I want to tell you a story about Manson.

Manson was this 28-year-old interior designer,

a father to a loving daughter,

who found himself behind bars due to a broken-down judicial system.

There were two victims of this murder -- the victim who actually died in the murder

and Manson, who had been sentenced to prison

for an offense which he did not commit.

He was locked up in a cell, eight by seven,

And I remember yesterday,

as I walked into the room where I was,

I imagined the kind of cell that Manson would have been living in.

Because the toilet --

The row of the small rooms

that were there were slightly bigger than the eight-by-seven cell.

But being in that cell as he awaited the executioner --

Manson was known by a number.

He was just a statistic.

He did not know how long he would wait.

The wait could have been a minute,

The wait had no end.

And in the midst of the excruciating pain,

the mental torture,

the many unanswered questions that Manson faced,

he knew he was not going to play the victim.

He refused to play the role of the victim.

He was angry at the justice system that had put him behind bars.

But he knew the only way he could change that justice system

or help other people get justice

was not to play the victim.

ئەوەیە نەبێت بە قوربانی.

Change came to Manson when he decided to embrace forgiveness

گۆڕانکارییەک بەسەر مانسۆن هات کاتێک باوەشی بۆ لێخۆشبوون کردەوە

for those who had put him in prison.

بۆ ئەوانەی کە ئەویان خستبووە زیندان.

I speak that as a fact.

ئەو قسەیەی دەیکەم ڕاستییە.

Because I know who Manson is.

I am Manson.

من مانسۆنم.

My real name is Peter Manson Ouko.

And after my conviction,

after that awakening of forgiveness,

I had this move

to help change the system.

I already decided I was not going to be a victim anymore.

But how was I going to help change a system

that was bringing in younger inmates every day

هەموو ڕۆژێك بەندکراوی گەنجتریان دەهێنا

who deserve to be with their families?

کە شایستە بوون لەگەڵ خێزانەکانیان بن؟

So I started mobilizing my colleagues in prison, my fellow inmates,

بۆیە دەستم کرد بە کۆکردنەوەی زیندانییەکان، هاوڕێ بەندکراوەکانم،

to write letters and memoranda to the justice system,

بۆ نووسینی نامە و یاداشت بۆ سیستەمی دادوەری

to the Judicial Service Commission,

بۆ لیژنەی خزمەتگوزاری دادوەری،

the numerous task forces that had been set up

ژمارەیەکی زۆری چالاکوان کۆبوونەوە

in our country, Kenya,

لە وڵاتەکەمان، کینیا،

to help change the constitution.

تا یارمەتی گۆڕینی دەستوور بدەین.

And we decided to grasp at those --

بڕیارمان دا له‌وانه‌ تێبگه‌ین و هه‌وڵی دۆزینه‌وه‌ی

to clutch at those straws, if I may use that word --

ڕێگه‌چاره‌یه‌ك بده‌ین له‌كاتی دژواردا، ڕێگە بەخۆم دەدەم ئەم وشەیە بەکاربهێنم.

if only to make the justice system work,

تەنها بۆ باشترکردنی سیستەمی دادوەری

and work for all.

وکارکردن بۆ هەمووان.

Just about the same time,

هەر دەربارەی ئەو کاتە،

I met a young university graduate from the UK,

گەنجێکی دەرچووی زانکۆیەکی بەریتانیام دیت،

called Alexander McLean.

ناوی ئەلیکساندەر ماکلین بوو.

Alexander had come in with three or four of his colleagues from university

ئەلیکساندەر لەگەڵ سێ بۆ چوار هاوپۆلی زانکۆی هات

in their gap year,

لە کاتی پشوویاندا،

and they wanted to help assist,

دەیان ویست کارێك بکەن،

set up a library in Kamiti Maximum Prison,

which if you Google,

you will see is written as one of the 15 worst prisons in the world.

That was then.

But when Alexander came in,

he was a young 20-year-old boy.

And I was on death row at that time.

And we took him under our wing.

ئەومان لەخۆ گرت.

It was an honest trust issue.

ئەم بابەتە پەیوەست بوو بە متمانەوە.

He trusted us, even though we were on death row.

متمانەی پێمان بوو هەرچەندە ئێمە چاوەڕێی لە سێدارەدان بووین.

