So I tried to do a small good thing for my wife.

मैं अपनी बीवी के लिए कुछ खास करना चाहता था.

It makes me to stand here,

the fame, the money I got out of it.

So what I did, I'd gone back to my early marriage days.

I saw. "What is that?" I asked.

मैंने देख लिया. "ये क्या है?' उससे पूछा.

My wife replied, "None of your business."

बीवी ने कहा,"तुम्हारे मतलब का कुछ नहीं."

Then, being her husband, I ran behind her

मैंने भाग कर देखा, वो अपने पीछे एक

and saw she had a nasty rag cloth.

पोछे जैसा कपड़ा छुपा रही थी.

I don't even use that cloth to clean my two-wheeler.

वैसे कपड़े से तो मैं अपना टू-व्हीलर भी साफ न करूँ!

Then I understood this -- adapting that unhygienic method

तब मैं समझा वो क्या था- मासीक धर्म के दिनों से निपटने का

to manage her period days.

अस्वास्थ्यकर, अस्वच्छ तरीक़ा.

Then I immediately asked her, why are you [using] that unhygienic method?

मैंने तुरंत पूछा, तुम ये अस्वास्थ्यकर तरीक़ा क्यों अपना रही हो?

She replied, I also know about [sanitary pads],

उसने कहा,"मैं भी सैनिटरी पैड के बारे में जानती हूँ,

but myself and my sisters, if they start using that,

पर अगर मैं और मेरी बहनें उनका इस्तेमाल करने लगीं,

we have to cut our family milk budget.

तो महीने के दूध का ख़र्च काटना पड़ेगा.

Then I was shocked. What is the connection between

मुझे जैसे झटका लगा. भला दूध के ख़र्च और

using a sanitary pad and a milk budget?

सेनेटरी नैपकिन के इस्तेमाल में क्या संबंध है?

And it's called affordability.

यहाँ सीधा सवाल था ख़र्चा कर पाने की क्षमता का.

I tried to impress my new wife by offering her a packet of sanitary pads.

मैंने अपनी बीवी को खुश करने के लिए उसे सैनेटरी पैड का पैकेट देने की ठानी.

I went to a local shop, I tried to buy her a sanitary pad packet.

मैं सैनेटरी पैड ख़रीदने पास के एक दुकान में गया.

That fellow looks left and right,

दुकानदार ने दाँए-बाँए देखा,

and spreads a newspaper, rolls it into the newspaper,

एक अख़बार फैलाया, और पैकेट को उसमें लपेटकर

gives it to me like a banned item, something like that.

ऎसे देने लगा, जैसे कोई बहुत ग़लत चीज़ दे रहा हो.

I don't know why. I did not ask for a condom.

क्यों भई? मैंने कन्डोम तो नहीं मांगा था!

Then I took that pad. I want to see that. What is inside it?

मैंने एक पैड उठाया. मैं देखना चाहता था कि ये था क्या, और इसके अन्दर क्या है?

The very first time, at the age of 29,

तो पहली बार, 29 साल की उमर में,

that day I am touching the sanitary pad, first ever.

मैंने एक सैनेटरी पैड को अपने हाथ में लिया.

I must know: How many of the guys here have touched a sanitary pad?

अब आप बताईए: यहाँ कितने आदमी हैं जिन्होंने सैनेटरी पैड हाथ में लिया है?

They are not going to touch that, because it's not your matter.

मुझे पता है, आप में से ऎसा यहाँ कोई नहीं, आखिर ये झमेला भी तो आपका नहीं!

Then I thought to myself, white substance, made of cotton --

फिर मैंने सोचा, हे भगवान,

oh my God, that guy is just using a penny value of raw material --

ये रूई से बनी कौड़ियों के दाम की सफेद चीज़ को

inside they are selling for pounds, dollars.

ये लोग सौ, दो सौ गुना ज़्यादा महँगा बेच रहे हैं!

Why not make a local sanitary pad for my new wife?

क्यों ना मैं अपनी नई नवेली बीवी के लिए खुद ही सैनेटरी पैड बनाऊँ?

