The question of transformation in Africa

really is a question of leadership.

Africa can only be transformed by enlightened leaders.

And it is my contention that the manner in which

we educate our leaders is fundamental

to progress on this continent.

I want to tell you some stories that explain my view.

We all heard about the importance of stories yesterday.

कल हम सभी ने कहानियों के महत्व के बारे में चर्चा की है

An American friend of mine this year volunteered as a nurse in Ghana,

and in a period of three months she came to a conclusion

about the state of leadership in Africa

that had taken me over a decade to reach.

Twice she was involved in surgeries

दो बार वो ऐसी सर्जरीस में शामिल थी

where they lost power at the hospital.

जिसके दौरान अस्पताल में बिजली चली गई

The emergency generators did not start.

आपातकालीन जेनरेटर शुरू नहीं हुए

There was not a flashlight, not a lantern, not a candle --

न कोई रौशनी, न दीया, न लालटेन.

pitch black.

घोर अंधेरा.

The patient's cut open, twice.

रोगी का शरीर खुला हुआ -- दो बार.

The first time it was a C-section.

पहली बार एक सीज़ेरियन था.

Thankfully, baby was out -- mother and child survived.

शुक्र है, शिशु बहार आ गया-- जच्चा-बच्चा दोनों जीवित बच गए.

The second time was a procedure that involved local anesthesia.

दूसरी बार के उपचार में बेहोश करने की आवश्यकता थी

Anesthetic wears off. The patient feels pain.

रोगी ज़्यादा समय तक बेहोशी में न रहा, उसे दर्द महसूस हुआ

He's crying. He's screaming. He's praying.

वो रो रहा है, चिल्ला रहा है, प्रार्थना कर रहा है

Pitch black. Not a candle, not a flashlight.

घोर अंधेरा, न कोई दीया, न कोई रौशनी

And that hospital could have afforded flashlights.

जबकि वह अस्पताल टॉर्च खरीद सकता था

They could have afforded to purchase these things, but they didn't.

वह अस्पताल इन सब चीज़ों को खरीदने में सक्षम थे, मगर उन्होने ऐसा न किया

And it happened twice.

और ऐसा दो बार हुआ

Another time, she watched in horror as nurses watched a patient die

एक दूसरी बार, वे यह देख कर भयभीत हो गयी की नर्स को एक रोगी को मरते हुआ देख रही थी,

because they refused to give her oxygen that they had.

क्योंकि उन्होंने ऑक्सिजन देने से इनकार कर दिया, जोकि उनके पास था

And so three months later,

और फिर, तीन महीनों के बाद,

just before she returned to the United States,

उनके अमरीका लौटने के कुछ ही समय पहले,

nurses in Accra go on strike.

And her recommendation is

take this opportunity to fire everyone, start all over again.

Now what does this have to do with leadership?

इस सभी का नेतृत्व से क्या संबंध है?

You see, the folks at the ministry of health,

देखिए, स्वास्थ मंत्रालय का दोष,

the hospital administrators, the doctors, the nurses --

अस्पताल प्रशासन, डॉक्टर, नर्सों

they are among just five percent of their peers

यह सभी उन चुनिंदा पाँच प्रतिशत लोगों में हैं,

who get an education after secondary school.

जिन्हें माध्यमिक स्तर से ऊपर शिक्षा मिलती है

They are the elite. They are our leaders.

ये समाज के उत्कृष्ट भाग के सदस्य हैं, यही हमारे नेता हैं

Their decisions, their actions matter.

इन्के निर्णय, इन्के कार्य, माइने रखते हैं

And when they fail, a nation literally suffers.

और जब ये लोग असफल होते हैं, एक राष्ट्र पीड़ा से करहाता है

So when I speak of leadership,

तो जब मैं नेतृत्व की बात करता हूँ,

I'm not talking about just political leaders.

We've heard a lot about that.

I'm talking about the elite.

Those who've been trained,

whose job it is to be the guardians of their society.

The lawyers, the judges, the policemen, the doctors,

वकील, न्यायाधीश, पुलिस, डॉक्टर,

the engineers, the civil servants --

इंजिनियर, प्रशासनिक सेवक -

those are the leaders.

And we need to train them right.

और हमें इन्हे सही तरह से प्रशिक्षित करना है

Now, my first pointed and memorable experience with leadership in Ghana

घाना में नेतृत्व के साथ मेरा सबसे पहला यादगार अनुभव घटा,

occurred when I was 16 years old.

जब मैं 16 साल का था

We had just had a military coup,

हमारे यहाँ तभी ही सैन्य विद्रोह हुआ था

and soldiers were pervasive in our society.

