I was born in Sierra Leone.

لقد ولدت في سيراليون.

I don't have any diamonds on me, by the way.

My grandfather had three wives.

When I was three, war broke out in Sierra Leone in 1991.

I remember literally going to bed one night, everything was good.

While we were there as refugees,

we didn't know what was going to become of us.

My mom applied for refugee status.

She's a wonderful, smart woman, that one,

and we were lucky.

Before we were meant to travel,

my mom came home one day, and said,

"We're going on a little holiday, a little trip."

She put us in a car,

وضعتنا في سيارة،

and we drove for hours and ended up in a bush

و قدنا لساعات و انتهى بنا الأمر في أحراش

in a remote area in Gambia.

في منطقة نائية في غامبيا.

In this bush, we found two huts.

في هذة الأحراش وجدنا كوخين.

An old lady came towards us.

أتت امرأة عجوز تجاهنا.

She was ethnic-looking, very old.

وكانت عرقية المظهر، طاعنة في السن.

She had a chat with my mom, and went back.

تبادلت أطراف الحديث مع أمي، ثم عادت أدراجها.

Then she came back and walked away from us into a second hut.

عادت مرة أخرى ثم توجهت ناحية الكوخ الأخر.

I'm standing there thinking,

و أنا أقف هناك أفكر،

"This is very confusing. I don't know what's going on."

"ان الأمر مربك، لا أدري ما الذي يجري"

The next thing I knew,

كان الشيئ الثاني الذي عرفته،

my mom took me into this hut.

أخذتني أمي الى داخل هذا الكوخ.

She took my clothes off,

ثم جردتني من ملابسي،

and then she pinned me down on the floor.

I struggled and tried to get her off me, but I couldn't.

Then the old lady came towards me with a rusty-looking knife,

أتت المرأة تجاهي حاملة سكينا صدئت

one of the sharp knives,

orange-looking, has never seen water or sunlight before.

I thought she was going to slaughter me,

أعتقدت أنها بصدد ذبحي،

but she didn't.

و لكنها لم تفعل.

She slowly slid down my body

انزلقت ببطأ على جسدي

and ended up where my vagina is.

She took hold of what I now know to be my clitoris,

she took that rusty knife, and started cutting away, inch by inch.

I screamed, I cried,

أنا جزعت و بكيت،

and asked my mom to get off me so this pain will stop,

و ترجيت أمي أن تنهض مني كي يتوقف هذا الألم،

و لكن كل ما فعلته أن قالت، "اهدئي"

but all she did was say, "Be quiet."

This old lady sawed away at my flesh for what felt like forever,

هذه المرأة عادت تقطع في لحمي مجددا في ما ظننت أنه للأبد.

and then when she was done,

و عندما انتهت،

she threw that piece of flesh across the floor

ألقت بقطعت اللحم تلك على الأرض

as if it was the most disgusting thing she's ever touched.

They both got off me, and left me there bleeding,

crying, and confused as to what just happened.

We never talked about this again.

Very soon, we found that we were coming to Australia,

and this is when you had the Sydney Olympics at the time,

and people said we were going to the end of the world,

there was nowhere else to go after Australia.

Then somebody came in,

slid their hand under and water came out,

and we thought, is this what we're in for?

Like, seriously.

We got to Adelaide, small place,

ذهبنا الى أديليد و هي مكان صغير،

where literally they dumped us in Adelaide, that's what I would say.

حيث ألقوا بنا هناك وهذا حرفيا كل ما أستطيع قوله.

They dumped us there.

لقد ألقوا بنا هناك.

We were very grateful.

كنا في غاية الامتنان.

We settled and we liked it.

حيث أستقرينا و أحببنا المكان.

We were like, "We're home, we're here."

كنا مثل، "نحن في الوطن، هنا".

Then somebody took us to Rundle Mall.

ثم أخذنا شخص ما الى رندل مول.

Adelaide has only one mall.

كانت أديليد تحوي مركز تسوق واحد فقط

It's this small place.

And we saw a lot of Asian people.

و كنا نرى الكثير من الأسيويين.

My mom said all of a sudden, panicking,

كانت أمي تقول فجأة و بذعر،

"You brought us to the wrong place. You must take us back to Australia."

"لقد جلبتنا الى المكان الخاطئ، لا بد أن تعيدنا الى استراليا"

Yeah. It had to be explained to her that there were a lot of Asians in Australia

and we were in the right place.

So fine, it's all good.

My mom then had this brilliant idea

that I should go to a girls school because they were less racist.

I don't know where she read that publication. (Laughter)

Never found evidence of it to this day.

Six hundred white kids, and I was the only black child there.

No, I was the only person with a bit of a color on me.

Let me say that. Chocolate color.

There were no Asians, no indigenous.

All we had was some tan girls,

girls who felt the need to be under the sun.

It wasn't the same as my chocolate, though. Not the same.

Settling in Australia was quite hard,

I spent months educating nurses and doctors

about what female genital mutilation was

and where it was practiced:

Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and now, Australia and London and America,

في أفريقيا و الشرق الأوسط و أسيا و الأن في أستراليا و لندن و أميركا

because, as we all know, we live in a multicultural society,

لأننا كما نعرف جميعا نعيش في مجتمع متعدد الثقافات

and people who come from those backgrounds come with their culture,

and sometimes they have cultural practices that we may not agree with,

but they continue to practice them.

One day, I was looking at the chart

of the different types of female genital mutilation,

FGM, I will just say FGM for short.

Type I is when they cut off the hood.

Type II is when they cut off the whole clitoris

and some of your labia majora, or your outer lips,

and Type III is when they cut off the whole clitoris

وأما النوع الثالث فهو عندما يقطعوا البظرين بالكامل

and then they sew you up

ثم يخيطونه

so you only have a little hole to pee and have your period.

My eyes went onto Type II.

Before all of this, I pretty much had amnesia.

I was in so much shock and traumatized by what had happened,

كنت مصدومة بحق نتيجة لما حدث،

I didn't remember any of it.

Yes, I was aware something bad happened to me,

but I had no recollection of what had happened.

I knew I had a scar down there,

but I thought everybody had a scar down there.

This had happened to everybody else.

But when I looked at Type II, it all came back to me.

I remembered what was done to me.

I remembered being in that hut

with that old lady and my mom holding me down.

Words cannot express the pain I felt,

الكلمات لا يمكن أن توصف ما شعرت به من ألم

the confusion that I felt,

و الارتباك الذي اعتراني،

because now I realized that what was done to me was a terrible thing

لأني الأن أدرك أن ما حدث لي كان أمرا فظيعا

that in this society was called barbaric,

it was called mutilation.

My mother had said it was called circumcision,

but here it was mutilation.

I was thinking, I'm mutilated? I'm a mutilated person.

And then the anger came.

A little one, but angry nevertheless.

I went home and said to my mom,

"You did something."

This is not the African thing to do, pointing at your mother,

but hey, I was ready for any consequences.

She's like, "What are you talking about, Khadija?"

She said, "Yes, I did.

I did it for your own good.

It was in your best interest.

Your grandmother did it to me, and I did it to you.

It's made you a woman."

I'm like, "How?"

She said, "You're empowered, Khadija.

Do you get itchy down there?"

I'm like, "No, why would I get itchy down there?"

She said, "Well, if you were not circumcised,

قالت، "حسنا، ان لم تكوني مختونة،

you would get itchy down there.

لكنت شعرت بالاثارة هناك.

Women who are not circumcised get itchy all the time.

النساء غير المختونات يتعرضن للاثارة طيلة الوقت

Then they sleep around with everybody.

ثم يضاجعن أي أحد.

You are not going to sleep around with anybody."

سوف لن تضاجعي أي أحد مثلهم."

And I thought,

ثم فكرت.

her definition of empowerment was very strange. (Laughter)

تعربفها لتمكين المرأة كان غريبا جدا. (ضحك)

That was the end of our first conversation.

كان هذا نهاية حديثنا الأول.

I went back to school.

عدت الى المدرسة.

These were the days when we had Dolly and Girlfriend magazines.

كان هذا في أيام مجلات دوللي و الصديقة.

There was always the sealed section. Anybody remember those sealed sections?

كان هناك دائما جزء مختوم. من يتذكر تلك الأجزاء؟

The naughty bits, you know?

القطع المشاغبة، أتعلمون؟

Oh yeah, I love those. (Laughter)

نعم، أحبها حقا.

Anyway, there was always an article about pleasure

على كل حال، دائما ما كان هناك مقال عن المتعة

and relationships and, of course, sex.

But it always assumed that you had a clitoris, though,

and I thought, this doesn't fit me.

I was like, these people and their damned clitoris.

What is a woman without a clitoris supposed to do with her life?

That's what I want to know.

كان ذاك ما اردت أن أعرف.

I want to do that too -- "Oh! Oh!" and all of that.

أردت ذلك أيضا أن أقول "اه! اه!"

Didn't happen.

و لكن للأسف.

So I came home once again and said to my mom,

ثم عدت مرة أخرى و قلت لأمي،

"Dolly and Girlfriend said I deserve pleasure,

"دوللي و الصديقة قالوا أني أستحق المتعة،

that I should be having orgasms,

و أن أجرب ذروة النشوة الجنسية،

and that white men should figure out how to find the clitoris."

و أن الرجال البيض يجب أن يتعلموا كيف يعثرون على البظر."

Apparently, white men have a problem finding the clitoris.

يبدو أن الرجال البيض يواجهون مشكلة في التعرف على البظرين.

(Laughter)

(ضحك)

Just saying, it wasn't me. It was Dolly that said that.

فقط قلت انها دوللي من قال ذلك و ليس أنا.

And I thought to myself, I had an inner joke in my head

و قلت لنفسي، ان عندي فكرة

that said, "I will marry a white man.

أن أقول، "سأتزوج رجلا أبيض."

He won't have that problem with me." (Laughter)

سوف لن يواجه تلك المشكلة معي." (ضحك)

So I said to my mom,

لذا قلت لأمي،

"Dolly and Girlfriend said I deserve pleasure, and do you know

دوللي و الصديقة فالوا اني أستحق المتعة، فهل تعلمين

what you have taken away from me, what you have denied me?

ما الذي جرديتيني منه؟

You have invaded me in the most sacred way.

لقد انتهكتني بالطريقة الأكثر قدسية

I want pleasure.

أريد أن أشعر بالمتعة.

I want to get horny, dammit, as well."

أريد أن أصبح شبقة أيضا، اللعنة"

And she said to me, "Who is Dolly and Girlfriend?

Are they your new friends, Khadija?"

I was like, "No, they're not. That's a magazine, mom, a magazine."

She didn't get it.

We came from two different worlds.

When she was growing up, not having a clitoris was the norm.

I was an African Australian girl.

I lived in a society that was very clitoris-centric.

And I didn't have one!

That pissed me off.

So once I went through this strange phase of anger

I remember booking an appointment with my therapist.

Yes, I'm an African who has a therapist. There you go.

And I said to her,

ثم قلت لها،

"I was 13. I was a child.

"كنت في الثالثة عشر. كنت طفلة.

I was settling in a new country,

كنت قد بدأت الاستقرار في بلد جديد.

I was dealing with racism and discrimination,

كنت أتعامل مع العنصرية والتمييز،

English is my third language, and then there it was."

اللغة الإنجليزية هي لغتي الثالثة، و هذا ما كانت عليه".

I said to her, "I feel like I'm not a woman

قلت لها، " أشعر و كأني لست بامرأة

because of what was done to me.

بسبب ما تعرضت له.

I feel incomplete.

أشعر بأني ناقصة.

Am I going to be asexual?"

هل سأصبح باردة جنسيا؟"

Because from what I knew about FGM,

بسبب أن ما عرفته عن الختان،

the whole aim of it was to control the sexuality of women.

أن الهدف الأساسي منه هو التحكم في مقدرة المرأة الجنسية.

It's so that we don't have any sexual desire.

بسبب ذلك فنحن لا نتمتع بأي رغبة جنسية.

And I said, "Am I asexual now?

ثم قلت، "هل أنا عاجزة جنسيا الأن؟"

Will I just live the rest of my life not feeling like having sex,

هل سأقضي ما بقي لي من عمر من غير الاحساس بمتعة الجنس،

not enjoying sex?"

فقدان متعة الجنس؟"

She couldn't answer my questions,

لم تستطع الاجابة على أسئلتي،

so they went unanswered.

لذلك بقوا من غير اجابة.

When I started having my period around the age of 14,

عندما بدأت معي الدورة الشهرية بعمر الرابعة عشرة،

I realized I didn't have normal periods because of FGM.

أدركت أنني لا أتمتع بدورة طبيعية بسبب الختان

My periods were heavy, they were long, and they were very painful.

حيث أنها كانت غزيرة و تدوم لفترات طويلة و مؤلمة جدا.

Then they told me I had fibroids.

ثم أخبروني أنني أعاني من أورام ليفية،

They're like these little balls sitting there.

فهي تشبه تلك الكرات الموضوعة هناك.

One was covering one of my ovaries.

أحدها كان يغطي أحد المبيضين.

And there came then the big news.

ثم أتت الأخبار السيئة.

"We don't think you can have children, Khadija."

"خديجة، لا نعتقد أنك ستتمكنين من الانجاب."

And once again, I was an angry black woman.

ثم مرة أخرى، كنت امرأة سوداء غاضبة.

I went home and I said to my mom,

عدت الى المنزل و قلت لأمي،

"Your act, your action, no matter what your may defense may be" --

"بسبب تصرفك، بسبب فعلك، لا يهم ما سيكون دفاعك"

because she thought she did it out love --

لأنها ظنت أنها فعلته بدافع الحب

"what you did out of love is harming me, and it's hurting me.

"ما فعلتيه بدافع الحب قد أضرني و يؤذيني.

What do you have to say for that?"

ماذا عساك تقولين حيال ذلك؟"

She said, "I did what I had to do as a mother."

قالت، "فعلت ما كان يتوجب علي كأم."

بالمناسبة، ما زلت أنتظر اعتذارا.

I'm still waiting for an apology, by the way.

Then I got married.

بعيد ذلك تزوجت.

And once again --

ثم مرة أخرى

FGM is like the gift that keeps giving.

ختان الإناث هو مثل الهدية التي تحافظ على العطاء.

I was told I was pregnant.

I am the lucky girl.

أنا الفتاة المحظوظة.

There are so many women out there who have gone through FGM

هناك الكثير من النسوة اللاتي مررن بتجربة الختان

who have infertility.

أصيبوا بالعقم.

I know a nine-year-old girl who has incontinence, constant infections, pain.

أعرف فتاة في التاسعة تعاني من سلس البول و التهابات مستمرة وألم.

It's that gift. It doesn't stop giving.

انها تلك الهدية التي تعطي بسخاء.

It affects every area of your life,

فهي تأثر على كل جوانب حياتك،

and this happened to me because I was born a girl

و هذا حدث لي لأني ولدت كفتاة

in the wrong place.

في المكان الخاطئ.

That's why it happened to me.

هذا هو السبب في ما حدث لي.

I channel all that anger, all that pain, into advocacy

و جهت كل ذلك الغضب و الألم الى دعوة

because I needed my pain to be worth something.

لأني احتجت لألمي كي يعني لي شيئا.

So I'm the director of an organization called No FGM Australia.

لذلك، أنا المديرة لمنظمة تدعى لا للختان في أستراليا.

You heard me right.

Why No FGM Australia?

لماذا لا للختان في أستراليا؟

FGM is in Australia.

أصبح الختان موجودا في أستراليا.

Two days ago, I had to call Child Protective Services,

قبل يومين توجب علي الاتصال بخدمة حماية الطفل

because somewhere in Australia,

بسبب أنه في مكان ما في أستراليا،

there's a four-year old

يوجد طفلة في الرابعة

there's a four-year-old whose mom is planning on performing FGM on her.

توجد طفلة في الرابعة تخطط أمها لختانها.

تلك الطفلة في كندي، سأركز على ذلك: أربعة سنين فقط.

