Jerry Seinfeld?

제리 싸인필드(미국 남자 코미디언) 처럼 말하든 무슨 상관이냐고요?

I think it does matter,

제 생각에 이는 매우 중요한 문제입니다.

and it's a problem that actually is part of a much deeper one

뿐만 아니라 더 깊은 문제를 내포한

that has implications for medicine and health

보건 및 의학의 복합적 요소와

and a lot of other aspects of our lives.

우리 삶의 다른 측면을 부각하는 문제입니다.

You all know that scientists use what we call model systems,

which are creatures -- white rats or fruit flies --

주로 흰쥐나 초파리등을 이용한 실험을 하는데요.

that are kind of stand-ins for all other animals, including people.

인간을 비롯한 거의 모든 동물들을 대체하는 종류라 볼 수 있습니다.

And the idea is that what's true for a person

기본적 논리는 인간에게 작용하는 것은

will also be true for the white rat.

흰쥐에게도 똑같이 작용한다는 전제이지요.

And by and large, that turns out to be the case.

그리고 실제로 실험결과가 그러합니다.

But you can take the idea of a model system too far.

하지만 이를 지나치게 남용하게 될 수도 있습니다.

And what I think we've done,

제 생각에 우리는 지금껏

is use males, in any species, as though they are the model system.

어떤 종이 되었든 수컷을 기본 전제로 하는 모형 시스템을

표준 처럼 생각해 온 것이죠.

The norm.

The way things are supposed to be.

그것이 당연한 것처럼 받아들이고

And females as a kind of variant --

암컷은 표준이 아닌 예외 적인 것

something special that you only study after you get the basics down.

기본적인 연구 이후에나 관심을 가지는 것이라 생각해 왔습니다.

And so, back to the insects.

다시 곤충이야기로 돌아가면

I think what that means

이것이 의미하는 바는

is that people just couldn't see what was in front of them.

인간이 우리 눈 앞의 것을 있는 그대로 보지 못한다는 겁니다.

Because they assumed that the world's stage was largely occupied by male players

왜냐하면 세계가 남성 위주로 돌아가고 있다고 생각하기 때문이죠.

and females would only have minor, walk-on roles.

그리고 여성은 아주 일부분이나 허드렛일을 하는 거라고 생각합니다.

But when we do that, we really miss out on a lot of what nature is like.

우리가 그럴 때 자연의 진짜 모습을 놓치게 됩니다.

And we can also miss out on the way natural, living things, including people,

인간을 포함한 동식물의 삶이 다양하고 다를 수 있다는 점을

간과하게 됩니다.

can vary.

And I think that's why we've used males as models in a lot of medical research,

이 때문에 많은 의학 연구들이 남성을 기본전제로 한 모델을 이용해 왔고

지금에 와서야 그것이 문제임을 인지하게 되었습니다.

something that we know now to be a problem

if we want the results to apply to both men and women.

Well, the last thing I really love about insects

is something that a lot of people find unnerving about them.

They have little, tiny brains

우리가 생각하기에 곤충은 작은 뇌를 가졌고

with very little cognitive ability, the way we normally think of it.

인지하는 능력이 매우 낮다고 여기는데

They have complicated behavior, but they lack complicated brains.

And so, we can't just think of them as though they're little people

because they don't do things the way that we do.

I really love that it's difficult to anthropomorphize insects,

Instead, you really have to accept them on their own terms,

because insects make us question what's normal and what's natural.

Now, you know, people write fiction and talk about parallel universes.

사람들은 소설을 쓰고 가상의 현실을 이야기 합니다.

They speculate about the supernatural,

초능력의 존재에 대해서 추측해보고

maybe the spirits of the departed walking among us.

우리 틈에 걸어다니고 있을지 모를 귀신과 같은것들 말이죠.

The allure of another world

다른 세계에 대한 매력은

is something that people say is part of why they want to dabble in the paranormal.

사람들이 초자연적인 것들을 탐구하고픈 호기심의 일부분입니다.

But as far as I'm concerned,

그렇지만 제가 느끼기에는

who needs to be able to see dead people,

살아있는 곤충을 볼 수 있는데 굳이 죽은 사람을 볼 필요가 있나요?

when you can see live insects?
