I host a YouTube show called "Keeping It Real with Adeola."

Now this show is a gentle, respectful and very blunt way

이 쇼는 부패한 아프리카 지도자들에게 공손한 태도와 존경심을 보여주는 동시에

그들을 적나라하게 비판하는 쇼 입니다.

of calling out corrupt African leaders.

I basically keep it real with them, ha!

저런 사람들에 대해 진솔한 얘기를 한다니까요!

특히 일을 엉망으로 만들 때요. 자주 그러지만요.

Especially when they mess up, which is a lot of times.

If any African official is watching me, by the way,

혹시 아프리카에 공무원님들 중 제 쇼를 보고 계시다면

I'm not talking about you, sir.

당신 얘기를 하는 게 아니에요.

I'm talking about your colleagues, yes.

동료분들 얘기를 하는 겁니다.

I do this because Africa has everything in it to be great.

제가 이 일을 하는 이유는 아프리카가 크게 될 모든 걸 갖췄기 때문이에요.

You know, I grew up believing

저는 어렸을 때부터

that Africa as a continent is a giant.

아프리카 대륙은 거인이라고 생각해 왔습니다.

We've got skills, intellectuals,

우리는 기술과 지식인들이 있고

natural resources more than any other continent.

세계 어느 대륙보다도 풍부한 자원을 가지고 있어요.

Africa supplies 31 percent of the world's gold,

아프리카는 세계의 금, 망간, 우라늄 생산량 중 31%를 담당하고

manganese and uranium,

57 percent of the world's diamonds

세계 다이아몬드 생산량의 57%와

세계 석유 생산량의 13%를 담당합니다.

and 13 percent of the world's oil.

We have no reason to depend on aid

우리는 원조에 의지하거나

or borrowing money from China or the World Bank.

중국이나 세계은행으로부터 돈을 빌릴 이유가 전혀 없어요.

But without good leaders,

하지만 제대로 된 지도자 없이는

we're like an eagle that has no idea it could fly,

Africa is a like a sleeping giant.

Now the truth is, I'm trying to wake up this giant,

and that's why I air the dirty laundry

of those in charge of the giant.

Our politicians, our religious leaders,

with huge respect, of course,

물론 커다란 존경심을 가지고요.

because more than anything else,

왜냐하면 아프리카의 지도자들은

African leaders love to be respected.

무엇보다 존경받고 싶어하니까요.

So I give it to them in doses.

그래서 조금씩 존경심을 보여줍니다.

On my show,

제 쇼에서

I kneel for them -- ha! --

그들을 위해 무릎을 꿇고

I call them my uncles, my aunties,

그들을 삼촌, 이모, 그리고 주 안의 나의 아버지라고 부르죠.

my fathers in the lord,

and then --

그리고 나서

I insult them for insulting our intelligence.

우리의 지성을 모욕한 것에 대해 그들을 모욕합니다.

And it's because we are tired

왜냐하면 우린 위선과 말 뿐인 약속에 지쳤거든요.

of the hypocrisy and false promises.

For example,

예를 들면

the Nigerian president vowed to end medical tourism

나이지리아 대통령은 국민들의 의료관광을 막겠다고 맹세했었어요.

by fixing our dilapidated hospitals

낡은 병원을 고쳐 새 병원을 지어서 말이에요.

and building us new ones.

But what did he do?

그래 놓고 뭘 했는지 아세요?

He spends three months receiving treatment in London in 2017.

2017년에 런던에서 3개월 동안 치료를 받았어요.

We were without a president for three months.

3개월 동안 대통령 자리가 공석이었던 거예요.

We were president-less for three months.

우리는 3개월 동안 대통령이 없었다고요.

So then it becomes my job to call out the President,

그래서 제가 총대를 메고 대통령을 비판하게 된 거죠.

with respect, of course.

물론 존경심을 보이면서요.

I said, "Ha, Mr. President, it's your girl, Adeola.

"대통령 각하. 저예요, 아데올라.

You know how I do, how you doing?

You have no shame."

I forgot to add "sir."

현재 나이지리아인 의사 3만 5천명이

Thirty-five thousand Nigerian doctors are presently working in the US,

the UK and Canada,

미국, 영국, 캐나다에서 일하며

doing amazing things,

놀라운 일들을 해내고 있습니다.

because in Nigeria, they are not well-paid,

왜냐하면 나이지리아에서는 그들의 임금이 낮을 뿐만 아니라

neither do they have the necessary equipment

필요한 의료기기 조차 지원받지 못하기 때문이죠.

to do the job of being a doctor.

And this is happening in many African countries.

아프리카의 여러 나라에서 이런 일이 생기고 있습니다.

We have the capacity to fly.

우리는 날 수 있는 잠재력이 있어요.

But sadly, a lot of African talent is flying straight out of Africa

하지만 슬프게도 아프리카의 우수한 인재들이

아프리카를 떠나 다른 대륙으로 날아가고 있습니다.

to other continents.

For example,

예를 들면,

this Nigerian doctor operated on an unborn baby

이 나이지리아인 의사는 텍사스에서 태아를 수술하는데 성공했습니다.

in Texas.

Also, this Nigerian doctor

discovered the neurological effects of concussion on athletes.