And through that trust,

لە ناو ئەم متمانەیەدا،

we saw him and his colleagues from the university

ئەو و هاوڕێکانیمان لە زانکۆ بینی کە سەرقاڵی

refurbish the library with the latest technology

دانانی کتێبخانەیەک بوون بە تەکنۆلۆژیای تازە

and set up the infirmary to very good standards

so that those of us falling sick in prison

بۆ ئەوانەی وەک ئێمە لە زیندان نەخۆش دەکەوتن

would not necessarily have to die in indignity.

تا لە بێزاری و توڕەییدا نەمرن.

Having met Alexander,

کاتێک ئەلیکساندەرم دیت،

I had a chance,

شانسێکم هەبوو،

and he gave me the opportunity and the support,

ئەو بواری پێبەخشیم و پاڵپشتم بوو،

to enroll for a university degree at the University of London.

بۆ خۆ تۆمارکردن لە زانکۆی لەندەن.

Just like Mandela studied from South Africa,

وەک ماندێلا كه‌ لە باشوری ئەفریقا خوێندی

I had a chance to study at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.

ئەو شانسەم هەبوو بۆ خوێندن لە پاراستنی زیندانی کامیتی.

And two years later,

دوو ساڵ دواتر،

I became the first graduate of the program

من بوومە یەکەم دەرچووی بەرنامەکە

from the University of London from within the prison system.

لە زانکۆی لەندەن لە ناو بەندینخانە.

Having graduated, what happened next --

خوێندنم تەواو کرد، دواتر

Having graduated,

خوێندنم تەواو کرد،

now I felt empowered.

ئێستا هەست بە بەهێزی دەکەم.

I was not going to play the helpless victim.

نامەوێت بکەومە ناو تەڵەی قوربانییەکی لاواز.

But I felt empowered not only to assist myself,

بەڵام هەستم بە بەهێزی کرد نەک تەنها بۆ یارمەتیدانی خۆم،

to prosecute my own case,

و بۆ جێبەجێ کردنی کەیسەکەی خۆم،

but also to assist the other inmates

بەڵکو بۆ یارمەتیدانی بەندکراوەکانی تریش

who are suffering the similar injustices that have just been spoken about here.

ئەو کەسانەی گیرۆدەی هەمان ستەم بوون. کە ئێستا ئاماژەم پێدا.

So I started writing legal briefs for them.

بۆیە دەستم بە نووسینی کورتە باسێکی یاسایی کرد بۆیان .

With my other colleagues in prison, we did as much as we could.

ئەوەندەی توانیمان لەگەڵ هاوەڵانی دیکەم لە زیندان.

That wasn't enough.

ئەوە بەس نەبوو.

and his team at the African Prisons Project

decided to support more inmates.

And as I'm speaking to you today,

there are 63 inmates and staff in the Kenya Prison Service

studying law at the University of London through distance learning.

These are changemakers who are being motivated

ئەمە هاندەری ئەو کەسانەیە کە گۆڕانکاری بەدی دەهێنن

not only to assist the most indolent in society,

نەک تەنها بۆ یارمەتیدانی خەڵکی رەشوڕووت

but also to help the inmates and others get access to justice.

بەڵکو بۆ یارمەتیدانی بەندکراوەکانیتر و خەڵکانیتریش تا لە مافی خۆیان بێبەش نەبن.

Down there in my prison cell, something kept stirring me.

لەژووری زیندانەکەم هاتمە دەرەوە، شتێک بەردەوام ناخمی دەهەژاند.

The words of Martin Luther King kept hitting me.

وشەکانی مارتن لوسەر كینگ کاری تێکردم.

And he was always telling me, "Pete, if you can't fly,

ئەو هەمیشە پێی دەگوتم، "پیتی، ئەگەر ناتوانی بفڕیت"

you can run.

دەتوانی ڕابکەیت.

And if you can't run,

و ئەگەر ناتوانی ڕابکەیت،

you can walk.

دەتوانی بڕۆیت،

But if you can't walk,

بەڵام گەر ناتوانی بڕۆیت،

then you can crawl.

خۆ دەتوانی گاگۆڵکێ بکەیت.

But whatever it is, whatever it takes,

هەر چۆنێك بێت و، هەر چییەک پێویست بکات

just keep on moving."

بەردەوام بە لە جوڵە."

And so I had this urge to keep moving.

و لەوەدا مەبەستم بەردەوام بوونە.