और सैनिक समाज में हर तरफ फैले हुए थे

They were a pervasive presence.

उनकी उपस्थिति व्यापक थी

And one day I go to the airport to meet my father,

और एक दिन मैं अपने पिता से मिलने हवाई अड्डे गया

and as I walk up this grassy slope from the car park

और जैसे ही मैं कार पार्किंग से घास से ढके ढलान पर चलता हुआ

to the terminal building,

टर्मिनल भवन की ओर गया

I'm stopped by two soldiers wielding AK-47 assault weapons.

AK-47 हथियार बद्ध दो सैनिकों ने मुझे रोका

And they asked me to join a crowd of people

और उन्होने मुझे लोगों की भीढ़ में शामिल होने का आदेश दिया

that were running up and down this embankment.

जो की इस बाँध पर यहाँ-वहाँ भाग रहे थे

Why? Because the path I had taken was considered out of bounds.

क्यों? क्योंकी जो रास्ता पर मैं जा रहा था, उसमे प्रवेश निषिद्ध था

No sign to this effect.

और इस संबंध में कोई संकेत न था

Now, I was 16. I was very worried about

मैं 16 साल का था | मैं घबरा गया कि

what my peers at school might think

मेरे सहकर्मी मेरे बारे में क्या सोचेंगे

if they saw me running up and down this hill.

अगर वे मुझे ऐसे # पहाड़ी पर इधर-उधर भागते हुए देखेंगे

I was especially concerned of what the girls might think.

मुझे ख़ासकर यही चिंता थी की लड़कियाँ क्या सोचेंगी.

And so I started to argue with these men.

और ईससी कारण से मैने इन सैनिकों से बहस करनी शुरू कर दी

It was a little reckless, but you know, I was 16.

यह लापरवाही वाली बात थी, मगर जैसा मैने आपको बताया, मैं 16 साल का था

I got lucky.

मैं भाग्यशाली रहा

A Ghana Airways pilot falls into the same predicament.

घाना एरवेस का एक पाइलट इसी दुविधा में पड़ गया

Because of his uniform they speak to him differently,

उसकी वर्दी को देख, सैनिकों ने उससे ढंग से बात करनी शुरू कर दी

and they explain to him that they're just following orders.

सैनिकों ने समझाया की वे सिर्फ़ अपने आदेशों का पालन कर रहे थे

So he takes their radio, talks to their boss,

पाइलट ने सैनिकों का रेडियो लिया, उनके साहब से बात की,

and gets us all released.

और हम सभी को छुड़वा दिया

What lessons would you take from an experience like this?

इस अनुभव से हमे क्या सीख मिलती है?

Several, for me.

मुझे कई सीख मिलीं

Leadership matters. Those men are following

नेतृत्व महत्वपूर्ण है | वे सैनिक पालन कर रहे हैं

the orders of a superior officer.

अपने से उच्च अधिकारी के आदेश

I learned something about courage.

मैने साहस के बारे में कुछ सीखा

It was important not to look at those guns.

यह महत्वपूर्ण था की उन बंदूकों को न देखा जाए

And I also learned that it can be helpful to think about girls.

और मैने यह भी सीखा की लड़कियों के विषय में सोचना भी हमारे लिए सयाहक हो सकता है

(Laughter)

So a few years after this event, I leave Ghana on a scholarship

to go to Swarthmore College for my education.

It was a breath of fresh air.

You know, the faculty there didn't want us to memorize information

and repeat back to them as I was used to back in Ghana.

और उन्हे वापस दौहराएँ, जैसा की मैं घाना में किया करता था

They wanted us to think critically.

वे चाहते थे की हम गंभीरता से सोचें

They wanted us to be analytical.

वे चाहते थे की हम विश्लेषणात्मक बनें

They wanted us to be concerned about social issues.

वे चाहते थे की हम सामाजिक विषयों के बार सोचें

In my economics classes I got high marks

मुझे अर्थशास्त्र की कक्षाओं में अधिक अंक मिले

for my understanding of basic economics.

मेरी आधारभूत अर्थशास्त्र की समझ के लिए.

But I learned something more profound than that,

लेकिन मैने इससे भी अधिक और गहरा कुछ सीखा

which is that the leaders -- the managers of Ghana's economy --

were making breathtakingly bad decisions

that had brought our economy to the brink of collapse.

And so here was this lesson again -- leadership matters.

It matters a great deal.

But I didn't really fully understand what had happened to me at Swarthmore.

