When you have a job that pays you enough to cover your basic needs,

your bills and even some more to spend,

or, even better, fulfilled.

And it seems unthinkable when you wake up and say

you're going to leave a job like that to pursue a passion.

And that was my dilemma six years ago.

６年前 これが私のジレンマでした

I had a comfortable job, I lived a comfortable life,

私は快適な仕事に就いていて 快適な生活を送っていました

and people expected me to be fulfilled,

周りの人達からは 充実していると思われていました

but I wasn't.

でも 違いました

There was something in me that wanted more.

私には もっとしたいことがあったのです

There was a misalignment between the things I did on a daily basis

私が日頃していたことと

and the things that I deeply cared about.

心を深く動かされることとの間には ズレがありました

And so I decided to quit

そのため 私は仕事を辞め

and explore the possibility of bringing this passion into my daily routine.

日常生活にパッションを取り入れる 可能性を探ることにしました

And the thing about finding your passion

自分のパッションを見つけるのは

is that it's not straightforward.

簡単ではないのです

Even for people with money and degrees,

お金や学位を持っている人でも

they still struggle to identify their passion.

パッションを特定することは 難しいのです

And here I was as a 30-year-old,

そんな中 30歳の私は

talking about finding my passion

パッションを見つけ

and turning it into a career.

キャリアにすると口にしていました

Literally, people told me,

はっきりと人々は言いました

"You don't talk about passion until you've made enough money --

(Laughter)

or at least until you're ready to retire."

少なくとも 引退する準備が出来てからだね」

Because there's a notion that looking inward

なぜなら 自分の内側に目を向け

and finding the things that give us pleasure and fulfillment

喜びと充実感を与えてくれるものを探すことは

is a luxury that only the rich can enjoy,

金持ちの贅沢か

or a pleasure that only the retired can indulge in.

引退後の楽しみだと 思われているからです

Which made me wonder:

私は これに疑問を感じました

Is passion only for the rich,

パッションは お金持ちや

or an experience only the retired can enjoy?

引退後にしか経験出来ない 楽しみなのか？

For many of us, we've been led to believe

多くの人は こう信じ込まされています

that life is a race of survival.

「人生は生存競争だ」と

We've been conditioned to see ourselves as survivors

自分は生き残った者だと捉え

that must do everything in our power to survive.

生き残ることに全力を尽くすべきだと 思い込まされています

In Africa, we're nurtured to go through school, cram and pass,

アフリカでは 学校に行って 知識を詰め込み 試験に合格して

in the hope that you get a job after.

職に就けるよう 育てられます

And if you do, stick at it no matter how much it sucks.

一旦就職したら 辞めたりしません どんなに酷い仕事でもね

(Laughter)

Until you get a better offer or you're asked to retire.

もっといい仕事が見つかるか 引退を勧められるまで 辞めません

And as a dropout,

私は中退者なので

I knew that I was not entitled to anything.

自分には何の権利もないと 分かっていました

Every opportunity was a privilege.

どんなチャンスも特権でした

And so when I thought about quitting,

ですから 仕事を辞めようと思った時

it was a huge risk.

それは 大きなリスクでした

I was given two alternatives,

私にはアフリカで一般的な ２つの選択肢がありました

which are the most popular in Africa.

The first one is sign up for any course at a vocational institution and do it.

１つ目は 職業訓練校に 申し込み 通うこと

My second option, settle for any job offer you can get,

２つ目は 何でもいいので とにかく仕事に就くこと

no matter the working conditions,

どんなに労働条件が悪くても

and do it.

とにかく働くこと

That probably explains why we have so many of our young people

おそらくこのために 沢山のアフリカの若者が

being trafficked in search of greener pastures.

好条件を求めるあまり 人身売買に巻き込まれるのでしょう

I opted for the first option.

私は １つ目の選択肢を選びました

I did look at a couple vocational institutions

職業訓練校を幾つか検討しました

in the hope that I would find a course that resonated with my persona,

私にぴったりくるコースを見つけ

my dream and my aspiration.

夢や希望を実現したいと思いました

I was disappointed to learn that there was no room for misfits like me

私のようなはみ出し者の居場所は 訓練校にはないのだと知り 失望しました

in these institutions.

