the shoddy systems and the people who refuse to do better,

부당한 제도와 개선할 생각이 없는 사람들을 비판하는 것이죠.

as a writer, as a speaker, as a shady Nigerian --

작가이자 연설가이며 못 미더워하는 나이지리아인으로서요.

I feel like my purpose is to be this cat.

이 고양이처럼 되는 게 제 인생의 목적인 것 같아요.

I am the person who is looking at other people,

저는 이런 표정으로 타인을 바라보면서

like, "I need you to fix it."

"좀 고치세요!"라고 하죠.

That is me.

그게 바로 접니다.

I want us to leave this world better than we found it.

제가 이 세상을 떠날 때엔 이곳이 더 나은 곳이 되길 바랍니다.

And how I choose to effect change

저는 변화를 이끌어내기 위해

is by speaking up,

목소리를 높이고,

by being the first and by being the domino.

남보다 앞장서고, 도미노가 되기로 했습니다.

For a line of dominoes to fall,

도미노가 다 넘어지려면

one has to fall first,

하나의 도미노 조각이 먼저 넘어져야 하지요.

which then leaves the other choiceless to do the same.

그러면 다른 도미노는 별수 없이 쓰러지게 됩니다.

And that domino that falls,

일단 도미노가 넘어지면

we're hoping that, OK,

"좋아, 이걸 보면 다른 사람도 같이하게 될 거야." 라고 생각합니다.

the next person that sees this is inspired to be a domino.

Being the domino, for me, looks like speaking up

제게 있어서 도미노가 된다는 건

목소리를 높여서 매우 힘든 일을 성취함을 말하죠.

and doing the things that are really difficult,

especially when they are needed,

특히 꼭 해야 할 일이라면

with the hope that others will follow suit.

다른 사람들도 동참해주길 기대합니다.

And here's the thing: I'm the person who says

한가지 말씀드리자면 저는

what you might be thinking but dared not to say.

여러분이 생각만 하고 말하지 못한 이야기를 하는 사람입니다.

A lot of times people think that we're fearless,

흔히들 저 같은 사람은

the people who do this, we're fearless.

두려움이 없을 거라고들 생각하죠.

We're not fearless.

우리도 두려움이 없는 게 아닙니다.

We're not unafraid of the consequences

우리도 권력을 가진 이들에게 진실을 말함으로써 겪어야만 하는

or the sacrifices that we have to make

by speaking truth to power.

대가와 희생이 두렵습니다.

What happens is, we feel like we have to,

하지만 결국 해야만 한다고 생각하죠.

because there are too few people in the world

왜냐하면 세상에는 극소수만이

willing to be the domino,

도미노가 되려 하기 때문입니다.

too few people willing to take that fall.

기꺼이 쓰러지려는 사람들이 너무나 적기 때문입니다.

We're not doing it without fear.

저희도 두려움 속에서 활동하고 있습니다.

Now, let's talk about fear.

그럼 그 두려움에 대해 말해볼까요.

I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up.

어릴 때 제 꿈은 꽤 확실했습니다.

I was like, "I'm going to be a doctor!"

이렇게 말하곤 했죠. "의사가 될 거야!"

Doctor Luvvie was the dream.

의사 러비가 되는 게 꿈이었어요.

I was Doc McStuffins before it was a thing.

꼬마 의사 맥 스터핀이 유행하기 훨씬 전에요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And I remember when I went to college,

그리고 대학생이 되었습니다.

my freshman year, I had to take Chemistry 101

의대 예과에 진학하려면

1학년 때 기초 화학 수업을 이수해야 했습니다.

for my premed major.

I got the first and last D of my academic career.

제 학력에서 처음이자 마지막으로 D라는 점수를 받았죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So I went to my advisor, and I was like,

지도교수님을 찾아가 말씀드렸습니다.

"OK, let's drop the premed,

"예과는 안 가는 걸로 할래요.

because this doctor thing is not going to work,

어차피 의사 같은 건 안 될 거예요.

병원을 좋아하지도 않는걸요.

because I don't even like hospitals.

So ..."

그러니까..."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

"그 얘긴 끝난 걸로 해요."

"Let's just consider that done for."

