There are a few things that all of us need.

As a trans person who doesn't fit neatly into the gender binary,

if I could change the world tomorrow

to make it easier for me to navigate,

生きやすくできる力があれば

the very first thing I would do

まず一番最初に

is blink and create single stall, gender-neutral bathrooms

その全能の力を使って 性別のない個室トイレを

in all public places.

公共の場所 すべてに作ります

Trans people and trans issues,

トランスジェンダーや それ特有の問題は

they've been getting a lot of mainstream media attention lately.

近頃 メディアでもたくさん 取り上げられています

And this is a great and necessary thing,

but most of that attention has been focused

on a very few individuals,

ごく少数の人々ばかりで

most of whom are kinda rich

and pretty famous,

and probably don't have to worry that much anymore about where they're going to pee

in between classes at their community college,

or where they're going to get changed into their gym strip

at their public high school.

Fame and money insulates these television star trans people

from most of the everyday challenges

日常の問題から だいたい守ってくれますが

that the rest of us have to tackle on a daily basis.

Public bathrooms.

They've been a problem for me since as far back as I can remember,

first when I was just a little baby tomboy

and then later as a masculine-appearing, predominantly estrogen-based organism.

Now, today as a trans person, public bathrooms and change rooms

are where I am most likely to be questioned or harassed.

I've often been verbally attacked behind their doors.

I've been hauled out by security guards with my pants still halfway pulled up.

ズボンを上げきってない状態で 警備員に引きずり出されたりもしました

I've been stared at, screamed at, whispered about,

ジロジロ見る人 悲鳴をあげる人 ヒソヒソ話す人たちも

and one time I got smacked in the face by a little old lady's purse

that from the looks of the shiner I took home that day

I am pretty certain contained at least 70 dollars of rolled up small change

and a large hard candy collection.

And I know what some of you are thinking,

皆さんの考えていること わかりますよ

and you're mostly right.

I can and do just use the men's room most of the time these days.

But that doesn't solve my change room dilemmas, does it?

でもそれじゃ 更衣室の問題は解決しませんよね

And I shouldn't have to use the men's room because I'm not a man.

それに 男子トイレは使わなくていいはず 男じゃないんですから

I'm a trans person.

私はトランスジェンダーなんです

And now we've got these fearmongering politicians

そして 最近は わざと不安を煽って しつこく

「トイレ法」を通そうとする 政治家がいるって

that keep trying to pass these bathroom bills.

Have you heard about these?

知ってましたか？

They try to legislate to try and force people like myself

法律を作って 私みたいな人に 強制的に

to use the bathroom that they deem most appropriate

彼らが考える最も妥当なトイレを 使わせようとしています

according to the gender I was assigned at birth.

出生時に与えられた性別に 従わせようというわけ

And if these politicians ever get their way,

もし この政治家たちの 思い通りになってしまったら—

in Arizona or California or Florida

or just last week in Houston, Texas,

or Ottawa,

オタワでも起こっています—

well then, using the men's room will not be a legal option for me either.

And every time one of these politicians brings one of these bills to the table,

毎回 こういった法案が出てくる度に

I can't help but wonder, you know,

すごく言いたくなることがあります

just who will and exactly how would we go about enforcing laws like these. Right?

いったい誰が どうやって こんな法律 遵守させようってわけ？

Panty checks?

下着チェックでしょうか？

Really.

ありえないでしょ

Genital inspections outside of bath change rooms at public pools?

市民プールの更衣室の前で 性器検査するんですか？

There's no legal or ethical or plausible way

合法に 道徳的に もっともらしく

to enforce laws like these anyway.

こんな法律を遵守させる方法 どうせ 存在しないのですから

They exist only to foster fear

不安を助長し

トランスジェンダー嫌いを 広めるだけの法律です

and promote transphobia.

They don't make anyone safer.

誰のことも守ってくれません

But they do for sure make the world more dangerous for some of us.

でも 社会が 一部の人々にとって もっと危険な場所になるのは確かです

And meanwhile, our trans children suffer.

そして その間にも トランスジェンダーの子供たちは苦しみます

They drop out of school, or they opt out of life altogether.

学校を中退したり 生きることすら 諦める子もいます

Trans people, especially trans and gender-nonconforming youth

トランスジェンダーの中でも 特に いわゆる性別に当てはまらない若者は

face additional challenges when accessing pools and gyms,

プールやスポーツジムを利用するとき 余計な問題にぶち当たりますが

but also universities,

それだけでなく 大学でも

hospitals, libraries.