The education system in many parts of the world

世界の多くの地域にある教育制度は

has been designed around preselected options

予め決められた選択肢に沿って 組み立てられており

that young people are expected to fit in or risk becoming misfits.

若者は そこに適応しないと はみ出し者とされてしまいます

And so going through school, I was nurtured and conditioned

学校教育を通じて 培われ 身につけたのは

to think in the straight line and stay within the straight line.

与えられた直線上で考え そこからはみ出さないことでした

But when I dropped out, I discovered a world of possibilities.

でも 中退したら 無数の可能性を発見したのです

I knew I could be anything, I could study anything,

私は何にでもなれるんだ 何でも勉強出来るんだと知り

and so I leveraged free online courses.

無料のオンライン・コースを活用しました

That's how I built my CV, got into employment

履歴書に書けることを習得し 職業に就き

and worked for eight years.

８年間働きました

And after eight years,

８年経って こう自分に言いました

I told myself there must be more to life

人生 これだけじゃないはずだ

than just going through the routines of life.

日常生活のルーチンを こなすだけが人生じゃない

So in 2014, I started an organization called Kyusa

そこで2014年に Kyusaという 団体を立ち上げました

where we are working with out-of-school youth

就学していない若者と一緒に活動し

and empowering them to turn their passions

そして彼らを力づけて

into profitable, scalable and sustainable businesses.

パッションを 収益性があり 拡大可能で 持続可能なビジネスに変えるのです

Now, when we talk about passion,

パッションの話をすると

one of the most common questions that people ask is, "What is passion?

いちばんよく聞かれる質問は

「パッションって何？ どうやって見つければいいの？」です

How do I even find it?"

And in the simplest definition,

最も簡単な定義は

passion is a collection of your life experiences

パッションとは 人生経験の積み重ねで

that give you the deepest sense of fulfillment.

心からの充実感を 感じさせてくれるものです

And to identify your passion, you need to look inward.

パッションを特定するためには 自分の内面を探ることです

So we use two reflective questions.

そのために 自分に２つの質問をします

The first question we ask is,

最初の質問は

"If you had all the time and the money in the world,

「世界中の時間とお金を手に入れたら 何をして過ごしますか？」

what would you spend your time doing?"

It sounds like a very simple question,

簡単な質問だと思うかもしれませんが

but many people struggle to answer this question

答えを出すのに苦労する人が多いです

because they've just never thought about it.

なぜなら 考えたことがないからです

The second question we ask

２つ目の質問は

is, "What makes you happy

「あなたは何に幸福感を感じますか？

or gives you the deepest sense of fulfillment?"

あるいは 心から充実感を感じるのは どんなことですか？」

Now, you would assume that we all know what makes us happy,

どんなことで幸せを感じるか 誰でも知っていると思いますよね

but it's also interesting to note that so many people have no idea

でも これも面白いことに 幸せをもたらすものが何か

what makes them happy,

全く分からない人が沢山います

because they are so busy going through the routines of life,

生活のルーチンをこなすことで手一杯で

they've never stopped to look inward.

立ち止まって 心の内側を覗いたことがないからです

And so identifying the things that give us a deep sense of fulfillment

心から充実感を感じる物事

and the things that give us deep joy

深い喜びを感じる物事

are thoughts that begin to direct us in the direction of our passion.

それらが分かれば 自分のパッションの道標になるのです

And just in case you're wondering

そして もし

what your answers are to those two questions,

先ほどの２つの問いに 答えあぐねるなら

I invite you to sit with these questions later and just reflect about it.

これらの問いについて 後程 じっくりと考えてください

However, I am also aware

とはいえ 私は分かっています

that passion alone cannot guarantee success in life.

パッションだけで 人生で成功する保証はありません

And I should note

それから

that not every passion can become a career.

パッションが必ずしも キャリアに繋がるわけでもありません

For passion to become a career,

パッションをキャリアにするためには

it must be coupled with the right set of skills, conditioning and positioning.

