I live in Washington, D.C.,

As for myself, I have been

away from India for two decades now.

My wife is a Venezuelan.

My children are Americans.

Increasingly, I feel like a global citizen.

And yet, I am growing nostalgic

ועדיין, אני הופך לנוסטלגי יותר ויותר

about my country of birth.

למדינת הולדתי.

I want to be in India and in the U.S. at the same time.

אני רוצה להיות בהודו ובארצות הברית באותו הזמן.

My parents are not there anymore.

הורי כבר לא שם.

My brothers and sisters have moved on.

אחי ואחיותי המשיכו הלאה.

There is no real urgency for me to send money home.

אין דחיפות אמיתית בשבילי לשלוח כסף הביתה.

And yet, from time to time,

ועדיין, מפעם לפעם,

I send money home to friends,

אני שולח כסף הביתה לחברים,

to relatives, to the village,

לקרובים, לכפר,

to be there, to stay engaged —

להיות שם, להשאר מעורב -

that's part of my identity.

זהו חלק מהזהות שלי.

And, I'm still striving to be a poet

ואני עדיין שואף להיות משורר

for the hardworking migrants

למהגרים העובדים קשה

and their struggle to break free

ומאבקם לצאת לחופשי

of the cycle of poverty.
