Today I stand before you as a man who lives life to the full

in the here and now.

But for a long time,

I lived for death.

I was a young man who believed

that jihad is to be understood in the language of force and violence.

I tried to right wrongs through power and aggression.

I had deep concerns for the suffering of others

and a strong desire to help and bring relief to them.

I thought violent jihad was noble,

chivalrous

勇敢で

and the best way to help.

人々を救済する 最善の方法だと考えていました

At a time when so many of our people --

多くのアラブの同胞達が

young people especially --

特に若者達が

are at risk of radicalization

過激に走る危うさを孕んでいます

through groups like al-Qaeda,

アルカイダや

イスラム国をはじめとしたグループが

Islamic State and others,

when these groups are claiming

彼らにこう呼びかけるからです

that their horrific brutality and violence are true jihad,

彼らの 容赦ない暴力こそが 真のジハードなのだと

I want to say that their idea of jihad is wrong --

私は その考えは 間違いだと伝えたいのです

かつて私も 信じていましたが

completely wrong --

それは完全な間違いです

as was mine, then.

Jihad means to strive to one's utmost.

ジハードの真の意味は 己を高めてゆくことです

It includes exertion and spirituality,

日々努力し 霊性を高め

self-purification

己を見つめ 心を清らかにし

and devotion.

人のために尽くすことです

It refers to positive transformation

学びや知恵 そして 神の教えを通して

through learning, wisdom and remembrance of God.

よりよい自分に変わってゆくことです

The word jihad stands for all those meanings as a whole.

ジハードとは その全てを表す言葉です

Jihad may at times take the form of fighting,

ジハードが 戦うことを意味することもありますが

but only sometimes,

それは稀なことであり

under strict conditions,

非常に厳しい状況において

within rules and limits.

規則や制限の下でです

イスラムにおいては

In Islam,

ある行為から得るものが それに伴う 苦しみや困難より勝らなくてはなりません

the benefit of an act must outweigh the harm or hardship it entails.

More importantly,

より重要なのは

コーランの中で ジハードと 戦いについて記された言葉は

the verses in the Koran that are connected to jihad or fighting

do not cancel out the verses that talk about forgiveness,

寛大さや

博愛の心や

忍耐を否定しません

benevolence

or patience.

But now I believe that there are no circumstances on earth

しかし今日 世界各地で起こっている

where violent jihad is permissible,

暴力的なジハードは 決して許されることではありません

because it will lead to greater harm.

なぜならそれは恩恵よりも 苦しみをもたらすからです

But now the idea of jihad has been hijacked.

ジハードの理念は ハイジャックされたかのようです

It has been perverted to mean violent struggle

歪められ 暴力による闘争を指す言葉となり

wherever Muslims are undergoing difficulties,

and turned into terrorism

アルカイダやイスラム国などの

by fascistic Islamists like al-Qaeda,

原理主義者によって

Islamic State and others.

But I have come to understand

しかし私はわかったのです

that true jihad means striving to the utmost

真のジハードとは 神の愛する徳を磨き　生きるために

to strengthen and live those qualities which God loves:

己を高めてゆくことだと

honesty, trustworthiness,

神の愛する徳とは 正直さ 頼りになること

compassion, benevolence,

同情の心 博愛

reliability, respect,

信頼に足ること 他人を尊重する心

truthfulness --

誠実さ

human values that so many of us share.

誰もが分かち合う 人として大切なことです

I was born in Bangladesh,

私はバングラデシュで 生まれましたが

but grew up mostly in England.

イギリスで育ちました

And I went to school here.

イギリスの学校に通いました

My father was an academic,

私の父は学者でした

and we were in the UK through his work.

私たち家族は 父の仕事でイギリスに渡りました

In 1971 we were in Bangladesh when everything changed.

1971年　まだバングラデシュにいた頃 全てが変わりました

The War of Independence impacted upon us terribly,

独立戦争が私たちを踏みにじったのです

pitting family against family,

家族が 町の人々が

neighbor against neighbor.

いがみ合い 戦いました

And at the age of 12 I experienced war,

私は12歳で戦争を経験しました

destitution in my family,

家族は飢えに苦しみ

the deaths of 22 of my relatives in horrible ways,

22人の親戚が 無残に殺されました

as well as the murder of my elder brother.

I witnessed killing ...

animals feeding on corpses in the streets,

starvation all around me,

wanton, horrific violence --

senseless violence.

I was a young man,

teenager, fascinated by ideas.

勉強がしたいと思っていました

I wanted to learn,

but I could not go to school for four years.