適切な技能や条件 差別化などと 組み合わせる必要があります

So when we get our young people to look inward,

若い人に自分の内面を 見つめるように言う時には

we also ask them what skills do you have,

どんなスキルがあり

what talents do you have, what experience do you have

どんな才能があり どんな経験があるのかも 聞き

that you can use to build a niche in the marketplace.

市場で適所を構築するために役立てます

But more than that, we also look at the market trends,

でもそれ以上に大切なのは 市場のトレンドを見ることです

because it doesn't matter how much you love and enjoy it.

どんなに好きで楽しくても

If nobody wants it or is willing to pay for it,

誰も欲しいと思わなかったり お金を払ってくれなかったりすれば

it can't be a career.

キャリアにはなりません

It's just a hobby.

単なる趣味です

And the third thing we look at is how do you position yourself?

３つ目に検討するのは 差別化です

Who are you targeting? Who do you want to sell to?

ターゲットは誰なのか？ 誰に売りたいのか？

Why would they want to buy from you?

どうしてあなたから 買いたいと思うのか？

And so the combination of the three is what enables you to move

つまり この３つが 組み合わさることにより

from just a passion to a business.

パッションがビジネスになるのです

And many of our young people have been able to turn their ideas

多くの若い人達が 自分のアイディアや

and burning desires into profitable businesses

自分が本当にしたいことを

収益性のあるビジネスや 社会事業に出来ました

or social enterprises,

and they're not just creating jobs,

単に雇用を創出するだけではなく

but they are solving societal challenges.

社会問題を解決しているのです

I'll share with you two examples.

２つの事例をご紹介します

One of them is Esther.

１人目はエスターです

I met Esther two years ago.

エスターに出会ったのは２年前です

She had been out of school for two years,

彼女は学校を辞めて ２年経っていて

and she had been deeply affected by her dropping out.

中退したことで 深く悩んでいました

As a result, she had experienced severe depression

その結果 重いうつ状態になり

to a point where she attempted to take her own life several times.

自殺を試みるほどでした 何度もです

Her friends and family didn't know what to do for her.

友人や家族は どうすべきか分からず

They simply prayed for her.

彼女のために ただ祈りました

When I met Esther and I started to converse with her,

私はエスターに会って 彼女と話を始めた際に

I asked her a simple question.

簡単な質問をしました

I said, "If you had all the time and the money in the world,

「もし 世界中の時間とお金を手に入れたら 何をしますか？」

what would you do?"

Without thinking or hesitation,

彼女は考えることも躊躇うこともなく

her eyes lit up and she began to tell me

目を輝かせて 語り始めたのです

how she wanted to change the lives of young people.

若い人達の人生を変えたいと

She wanted to restore hope and dignity to other teenagers

彼女は10代の人達の希望と尊厳を 取り戻したかったのです

by helping them make informed decisions about life.

人生に関して納得して決定できるように 支援することによってです

I was certain of the fact that this burning desire in her

私は確信しました 彼女の強い思いは抑えられないと

was unquenchable.

And so we worked with Esther to put a framework around this desire.

エスターと力を合わせ 彼女の意欲に 枠組みを作りました

Today, she runs a social enterprise in her village,

現在 彼女は自分の村で 社会事業を営んでいます

raising awareness about substance abuse, mental health, sexual reproductive health

薬物乱用や精神衛生 性と生殖に関する健康の認識を広め

and is helping other school dropouts acquire vocational skills,

学校を中退した人々の 職業に必要な技術習得を支援し

so they can make a living for themselves.

自活できるようにしています

Esther turned 20 this year,

エスターは 今年20歳になり

and for the last two years, she has organized an annual teen fest

この２年間は年１回 10代向けのイベントを企画しました

that brings together over 500 teenagers.

500人を超える10代の若者が 一堂に会します

(Applause)

Young people that are able to network and collaborate

若い人達が色々なプロジェクトで ネットワークを広げ協働し

on different projects,

but more importantly to meet professionals they would otherwise never have met.

何よりも 他では出会えないような 専門家に会えるのです

This is all engineered by a girl that believed the world had no room for her,

世界に居場所がないと信じていた少女が 一人でこれをすべて企画しました

that without education she would never amount to anything.