मगर मैं पूरी तरह यह नही समझ सका की मेरे साथ स्वारतमोरे में क्या हुआ

I had an inkling,

मुझे हल्का सा अंदेशा था

but I didn't fully realize it until I went out into the workplace

परंतु, यह मैं पूरी तरह नही एहसास कर सका जब तक में कार्यस्थल पर नहीं गया

and I went to work at Microsoft Corporation.

और मैं माइक्रोसॉफ्ट कॉर्पोरेशन में काम करने गया

And I was part of this team -- this thinking, learning team

और मैं इस टीम का हिस्सा था - एक सोचने वाली, सीखने वाली टीम

whose job it was to design and implement new software

जिसका कार्य था नए सॉफ्टवेर को डिज़ाइन और लागू करना

that created value in the world.

जिसका इस दुनिया में कोई मूल्य हो.

And it was brilliant to be part of this team.

इस टीम का हिस्सा होना शानदार था

It was brilliant.

शानदार था

And I realized just what had happened to me at Swarthmore,

और मुझे एहसास हुआ की मेरे साथ स्वारतमोरे में क्या हुआ था

this transformation --

यह बदलाव -

the ability to confront problems, complex problems,

मुश्किल, जटिल समस्याओं का सामना करने की क्षमता,

and to design solutions to those problems.

और इन समस्याओं का समाधान कि रूप-रेखा खीचने कि.

The ability to create is the most empowering thing

निर्माण करने की क्षमते सबसे सशक्त है,

that can happen to an individual.

जो एक व्यक्ति को हो सकती है

And I was part of that.

और मैं इसका हिस्सा था

Now, while I was at Microsoft, the annual revenues of that company

अब, जब मैं माइक्रोसॉफ्ट के लिए काम कर रहा था, कंपनी की सालाना कमाई

grew larger than the GDP of the Republic of Ghana.

रिपब्लिक ऑफ घाना के जीडीपी से अधिक हो गई थी.

And by the way, it's continued to.

और हाँ, यह जारी रहा

The gap has widened since I left.

मेरे छोड़ने के बाद यह फासला और भड़ गया

Now, I've already spoken about one of the reasons why this has occurred.

I mean, it's the people there who are so hardworking,

persistent, creative, empowered.

But there were also some external factors:

free markets, the rule of law, infrastructure.

These things were provided by institutions

run by the people that I call leaders.

जिन्हें चला रहे थे वे लोग जिन्हे मैं नेता कहता हूँ

And those leaders did not emerge spontaneously.

जबकि वे नेता खुद-ब-खुद नही उभरे

Somebody trained them to do the work that they do.

किसी ने उन्हें अपना कार्य करने में प्रशिक्षित किया

Now, while I was at Microsoft, this funny thing happened.

जब मैं माइक्रोसॉफ्ट में था, एक मज़ाकिया चीज़ हुई

I became a parent.

मैं पिता बन गया

And for the first time, Africa mattered more to me than ever before.

और पहली बार, अफ्रीका पहले से सबसे ज़्यादा माइने रखने लगा

Because I realized that the state of the African continent

क्योंकि मुझे यह एहसास हुआ की अफ़्रीकन महाद्वीप की स्तिथि

would matter to my children and their children.

मेरी बच्चों को और उनके बच्चों के लिए माइने रखेगी

That the state of the world -- the state of the world

की दुनिया की स्तिथि - दुनिया की स्तिथि

depends on what's happening to Africa,

अफ्रीका के हालत पर निर्भर करती है

as far as my kids would be concerned.

जहाँ तक मेरे बच्चों का सवाल है

And at this time, when I was going through

what I call my "pre-mid-life crisis,"

Africa was a mess.

Somalia had disintegrated into anarchy.

Rwanda was in the throes of this genocidal war.

And it seemed to me that that was the wrong direction,

और मुझे ऐसा लगा की वही ग़लत दिशा थी

and I needed to be back helping.

और मुझे वापस जाकर मदद करनी चाहिए

I couldn't just stay in Seattle and raise my kids

मैं सिर्फ़ सेऐटल में बैठा अपने बच्चों को बड़ा नही कर सकता

in an upper-middle class neighborhood and feel good about it.

एक उक्छ-मध्यम वर्गीय पड़ोस में बैठे और इस बात के सोचकर अच्छा महसूस करूँ

This was not the world that I'd want my children to grow up in.

यह वह दुनिया नही है जिसमे मैं अपने बच्चों को बड़ा करना चाहता हूँ

So I decided to get engaged, and the first thing that I did

तो मैने इसमे जुड़ने का निर्णय लिया, और सबसे पहले जो मैने किया

was to come back to Ghana and talk with a lot of people

वह था घाना वापस आकर बहुत लोगों से बात करना

and really try to understand what the real issues were.