でも ４年間 学校に通えませんでした

After the War of Independence,

独立戦争の後

my father was put in prison for two and a half years,

父は ２年半 刑務所に入れられました

and I used to visit him every week in prison,

毎週 面会に行ったものです

そして 自学自習を続けました

and homeschooled myself.

1973年に 父は釈放され

My father was released in 1973

and he fled to England as a refugee,

亡命者としてイギリスに渡り

and we soon followed him.

I was 17.

私は17歳でした

So these experiences gave me

そんな経験を通して 私は世の中の残虐さや

a sharp awareness of the atrocities and injustices in the world.

理不尽さを思い知らされました

And I had a strong desire --

私は強く望んでいました

とても強く そして深く

a very keen, deep desire --

to right wrongs

世の中を正し

and help the victims of oppression.

虐げられた 犠牲者たちを救いたいと

While studying at college in the UK,

イギリスの大学で学ぶ間

I met others who showed me how I could channel that desire

私は仲間と出会いました

彼らはどうしたら思いを果たせるか そして宗教で人々を救えるかを説きました

and help through my religion.

And I was radicalized --

そして私は 原理主義者になっていきました

enough to consider violence correct,

暴力も正当なものであり

even a virtue under certain circumstances.

So I became involved in the jihad in Afghanistan.

I wanted to protect the Muslim Afghan population against the Soviet army.

And I thought that was jihad:

my sacred duty,

which would be rewarded by God.

I became a preacher.

I was one of the pioneers of violent jihad in the UK.

I recruited,

I raised funds, I trained.

I confused true jihad

with this perversion as presented by the fascist Islamists --

these people who use the idea of jihad

彼らは 力と権利を求め 世の中を支配するという欲望を

to justify their lust for power, authority and control on earth:

正当化するために ジハードの名を借りているのです

a perversion perpetuated today by fascist Islamist groups

今日 歪んだジハード観は アルカイダやイスラム国などの

like al-Qaeda, Islamic State and others.

For a period of around 15 years,

私は原理主義者であった―

I fought for short periods of time

15年の中で少しの間

アフガニスタン以外にも

in Kashmir and Burma,

カシミールやミャンマーのためにも戦いました

besides Afghanistan.

目的は侵略者を撃退すること

Our aim was to remove the invaders,

to bring relief to the oppressed victims

and of course to establish an Islamic state,

a caliphate for God's rule.

And I did this openly.

I didn't break any laws.

I was proud and grateful to be British --

I still am.

イギリスに対して 何の敵意も持っていませんでした

And I bore no hostility against this, my country,

nor enmity towards the non-Muslim citizens,

and I still don't.

During one battle in Afghanistan,

some British men and I formed a special bond

with a 15-year-old Afghani boy,

Abdullah,

彼の名はアブドラ

an innocent, loving and lovable kid

純粋で 愛らしい 愛すべき少年でした

who was always eager to please.

彼は人を喜ばせるのが大好きでした

He was poor.

貧しい少年でした

And boys like him did menial tasks in the camp.

彼のような少年達は キャンプで 単純労働をしていました

And he seemed happy enough,

ですが 彼は幸せそうに見えました

but I couldn't help wonder --

私は考えずにいられませんでした

his parents must have missed him dearly.

彼の両親は 彼をどんなに恋しがっているだろうかと

And they must have dreamt about a better future for him.

そして彼に幸せな未来を 願っているに違いないと

A victim of circumstance caught up in a war,

残酷な状況の中で

cruelly thrust upon him

戦争に巻き込まれた 犠牲者としての現実が

by the cruel circumstances of the time.

彼に容赦なくのしかかっていました

One day I picked up this unexploded mortar shell in a trench,

ある日 私は塹壕で 不発弾を拾いました

and I had it deposited in a makeshift mud hut lab.

それを 急ごしらえの 泥壁の小屋に置きました

And I went out on a short, pointless skirmish --

そして いつもの 短時間の目的もない戦闘に

always pointless,

小屋を出ました

And I came back a few hours later to discover he was dead.

数時間後 小屋へ戻った時 そこで少年が死んでいました

火薬を取り出そうとして 不発弾が爆発し

He had tried to recover explosives from that shell.

It exploded, and he died a violent death,

彼は無残な姿で死んでいたのです

blown to bits by the very same device that had proved harmless to me.

自分には無害だった 不発弾のために 粉々になって・・・

私は自分に問いかけました

So I started to question.

How did his death serve any purpose?

彼の死に どんな意味があるのだろう？

Why did he die and I lived?

なぜ彼は死に 私は生きているのだろう？

I carried on.