I still have this urge to keep moving in whatever I do.

ئێستاش لەم کارانەی کە دەیان کەم ئەم رژدبوونەم بەدیدەکەم.

Because I feel the only way we can change our society,

چونکە هەست دەکەم تاکە ڕێگەیە کە دەتوانێت کۆمەڵگەکەمان بگۆڕین،

the only way we can change the justice system --

لە ڕاستیدا تاکە ڕێگە بۆ گۆڕینی سیستمی دادوەری--

which has really improved in our country --

کە لە وڵاتەکەماندا خراپ گەشەی سەندووە--

is to help get the systems right.

یارمەتی باشترکردنی سیستەمەکەیە.

So, on 26th October last year, after 18 years in prison,

بۆیە، لە ۲۸ی ئۆکتۆبەری پار، دوای۱۸ ساڵ لە زیندان،

I walked out of prison on presidential pardon.

بە لێبوردنی سەرۆکایەتی لە زیندان ئازاد کرام.

ئێستا کارەکانم لە چوارچێوەی پاڵپشتی پڕۆژەی زیندانیانی ئەفریقا چڕکردووەتەوە

I'm now focused on helping APP -- the African Prisons Project --

achieve its mandate of training and setting up

بۆ بەدەست هێنانی یەکەم ڕێگەپێدان بۆ دروست کردنی مەشق پێکردن و

the first law school and legal college behind bars.

کردنەوەی یەکەم قوتابخانە و کۆلێژی یاسایی لە کونجی زیندان .

Where we are going to train --

ڕاهێنان بە ....

Where we are going to train inmates and staff

لەم شوێنە بە نیازین ڕاهێنان بە بەندکراوان و ستافی زیندان بکەین

not only to assist their fellow inmates,

نەک تەنها بۆ یارمەتی هاوڕێ بەندکراوەکانم،

but to assist the entire wider society of the poor

بەڵکو بۆ یارمەتیدانی چینی بەرفراوانی هەژاران.

who cannot access legal justice.

کە بێبەشن لە خزمەتگوزاری یاسایی.

So as I speak before you today,

بۆیە من ئەمڕۆ لە بەردەم ئێوە قسە دەکەم،

I stand here in the full knowledge that we can all reexamine ourselves,

دڵنیایی تەواوم هەیە کە دەتوانین خۆمان بگۆڕین،

we can all reexamine our situations,

دەتوانین بارودۆخمان دووبارە هەڵبسەنگێنین،

we can all reexamine our circumstances

دەتوانین هەلومەرجمان بگۆڕین

and not play the victim narrative.

تا چیرۆکی بە قوربانی بوونمان نەگێڕینەوە

The victim narrative will not take us anywhere.

چیرۆکی قوربانی بوونمان نامانگەیەنێتە هیچ شوێنێك.

I was behind bars, yeah.

لە پشت شیشی بەندینخانە بووم، بەڵێ.

But I never felt and I was not a prisoner.

بەڵام هەرگیز هەستم نەکرد زیندانی بم.

وانەیەکی بنچینەیی هەبوو کە دەبوایە فێری ببم

The basic thing I got to learn

was that if I thought,

ئەوە بوو ئەگەر بیر بکەمەوە،

and if you think, you can,

و ئەگەر ئێوە پێتان وابێت، دەتوانن،

you will.

ئەوا دەتوانن.

But if you sit thinking that you can't,

بەڵام ئەگەر ئێوە دانیشن بیر بکەنەوە کە ناتوانن،

you won't.

ئەوا ناتوانن.

It's as simple as that.

بەم شێوەیە سادەیە.

And so I'm encouraged by the peaceful revolutionaries

ئەم شۆڕشە ئاشتیخوازانەی کە

I've heard on this stage.

لە ئێوەم بیست هانیاندام.

The world needs you now, the world needs you today.

جیهان پێویستی بە ئێوەیە، و ئەمڕۆ جیهان پێویستی بە ئێوەیە.

And as I finish my talk,

لە کۆتاییدا،

I'd just like to ask each and every single one of you here,

یەک داوام لە گشت ئامادەبووان هەیە،

wonderful thinkers, changemakers, innovators,

بیرمەندە سەرسوڕهێنەرەکان، دروستکەرەکان و داهێنەرەکان،

the wonderful global citizens we have at TED,