और वास्तव में मुद्दों को संपूर्ण ढंग से समझना

And three things kept coming up for every problem:

और हर समस्या पर तीन चीज़ें उभरती रहीं:

corruption, weak institutions

भ्रष्टाचार, कमज़ोर संस्थाएँ

and the people who run them -- the leaders.

और वे लोग जो इन्हे चलाते हैं - नेता

Now, I was a little scared

because when you see those three problems,

they seem really hard to deal with.

And they might say, "Look, don't even try."

But, for me, I asked the question,

"Well, where are these leaders coming from?

What is it about Ghana that produces leaders

that are unethical or unable to solve problems?"

So I went to look at what was happening in our educational system.

And it was the same -- learning by rote --

और वही था - रट-रट कर सीखना

from primary school through graduate school.

प्राथमिक शिक्षा से लेकर कॉलेज तक

Very little emphasis on ethics,

नीतिशास्त्र पर बहुत कम ज़ोर

and the typical graduate

और एक साधारण, विशिष्ठ ग्रेजुएट

from a university in Ghana has a stronger sense

घाना के विश्वविद्यालय के पास अधिक भावना

of entitlement than a sense of responsibility.

पात्रता की है, न की ज़िम्मेदारी की

This is wrong.

यह ग़लत है

So I decided to engage this particular problem.

तो मैंने यह निर्णय लिया इस विशेष समस्या में जुड़ने का

Because it seems to me that every society, every society,

क्योंकि मुझे लगता है कि हर समाज, हर समाज

must be very intentional about how it trains its leaders.

अपने नेताओं को प्रशिक्षित करने में बहुत सोच-विचार करता है

And Ghana was not paying enough attention.

मगर घाना इसमे ज़्यादा ध्यान नही दे रहा था

And this is true across sub-Saharan Africa, actually.

और यह बात पुरे सब-सहारी अफ्रीका में सच है

So this is what I'm doing now.

तो मैं अभी यह कर रहा हूँ

I'm trying to bring the experience that I had at Swarthmore to Africa.

मैं अपने सवॉर्तमोर के अनुभव को अफ्रीका लाने की कोशिश कर रहा हूँ

I wish there was a liberal arts college in every African country.

काश अफ्रीका के हर देश में एक आदार कला (लिबरल आर्ट्स) का कॉलेज होता

I think it would make a huge difference.

मुझे लगता है कि बहुत फर्क पड़ता

And what Ashesi University is trying to do

और अशेसी विश्वविद्यालय की कोशिश है

is to train a new generation of ethical, entrepreneurial leaders.

की नैतिक और उग्यमि नेताओं कि एक नई पीढ़ी को परीक्षित किया जाए

We're trying to train leaders of exceptional integrity,

हम ईमानदार नेताओं को परीक्षित करने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं

who have the ability to confront the complex problems,

जिन्के पास कठिन समस्याओं से जूझने की क्षमता है,

ask the right questions, and come up with workable solutions.

सही सवाल पूछने की, और उचित समाधान ढूड़ने की

I'll admit that there are times when it seems like "Mission: Impossible,"

but we must believe that these kids are smart.

That if we involve them in their education,

if we have them discuss the real issues that they confront --

Now, a month into this project, we'd just started classes.

And a month into it, I come to the office,

and I have this email from one of our students.

और मुझे एक छात्र का ईमेल मिला

And it said, very simply, "I am thinking now."

और उसमे लिखा था, बहुत सरल ढंग में, "मैं अब सोच रहा हूँ"

And he signs off, "Thank you."

और अंत में लिखा था, "धन्यवाद"

It's such a simple statement.

इतना सरल वाक्य है

But I was moved almost to tears

मगर मुझे तो आँसू ही आ गए

because I understood what was happening to this young man.

क्योंकि मैं समझ गया की इस नौजवान के साथ क्या हो रहा था

And it is an awesome thing to be a part

और इसका हिस्सा होना एक गर्व है.

of empowering someone in this way.

किसी को इस तरह समर्थ बनाने में

I am thinking now.

मैं अब सोच रहा हूँ

This year we challenged our students

इस वर्ष, हमने अपने छात्रों को चुनौती दी

to craft an honor code themselves.

एक आचार संहिता के निर्माण करने की

There's a very vibrant debate going on on campus now

हमारे विश्वविध्यालय में एक अहम चर्चा चल रही है

over whether they should have an honor code,

अगर उनके लिए कोई आचार संहिता होनी चाहिए या नहीं

and if so, what it should look like.

और अगर होनी चाहिए, तो वह कैसी होगी

One of the students asked a question that just warmed my heart.