And that same semester, I started blogging.

그 학기에 저는 블로그를 시작했습니다.

That was 2003.

2003년이었지요.

So as that one dream was ending, another was beginning.

하나의 꿈은 끝났지만 또 다른 꿈이 시작되었죠.

And then what was a cute hobby became my full-time job

이 귀여운 취미가 제 본업이 된 건

when I lost my marketing job in 2010.

마케팅 일을 하다 2010년에 실직했을 때였습니다.

But it still took me two more years to say, "I'm a writer."

하지만 저를 작가라고 일컫기까진 2년 정도가 더 걸렸죠.

Nine years after I had started writing, before I said, "I'm a writer,"

글쓰기를 시작하고 9년이나 지난 뒤에야

작가라고 말할 수 있게 된 거예요.

because I was afraid of what happens

앞으로 제 삶이 어떻게 될지 두려웠거든요.

without 401ks,

퇴직연금도 없을 테고..

without, "How am I going to keep up my shoe habit?

"신발 사모으는 취미는 어쩌지? 나한텐 중요한 건데!"

That's important to me."

(웃음)

(Laughter)

그래서 그렇게 오랜 시간이 걸려서야

So it took me that long to own this thing

that was what my purpose was.

작가가 제 삶의 목표란 걸 인정하게 되었어요.

And then I realized,

그러고는 깨달았어요.

fear has a very concrete power

두려움이 가진 현실적인 힘이

of keeping us from doing and saying the things that are our purpose.

우리 인생의 목적을 말하지도 이루지도 못하게 만든다는 걸 말이죠.

And I was like, "You know what?

저는 이렇게 말했지요.

I'm not going to let fear rule my life.

"이제는 두려움이 내 삶을 집어삼키게 두지 않겠어.

I'm not going to let fear dictate what I do."

두려움이 내가 하는 일을 지배하도록 두지 않을거야."

And then all of these awesome things started happening,

그러자 이런 멋진 일들이 일어나기 시작했고

and dominoes started to fall.

도미노는 넘어지기 시작했습니다.

So when I realized that, I was like, "OK, 2015,

그걸 깨닫고 결심했어요.

"좋아. 2015년에 난 서른이니까

I turned 30,

it's going to be my year of 'Do it anyway.'

뭐든 일단 도전해보는 해로 하자.

아무리 두려운 일이라도 해 보겠어!"

Anything that scares me, I'm going to actively pursue it."

So, I'm a Capricorn.

전 염소자리라서

I like my feel solidly on the ground.

땅에 두 발로 딱 버티고 있는 기분을 좋아합니다.

I decided to take my first-ever solo vacation,

전 처음으로 홀로 여행을 떠나기로 결심했습니다.

and it was out of the country to the Dominican Republic.

도미니카 공화국으로요.

So on my birthday, what did I do?

제 생일에 무슨 일을 했는지 아세요?

I went ziplining through the forests of Punta Cana.

푼타 카나의 깊은 숲에서 짚라인을 탔습니다.

And for some odd reason, I had on business casual.

말도 안되는 이유로 세미 정장을 입고서 말이죠.

이유는 묻지 말아주세요.

Don't ask why.

(웃음)

(Laughter)

And I had an incredible time.

정말 멋진 시간이었습니다.

Also, I don't like being submerged in water.

한편 전 잠수를 싫어하는 사람입니다.

I like to be, again, on solid ground.

다시 말씀드리지만 저는 땅을 딛는 게 좋아요.

So I went to Mexico and swam with dolphins underwater.

그런데 멕시코에서 돌고래와 수영을 했지요.

And then the cool thing that I did also that year

그리고 그 해 멋진 일을 또 하나 해냈는데요.

that was my mountain

제게 커다란 산 같았던 일인

was I wrote my book,

제 책을 출간하게 된 것입니다.

"I'm Judging You: The Do-Better Manual,"

제목이 "I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual" 입니다.

And I had to own --

그리고...

(Applause)

that whole writing thing now, right?

마침내 진정한 작가가 되었죠.

Yes.

But the very anti-me thing that I did that year

하지만 그 해에 제 성향과 반대되는

that scared the crap out of me --

정말 무서운 경험을 하기도 했습니다.