病院でも 図書館でもそうです

Don't even get me started on how they treat us in airports.

空港で私たちがどんな扱いをされるか 話し出したら長いですよ

If we don't move now

今 行動を起こし—

to make sure that these places

こういった場所を

are truly open and accessible to everyone,

誰でも利用できる 真に開かれた場所にできないのなら

then we just need to get honest

はっきり言って もう—

and quit calling them public places.

「公共の場所」と呼ぶのをやめるべきです

We need to just admit

そして ただ認めましょう

that they are really only open for people

who fit neatly into one of two gender boxes,

which I do not.

I never have.

And this starts very early.

I know a little girl. She's the daughter of a friend of mine.

She's a self-identified tomboy.

I'm talking about cowboy boots

カウボーイブーツに始まり

and Caterpillar yellow toy trucks and bug jars, the whole nine yards.

おもちゃの黄色いトラックに 虫カゴに 何もかもが男の子の趣味

One time I asked her what her favorite color was.

好きな色を訊ねたら

She told me, "Camouflage."

返ってきたのは「迷彩色」でした

(Laughter)

So that awesome little kid,

こんな素敵な子が

she came home from school last October

去年の10月

from her half day of preschool

幼稚園で半日過ごした後 パンツを濡らして帰ってきました

with soggy pants on because the other kids at school were harassing her

女の子用トイレを使おうとして 他の子たちに からかわれたそうです

when she tried to use the girls' bathroom.

And the teacher had already instructed her to stay out of the boys' bathroom.

男の子用トイレを使うのは 既に 先生に禁止されており

And she had drank two glasses of that red juice

その日は ジュースを２杯も 飲んでしまったそうです

at the Halloween party,

ハロウィーンパーティだったので

and I mean, who can resist that red juice, right? It's so good.

きれいな赤い色した美味しいジュース 誰だって飲んじゃいますよね

And she couldn't hold her pee any longer.

そして おしっこを我慢しきれず 漏らしてしまったのです

Her and her classmates were four years old.

その子も 他の園児たちも たったの４歳でした

They already felt empowered enough

その歳で既に 園児たちは

to police her use of the so-called public bathrooms.

その子の いわゆる「公共」トイレ使用を 見張るほど強気でした

She was four years old.

４歳にして

She had already been taught the brutal lesson

その子は既に 残酷な現実を学んだのです

that there was no bathroom door at preschool

幼稚園のトイレのドアには

with a sign on it that welcomed people like her.

自分みたいな人を歓迎するサインは ついていないんだということ

She'd already learned that bathrooms were going to be a problem,

トイレが今後も 自分にとって 問題であり続けるということ

and that problem started with her

そして 問題の出どころは自分で

and was hers alone.

自分にしかない問題だということ

So my friend asked me to talk to her little daughter,

友人に そんな幼い娘と 話してやってくれと頼まれて—

and I did.

話しました

I wanted to tell her

こう言ってあげたかった

that me and her mom were going to march on down

「お母さんと一緒に 幼稚園に乗り込んで

and talk to that school, and the problem was going to go away,

話をつけてきてあげるから もう心配しなくてよくなるよ」

but I knew that wasn't true.

でも嘘は言えなかった

I wanted to tell her that it was all going to get better when she got older,

「大きくなったら 何もかも良くなるよ」 って言いたかった

but I couldn't.

でも言えなかった

So I asked her to tell me the story of what had happened,

だから 何があったのか いきさつを話してもらいました

asked her to tell me how it made her feel.

どんな気持ちになったか 話してもらいました

"Mad and sad,"

「腹立ったし 悲しかった」と—

she told me.

その子は言いました

So I told her

そこで 私は—

that she wasn't alone

「君は一人じゃないよ」と話し

and that it wasn't right what had happened to her,

「ひどいことをされたね 」と話しました

and then she asked me if I had ever peed in my pants before.

すると「おしっこ 漏らしたことある？」 と訊かれました

I said yes, I had,

私は「あるよ—

but not for a really long time.

でも 小さい頃の話ね」と

(Laughter)

Which of course was a lie,

当然 これは嘘ですが

because you know how you hit, like, 42 or 43,

だって ほら 42、43歳くらいにもなると

and sometimes you just, I don't know, you pee a little bit

時々 あるじゃないですか くしゃみや咳で ちょっと漏れたり

when you cough or sneeze,

when you're running upstairs, or you're stretching.

