Now, for as long as I can remember, I've been told

the first script I ever got came from my dad.

But, sorry, Dad, as a kid I resented him for it,

are by creating experiences that force me to be vulnerable.

So if there's something I'm experiencing shame around in my life,

I practice diving straight into it,

that I finally found the strength to talk to them

about what I was going through.

But when I did, something amazing happened.

I realized that I wasn't alone,

And as soon as I found the strength and the courage to share my shame,

Now, I've learned over time

About a year ago, I posted this photo.

Now, afterwards, I was scrolling through some of the comments,

and I noticed that one of my female fans had tagged her boyfriend in the picture,

As if being gay makes you less of a man, right?

So I took a deep breath,

Growing up, we tend to challenge each other.

बड़े होते हुए, हम एक-दूसरे को चुनौति देते हैं,

We've got to be the toughest,

हमें सबसे मजबूत बनना है,

the strongest, the bravest men that we can be.

And for many of us, myself included, our identities are wrapped up

in whether or not at the end of the day we feel like we're man enough.

To reach out to another man when you need help?

To dive headfirst into your shame?

अपनी शर्मिंदगी को स्पष्ट मान सकें?

Are you strong enough to be sensitive,

क्या आप इतने ताकतवर हैं कि संवेदनशील बनें,

to cry whether you are hurting

दर्द हो या खुशी हो तो आँसू बहा सकें,

or you're happy,

even if it makes you look weak?

चाहे उससे आप कमज़ोर ही दिखें?

Are you confident enough

क्या आपमें इतना आत्मविश्वास है

to listen to the women in your life?

कि आपके जीवन में जो महिलाएँ हैं उनकी बात सुन सकें,

To hear their ideas and their solutions?

उनके विचार और उनके समाधान सुनें,

To hold their anguish

उनके दर्द सहें,

and actually believe them,

और असलियत में उनपर यकीन करें,

even if what they're saying is against you?

चाहे वे आपके खिलाफ ही कुछ कह रही हों?

And will you be man enough

और क्या आपमें इतना साहस आ सकता है

to stand up to other men when you hear "locker room talk,"

कि बाकी पुरुषों का विरोध कर पाएँ जब आप अश्लील बातें,

when you hear stories of sexual harassment?

या यौन उत्पीड़न की कहानियाँ सुनें?

When you hear your boys talking about grabbing ass or getting her drunk,

जब आप दोस्तों को उसके कूल्हे पकड़ने या उसे नशे में चूर करने की बात करते सुनें,

will you actually stand up and do something

क्या आप सच में विरोध करेंगे और कुछ ऐसा करेंगे

so that one day we don't have to live in a world

ताकि एक दिन हमें ऐसे संसार में ना रहना पड़े

where a woman has to risk everything

जहाँ एक औरत को सबकुछ दाँव पर लगाना पड़ता है

and come forward to say the words "me too?"

आगे बढ़कर "मैं भी" कहने के लिए?

This is serious stuff.

यह गंभीर मसला है।

I've had to take a real, honest look

मुझे सच में ध्यान से देखना होगा

at the ways that I've unconsciously been hurting the women in my life,

कि मैंने किस तरह से अनजाने में उम्र भर औरतों को कष्ट पहुँचाया है,

and it's ugly.

और यह अच्छा नहीं है।

My wife told me that I had been acting in a certain way that hurt her

मेरी बीवी ने मुझे बताया कि मेरा व्यवहार उसे तकलीफ़ दे रहा था

and not correcting it.

और मैं खुद को बदल नहीं रहा था।

Basically, sometimes when she would go to speak,

असल में, कभी-कभी जब वह कुछ कहने जाती

at home or in public,

I would just cut her off mid-sentence and finish her thought for her.

It's awful.

The worst part was that I was completely unaware when I was doing it.

It was unconscious.

