At the beginning of the 20th century,

the eastern American chestnut population, counting nearly four billion trees,

पूर्वी अमरीका की चेस्ट नट या शाहबलूत अखरोट की फसल के लगभग चार अरब पेड़ को

was completely decimated by a fungal infection.

फफूंदी के संक्रमण ने पूरी तरह से तबाह कर दिया था.

Fungi are the most destructive pathogens of plants,

फफूंदी पौधों की सबसे विनाशकारी रोगाणु हैं,

including crops of major economic importance.

Can you imagine that today,

crop losses associated with fungal infection

are estimated at billions of dollars per year, worldwide?

That represents enough food calories to feed half a billion people.

जितनी फसल से आधा अरब लोगों को खाने के लिए पर्याप्त भोजन मिल सकता है |

And this leads to severe repercussions,

including episodes of famine in developing countries,

large reduction of income for farmers and distributors,

high prices for consumers

and risk of exposure to mycotoxin, poison produced by fungi.

The problems that we face

समस्याएँ हमारे सामने ये है कि

is that the current method used to prevent and treat

रोकथाम और उपचार की वर्तमान पद्धति

those dreadful diseases,

जो इन भयानक रोगो

such as genetic control, exploiting natural sources of resistance,

जैसे आनुवंशिक नियंत्रण, प् रतिरोध के प्राकृतिक स्रोतों का शोषण

crop rotation or seed treatment, among others,

are still limited or ephemeral.

They have to be constantly renewed.

Therefore, we urgently need to develop more efficient strategies

and for this, research is required to identify biological mechanisms

One feature of fungi is that they cannot move

for fungi to locate, grow toward, reach

ताकि फफूंदी उन्हे ढूँढ सके, और उसकी तरफ बढ़ सके, पहुँच सके

and finally invade and colonize a plant.

और आख़िरकार उस पर हमला कर उसे अपने उपनिवेश बना सके

He knew that the identification of such signals

वह जानता था कि इस तरह के संकेतों की पहचान

would unlock a great knowledge that then serves to elaborate strategy

to block the interaction between the fungus and the plant.

However, the lack of an appropriate method at that moment