I went skydiving.

바로 스카이 다이빙입니다.

We're about to fall out of the plane.

뛰어내리기 직전에 이런 생각이 들었어요.

I was like, "I've done some stupid things in life. This is one of them."

"살면서 별짓을 다 했는데 또 한 건 하는구나."

(웃음)

(Laughter)

And then we come falling down to Earth,

땅으로 떨어지면서 정말로 숨이 턱 막혔어요.

and I literally lose my breath as I see Earth, and I was like,

아래를 바라보며 이런 생각을 했죠.

"I just fell out of a perfectly good plane on purpose."

"잘 가고 있는 비행기에서 일부러 떨어지다니!"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

"What is wrong with me?!"

"도대체 내가 왜 그랬을까?!"

But then I looked down at the beauty,

하지만 절경이 눈에 들어오자 이런 생각이 들었죠.

and I was like, "This is the best thing I could have done.

"내 인생 최고의 경험이야,

This was an amazing decision."

결정하길 잘했어."

And I think about the times when I have to speak truth.

진실을 말해야 하는 순간들을 생각하면

It feels like I am falling out of that plane.

마치 그 비행기에서 떨어질 때와 비슷한 감정을 느낍니다.

It feels like that moment when I'm at the edge of the plane,

비행기 끝에 매달려있을 때처럼 이런 생각이 들죠.

and I'm like, "You shouldn't do this,"

"안 하는게 좋겠어."

하지만 해야 한다는 걸 깨닫고 결국 하게 됩니다.

but then I do it anyway, because I realize I have to.

Sitting at the edge of that plane

비행기 끝에 앉아있거나

and kind of staying on that plane is comfort to me.

안에 타고 있으면 편합니다.

And I feel like every day that I'm speaking truth

저보다 더 큰 조직과 인물에게

against institutions and people who are bigger than me

그리고 더 강한 권력에 맞서서

and just forces that are more powerful than me,

진실을 말할 때마다

I feel like I'm falling out of that plane.

비행기 밖으로 떨어지는 것 같아요.

But I realize comfort is overrated.

하지만 편안함은 과대평가된 겁니다.

Because being quiet is comfortable.

침묵하면 편하잖아요.

Keeping things the way they've been is comfortable.

어떤 행동도 하지 않으면 편합니다.

And all comfort has done is maintain the status quo.

그 편안함이 현재 상태를 유지해 온 것입니다.

So we've got to get comfortable with being uncomfortable

그래서 우리는 필요하다면 무거운 진실을 이야기함으로써

by speaking these hard truths when they're necessary.

불편함을 기꺼이 감수하고 편안함을 쟁취해야 합니다.

And I --

그리고...

(박수)

(Applause)

And for me, though, I realize that I have to speak these truths,

제겐 진실을 이야기해야 하는 다른 이유도 있습니다.

because honesty is so important to me.

정직은 제게 매우 중요하거든요.

My integrity is something I hold dear.

저는 진실함을 소중히 여깁니다.

Justice -- I don't think justice should be an option.

공정함 역시 선택사항이어선 안됩니다.

We should always have justice.

공정하게 살아야 합니다.

Also, I believe in shea butter as a core value, and --

시어 버터도 아주 중요한 핵심 가치라고 믿는데요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

and I think the world would be better if we were more moisturized.

우리 세상이 촉촉해지면 이 세상도 더 나아질 거라 생각해요.

But besides that, with these as my core values,

이런 것들을 핵심 가치로 두었으니 전 진실을 말해야만 합니다.

I have to speak the truth.

I have no other choice in the matter.

여기에 다른 선택권은 없어요.

But people like me, the professional troublemakers,

하지만 저 같은 프로 불편러들만

should not be the only ones who are committed to being these dominoes

늘 도미노 역할을 해서는 안되고

비행기에서 뛰어내리거나

who are always falling out of planes

처음으로 타격을 받는 사람이 되어서는 안됩니다.

or being the first one to take this hit.