अनजाने में कर रहा था।

So here I am doing my part,

तो मैं यहाँ अपना काम कर रहा हूँ,

trying to be a feminist,

एक नारीवादी बनने की कोशिश कर रहा हूँ,

amplifying the voices of women around the world,

संसार भर की नारियों की आवाज़ बुलंद कर रहा हूँ,

and yet at home,

और फिर भी घर पर,

I am using my louder voice to silence the woman I love the most.

मैं जिस औरत से सबसे अधिक प्यार करता हूँ उसी को चुप करवाने के लिए इतना चिल्लाता था।

So I had to ask myself a tough question:

तो मुझे खुद से एक मुश्किल सवाल पूछना था:

am I man enough

क्या मुझ में इतना साहस है

to just shut the hell up and listen?

Guys,

दोस्तों,

this is real.

यह वास्तविक है।

And I'm just scratching the surface here,

और मैं तो बस सतह की बात कर रहा हूँ,

because the deeper we go, the uglier it gets, I guarantee you.

क्योंकि हम जितना गहरा जाएँगे, उतना भद्दा होता जाएगा, यकीनन कह सकता हूँ।

I don't have time to get into porn and violence against women

मेरे पास औरतें के खिलाफ़ हिंसा और अश्लीलता या घरेलू कर्तवयों का विभाजन

or the split of domestic duties

या लैंगिक वेतन में असमानता की बात

or the gender pay gap.

करने का समय नहीं है।

But I believe that as men,

पर मेरा मानना है कि पुरुष होने के नाते,

it's time we start to see past our privilege

समय आ गया है कि हम अपने विशेषाधिकार से परे देखें

and recognize that we are not just part of the problem.

और पहचानें कि हम केवल समस्या का हिस्सा नहीं हैं।

Fellas, we are the problem.

यारों, समस्या हम ही तो हैं।

The glass ceiling exists because we put it there,

वह अवरोध है क्योंकि हमने उसे वहाँ बनाया है,

and if we want to be a part of the solution,

then words are no longer enough.

There's a quote that I love that I grew up with from the Bahá'í writings.

It says that "the world of humanity is possessed of two wings,

the male and the female.

पुरुष और स्री।

So long as these two wings are not equivalent in strength,

the bird will not fly."

So women,

तो महिलाओं,

on behalf of men all over the world

संसार भर के पुरुषों की ओर से,

who feel similar to me,

please forgive us

कृपया हमें क्षमा कर दें

for all the ways that we have not relied on your strength.

कि हम आपकी ताकत पर भरोसा नहीं कर सके।

And now I would like to ask you to formally help us,

because we cannot do this alone.

So back to my dad.

Growing up, yeah, like every boy, I had my fair share of issues,

बड़े होते हुए, हर लड़के की तरह, मैंने भी बहुत से मसलों का सामना किया,

but now I realize that it was even thanks to his sensitivity

पर अब मुझे एहसास होता है कि यह उनकी संवेदनशीलता

and emotional intelligence

और भावनात्मक ज्ञान की बदौलत है

that I am able to stand here right now talking to you in the first place.

कि मैं यहाँ खड़ा होकर आपसे यह बात कर पा रहा हूँ।

The resentment I had for my dad I now realize had nothing to do with him.

मुझे अपने पिताजी से जो गिला था,

मुझे अब एहसास है कि उसका उनसे कोई संबंध नहीं था।

It had everything to do with me and my longing to be accepted

वह सब मुझसे संबंधित था और मेरी उस स्वीकारे जाने की चाह से

and to play a role that was never meant for me.

और वह भूमिका निभाने की जो मेरे लिए बनी ही नहीं थी।

So while my dad may have not taught me how to use my hands,

तो हालांकि, मेरे पिताजी ने मुझे हाथों का प्रयोग करना नहीं सिखाया,

he did teach me how to use my heart,

उन्होंने मुझे दिल का इस्तेमाल करना सिखाया,

and to me that makes him more a man than anything.