私はジハードを続けました

私はカシミールで戦いました

I fought in Kashmir.

I also recruited for the Philippines,

また フィリピンで

Bosnia and Chechnya.

ボスニアで チェチェンで新兵勧誘をしました

And the questions grew.

自分への問いは 膨らむばかりでした

Later in Burma,

後に 私はミャンマーで

I came across Rohingya fighters,

ロヒンギャの戦士達と出会いました

やっと十代になったばかりの

who were barely teenagers,

born and brought up in the jungle,

彼らは マシンガンと手榴弾発射銃を手に

ジャングルで生まれ育った 少年たちでした

carrying machine guns and grenade launchers.

そこで私は 礼儀正しい ２人の13歳の少年と出会いました

I met two 13-year-olds with soft manners and gentle voices.

Looking at me,

イギリスに連れて行ってくれと 頼むのでした

they begged me to take them away to England.

They simply wanted to go to school --

彼らはただ 学校に行きたかったのです

that was their dream.

それが彼らの夢でした

My family --

私の家族・・・

my children of the same age --

彼らと同い年の私の子供は

were living at home in the UK,

イギリスの家で暮らし

学校へ通っています

going to school,

living a safe life.

平和に暮らしています

And I couldn't help wonder

私は考えずにいられませんでした

この少年たちは そんな平凡な日々を夢見て

how much these young boys must have spoken to one another

about their dreams for such a life.

何度語り合ったのだろうかと

Victims of circumstances:

彼らは不条理な世の犠牲者です

these two young boys,

星を見上げながら

sleeping rough on the ground, looking up at the stars,

地べたの上で眠り

指導者達の私利私欲と 権力争いのために

cynically exploited by their leaders

for their personal lust for glory and power.

冷酷に搾取されていました

I soon witnessed boys like them killing one another

私はまた 彼らのような少年たちが

グループ同士の諍いで 殺し合うのを見ました

in conflicts between rival groups.

And it was the same everywhere ...

それはありふれた光景でした

Afghanistan, Kashmir, Burma,

アフガニスタン カシミール ミャンマー

Philippines, Chechnya;

フィリピン チェチェン・・・

petty warlords got the young and vulnerable to kill one another

愚かな指導者達のせいで 若者や弱者が殺し合っていました

in the name of jihad.

ジハードの名の下に

Muslims against Muslims.

イスラム教徒同士で

Not protecting anyone against invaders or occupiers;

侵略者や支配者から 誰かを守る為でなく

自由のためでもなく

not bringing relief to the oppressed.

Children being used,

子供達はこき使われ

cynically exploited;

容赦なく搾取され

people dying in conflicts

人々は争い死んでゆきました

which I was supporting in the name of jihad.

私がジハードの名の下に 戦った争いの中で・・・

And it still carries on today.

そして それは今も続いています

Realizing that the violent jihad

私が外国で参加した

I had engaged in abroad

暴力的なジハードは

was so different --

私の理想とは かけ離れたものだと悟りました

such a chasm between what I had experienced

私が経験したことと 私が聖なる務めと信じたこととは

深い裂け目に 隔たれていました

and what I thought was sacred duty --

I had to reflect on my activities here in the UK.

私はイギリスで 自分がしてきた事を 省みる必要がありました

I had to consider my preaching,

深く考える必要がありました 伝道や

recruiting, fund-raising,

人々の勧誘や 資金集めや

training,

訓練を行い

but most importantly, radicalizing --

なにより重大なのは 若者たちを過激に走らせ

sending young people to fight and die

戦いの死地に送り込んだこと

as I was doing --

私がやってきた事は

all totally wrong.

全て間違っていました

So I got involved in violent jihad in the mid '80s,

私は80年代の半ばに

starting with Afghanistan.

アフガニスタンを皮切りに 暴力的なジハードに参加し

And by the time I finished it was in the year 2000.

2000年に気が付くその時まで

活動に身を捧げました

I was completely immersed in it.

All around me people supported,

組織では誰もが私を支え

applauded,

褒め称え

even celebrated what we were doing in their name.

ジハードの名の下で行われる 行いを賛美しました

But by the time I learned to get out,

completely disillusioned in the year 2000,

15 years had passed.

So what goes wrong?

振り返ってみると

We were so busy talking about virtue,

私たちは 価値観について 論じるのに明け暮れ

大義のために 回りが見えなくなっていました

and we were blinded by a cause.

And we did not give ourselves a chance to develop a virtuous character.