階段を駆け上がるときや ストレッチ中とか

Don't lie.

正直にどうぞ

It happens. Right?

漏れること ありますよね？

She doesn't need to know that, I figure.

でも その子は 知らなくていいですよね

(Laughter)

（笑）

I told her, when you get older, your bladder is going to grow bigger, too.

だから「大きくなったら 膀胱も大きくなるんだよ—

When you get old like me,

私みたいに 歳取ったら

you're going to be able to hold your pee for way longer,

もっとずっと長い間 我慢できるようになるよ」と

I promised her.

約束しました

"Until you can get home?"

「おうちに着くまで？」

she asked me.

そう訊かれました

I said, "Yes,

「そうだよ—

until you can get home."

おうちに着くまでだよ」

She seemed to take some comfort in that.

その子はそれを聞いて 少し安心した風でした

So let's just build some single stall, gender-neutral bathrooms

というわけで 性別なしの個室トイレ 作っちゃいましょうよ

with a little bench for getting changed into your gym clothes.

運動着に着替えられる 小さな椅子もつけましょう

We can't change the world overnight

子供たちのために 世界を一晩で変えられるかって—

for our children,

それは無理だけど

but we can give them a safe and private place

そんな世界から逃れられるような 安全な 個室は作ってやれる

to escape that world,

if only for just a minute.

たとえ １分間だけだとしてもね

This we can do.

これなら できます

So let's just do it.

だから やりましょうよ

And if you are one of those people who is sitting out there right now

今この瞬間にも その辺によくいる人みたいに

already coming up with a list of reasons in your head why this is not a priority,

これを優先すべきじゃない理由が いくつも頭に浮かんでいる人

or it's too expensive,

金がかかりすぎると思っている人

or telling yourself that giving a trans person a safe place to pee

トランスジェンダーの人に 安全なトイレや 着替え場所を与えることは

or get changed in

supports a lifestyle choice that you feel offends your morality,

自分の倫理観に反する生き方を 支持することになるとか

or your masculinity,

自分の男らしさを損なうとか

or your religious beliefs,

宗教観に反するという人

then let me just appeal

なら あなたの—

心の片隅に ちょっと訴えさせてください

to the part of your heart that probably, hopefully,

多分 普通の人たちのことは 気にかけているでしょう？

does care about the rest of the population.

If you can't bring yourself to care enough about people like me,

もし 私みたいな人々を思いやるのが どうしても無理だというのなら

then what about women and girls

自分の体型のことで悩む 女性や女の子はどうでしょうか？

with body image issues?

What about anyone with body image stuff going on?

同様の悩みを持つ人々は？

What about that boy at school who is a foot shorter than his classmates,

同級生より 頭１つ低い男の子は？

whose voice still hasn't dropped yet? Hey?

周りより声変わりが遅れていることを 気にしているとしたら？

Oh, grade eight,

そんな中学生を思いやれない人は

what a cruel master you can be.

教師なら さぞ残酷な先生なんでしょうね

Right?

でしょ？

What about people with anxiety issues?

不安神経症を持つ人々のことは？

What about people with disabilities or who need assistance in there?

障害を持っている人や トイレで介助を必要とする人のことは？

What about folks with bodies who, for whatever reason,

理由がなんであるにしても

don't fit into the mainstream idea of what a body should look like?

大多数の人が考えるような 望ましい体つきをしていない人々は？

How many of us still feel shy

人前で服を脱ぐのを 未だに恥ずかしく感じたり

or afraid to disrobe in front of our peers,

勇気が出ない人が どれだけいるでしょうか？

and how many of us allow that fear

どれだけの人が そのせいで

to keep us from something as important

体を使った運動のような大事なことから 遠ざかっていることでしょうか？

as physical exercise?

Would all those people not benefit

こういう人たち 誰もが—

from these single stall facilities?

個室トイレや更衣室から 恩恵を受けると思いませんか？

We can't change transphobic minds overnight,

トランスジェンダーを嫌悪する心を 一晩では変えられません

but we can give everybody

でも すべての人々に

a place to get changed in

着替える場所を与えることはできます

so that we can all get to work

そうすれば すべてが 上手くまわって—

making the world safer

私たち 皆にとって もっと

for all of us.

安全な社会を作っていけます
