The Maldives, as I'm sure you're aware, are a chain of islands

off the southwest coast of India here.

Capital, Malé, where I live.

Actually, sitting here today in Mysore,

we're closer to Malé than we are to Delhi, for example.

位置的にはデリーよりもマレに近いところです

If you're in IT, India, obviously, is the place to be at the moment.

インドのIT従事者にはここが打ってつけですが

But if you're a marine biologist, Maldives is not such a bad place to be.

海洋生物学者にはモルジブも悪くありません

And it has been my home these years.

最近はここが我が家になっています

For those of you who've been there, fantastic coral reefs,

訪れた方はご存知だと思いますが 素晴しい

fantastic diving, fantastic snorkeling.

I spend as much of my time as possible

investigating the marine life.

I study fish,

also the bigger things, whales and dolphins.

This is a blue whale. We have blue whales

in the waters around here, off Maldives,

around the waters of India. You can see them off Kerala.

And, in fact, we're very lucky in this region.

One of the best places in the world to see blue whales

is here in this region.

In Sri Lanka, if you go down to the south coast of Sri Lanka,

北東季節風の季節にスリランカの

during the northeast monsoon season,

南の海岸を訪れると簡単に

you can see blue whales very, very easily.

シロナガスクジラを見ることができます

It's probably the best place in the world to see them.

ここは世界で最高の観測スポットでしょうね

Now, when I talk about the northeast monsoon season,

北東季節風の話をすれば皆さんの多くは

I'm sure many of you here know exactly what I mean,

何のことだかお分かりと思いますが

but perhaps some of you are not quite so sure.

詳しくない方もおられるでしょうから

I need to explain a little bit about monsoons.

モンスーンについて少し説明しましょう

Now, monsoon, the root of the word "monsoon"

"モンスーン"という言葉は"季節"

comes from the word "season."

という単語に由来しており つまり一種の―

So, it's just a season. And there are two seasons in most of South Asia.

季節なのです 南アジアには大抵２つの季節があります

And in the summer India heats up, gets very hot.

夏になるとインドはとても暑くなります

Hot air rises, and air is drawn in off the sea to replace it.

暖かい大気が上昇すると海上の空気が引き寄せられます

And the way it works is, it comes from the southwest.

こうして南西から風が入り込みます

It comes off the ocean here and is drawn up towards India.

ここの海域からインドへ向かってやってきます

So it comes from the southwest. It's a southwest monsoon.

これは南西から来るので南西季節風と呼ばれています

Picks up moisture as it crosses the ocean.

海洋を渡る際に水分を吸い上げることで

That's what brings the monsoon rain.

モンスーンは雨を降らすのです

And then in the winter things cool down.

冬になると大気は冷やされて

High pressure builds over India.

高気圧がインドを覆います

And the whole system goes into reverse.

全システムが逆転します

So, the wind is now coming from the northeast

つまり風はインドの北東から

out of India, across the Indian Ocean,

吹いて来てインド洋を越えて

this way towards Africa.

アフリカ方面に向かいます

Keep that in mind.

Now, I'm a marine biologist, but I'm actually

さて私は海洋生物学者ですが

a bit of an old fashioned naturalist, I suppose.

実は少し古風な自然研究家なのです

I'm interested in all sorts of things, almost everything that moves,

including dragonflies. And I'm actually

going to talk, this afternoon, about dragonflies.

トンボについてお話します

This is a very beautiful species, it's called the Oriental Scarlet.

これはとても美しい種でOriental Scarletと呼ばれています

And one thing you need to know about dragonflies,

トンボについて１つ知っておいて頂きたい

one important thing,

重要なポイントとは 彼らは

is that they lay their eggs in fresh water.

卵を淡水に産むということです

They need fresh water to breed.

産卵には淡水が必要なのです

They lay the eggs into fresh water.

彼らは淡水に卵を産み

Little larvae hatch out in fresh water.

幼生は淡水で孵化します

They feed on other little things. They feed on mosquito larvae.

彼らは他の小さな蚊の幼虫などを食べます

So, they're very important.

とても重要な役割を果たしていますね

They control mosquito larvae, among other things.

蚊や他の幼虫の個体数をコントロールしています

And they grow and grow by stages. And they climb out

段階をおって成長していき水を離れ

of the water, burst out, as the adult which we see.

私たちの目にする成虫になるのです

And typically, there is a lot of variation,

but if you have a dragonfly with, say, a one year life cycle,

which is quite typical, the larva, living in the fresh water,

lives for 10 or 11 months.

And then the adult, which comes after, lives for one or two months.

So it's essentially a freshwater animal.

要するにトンボは淡水生物なのです

It really does need fresh water.

淡水が必要不可欠です

Now, the particular species of dragonfly

とりわけ話をしたい種が―

I want to talk about is this one,

こちらです　今まで見てきた

because most dragonflies, like the one we've just seen,

種は成虫として暮らす期間は

when the adult is there for its brief one or two months of life,

１、２ヶ月で短すぎて遠くには

it doesn't go very far. It can't travel very far.

飛んで行けませんね

A few kilometers, maybe, is quite typical.

多分数kmといったところでしょうか

They are very good fliers, but they don't go too far.

飛ぶのは上手ですが遠くへは行きません

But this guy is an exception.

しかしこいつは例外です

And this is called the Globe Skimmer,

Globe SkimmerもしくはWandering Glider

or Wandering Glider.

(ウスバキトンボ)と呼ばれています

And, as the name might suggest, it is found pretty much around the world.

名前の通り世界中に生息しています

It lives throughout the tropics, the Americas,

熱帯の地域 アメリカ アフリカ アジア

Africa, Asia, Australia, into the Pacific.

オーストラリア 太平洋でも見られます

And it wanders far and wide. We know that much about it.

広範囲を移動することが知られています

But it really hasn't been studied very much.

しかし十分な研究はなされてきませんでした

It's a rather mediocre looking dragonfly.

見た目はありふれたトンボですから

If you're going to study dragonflies, you want to study those really bright beautiful ones,

どうせトンボを研究するのなら 赤くてきれいなやつとか

like that red one. Or the really rare ones, the endemic endangered ones.

絶滅が危惧される とびきり珍しいやつがいいですね

This is, it seems a bit dull you know.

これでは少し物足りなさを感じますね

It's sort of dull-colored. And it's fairly common.

色も微妙ですし ありふれてますよね

And it occurs everywhere -- you know, why bother?

どこにでも生息してますし　なんで研究するのでしょう?

But if you take that attitude, you're actually missing something rather special.

しかしこんな態度ではなにかすごいことを見逃すことになります

Because this dragonfly has a rather amazing story to tell.

このトンボは驚くべき話を秘めているからです

And I feel very privileged to have stumbled across it

私はモルジブに暮らし彼らに出会えた事を

living in the Maldives.

とても誇りにも思っています

When I first went to the Maldives,

私が初めてモルジブを訪れた際は

dead keen on diving, spent as much of my time

ダイビングに魅了され できる限り水の中で

as I could in and under the water.

時間を過したいと思っていました

Didn't notice any dragonflies; maybe they were there, maybe they weren't.

トンボなど気にも留めませんでした いなかったのか?

Didn't notice them.

いたかもしれませんが気付きませんでした

But after some time, after some months, one day

しかし何ヶ月か経ったある日

as I was going out and about,

外を歩いていると突然

suddenly I noticed hundreds of dragonflies, hundreds of dragonflies.

膨大な数のトンボが目に付きました

Something like this, these are all this species Globe Skimmer.

全てこれと似たウスバキトンボでした

I didn't know at the time, but I know now,

当時は知りませんでしたが今は彼らが

they're Globe Skimmers, hundreds of them.

全てウスバキトンボだったと理解しています

And they were there for some time. And then they were gone.

あるときはそこにいて またあるときはいないのです

And I didn't think anything more of it until

私は翌年その次の年そして

the following year, when it happened again,

その次の年に再度目撃するまで

and then the year after that, and then the year after that.

彼らについて何も考えませんでした

And I was a bit slow, I didn't really take too much notice.

少し鈍く 実際大して気にかけていませんでした

But I asked some Maldivian friends and colleagues, and yes they come every year.

しかし友人や同僚に聞くと 彼らは毎年来ているそうです

And I asked people about them and yes,

そこで他の人にも聞いてみると やはり

they knew, but they didn't know anything,

トンボが来ることは知っていましたが

where they came from, or anything.

どこから来るのかなどは何も知りませんでした

And again I didn't think too much of it.

そしてこの時も深くは考えませんでした

But slowly it began to dawn on me that something

しかし徐々になにか 特別ななにかが

rather special was happening.

見え始めてきました

Because dragonflies need fresh water to breed.

トンボの産卵には淡水が必要不可欠だからです

And the Maldives, and I'm sure some of you have been there --

ここに足を運ばれた方もいると思いますが

so here is home.

ここは私の故郷 モルジブ

So, Maldives, beautiful place.

モルジブは美しいところです

(Laughter)

(笑)

It's built entirely of coral reefs.

この島は全てがサンゴ礁で出来ています

And on top of the coral reefs are sand banks.

サンゴ礁の上は砂州です

Average height, about that much above sea level.

島の平均的な高さは海面と同じくらいです

So, global warming, sea level rise, it's a real serious issue.

つまり地球温暖化 海面上昇は深刻な問題です

But I'm not going to talk about that.

今日はこの話はしませんけどね

Another important point of these sand banks

この砂州についてお話しておくべき点は

is that when it rains,

雨が降ったときには雨水は

the rainwater soaks down into the soil. So, it's gone.

土壌に浸透してなくなるということです

So, it stays under the soil.

つまり土壌の下に蓄積されます

The trees can put their roots into it.

木々は根をそこへ伸ばせます

Humans can dig holes and make a well.

人間は穴を掘り井戸を作れます

But dragonflies -- a bit tricky.

トンボにとっては少し厄介です

There is no surface fresh water.

ここには淡水の水面はありません

There are no ponds, streams, rivers, lakes,

池や小川、川、湖といったものは

nothing like that.

どこにもないのです

So, why is it that every year

それではなぜ毎年

millions of dragonflies, millions,

ここでは何百万ものトンボを

millions of dragonflies turn up?

見ることが出来るのでしょうか？

I got a little bit curious. In fact I'll stop here,

興味をそそられました では少し中断して

because I want to ask, and there is a lot of people who,

皆さんに今聞いてみたいと思います ここには

from India of course, people who grew up spending your childhood here.

幼少時代をインドで過ごした方も多くいますからね

Those of you who are Indian or spent your childhood here,

インド出身の方 もしくは幼少時代を

let me have a show of hands, who of you --

Those of you who grew up in India,

インドで育った方は幼少時に見た

do you remember in your childhood, dragonflies,

トンボです トンボの大群を覚えていますか？

swarms of dragonflies? Maybe at school,

多分小学生の頃 紐に結わえて

maybe tying little bits of string onto them?

飛ばして遊んだりしませんでしたか？

Maybe pulling bits off? I'm not asking about that.

それはいいんですけどね

You've only got to say, do you remember seeing lots of dragonflies.

ただ たくさんのトンボを見た記憶がある方はいますか?

Any hands? Any hands? Yes. Thank you. Thank you.

どうです?　はい ありがとうございました

It's a widespread phenomenon

これはモルジブを含む

throughout South Asia, including the Maldives.

南アジア中で広く起こっている現象なのです

And I got a bit curious about it.

そこで私はすこし興味を持ちました

In the Maldives -- now, in India there is plenty of water,

インドには水がいたるところにあり

so, dragonflies, yeah, of course. Why not?

もちろんトンボはたくさんいます

But in Maldives, no fresh water. So, what on Earth is going on?

しかしモルジブに淡水はありません　何が起こっているのでしょう?

And the first thing I did was started recording

最初に行ったことは彼らがモルジブに

when they turned up in the Maldives.

やってくる日付の記録でした

And there is the answer, 21st of October.

答えは10月の21日でした

Not every year, that's the average date.

毎年ではありませんが大体この時期です

So, I've been writing it down for 15 years now.

今までこの記録を15年間続けてきました

You'd think they're coming from India. It's the closest place.

インドからやって来るとお考えでしょう 近いですからね

But in October, remember, we're still in southwest monsoon,

思い出してください10月はインドもモルジブも

Maldives is still in the southwest monsoon.

南西季節風の真っ只中です

But wind is, invariably, every time, is from the west.