एक छात्र ने एक सवाल पूछा, जिससे मेरा दिल पिघल गया

Can we create a perfect society?

क्या हम एक परिपूर्ण समाज बना सकते हैं?

Her understanding that a student-crafted honor code

उसकी समझ थी कि छात्रों द्वारा बनाए गए नीयम

constitutes a reach towards perfection is incredible.

परिपूर्णता की ओर जाने का गठन करते हैं - यह अद्भुत बात है

Now, we cannot achieve perfection,

हम समाज में परिपूर्णता नहीं पा सकते

but if we reach for it, then we can achieve excellence.

मगर अगर हम उसे पाने की कोशिश करें, हम श्रेष्ठता ज़रूर पा सकते हैं

I don't know ultimately what they will do.

मैं नही जानता की अंत में वे लोग क्या करेंगे

I don't know whether they will decide to have this honor code.

मैं नही जानता कि वे यह नीयम योजना तय्यार करेंगे या नहीं

But the conversation they're having now --

मगर जो बातचीत वे आज कर रहे हैं -

about what their good society should look like,

कि एक अच्छा समाज कैसा होना चाहिए,

what their excellent society should look like,

उनका अपना श्रेष्ट समाज कैसा होना चाहिए -

is a really good thing.

बहुत अच्छी बात है

Am I out of time? OK.

क्या मेरा समय समाप्त हो गया? ठीक

Now, I just wanted to leave that slide up

मैं बस यह स्लाइड वहीं रखना चाहता हूँ

because it's important that we think about it.

I'm very excited about the fact

that every student at Ashesi University does community service before they graduate.

That for many of them, it has been a life-altering experience.

These young future leaders are beginning to understand

the real business of leadership,

the real privilege of leadership,

which is after all to serve humanity.

It's the first time in the history of Ghana

that a woman has been elected head of Student Government

कि किसी नारी को एक छात्र शासन के प्रधान के रूप में चुना गया हो

at any university.

It says a lot about her.

यह बात हमें उस नारी के बारे में बहुत बताती है

It says a lot about the culture that's forming on campus.

यह बात हमें कैम्पस पर पनपती संस्कृति के बारे में बहुत बताती है

It says a lot about her peers who elected her.

यह बात हमें उन मतदाताओं के बारे में बहुत बताती है जिन्होंने उसे निर्वाचित किया.

She won with 75 percent of the vote.

वह 75% के मतों से जीती

And it gives me a lot of hope.

और यह बात मुझे बहुत आशा देती है

It turns out that corporate West Africa

ऐसा समझ आता है कि मश्चिमी अफ्रीका

also appreciates what's happening with our students.

We've graduated two classes of students to date.

अभी तक हमारे विश्वविद्यालय से दो कक्षाएँ ग्रॅजुयेट हुई हैं

And every single one of them has been placed.

और हर एक छात्र को नौकरी मिली है

And we're getting great reports back

और हमें सूचनाएँ मिल रही हैं

from corporate Ghana, corporate West Africa,

घाना से, पश्चिमी अफ्रीका से

and the things that they're most impressed about is work ethic.

और वे सबसे ज्यादा प्रभावित उनकी कार्य शैली से हुए है.

You know, that passion for what they're doing.

उन्हें अपने काम से लगाव है.

The persistence, their ability to deal with ambiguity,

दृढ़ता, अस्पष्ता को झेलने की क्षमता,

their ability to tackle problems that they haven't seen before.

ऐसी समस्याओं की, जिसे उन्होने पहले देखा नहीं, उन्हे झेलने की क्षमता

This is good because

over the past five years, there have been times

when I've felt this is "Mission: Impossible."

And it's just wonderful to see these glimmers

of the promise of what can happen if we train our kids right.

I think that the current and future leaders of Africa

have an incredible opportunity

It's an incredible opportunity.

There aren't very many more opportunities like this in the world.

I believe that Africa has reached an inflection point

मुझे लगता है की अफ्रीका एक नए मोड़ पर आ गया है

with a march of democracy and free markets across the continent.

जहा लोकतंत्र और मुक्त व्यापार की व्यापकता हो गयी है.

We have reached a moment from which can emerge

वो क्षण आ गया है जिससे उभर सकता है

a great society within one generation.

एक पीढ़ी में से एक महान समाज.

It will depend on inspired leadership.

यह प्रेरित नेतृत्व पर निर्भर करेगा

And it is my contention that the manner in which we train our leaders

और मेरी यही सोच है कि जिस ढंग से हम अपने नेताओं को प्रशिक्षित करेंगे

will make all the difference.