People are so afraid of these acute consequences,

사람들은 결과가 심각해질 것을 두려워하죠.

not realizing that there are many times when we walk in rooms

하지만 때에 따라서는 우리도

어떤 장소에서는 가장 큰 힘을 가지거나

and we are some of the most powerful people in those rooms --

we might be the second-most powerful, third-most powerful.

다음, 또는 그 다음 권력자가 될 수 있는데도 말예요.

And I firmly believe that our job in those times

그럴 때 우리가 해야 할 일은

is to disrupt what is happening.

그런 상황을 만들지 않는 것이라고 믿습니다.

And then if we're not the most powerful,

우리가 최고의 권력자는 아니더라도

if two more of us band together,

여러 명이 모이면

it makes us powerful.

강한 힘을 갖게 되죠.

It's like cosigning the woman in the meeting,

아무 말도 꺼낼 수 없는데도

you know, the woman who can't seem to get her word out,

회의에 참석해야 하는 여성을 묵인하거나

or just making sure that other person who can't make a point

자신의 주장을 펼칠 수 없는 이들이

듣고만 있게 만드는 상황에서요.

is being heard.

Our job is to make sure they have room for that.

우리는 그들에게 가능성을 열어주어야 합니다.

Everyone's well-being is community business.

모든 사람이 잘 살도록 하는 게 공동체의 책임임을 생각한다면

If we made that a point, we'd understand that,

for the times when we need help,

도움이 필요한 상황에서 주변을 둘러보지 않아도 될 겁니다.

we wouldn't have to look around so hard

우리도 누군가에게 도움을 주었으니까요.

if we made sure we were somebody else's help.

And there are times when I feel like

때로는 이런 느낌이 들 때도 있어요.

I have taken very public tumbles and falls,

사람들 앞에서 넘어져 구르는 것처럼 무안할 때가 있습니다.

like the time when I was asked to speak at a conference,

예를 들면, 학회 강연을 부탁받았는데

and they wanted me to pay my way there.

오히려 저더러 돈을 내라고 하는 경우죠.

And then I did some research

그래서 좀 알아봤더니 거기서 강연하는 백인 남성은

and found out the white men who spoke there got compensated

강사료에 출장비까지 받는다더군요.

and got their travel paid for.

The white women who spoke there got their travel paid for.

백인 여성 역시 출장비를 받았지요.

The black women who spoke there were expected to actually pay to speak there.

흑인 여성은 강연을 하려면 오히려 돈을 내야 합니다.

And I was like, "What do I do?"

저는 어떻게 해야 할지 몰랐어요.

And I knew that if I spoke up about this publicly,

이 문제를 공론화하면 제게 손해라는 걸 알고 있었습니다.

I could face financial loss.

But then I also understood that my silence serves no one.

그러나 침묵하면 누구에게도 도움이 되지 않는다는 걸 깨달았죠.

So I fearfully spoke up about it publicly,

그래서 두려웠지만 이 일을 세상에 알렸습니다.

and other women started coming out to talk about,

다른 여성들이 동참했지요.

"I, too, have faced this type of pay inequality."

"저도 비슷한 임금 차별을 당했어요" 이렇게 밝히면서

And it started a conversation about discriminatory pay practices

이 학회가 고수하는 불평등 임금 관행에 대해

that this conference was participating in.

이야기하기 시작했습니다.

I felt like I was the domino

저는 마치 도미노가 된 기분이었습니다.

the time I read a disturbing memoir by a public figure

한번은 어떤 유명인에 관한 충격적인 목격담을 읽고

and wrote a piece about it.

그에 관한 글을 쓴 적이 있습니다.

I knew this person was more powerful than me and could impact my career,

저에 비하면 막강한 힘을 가진 사람이었어요.

제 경력에 영향을 미칠 수도 있었지만 이렇게 생각했죠.

but I was like, "I've got to do this.

"꼭 해야 할 일이야. 비행기 끝에 앉는 거야."

I've got to sit at the edge of this plane," maybe for two hours.

2시간 정도 고민한 끝에 결국 해냈습니다.

And I did. And I pressed "Publish," and I ran away.

글을 게시한 뒤 냅다 도망쳤죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And I came back to a viral post

그 후에 제 글을 확인하러 왔더니

and people being like, "Oh my God, I'm so glad somebody finally said this."