That's how all this started, but after making a sanitary pad,

तो शुरुवात यहीं से हुई, मगर सैनेटरी पैड बनाने के बाद,

where can I check it?

मैं उसे परखने कहाँ ले जाता?

It's not like I can just check it in the lab.

आखिर मैं उसकी जाँच किसी लैबोरेटरी में नहीं करवा सकता था.

I need a woman volunteer. Where can I get one in India?

मुझे किसी महिला वोलन्टियर की ज़रुरत थी. ऎसी महिला इस पूरे भारत में कहाँ मिलती?

Even in Bangalore you won't get [one], in India.

ऎसा कोई बैंगलोर में मिलने से तो रहा.

So only problem: the only available victim is my wife.

तो समस्या का समाधान यही था: बली का एकलौता उपलब्द्ध बकरा, मेरी बीवी.

Then I made a sanitary pad and handed it to Shanti -- my wife's name is Shanti.

मैंने सैनेटरी पैड बनाकर शान्ती को दे दिया--मेरी पत्नी का नाम शान्ती है.

"Close your eyes. Whatever I give,

"अपनी आँखे बन्द करो. मैं तुम्हें जो देने जा रहा हूँ,

it will be not a diamond pendant

वो ना तो हीरों का हार है,

not a diamond ring, even a chocolate,

ना हीरे की अंगूठी, ना ही कोई चॉकलेट.

I will give you a surprise with a lot of tinsel paper rolled up with it.

मैं तुम्हें रंगीन क़ागज़ में लपेटकर एक सरप्राईज़ देने जा रहा हूँ.

Close your eyes."

अपनी आँखें बन्द करो."

Because I tried to make it intimate.

मैं उसे ये तोह्फा बड़े प्यार से देना चाहता था.

Because it's an arranged marriage, not a love marriage.

आखिर हमारी अरेन्ज्ड मैरेज थी, लव मैरेज नहीं.

So one day she said, openly, I'm not going to support this research.

फिर एकदिन उसने मुझे सीधे कहा, "मैं इसमें तुम्हारा साथ नहीं दूँगी."

Then other victims, they got into my sisters.

मुझे नए उपयोगकर्ता चाहिए थे, तो अब मैंने अपनी बहनों से मदद मांगी.

But even sisters, wives, they're not ready to support in the research.

पर ना बहनें, ना बीवी, इस काम में मदद के लिए कोई तैयार नहीं था.

That's why I am always jealous with the saints in India.

इसलिए मुझे हमेशा अपने देश के साधू-संतों से जलन होती है.

They are having a lot of women volunteers around them.

उनके आस-पास हमेशा महिला स्वेच्छासेवियों की टोली होती है.

Why I am not getting [any]?

मुझे एक भी महिला मदद करने को तैयार नहीं?

You know, without them even calling, they'll get a lot of women volunteers.

और देखिए, साधू-संतों के काम में महिलाएं बुलाने से पहले ही स्वेच्छा-सेवा के लिए जमा हो जाती हैं.

Then I used, tried to use the medical college girls.

फिर मैने मेडिकल कॉलेज की लड़कियों से मदद लेने की सोची.

They also refused. Finally, I decide,

use sanitary pad myself.

Now I am having a title like

I wore a sanitary pad. I filled animal blood in a football bottle,

तो मैने सैनेटरी पैद पहना. एक फुटबॉल बॉटल में जानवर का खून भर कर

I tied it up here, there is a tube going into my panties,

यहाँ बाँध दिया,.इससे निकलकर एक ट्युब मेरी चड्डी के अंदर जाती थी.

while I'm walking, while I'm cycling, I made a press,

चलते समय, साईकल चलाते समय, मैं उसको दबाता था,

doses of blood will go there.

जिससे ट्युब से ख़ून निकलता था.

That makes me bow down to any woman in front of me

इस अनुभव के बाद मैं किसी भी महिला के आगे

to give full respect. That five days I'll never forget --

ससम्मान सर झुकाना चाहूँगा. वो पाँच दिन मैं ज़िन्दगी भर नहीं भूल सकता--

the messy days, the lousy days, that wetness.

वो तकलीफ भरे दिन, वो बेचैनी और गीलापन!

My God, it's unbelievable.