自分たちの内面を 磨こうとはしませんでした

We told ourselves we were fighting for the oppressed,

弱者のために戦っていると 自分達に言い聞かせていました

but these were unwinnable wars.

それらの戦いは 勝てるはずのないものでした

We became the very instrument through which more deaths occurred,

私たちは まるで死をもたらす機械のように

complicit in causing further misery

より多くの悲劇を 生み出してしまいました

少数の残忍な指導者の 私利私欲のために

for the selfish benefit of the cruel few.

So over time,

しかし

a very long time,

長い時が過ぎ

I opened my eyes.

私は目が覚めたのです

I began to dare

私は目をそらさずに

真実と向き合い始めました

to face the truth,

to think,

それまでの人生で出会った

to face the hard questions.

自分への問いについて 考えはじめました

I got in touch with my soul.

そして自らの魂に触れました

What have I learned?

That people who engage in violent jihadism,

暴力的なジハーディズムに 参加する人々や

that people who are drawn to these types of extremisms,

そのような原理主義に 傾倒する人々は

are not that different to everyone else.

普通の人となんら 変わらないのです

But I believe such people can change.

私は 彼らも変われる と信じています

彼らも心を取り戻し 癒されることができます

They can regain their hearts and restore them

そのために 人としての 価値を知る必要があります

by filling them with human values that heal.

辛い現実から目を背ける時

When we ignore the realities,

we discover that we accept what we are told without critical reflection.

人は誰か言われたことを 鵜呑みにしてしまうものです

And we ignore the gifts and advantages that many of us would cherish

そして人は 人生の中のいかなる時でも

even for a single moment in their lives.

大切にしていたはずのものを 無視してしまうのです

I engaged in actions I thought were correct.

私は正しいことを していると思っていました

But now I began to question how I knew what I knew.

ですが 今はなぜそう思ったのか 考え始めています

I endlessly told others to accept the truth,

私は人々に 真実を受け入れよと 繰り返し説きました

but I failed to give doubt its rightful place.

しかし それが正しいのか 省みることをしませんでした

This conviction that people can change is rooted in my experience,

人は変われるという確信は 私自身の経験 すなわち

my own journey.

人生の旅の中で得たものです

Through wide reading,

多くの本を読み

reflecting,

反省し

深く考え 自分を知り

contemplation, self-knowledge,

私は気が付きました

I discovered,

I realized that Islamists' world of us and them is false and unjust.

私と 仲間たちが築こうとした イスラムの世界は偽物で不当なものだったと

Through considering the uncertainties in all that we had asserted,

私たちが信じて疑わなかった

神聖で 揺るぎない真実に

to the inviolable truths,

incontestable truths,

疑問をさしはさむことで

I developed a more nuanced understanding.

私はもっと柔軟に 考えられるようになりました

I realized that in a world crowded with variation and contradiction,

変化や矛盾で満ちた この世界では

foolish preachers,

かつての私のような

愚かな伝道師は

only foolish preachers like I used to be,

see no paradox in the myths and fictions they use to assert authenticity.

彼らが真実と説く神話や作り話の 矛盾に目を向けることはありません

私は 自分を知ることや

So I understood the vital importance of self-knowledge,

political awareness

政治について知ること

そして 一人一人の 社会との関わり方や行動が

and the necessity for a deep and wide understanding

of our commitments and our actions,

他人へどんな影響を与えるか 深く認識することが

how they affect others.

どれほど重要なことか 気付きました

So my plea today to everyone,

私は今日 皆さんに 心からお願いをします

especially those who sincerely believe in Islamist jihadism ...

特に イスラム聖戦主義を 信じている人々へ

refuse dogmatic authority;

独善的な権威を拒否しましょう

let go of anger, hatred and violence;

怒りや憎しみや 暴力を捨てましょう

残虐で道義に反した行いを 正当化せず

learn to right wrongs

without even attempting to justify cruel, unjust and futile behavior.

過ちを正すことを学びましょう

Instead create a few beautiful and useful things

自分たちの命を超えて生きる

that outlive us.

少しでも 美しくて 役に立つものを創りましょう

Approach the world, life,

愛をもって

世界へ 人生へ歩みよりましょう

with love.

心を高め

Learn to develop

or cultivate your hearts

耕すために

to see goodness, beauty and truth in others and in the world.

世界や 人々の 優しさや美しさ そして真実を知るために学びましょう

そうすればより大切にできるのです 自分自身を

That way we do matter more to ourselves ...

to each other,

お互いを

人々の繋がりを

to our communities

and, for me, to God.

そして私は　神を

This is jihad --

それがジハードです

my true jihad.

私の真のジハードです