누군가 이 얘기를 꺼내주어서 정말 좋다는 말들이 있더군요.

And it started a conversation

그리고 거기에서부터

about mental health and self-care,

정신 건강과 자신을 돌보는 방법에 관한 논의가 시작되었습니다.

and I was like, "OK. Alright.

전 생각했어요. "그래. 바로 이거야!"

This thing that I'm doing, I guess, alright, it's doing something."

"내가 하는 일이 효과가 있었어."

And then so many people have been the domino

그러자 많은 사람들이 도미노가 되어주었습니다.

when they talk about how they've been assaulted by powerful men.

권력을 가진 남성에게 폭행을 당한 이야기를 하면서요.

And it's made millions of women join in and say, "Me Too."

수백만 명의 여성이 동참해 "미투(Me too)"를 말하기 시작했죠.

So, a shout-out to Tarana Burke for igniting that movement.

미투 운동에 불을 붙인 타라나 버크에게 감사를 표합니다.

People and systems count on our silence to keep us exactly where we are.

대중과 제도는 우리의 침묵 위에서 현 상태를 유지하려고 합니다.

Now, being the domino sometimes comes down to being exactly who you are.

도미노가 된다는 것은

나 자신으로 살아감을 의미하기도 합니다.

So, I've been a shady somebody since I was three.

저는 세 살 때부터 못 미더워하는 사람이었어요.

(Laughter)

This is me on my third birthday.

제 세 살 생일 때 사진입니다.

But I've been this girl all my life,

전 내내 이런 소녀였어요.

and I feel like even that's been the domino,

이 또한 도미노 같다고 생각했습니다.

because in a world that wants us to walk around

세상은 우리에게 전체를 대변하면서 살기를 바라는데

as representatives of ourselves,

being yourself can be a revolutionary act.

그 속에서 자신을 드러내기란 혁명과도 같았으니까요.

And in a world that wants us to whisper,

숨죽여 속삭이라고 하는 세상에서

I choose to yell.

저는 소리치기로 결심했습니다.

(Applause)

When it's time to say these hard things,

이렇게 어려운 이야기를 해야 할 때

I ask myself three things.

스스로에게 세 가지를 묻습니다.

One: Did you mean it?

첫째, 진심으로 하는 이야기인가?

Two: Can you defend it?

둘째, 근거가 있는가?

Three: Did you say it with love?

셋째, 사랑하는 마음으로 말하는가?

If the answer is yes to all three,

세 질문의 답이 모두 ‘그렇다’이면

I say it and let the chips fall.

결과가 어찌 되든 이야기합니다.

That's important.

이것이 핵심입니다.

That checkpoint with myself

이런 질문들을 스스로에게 던짐으로써 말해야만 한다는 속삭임을 듣죠.

always tells me, "Yes, you're supposed to do this."

Telling the truth -- telling thoughtful truths --

진심에서 우러난 진실을 말하는 것이 혁명이 되어서는 안 됩니다.

should not be a revolutionary act.

Speaking truths to power should not be sacrificial, but they are.

권력을 향해 진실을 말하는 것이 희생이 되어서는 안 됩니다.

하지만 현실은 희생을 요구합니다.

But I think if more of us chose to do this for the greater good,

더 많은 이들이 공공의 선의를 위해 진실을 말해왔다면

we'd be in better spaces than we are right now.

우리는 지금보다 더 좋은 곳에 살고 있었을텐데요.

Speaking of the greater good,

더 나은 선에 대해 얘기하자면

I think we commit ourselves to telling truths to build bridges

우리는 진실을 말함으로써

합의점에 이르는 다리를 만들어야 합니다.

to common ground,

and bridges that aren't based on truth will collapse.

진실에 근거하지 않은 다리는 무너지고 말 겁니다.

So it is our job,

이것이 우리가 할 일이며

it is our obligation, it is our duty

의무이자 도리입니다.

to speak truth to power, to be the domino,

권력에 맞서 진실을 말하고 도미노가 되는 것이요.

not just when it's difficult --

어려울 때에만 하는 게 아니라 어려울 때 유독 더 행해야 합니다.

especially when it's difficult.