教育を受けていなかった彼女は 何も出来ないと思っていたのです

But by looking inward and tapping into a burning desire,

自分の内面を見つめ 強い意欲を引き出し

putting structure around it,

その意欲に枠組みを与えることにより

it has become a model that not only changed her life

お手本を作り 彼女自身の人生のみならず

but is transforming the lives of hundreds of young people every year.

毎年 何百人もの若者の 人生を変えているのです

My other example is Musa.

もう１人の事例は ムサです

Musa is a natural artistic guy.

ムサは生まれながらのアーティストです

He's the kind that would look at any design and replicate it with ease.

彼は どんなデザインも 見るだけで簡単に真似できます

And so he seeks to recognize that ability in him.

だから その自分の能力の価値を 認めようとしています

When I met Musa, he was doing all kinds of crafts --

私が会った時のムサは 色々な工芸品を作っていました

bags, belts, wallets --

バッグ ベルト 財布などです

but it was more of a part-time thing.

でも パートタイムのような感じでした

Or sometimes, if he was really broke and needed to make quick money,

本当にお金が無くなり 直ぐに必要な時には

then he would come up with a design and sell it.

デザインを思いついては それを売っていました

But he had never thought of it as a business.

でも ビジネスという捉え方は したことがありませんでした

We started working with Musa,

ムサとの協力を開始し

helping him shift his mindset from a hobby to a business

趣味からビジネスに 考えを変える手助けをし

and beginning to rethink how he can make products that he could sell

売れる製品をどう作るかを 改めて考え始めました

and even be able to scale.

事業規模の拡大の仕方もです

Musa makes some of the most amazing bags I've ever seen,

ムサが作るバッグは 私がこれまで見た中で 何本かの指に入る素晴らしさです

and over the last one year, Musa's business has grown.

この１年間 ムサのビジネスは成長しました

He has been recognized in different places.

各地で認められました

Currently, he's talking about exporting to developed countries.

今や 先進国への輸出も考えています

Musa, like any other dropout,

ムサもまた中退者だったので

believed that without academic credentials,

学歴がない自分は

he wouldn't amount to anything.

何も出来ないと信じていました

He thought the talent he had was nothing

自分には才能なんてないと 考えていました

simply because he did not have an academic paper to define him.

卒業証書がないために 自分はダメなんだと思っていたのです

But by looking inward and finding that what he had was the greatest asset

でも内面を見つめ すごい能力があると気づき

and supporting him to turn it into a business,

彼を支援して それをビジネスにしました

he's not just living -- he's thriving.

彼は生計を立てるどころか 大繁盛しているのです

The thing about looking inward is that it can be scary,

自分の内を見つめることは 怖いかもしれません

especially if you're doing it for the first time.

初めての時は なおさらです

But the truth is you never truly start living

でも 本当の意味で 生き始めるためには

until you learn to live from the inside out.

内に秘めた本心を 表に出して 生きる術を学ぶしかないのです

And in unlocking potential, we need to look inward to identify

可能性を解き放つためには 自分の内に目を向け

the things that give us a deep sense of fulfillment,

心からの充実感を与えてくれるものを 特定する必要があります

the things that give us the deepest joy,

最も深い喜びは 何なのか

and then weave them into the patterns of our daily routines.

それを決まりきった日常に織り込みます

In so doing, we cease to work and we start to live.

そうするなかで私たちは 働くのを止め 生き始めるのです

And the thing about living is that you never have to retire or to resign.

生きていくっていうことには 退職も辞職もありません

(Laughter)

And so as you think about unlocking potential for ourselves,

自分自身や若い人達 子供達の可能性を 解き放つことを考える時

for our young people, for our children,

let's not condition them to look outward

外を見るのではなく

but condition them to look inward

内を見ることを身につけ

to tap into who they are and bring that self into what they do every day.

本当の自分の力を 日頃の生活に生かしましょう

When you cease to work and you live,

仕事をするのを止め 生きることを始め

when passion becomes a career,

パッションがキャリアになれば

you don't just excel,

周りから抜きん出るどころか

you become unstoppable.

あなたは 誰にも止められません