And many countries have African athletes

winning the gold medal for them.

The interesting thing is,

we're waiting for God to fix Africa.

우리는 그저 신께서 아프리카를 바로잡아 주길 기다리고 있다는 거예요.

Like, for real, it's not a joke, we are, we're waiting for God.

아니, 진짜, 농담이 아니에요. 정말로 신을 기다리고 있다고요.

I mean, just look at the president of Burundi.

부룬디의 대통령을 좀 보세요.

He's jailing journalists and opposition members,

기자들과 야당 의원들을 감옥에 집어넣고서는

but he declared national day of prayer

전국적인 기도의 날을 선포합니다.

so that people could pray for God to fix the country.

국민들이 신께 나라를 바로잡아 주기를 기도할 수 있도록 말이에요.

And I'm like, shouldn't he be fixing the country?

나라를 바로잡는 건 대통령이 할 일 아닌가요?

Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.

오, 아니에요.

We want God to fix it.

신이 바로잡아 주길 바라고 있어요.

Do you see what I have to deal with?

제가 상대해야 하는 게 어떤 건지 아시겠어요?

I'm telling you,

장담하건데

thunder is getting ready to hit these politicians some day.

이런 정치인들은 언젠가 날벼락을 맞을 거예요.

We are better than this.

우리는 이것보다 더 잘 할 수 있어요.

I want our leaders to start taking responsibility

저는 우리의 지도자들이 이제 그들의 책임을 짊어지고

and stop putting everything on God.

신한테 모든 걸 미루는 일을 그만 두길 바래요.

God has given us everything we need.

신은 우리에게 필요한 모든 걸 주셨어요.

It's right here, let's use it.

그걸 사용하는 일만 남았어요.

But here's the thing, my favorite part of what I do

제가 하는 일 가운데 제가 가장 좋아하는 점은

is featuring Africans doing amazing work,

바로 훌륭한 일을 해내는 아프리카인들에 대해 얘기하는 거예요.

ordinary people touching lives.

사람들의 삶을 어루만지는 보통 사람들이요.

Like this Kenyan woman, Wangari Maathai,

이 케냐 여인 왕가리 마타이처럼요.

the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace prize,

아프리카 여인으로는 처음으로 노벨 평화상을 수상했죠.

for standing up for human rights

인권을 위해 목소리 높이고

and planting a million trees.

수백만 그루의 나무를 심은 공로를 인정 받아서요.

Also this Zimbabwean woman,

이 짐바브웨인 여인

Dr. Tererai Trent,

테레라이 트렌트 박사는

who was married off at the age of 14

열네 살에 소 한마리를 대가로

in exchange for a cow.

팔려가듯 결혼했습니다.

Yet, this woman taught herself to read and write,

하지만 글을 읽고 쓰는 방법을 스스로 터득했고

and she ended up on Oprah's show.

결국 오프라 쇼까지 진출하게 됐죠.

Oh, Father, I want to be on Oprah some day.

오, 아버지, 저도 언젠가 오프라 쇼에 나가고 싶어요.

Today, this woman has built schools

오늘날 이 여인은 조국 짐바브웨에

for thousands of children in Zimbabwe.

수천 명의 아이들을 위한 학교들을 세웠습니다.

Also, popular British architect David Adjaye has designed

그리고 유명한 영국 건축가 데이비드 아다아에는

spectacular buildings around the world.

전 세계 곳곳에 굉장한 건물들을 디자인했죠.

And he's both Ghanian and Tanzanian,

그는 가나와 탄자니아 혈통인데

so we know that it has to be the Ghanian Jollof rice,

아마 그가 먹은 가나의 졸로프 라이스가

which he ate,

영감의 원천이지 않겠어요?

that gave him the inspiration to design.

Ah, maybe it's the Nigerian Jollof rice,

아니면 나이지리아의 졸로프 라이스일 수도 있겠네요.

because Nigerian one is better.

나이지리아 것이 더 맛있거든요.

Anyway, but that is what gave him the inspiration to become

어쨌든, 그게 바로 오늘날 그가 훌륭한 건축가가 될 수 있도록

the great man that he is today.

영감을 준 것이죠.

First of all, it's not a country, it's a continent.

I do not know Paul from Uganda,

I don't know Rebecca from Zimbabwe.

Nigeria is as far from Zimbabwe

나이지리아에서 짐바브웨까지 거리는

as New York is from France.

뉴욕에서 프랑스까지 만큼이나 멀어요.

And it's not a bunch of naked people in need of Western charity.

그리고 아프리카엔 서양의 원조가 필요한 반라의 사람들만 있는 게 아니에요.

You have it all wrong.

다 틀렸어요.

거리에 사자가 돌아다니지도 않아요. 아시겠어요?

Lions are not roaming our streets, OK?

And I could go on,

할 얘기는 더 많지만 제가 무슨 말을 하는지 아시겠죠.

but you already know what I'm talking about.

So while I try to do my job,

그러니까 제가 제 할 일인 잠자는 거인 아프리카를 깨워

trying to wake up the sleeping giant, Africa,

so she could take her rightful place on the world's arena,

세계 무대에서 정당한 위치를 찾을 수 있도록 돕는 일을 하는 동안