हे भगवान, सोच पाना भी मुश्किल है!

But here the problem is, one company is making napkin

पर अब समस्या थी, एक कम्पनी रूई से

out of cotton. It is working well.

नैपकिन बना रही थी. उनका पैड सही काम कर रही थी.

But I am also trying to make sanitary pad with the good cotton. It's not working.

पर मैं भी तो अच्छे रूई से ही सैनेटरी पैड बना रहा था. मगर मेरे बनाए पैड काम नहीं कर रहे थे.

That makes me to want to refuse to continue this research and research and research.

बार बार नाकामी से परेशान होकर मैं ये सब छोड़ देना चाहता था.

You need first funds.

पहले आपको पास पैसे होने चाहिए.

Not only financial crises, but because of the sanitary pad research,

पर परेशानी सिर्फ पैसे के ही नहीं थी. चूँकि मेरा काम सैनेटरी नैपकिन जैसी चीज़ को लेकर था,

I come through all sorts of problems, including

मुझे हर तरह की परेशानी का सामना करना पड़ा,

a divorce notice from my wife.

यहाँ तक कि अपनी बीवी से तलाक़ का नोटिस भी.

Why is this? I used medical college girls.

ऎसा क्यों? क्योंकि मैंने मेडिकल कॉलेज की लड़कियों से मदद ली थी.

She suspects I am using as a trump card

बीवी को लगा मैं इस काम के बहाने

to run behind medical college girls.

मेडिकल कॉलेज की लड़कियों से चक्कर चला रहा था.

Finally, I came to know it is a special cellulose

आखिरकार मुझे पाईन की लकड़ी से बनने वाली

derived from a pinewood, but even after that,

विशेष सेलुलोज़ का पता चला, मगर उससे पैड बनाने के लिए

you need a multimillion-dollar plant like this

करोड़ों की लागत वाली ऎसे प्लान्ट की ज़रूरत थी.

to process that material. Again, a stop-up.

रास्ते में फिर रुकावट आ गई.

Then I spend another four years to create my own

मैंने और् चार साल बिताए अपने खुद की मशीन बनाने के लिए,

machine tools, a simple machine tool like this.

ऎसी एक साधारण, आसान सी मशीन बनाई मैने.

In this machine, any rural woman can apply the same

इस मशीन से कोई भी ग्रामीण महिला

raw materials that they are processing in the multinational plant,

बड़े मल्टीनैशनलों के प्लान्ट में लगने वाले कच्चे माल से ही

anyone can make a world-class napkin at your dining hall.

घर बैठे विश्व स्तर की नैपकिन बना सकती है.

That is my invention.

ये मेरी खोज है.

So after that, what I did,

इसके बाद, मैने क्या किया,

usually if anyone got a patent or an invention,

किसी के पास कोई पेटेन्ट या आविष्कार होता है,

immediately you want to make, convert into this.

तो तुरंत वो उससे ये - पैसे- बनाना चाहता है.

I never did this. I dropped it just like this,

मैने ऎसा नहीं किया. मैने उसे बिल्कुल ऎसे ही, छोड़ दिया,

because you do this, if anyone runs after money,

their life will not [have] any beauty. It is boredom.

तो जीवन में कोई सुन्दरता नहीं बचेगी. ज़िन्दगी बड़ी उबाऊ होगी.

A lot of people making a lot of money, billion,

बहुत से लोग ढेर सारा पैसा बनाते हैं, करोड़ों,

billions of dollars accumulating.

अरबों रूपए जमा करते हैं.

Why are they coming for, finally, for philanthropy?

इस सब के बाद वो आखिर में समाजसेवा करने आते हैं, क्यों?

Why the need for accumulating money, then doing philanthropy?

पहले पैसों का ढेर बनाकर फिर समाजसेवा करने आने का क्या मतलब है?

What if one decided to start philanthropy from the day one?

क्यों ना पहले दिन से ही समाज का सोचें?

