Last summer, I was hiking through the Austrian mountains.

And there, on top, I saw this beautiful, stone, remote hut,

and it had solar panels on it.

And every time I see solar panels, I get very enthusiastic.

It's this technology that takes sunlight, which is free and available,

and turns that into electricity.

이를 전기로 바꾸는 것이었습니다.

So this hut, in the middle of nowhere, on a beautiful location,

이 오두막은 외딴곳의 이 아름다운 장소에서

was self-sufficient.

But why do solar panels always have to be so ugly?

My name is Marjan Van Aubel and I'm a solar designer.

저는 마르얀 반 아우벨이고 태양광 전지판 디자이너에요.

I work in the triangle of design, sustainability and technology.

저는 기술성과 지속가능성, 디자인의 세 가지를 고려합니다.

I strive for extreme efficiency,

최고의 효율성을 추구하죠.

meaning that I develop materials that expand in size

저는 크기를 확장할 수 있는 재료를 개발하고

or work with solar cells that use the properties of colors

태양광 전지판을 만들 때 색상의 특성을 고려해서

to generate electricity.

발전 효율을 높이는 일을 합니다.

제 작품은 MoMA와 같은 전 세계의 전시관에 있습니다.

My work is in museums all over the world, such as MoMA.

And, I mean, it all went quite well,

그리고, 모든 것이 잘 되어가긴 했지만

but it always felt that something was missing.

항상 무언가를 놓치는 느낌이었습니다.

And it was, until I read the book called the "Solar Revolution,"

"솔라 혁명"이라는 책을 읽기 전까진 그랬죠.

where it says that within one hour we receive enough sunlight

그 책의 내용에 따르면 우리가 1시간 동안 받는 햇빛으로

to provide the world with enough electricity

전 세계가 1년 동안 쓸 만큼의 충분한 전기를 만들 수 있다고 합니다.

for an entire year.

One hour.

1시간 동안이요.

And since then, I realized I just want to focus on solar.

저는 그 책을 읽고 오직 태양광만 파고 들었습니다.

Scientists all over the world

전 세계의 모든 과학자들은

have been focusing on making solar panels more efficient and cheaper.

더 효율적이고 저렴한 태양 전지판을 만드는 데 주력해왔습니다.

So the price of solar has dropped enormously.

그래서 태양광 발전의 가격이 엄청나게 떨어졌죠.

And this is because China started producing them on a large scale.

이는 중국이 대규모 생산을 시작했기 때문입니다.

And also their efficiency has increased a lot.

그리고 발전 효율이 많이 향상된 것도 그 이유죠.

They now even have an efficiency of 44.5 percent.

심지어 현재는 44.5%의 발전 효율을 보이고 있습니다.

But if you think about the image of solar cells,

하지만 태양광 발전에 대한 사람들의 인식은

it's kind of stayed the same for the last 60 years.

지난 60년 전 수준에 머물러 있습니다.

It's still this technology just stacked onto something.

And solar cells need to be much better integrated into our environment.

Climate change is the biggest problem of our time.

And we can't rely on the others -- the government, the engineers --

긍정적 변화를 만들기 위해

to make positive changes.

We all can contribute towards change.

우리 모두가 변화에 기여할 수 있습니다.

Like I said, I'm a designer

말씀드렸듯이 저는 디자이너이고

and I would like to change things through design.

디자인을 통해 사물을 바꾸길 원합니다.

Let me give you some examples of my work.

제 작업 중 일부를 소개해드리죠.

I'm collaborating with Swarovski, the crystal company.

저는 크리스탈 회사인 스와로브스키와 협업 중입니다.

And if you cut crystals in a certain way,

크리스탈은 특정 방법으로 자르면

you are able to bend and direct the light onto a certain place.

빛을 굴절시켜 특정 위치로 빛을 보낼 수 있습니다.

So I use these crystals to focus the light onto a solar panel,

그래서 저는 이 크리스탈로 태양광 전지판에 빛을 집중시켜

making them more efficient, but using aesthetics.

더 효율적이면서도 미학적으로 만들었습니다.

So you take the solar crystal with you in the light,

there's a battery in the solar cell,

태양열 전지에 배터리가 있고

you put it in a docking station

이걸 도킹 스테이션에 연결하면

and you are able to power these chandeliers.

샹들리에에 전원을 공급할 수 있습니다.

So you're literally bringing the light indoors.

말 그대로 빛을 실내로 가져오는 거죠.

I got completely hooked on solar when I came across this technology

저를 태양광에 완전히 빠지게 만든 기술이 하나 있는데요.

called dye-sensitized solar cells,

바로 '염료 감지 태양전지' 기술입니다.

colored solar cells,

색소형 태양전지라고도 하는데

and they are based on photosynthesis in plants.

그것은 식물의 광합성에 기초합니다.

Where the green chlorophyl converts light into sugar for plants,

식물의 엽록소가 빛을 당으로 바꾸는 반면에

these cells convert light into electricity.

이 전지들은 빛을 전기로 바꿉니다.

The best thing is, they even work indoors.

최고의 장점은 심지어 실내에서도 작동한다는 거예요.

So different colors have different efficiency,

색깔에 따라 발전 효율도 다릅니다.

depending on their place on the color spectrum.

빛 스팩트럼 상의 어떤 색이냐에 따라서요.

So, for example, red is more efficient than blue.

예를 들면, 빨강은 파랑보다 발전 효율이 더 좋죠.

So if I hear this as a designer:

디자이너로서 이 사실을 알게 되면

a colored surface, a glass colored surface,

표면에 색을 입히고, 색이 있는 유리 표면을 만들죠.

color that's mostly just used for esthetics,

색은 주로 미학을 위해 사용되지만

now gets an extra function and is able to harvest electricity,

여기에 기능이 추가되어 전기를 수확할 수 있습니다.

I think, where can we apply this, then?

그럼, 이걸 어디에 쓸 수 있을 까요?

This is Current Table,

이것은 '발전용 탁자'입니다.

where the whole tabletop consists of these colored solar cells.

탁자 위 전체가 색을 입힌 태양전지판으로 되어 있죠.

There are batteries in the legs

다리에 배터리가 있어서

where you can charge your phone through USB ports.

USB로 핸드폰을 충전할 수 있습니다.

And in my work, it's always very important,

제 작품에서 가장 중요한 부분은

the balance between efficiency and aesthetics.

효율성과 미학 사이의 균형입니다.

So that's why the table is orange,

따라서 탁자를 주황색으로 한 것은

because it is a very stable color for indoors.

실내에서 매우 안정감을 주는 색이기 때문입니다.

And this is always the most asked question I get:

저는 이런 질문을 가장 많이 받습니다.

"OK, great, but how many phones can I charge from this, then?"

"그래, 좋아요, 그런데 이걸로 휴대폰을 몇 대나 충전할 수 있죠?"

And before I go to this complicated answer of like,

그러면 저는 복잡한 질문으로 답을 대신하죠.

"Well, where is the table, does it have enough light,

"그럼, 탁자를 어디에 두죠? 빛이 잘 드나요?

is it next to a window?"

창문 옆에 두나요?"

The table now has sensors that read the light intensity of the room.

그 탁자에는 방 안의 광도를 읽는 센서가 있습니다.

So through an app we developed

그래서 우리가 개발한 앱을 통해

you can literally follow how much light it's getting,

말그대로 광량이 얼마나 되는지 추적하고

and how full the battery is.

배터리가 얼마나 찼는지 알 수 있죠.

I'm actually proud, because yesterday we installed a table

자랑하고 싶은 것은, 우리는 어제 이 탁자를

at Stichting Doen's offices in Amsterdam

암스테르담에 있는 스티칭 던의 사무실에 설치했습니다.

and, right at this moment,

그리고, 바로 지금 이 순간

our Queen Maxima is charging a phone from this table.

우리의 맥시마 여왕이 그 탁자에서 핸드폰을 충전하고 있습니다.

멋지죠.

It's cool.

So the more surface you have, the more energy you can harvest.

그리고 표면적이 넓으면 더 많은 에너지를 얻을 수 있습니다.

These are Current Windows,

이것은 발전용 창문입니다.

저희는 런던의 소호에 있는 어느 갤러리의 모든 창문을

where we replaced all windows in a gallery in London, in Soho,

with this modern version of stained glass.

이 현대판스테인드 글라스로 교체했죠.

So people from the street could come and charge their phones

그래서 길에 있던 사람들이

창문틀에서 핸드폰을 충전할 수 있습니다.

through the window ledges.

So I'm giving extra functions to objects.

그러니까 사물에 추가적인 기능을 주는 것입니다.

A window doesn't have to be just a window anymore.

창문이 단지 창문 역할만 할 필요는 없죠.

It can also function as a little power station.

작은 발전소의 기능도 할 수 있습니다.

So, here I am, talking about how much I love solar,

그럼, 오늘 제가 태양광 발전을 얼나마 사랑하는지 얘기하고 있지만

but I don't have solar panels on my roof.

저희 집 지붕엔 태양 전지판이 없습니다.

I live in the center of Amsterdam,

저는 암스테르담 시내에 살고 있는데요.

제 집이 아니고, 기념물이라

I don't own the house and it's a monument,

so it's not possible and not allowed.

설치할 수도 없고, 허락되지도 않습니다.

So how can you make solar cells more accessible and for everyone,

그러면 어떤 태양 전지판을 만들어야

누구나 쓸 수 있고

and not only for the people that can afford a sustainable lifestyle?