風はインド側からではなくインドに向かって

It's going towards India, not from India.

南西から吹いているはずです

So, are these things, how are these things getting here?

どのようにモルジブへ渡ってくるのでしょうか?

Are they coming from India against the wind?

インドから向かい風を越えて来るのですか?

Seemed a bit unlikely.

ありえそうもないですね

So, next thing I did is I got on the phone.

そこで次に私は携帯電話を活用しました

Maldives is a long archipelago.

モルジブは約800kmにわたる

It stretches about 500 miles, of course it's India here.

群島です ここはもちろんインドです

I got on the phone and emailed to friends and colleagues.

友人 同僚にメール送り電話をかけては

When do you see the dragonflies appear?

いつ頃トンボを目にしたかを尋ねました

And pretty soon, a picture started emerging.

すぐに全体像が見えてきました

In Bangalore, a colleague there sent me

バンガロールのとある同僚は大体

information for three years, average,

９月の終わり 24日頃だというメールを

24th of September, so late September.

３年間送ってくれています

Down in Trivandrum, a bit later.

少し南のトリバンドラムでは少し遅く

Far north of Maldives, a bit later.

モルジブ北部ではこれよりも遅いようです

Then Malé, then further south.

その後マレに現れ もっと南へ移り

And then the southernmost Maldives.

最南端のモルジブで目撃されます

It's pretty obvious, they're coming from India.

明らかに彼らはインドからやってきています

But they are coming 400 miles across the ocean, against the wind.

しかし向かい風の中650kmもどのようにして

How on Earth are they doing that?

飛んでくることができるのでしょうか?

I didn't know.

見当もつきませんでした

The next thing I did was I started counting dragonflies.

次に彼らの季節性や移動の周期を

I wanted to know about their seasonality,

知るために私はトンボを数えました

what time of year, this is when they first arrive,

初めての訪問なのか どの程度滞在するのか

but how long are they around for? Does that give any clues?

これらのことが謎を解く鍵になるかどうか

So, I started a very rigorous scientific process.

そこで厳密な科学的手法を用いることにしました

I had a rigorous scientific transect.

トランセクト法です

I got on my bicycle,

自転車にまたがって

and I cycled around the island of Malé.

マレ島を駆け回りました

It's about five kilometers around,

１周は５km程度です

counting the dragonflies as I go,

木や周りの人にぶつからないよう

trying not to bump into people as I'm looking in the trees.

注意しながらトンボの数を数えました

And they're here for a very short time,

彼らはここに10月から12月という

October, November, December. That's it.

とても短い期間しか滞在しないようです

And then they tail off, there's a few, but that's it.

その後は減少を始め それきりです

October, November, December. That is not the northeast monsoon season.

10月から12月は北東季節風でも

That's not the southwest season.

南西季節風の時期でもなく

That's the inter-monsoon,

モンスーンが入れ替わる

the time when the monsoon changes.

中間の時期なのです

Now, what I said was, you get the southwest monsoon going one way,

要するに南西季節風が抜けていき

and then it changes and you get the northeast monsoon going the other way.

後に北東季節風が別方向から入ってくるのです

And that sort of gives the impression you've got one air mass

１つの気団が行ったり来たりしている

going up and down, up and down. It doesn't work like that.

印象を与えますが そうではありません

What happens, actually, is there is two air masses.

実は２つの気団が混在している状態です

And there is a front between them, and the front moves.

気団には前線があり これが動いているのです

So, if you've got India here,

インドがここで前線がこちらを向くと

when the front is up above India you're into the southwest monsoon.

我々は南西季節風の中ということです

Then the front moves into the northeast monsoon.

その後前線は北東季節風へと移動します

And that front in the middle is not vertical,

この中心の前線は垂直ではなく

it's at an angle.

実は斜めになっています

So, as it comes over towards Malé

マレに近づいてくると

I'm standing in Malé underneath the front.

私は前線の下にいることになります

I can be in the southwest monsoon.

南西季節風に入ることも出来ますが

But the wind above is from the northeast monsoon.

上空の大気は北東季節風のものです

So, the dragonflies are actually coming from India on the northeast monsoon,

実は彼らはインドから北東季節風にのって来ているのです

but at an altitude at 1,000 to 2,000 meters up in the air. Incredible.

しかも高度1000 - 2000m地点ですよ 驚愕ですね

These little insects, it's the same ones we see out here [in India],

そこらで目にする２インチもしくは５cmの

two inches long, five centimeters long,

小さな昆虫ですよ 何百万という数が

flying in their millions, 400 miles across the ocean,

上空2000m地点を飛んで海を渡ります

at 2,000 meters up. Quite incredible.

距離にして約650km　驚くべきことです

So, I was quite pleased with myself. I thought wow, I've tracked this one,

「わぁ　トンボがここに来る方法を遂に突き止めたぞ」と思い

I know how they come here. Then I scratched my head a bit,

嬉しくなりました　次に頭を少し掻いて

and that's okay,

まぁそれはいいんですが

I know how they come here, but why do they come here?

方法はわかりましたが 理由はなんなのでしょうか?

What are millions of dragonflies doing, flying out over the ocean every year

明らかな悪条件にも関わらず あの何百万ものトンボは海を越えて

to their apparent doom?

毎年一体何をしているのでしょうか?

It doesn't make sense. There is nothing for them in Maldives.

つじつまが合いません モルジブには何もありませんから

What on Earth are they doing?

彼らはいったい何をしているのでしょうか?

Well, to cut a long story short,

一言で言ってしまえば

they're actually flying right across the ocean.

彼らは海洋を渡っているのです

They're making it all the way across to East Africa.

彼らは東アフリカまで移動しているのです

I know that because I have friends who work on fisheries' research vessels

私には漁業調査船で働く友人がいて彼らから

who have sent to me reports from boats out in the ocean.

報告をもらったので確かです

I know because we have reports from Seychelles,

セーシェルからも報告を受けています

which fit in as well, down here.

ここですが 妥当でしょう

And I know because

降水量に着目してみると

when you look at the rainfall,

このウスバキトンボは

these particular insects, these Globe Skimmers

雨季の水たまりの中で

breed in temporary rain water pools.

繁殖することが分かっているからです

Okay, they lay their eggs where the seasonal rains are,

雨季の地域で産卵します

the monsoon rains.

モンスーンの雨です

The larvae have to develop very quickly.

幼生は素早く成長しなくてはなりません

They only take six weeks. Instead of 11 months, they're six weeks.

他の種とは違って11ヶ月も待たずに

They're up, and they're off.

生後６週で水面から飛び立ちます

Now, here we have, in case you can't read at the back,

後ろの方が見えないと困りますので

the top is rainfall for India.

インド国内の降水量を表示しています

And we're starting in June. So this is the monsoon rain.

６月から見ましょう ここはモンスーンです

By September, October, it's drying out.

９、10月には乾季になります

Nothing for these dragonflies. There is no more seasonal rain.

産卵するための雨水はありません

They've got to go hunting for seasonal rain.

雨季を探しに移動しなくてはいけません

And they fly south. As the monsoon withdraws to the south

彼らは南に飛びます　モンスーンが南下する時期に

they come down through Karnataka, into Kerala.

And then they run out of land.

But they are incredibly good fliers. This particular species,

it can fly for thousands of kilometers.

And it just keeps going. And the wind, the northeast wind

swooshes it around and carries it off across the ocean to Africa,

where it's raining.

And they are breeding in the rains of Africa.

Now, this is southeast Africa. It makes it look like there are sort of

two breeding periods here. It's slightly more complicated than that.

What's happening is they are breeding in the monsoon rains here.

And the dragonflies you can see today

outside here, on the campus,

are the young of this generation.

They hatched out in India.

They're looking for somewhere to breed. If it rains here they'll breed.

But most of them are going to carry on. And next stop,

perhaps only four or five days away is going to be East Africa.

東アフリカです　４、５日間の旅になるでしょう

The wind will swoosh them out across here.

If they pass the Maldives they might go and have a look,

nothing there, they'll carry on.

目で確認して飛行を続けるのでしょう

Here, here, Kenya, East Africa,

ここ東アフリカのケニアでは ちょうど

they've actually just come out of a long drought.

長い干ばつから抜けたばかりです

Just last week the rains broke. The short rains broke

先週雨が遂に降り出し　短い雨が

and it's raining there now.

今も降り続いています

And the dragonflies are there. I have reports from my various contacts.

トンボはここにいると知人らから報告を受けました

The dragonflies are here now. They're breeding there.

トンボは今ここで繁殖しています

When those guys, they'll lay their eggs now.

彼らは今ここで産卵しているのでしょう

They'll hatch out in six weeks. By that time

６週間後に羽化する時には

the seasonal rains have moved on. It's not there, it's down here.

雨季は明けて南下していることでしょう

They'll fly down here. And the clever thing is

そしてここに飛んできます　賢い点は

the wind is always converging to where the rain is.

風はいつも雨の降る場所に突き当たります

The rain occurs, these are summer rains.

夏雨です

This is a summer monsoon.

夏季モンスーンです

The sun is overhead there. Summer rains in southern Africa.

太陽が照り夏の雨がアフリカ南東に降り注ぎます

The sun is overhead, maximum heating,

太陽が上がることで気温が上がり

maximum evaporation, maximum clouds,

蒸発が促進され雲が巨大化することで

maximum rainfall,

降水量が最大になります

maximum opportunities for reproduction.

絶好の繁殖期となります

Not only that, because you have this convection,

それだけでなく 対流のおかげで

you have this rising of the air

大気は持ち上げられ

where it's hot, air is drawn in.

暖かい空気が引き寄せられます

There's a convergence. So, wherever the rain is falling,

収束のため どこで雨が降っても暖かい空気は

the air is drawn towards it to replace the air that's rising.

引き寄せられ上昇する空気と入れ替わります

So, the little fellow that hatches out here,

つまりそこで羽化した彼らは

he gets up into the air, he is automatically carried

この風を利用して自動的に雨の

to where the rain is falling.

降る場所に行くことができるのです

Lay their eggs, next generation, they come up,

産卵すると次の世代が羽化し 自動的に

automatically carried to where the rain is falling.

また雨水のあるところに運ばれます

It's now back there. They come out, it's time to come back.

ここで羽化したら帰らなくてはいけません

So, in four generations, one, two, three,

４世代かかります　１代目、２代目、３代目

four and then back.

４代目で起点に戻ります。

A complete circuit of the Indian Ocean.

This is a circuit of about 16,000 kilometers.

And I only stumbled on this because I was living in Malé,

But dragonflies are not the only creatures that make the crossing.

There is more to the story.

I'm also interested in birds. And I'm familiar

with this fellow. This is a rather special bird.

It's a falcon. It's called the eastern red-footed falcon, obviously.

But it's also called the Amur Falcon.

And it's called the Amur Falcon

because it breeds in Amurland.

It's the border, much of it is the border

So, Siberia, Manchuria.

And that's where it breeds.

And if you're a falcon it's quite a nice place to be in the summer.

But it's a pretty miserable place to be in the winter.

It's, well, you can imagine.

So, as any sensible bird would do,

he moves south. They move south. The whole population moves south.

But then the being sensible stopped.

So, now they don't stop here, or even down here.

They have a little refueling stop in northeastern India.

They come to the latitude of about Mumbai or Goa.

And down here, and they winter down here [in southern Africa].

Incredible. This is the most extraordinary migration

of any bird of prey. A quite incredible migration.

And they are not the only one that makes the crossing.

They have the most incredible journey, but several make the crossing from India

This fellow is a very nice bird, this is the Pied cuckoo.

Those of you from northern India will be familiar with this.

It comes with the monsoons.

This time of year they cross back to Africa.

And this guy, the roller, a rather beautiful bird.

It's known as the Eurasian Roller. In India it occurs in the northwest,

so it's known as the Kashmir Roller.

And these birds, what I've done is I've complied all the records,

all the available records of these birds,

put them together, and found out they migrate at exactly the same time

as the dragonflies.

They make use of exactly the same winds.

to make the crossing. I know they travel at the same altitude.

It's known about the Amur Falcon. This guy, unfortunately,

one of these met an unfortunate end.

最後を迎えることになりました

He was flying off the coast of Goa,

21 years ago, 1988. October, 1988.

An Indian Navy jet was flying off Goa,

bang! In the middle of the night. Fortunately, a two engine jet

got back to base, and they pulled the remains of one of these [Eurasian Rollers] out.