That's why I am giving this machine

इसी लिए, मैं ये मशीन केवल ग्रामीण भारत में,

only in rural India, for rural women, because in India,

ग्रामीण महिलाओं को दे रहा हूँ, क्योंकि भारत में,

[you'll be] surprised, only two percent of women

आपको जानकर आश्चर्य होगा, केवल दो प्रतिशत महिलाएं

are using sanitary pads. The rest, they're using a rag cloth,

सैनेटरी नैपकिन इस्तेमाल करती हैं. बाकी सभी, फटे-पुराने, पोछे-नुमा कपड़े,

a leaf, husk, [saw] dust, everything except sanitary pads.

पत्ते, भूसा, लकड़ी का बुरादा - इसी सब से काम चलाती हैं- सैनेटरी नैपकिन नहीं.

It is the same in the 21st century. That's why I am going

इस 21वी सदी में भी ये हाल है. इसी वजह से मैने

to decide to give this machine only for poor women across India.

ये मशीन भारत भर की गरीब महिलाओं को देने की सोची है.

So far, 630 installations happened in 23 states

अब तक 23 राज्यों और 6 और देशों में

in six other countries.

630 मशीन लग चुके हैं.

Now I'm on my seventh year sustaining against

बड़े बड़े मल्टीनेशनल और विदेशी कम्पनियों के उत्पादों से जूझकर

multinational, transnational giants -- makes all MBA students a question mark.

जमकर टिके रहने का ये मेरा सातवाँ साल है - इस बात से सभी एम बी ए दंग हैं.

A school dropout from Coimbatore, how he is able to sustaining?

स्कूल की पढ़ाई भी पूरी ना कर पाने वाला कोईम्बटूर का एक साधारण आदमी, कैसे अब तक मार्केट में टिका है?

That makes me a visiting professor and guest lecturer in all IIMs.

इसी बात ने मुझे सभी आई आई एम में विज़िटिंग प्रोफेसर और गेस्ट लेक्चरर बना दिया.

So I decided I'm going to sell this new machine

तो मैने अब तय किया है कि इस नए मशीन को

only for Women Self Help Groups.

केवल महिला स्वंय सहायता समूह (एस एच जी) को हिइ बेचूँगा.

That is my idea.

यही मेरी सोच है.

AM: And previously, you need a multimillion investment

पहले आप को नैपकिन बनाने के लिए करोड़ों निवेश करना पड़ता था,

for machine and all. Now, any rural woman can.

मशीन और बाकी ताम-झाम में. अब, कोई भ्री ग्रामीण महिला आसानी से इसे बना सकती है.

They are performing puja.

I'm sustaining on seventh year.

मैं सात साल से अपने पैर जमाए खड़ा हूँ.

Already 600 installations. What is my mission?

अबतक 600 मशीनें लग चुकि हैं. क्या है मेरा मक़सद ?

I'm going to make India

मैं भारत को अपने जीते जी

[into] a 100-percent-sanitary-napkin-using country in my lifetime.

100%-सैनेटरी-नैपकिन-इस्तेमाल करने वाला देश बनाना चाहता हूँ.

In this way I'm going to provide not less than a million

इस काम से मैं कम से कम दस लाख ग्रामीणों

rural employment that I'm going to create.

को रोज़गार दिलाने जा रहा हूँ.

That's why I'm not running after this bloody money.

यही वजह है कि मैं पैसे के पीछे नहीं भाग रहा.

I'm doing something serious.

मैं एक महत्वपूर्ण काम कर रहा हूँ.

If you chase a girl, the girl won't like you.

अगर आप किसी लड़की का पीछा करें, वो आपको भाव नहीं देगी.

Do your job simply, the girl will chase you.

मगर अगर आप अपना काम ढंग से करें, लड़की आपके पीछे-पीछे आएगी.

Like that, I never chased Mahalakshmi.

बिल्कुल वैसे ही, मैने कभी महालक्ष्मी (पैसे) का पीछा नहीं किया.

Mahalakshmi is chasing me, I am keeping in the back pocket.

महालक्ष्मी ही मेरे पीछे आ रही हैं, और मैं उन्हें अपने पीछे के पॉकेट में रखता हूँ.

Not in front pocket. I'm a back pocket man.

across the globe. That's why I put all the details

on public domain like an open software.

Now 110 countries are accessing it. Okay?

So I classify the people into three:
