I grew up in Kuwait in the early ’90s,

لە سەرەتای(٩٠)ەکان لە کوەیت گەورە بوو،،

where I was raised by screens.

کە بە دیار شاشەکانەوە گەورە بوویمە.

The main windows to reality for me were television and the internet.

دەرچەی سەرەکی بۆ گەیشتن بە راستیەکان بۆ من تەلەفزیۆن و ئینتەرنێت بوو.

Not because of their accuracy,

لەبەر دروستیان نا،

but because there were storytelling machines.

بەڵکو لەبەر ئەوەی ئامێری چیڕۆک گێڕانەوە بوون.

These machines told stories that contradict one another,

ئەو ئامێرانە، ئەو چیڕۆکانەیان دەگێڕایەوە کە دژ یەک بوون،

but all somehow seem true.

هەرچۆن بیت، هەمووی راست دیار بوو.

The Arab region knew Kuwait to be one of the leading voices in media,

وڵاتە عەرەبیەکان، کوەیتیان بە یەکێک لە دەنگە پێشەنگەکان دانابوو،

specifically for comedy shows and theater.

بە تایبەتی بۆ نمایشە گاڵتە ئامێزەکان و شانۆ.

The rest of the world knew Kuwait to be a small country

بەشەکەی تری جیهان کوەیتیان بە وڵاتێکی بچوک دادەنا،

that was located between Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran during the Gulf War.

کە دەکەوتە نێوان سعودیە،‌‌‌‌عێراق و ئێران لە ماوەی شەری کەنداو.

Both stories are true.

هەردوو چیڕۆکەکە ڕاستن.

These screens that I drive my sense of reality from

ئەو شاشانەی کە من هەستی ڕاستیان لێوەردەگرم،

told me different and sometimes contradicting stories

چیڕۆکی جیاواز، هەندیک جار چیڕۆکی دژ یەکیان پیدەگوتم،

about who I am and where I come from.

دەربارەی ئەوەی من کێم و لە کوێوە هاتووم.

And that was the only way I understood anything around me:

تاکە ڕێگا بوو بۆ تێگەیشتن لە هەر شتیکی دەوروبەرم:

By placing it into different sets of stories.

بە دانانی لە شوێنە جیاوازەکانی ئەم چیڕۆکە.

When social media came around,

کاتێک تۆڕە کۆمەڵایەتیەکان هاتن،

it changed the way screens worked for me.

ئەوە شێوازی کارکردنی شاشەکانی بۆ من گۆڕی.

It wasn't only a window for observations anymore,

ئەوە تەنها پەنجەرەیەک نەبوو بۆ چاودێری کردن،

but an interactive one,

بەڵکو پەنجەرەیەکی کارلێکەر بوو.

one I could use to identify everything around me

١- دەتوانم هەموو شتێک لە دەوری خۆم ببناسێنم

in even more varied in multiple ways,

تەنانەت بە چەندین شیوەی جیاواز،

and to know myself better

بۆ خۆناسینم بە جۆرێکی باشتر

and actually participate in the storytelling process.

و لە بەشداریکردن لە پڕۆسەی چیڕۆک گێڕانەوە.

It started with these drawings,

لەگەڵ وێنەکان دەستی پيکرد،

mostly crosshatched on photographs that I took with my iPhone.

زۆربەی وێنەکانم لەڕێگەی موبایلەکەمەوە دەگرت.

With time, I started to animate them onto videos

لەگەڵ کات، دەستمکردە زیندوکردنەوەیان لەسەر ڤیدۆکان

that told stories from different perspectives

کە چیڕۆکەکانی دەگێرایەوە لە دیدگای جیاوازەوە

in a mocumentary series titled "Bird Watch."

لە زنجیرەیەکی دۆکیومێنتاری بە ناوی “سەیرکردنی باڵندەکان”

It consists of scripted interviews by imagined minority voices

ئەوە پێک دەهات لە چاوپێکەوتنە نوسراوەکان لە لایەن دەنگە کەمینەکانەوە

discussing a general issue or one of common interests.

تاوتوێ کردنی بابەتە گشتیەکان یان بەرژەوەندیە هاوبەشەکان.

The title of the series is meant to ponder the idea,

ناونیشانی زنجیرەکان مانای وایە کە بیر لە بیرۆکەکان دەکاتەوە،

What if birds were watching back?

چی ئەگەر باڵندەکان سەیری دواوە بکەن؟

What would they think of our obsession with speed and oil?

باوەڕیان چی دەبێت لەسەر ئاڵودەبوونمان لەگەڵ نەوت و خێرایی؟

Would they think we were dumb for standing under the rain?

ئایە وا بیردەکەنەوە کە ئێمە گێل بووین و لە ژێر باران وەستاوین؟

The second episode, for example, is an interview with a little girl

ئەلقەی دووەم، بۆنموونە چاوپێکەوتنە لەگەڵ کچێکی بچووک

that tries to explain her definition of health,

کە هەوڵ دەدات بۆ ناساندنی تەندروستی،

where she says she wants to be like her father,

کە کچەکە دەڵێت، ئەو دەیەوێت وەک باوکی بێت،

be strong, smoke and tell children not to.

بەهێز بێ، جگەرە بکێشێ و بە منداڵەکان بڵێ نابێ.

And also like her grandmother,

و هەروەها وەک داپیری،

cook good food, be loved by everyone

لێنانی خواردنی باش، خۆشەویست بێ لەلای هەمووان

and have diabetes.

هەروەها هەبوونی شەکرەش.

She also introduces us to the stomach animal.

هەروەها ئەو ئێمە بە گەدەی ئاژەڵ دەناسێنێت.

It's the head of an animal that's connected to our stomachs

ئەوە سەری ئاژەڵێکە کە پەیوەندی بە گەدەمانەوە هەیە

and its objective is to continue eating even after we're full.

ئامانجەکە بەردەوام بوونە لە خواردن تەنانەت دوای تێربوونیشمان.

You see, Kuwait has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity.

دەزانی، کە کوەیت یەکێکە لەو وڵاتانەی کە بەرزترین ڕێژەی قەڵەوی هەیە.

Presenting it in an amusing story

پێشکەشکردنی ئەوە لە چیڕۆکێکی خۆشدا

while pointing out that children are themselves a minor voice

کاتێک ئاماژە بەوە دەکات کە منداڵان خۆیان دەنگێکی لاوەکین

is a great way to really put the statistic into perspective.

ئەوە ڕێگەیەکی باشە بۆ ئەوەی ئامارەکان لەبەر چاو بگرین.

Another episode is an interview with a horse breeder

ئەڵقەیەکی تر، چاوپێکەوتنە لەگەڵ بەخێوکەری ئەسپ

who talks about the rules of making sure your well-bred horse

کە باس لە یاساکان دەکات بۆ دڵنیابون لە ئەسپە جوانەکەی تۆ

is taken care of.

ئەوە ئاگادار بوونە.

She, the horse, must not be seen by others,

ئەسپەکە، پێویست ناکا لەلایەن کەسانی ترەوە ببینرێ

must only mate with the same breed,

پێویستە لەگەڵ هەمان جۆر جووت بێت

must not be ridden by other men

پێویست نییە لەلایەن کەسێکی ترەوە لێبخوڕدرێ

and must be veiled.

پێویستە داپۆشراوبێ.

Making a story about a parameter of repression towards women funny,

دروستکردنی چیڕۆکێک دەربارەی پڕامیتەرێک لە سەرکوت کردن بەرامبەر بە ئافرەتی پێکەنیناوی

especially when it has animation or live action,

کاتێک کاری زیندوو و فلیم کارتۆنەکانی تێدایە

is a great way to walk clear through walls

ڕێگەیەکی باشە بۆ رۆیشتن بەناو بەربەستەکانی

of censorship, intolerance and political correctness.

چاودێری و قبول نەکردن و ڕاستکردنەوەی سیاسەت

I tried to implement the ideas behind these two episodes

هەوڵمدا بیرۆکەکان جێبەجێ بکەم لە پشت ئەو دوو ئەڵقەیەوە

before or during my first art solo in 2014,

لە پێش یاخود لە ماوەی یەکەم کاری هونەریم لە ساڵی (٢٠١٤)

but I still had to put it into a story to both be understood and accepted.

هێشتا ناچاربووم بیخەمە سەر جیڕۆکێک بۆئەوەی لە هەردووکیان تێبگەین و قبولیان بکەین

By speaking in someone else's voice,

بە قسە کردن بە دەنگی کەسێکی تر

I was experimenting with detachment from ideas

لەگەڵ جیاکردنەوە لەگەڵ بیرۆکەکان تاقیان دەکەمەوە

I grew up thinking where axioms.

من گەورە بووم لەگەڵ ڕاستیەکان.

We're in a strange place

ئێمە لە شوێنێکی سەیر داین

where our problem is the abundance of information,

کە کیشە گەورەکەمان زۆر بونی زانیارییە

where the majority of people have a platform to be heard,

کە زۆرینەی خەڵک سەکۆیەکیان هەیە تاکو گوێیان لێ ڕبگیردرێ

but representation is still an issue.

باڵام نوێنەرایەتی هێشتا کێشەیە

Representing a certain group, giving them justice.

نوێنەرایەتی کردنی گروپێکی دیاریکراو، هەق بەوان دەدا

All of these stories can naturally contradict,

هەموو ئەو چیڕۆکانە بە سروشتی دەتوانن ناکۆک بن

even if they differ slightly.

ئەگەر جیاوازیشیان هەبێت

We as humans are not merely the shape of body that we occupy

ئێمە وەک مرۆڤەکان شێوەی ئەو جەستەیە نین کە داگیرمان کردوە

or the specific description of behavior.

یاخود وەسف کردنێکی تایبەتی هەڵسوکەوت

We're a multiplicity of stories,

ئێمە فرە چیڕۆکین،

stories that often come in repetitive patterns

چیڕۆکەکان زۆر جار لە شێوازە دوبارەکانەوە دێن

that can be rewritten and reread.

کە دەتوانرێت بنوسرتنەوە و بخوندرێتەوە.

Having been raised by screens

لەبەر شاشەکان گەورە بووە

that told me different stories about who I am and where I come from

کە چیرۆکە جیاوازەکانی بۆ دەگێڕامەوە دەربارەی ئەوەی کێم و لە کوێوە هاتووم

confused me in the best way possible.

سەری لێشێواندم بە باشترین شێوە کە دەکرا

I saw that history is not as static as we thought,

من زانیم کە مێژوو بەو شێوەیە نیە کە ئێمە بیرمان لێدەکردەوە

that stories can be told, retold,

کە چیڕۆکەکان دەتوانن بوترێن و بوترێنەوە

read and reread.

بنوسرێن و بنوسرێنەوە

A change of context,

گۆڕانی دەق

change of perspective in hindsight

گۆڕینی تێڕوانین لە درک پێکردندا

can assign different values to everything and everyone around us.

دەتوانێت نرخی جیاواز بۆ هەموو شتێک، هەموو کەسێک دابنێت لە دەوروبەر

The way I see it,

ئەو جۆرەی کە من دەیبینم

that's where artists are most important.

کە هونەرمەندان زۆر گرینگن

To present metadocumentations of our history,

بۆ نیشاندانی بەڵگەنامە مێژووەکانمان

to give villains their origin story.

بۆ ئەوەی چیڕۆکی ئەسڵی خۆیانبدەنێ

Nothing and no one can be said to be good or bad

هیچ شتێک و هیچ کەسێک ناتوانێت بڵێت باشە یان خراپە

in isolation of the story around it.

لە گۆشە گیری چیڕۆکەکانی دەوروبەری

It's much like learning a new word.

زیاتر وەکو فێربونی وشەیەکی نوێیە

You have to use it in a sentence for it to make sense.

پێویستە تۆ ئەوە بەکار بێنی لە ڕستەدا بۆ ئەوەی هەستێک دروست بکەی

And then to challenge its meaning,

وە دواتر بۆ بەرەنگاری ماناکانی

you begin to use it in an infinite amount of stories.

تۆ دەست دەکەی بە بەکارهێنانی بڕێکی بێسنوری ئەو چیڕۆکانە