생활이 어려운 사람들도 쓸 수 있을까요?

We now have the opportunity

그렇게 하려면

to integrate solar on the place where we directly need it.

태양전지판이 필요한 곳에 그것을 통합시키는 것입니다.

And there are so many amazing technologies out there.

세상에는 놀라운 기술들이 아주 많습니다.

If I look around now, I see every surface as an opportunity.

지금 주위를 둘러봐도 모든 표면에 설치 가능하죠.

For example, I was driving in the train through the Westland,

예를 들어, 웨스트랜드를 지나는 기차를 타고 있을 때였습니다.

the area in the Netherlands with all the greenhouses.

네덜란드에서 온실들이 많은 곳이죠.

There I saw all this glass and thought,

거기서 온실의 유리를 보고 생각이 떠올랐습니다.

what if we integrate those with transparent solar glass?

이것들을 투명한 태양광 유리로 만들면 어떨까 생각했죠.

What if we integrate traditional farming

많은 에너지가 요구되는 전통적인 농업을

that requires a lot of energy

together with high-tech and combine those?

첨단기술과 결합시키면 어떨까 생각했죠.

With this idea in mind, I created Power Plant.

이 생각을 염두에 두고, 저는 "식물 발전소"를 만들었습니다.

I had a team of architects and engineers,

팀에는 건축가와 엔지니어가 있지만

but let me first explain how it works.

어떻게 작동하는지 먼저 설명드리겠습니다.

We use transparent solar glass

우리는 투명한 태양광 유리로

to power its indoor climate.

실내 기후 조절을 위한 전원을 공급했습니다.

We use hydroponics that pumps around nutrified water,

우리는 영양분이 함유된 물을 퍼올려 수경재배를 했는데

saving 90 percent of water usage.

물 사용량의 90%가 절약되었죠.

By stacking up in layers, you are able to grow more yield per square meter.

층층이 쌓으면 면적당 수익을 증가시킬 수도 있습니다.

Extra light, besides sunlight, coming from these colored LED lights

햇빛 외에도, 이런 색상의 LED조명도

also enhances plant growth.

식물 성장을 향상시킵니다.

As more and more people will live in big cities,

점점 더 많은 사람들이 대도시에서 살 것이므로

by placing Power Plants on the rooftops

지붕을 "식물 발전소"로 교체하면

you don't have to fly it in from the other side of the world,

더는 지구 반대편에서 가져올 필요 없이

you are able to grow it on the location itself.

Well, the big dream is to build these in off-grid places --

where there's no access to water, electricity --

물과 전기가 없는 곳에

as an independent ecosystem.

독립적인 생태계를 만드는 거죠.

For this year's Design Biennial,

올해의 디자인 비엔날레를 위해

I created the first four-meter high model of the power plant,

저는 최초로 4m 높이의 식물 발전소 모델을 만들었습니다.

so you could come in and experience how plants grow.

그러므로 여러분은 식물이 어떻게 자라는지 경험할 수 있을 것입니다.

So it's a double harvest of sunlight,

햇빛으로 두 배의 수확을 거두는 거죠.

so both for the solar cells and for the plants.

태양 전지판을 위해, 그리고 식물을 위해서요.

It's like a future botanical garden,

미래의 식물원 같은 곳이며

where we celebrate all these modern technologies.

모든 현대 기술들이 적용됩니다.

And the biggest compliment I got was, "But where are the solar panels?"

가장 멋진 찬사는 이거였어요. "근데, 태양 전지판은 어디있나요?"

And that's when I think design really works,

그리고 제가 생각하기에 디자인이 정말 잘 되어 있으면

when it becomes invisible and you don't notice it.

사람들 눈에 띄지 않고 알아차리지 못합니다.

I believe in solar democracy:

저는 태양광은 민주적이라고 생각합니다.

solar energy for everyone, everywhere.

태양 에너지는 모든 곳의 모든 사람을 위한 것이니까요.

My aim is to make all surfaces productive.

I want to build houses where all the windows, curtains, walls,

저는 모든 창문과 커튼, 벽에서 전기를 수확하는 집을 짓고 싶습니다.

even floors are harvesting electricity.

심지어 바닥에서도요.

Think about this on a big scale:

더 큰 규모를 생각해보면

in cities, there are so many surfaces.

도시에는 많은 표면이 있습니다.

The sun is still available for everyone.

태양은 여전히 모두가 이용할 수 있습니다.

And by integrating solar on the place where we need it,

필요한 곳에 태양전지판을 통합시키면

we now have the opportunity to make solar cells accessible for everyone.

모두를 위한 태양광 발전을 할 수 있는 기회가 있습니다.

I want to bring solar close to the people with you,

여러분과 함께 사람들에게 태양광 발전을 제공하고 싶어요.

but beautiful and well designed.

물론 아름답게 잘 디자인해서 말이죠.