That child is in kindy. I'll let that sink in: four years old.

A couple of months ago, I met a lady who is married to a Malaysian man.

قبل بضعة أشهر مضت، قابلت سيدة متزوجة من رجل ماليزي.

Her husband came home one day and said he was going to take their daughters

أتى زوجها ذات يوم و قال أنه سيؤخذ بنتيه

back to Malaysia to cut off their clitoris.

الى ماليزيا كي يتم ختانهما

And she said, "Why?" He said they were dirty.

قالت له، "لماذا؟" فقال لها أنهما قذرين.

ثم قالت له، "حسنا، أنت تزوجتني."

And she said, "Well, you married me."

He said, "Oh, this is my cultural belief."

فقال، "نعم، هذا هو اعتقادي الثقافي."

They then went into a whole discussion where she said to him,

ثم خاضوا نقاشا مطولا انتهى بأن قالت له،

"Over my dead body will you do that to my daughters."

"على جثتي ان تركتك تفعل ذلك لبناتي."

But imagine if this woman wasn't aware of what FGM was,

و لكن تخيلوا ان لم تكن هذه المرأة واعية بمخاطر الختان

if they never had that conversation?

ان لم يخوضوا ذلك النقاش؟

Her children would have been flown over to Malaysia

كان سيتم أخذ أطفالها الى ماليزيا

and they would have come back changed for the rest of their lives.

و سيعودون مختلفين لبقية حياتهم.

Do you know the millions of dollars

هل تعون ملايين الدولارات

it would take us to deal with an issue like that?

التي سنحتاجها للتعامل مع أثار الختان؟

[Three children per day] in Australia

بمعدل ثلاثة أطفال في اليوم في أستراليا

are at risk of having FGM performed on them.

معرضون لخطر الختان.

This is an Australian problem, people.

أيها الناس، هذه مشكلة لها علاقة بأستراليا

It's not an African problem. It's not a Middle Eastern problem.

ليس أفريقيا أو الشرق الأوسط

It's not white, it's not black, it has no color, it's everybody's problem.

لاعلاقة لها باللون الأبيض أو الأسود، بل هي مشكلة الجميع

FGM is child abuse.

الختان هو انتهاك للطفولة.

It's violence against women.

هو عنف ضد المرأة.

It's saying that women don't have a right to sexual pleasure.

هو بمثابة القول أن المرأة لا حق لها بالمتعة الجنسية

It says we don't have a right to our bodies.

هو مثل القول بأننا ليس لدينا الحق في أجسامنا.

Well, I say no to that, and you know what? Bullshit.

أنا أقول لا لذلك، أتعرفون ماذا؟ انه هراء

That's what I have to say to that.

هذا كل ما أستطيع أن أقول.

I am proud to say that I'm doing my part in ending FGM.

أن فخورة بالقول أنني أؤدي دوري لمحاربة الختان.

What are you going to do?

ماذا ستفعلون أنتم؟

There may be a child in your classroom who is at risk of FGM.

قد يكون هناك طفل في صفكم الدراسي معرض لخطر الختان.

There may be a patient who comes to your hospital

أو مريض أتى لمستشفاكم

who is at risk of FGM.

معرض لنفس الخطر.

But this is the reality,

و لكن هذا هو الواقع.

that even in our beloved Australia,

حتى هنا في أستراليا الحبيبة،

the most wonderful place in the world,

أروع مكان في العالم،

children are being abused because of a culture.

الأطفال ينتهكون بسبب ثقافة

Culture should not be a defense for child abuse.

لا يمكن أن تكون الثقافة ذريعة لانتهاك الطفولة،

I want ever single one of you to see FGM as an issue for you.

أريدكم جميعا أن تنظروا الى الختان كقضية تخصكم

Make it personal.

أجعلوه أمرا شخصيا.

It could be your daughter, your sister, your cousin.

قد تكون بنتكم أو أختكم أو قريبتكم

I can't fight FGM alone.

لا أستطيع محاربة الختان وحدي.

I could try, but I can't.

قد أحاول و لكني لن أستطيع.

لذلك فان مناشدتي لكم أن تنضموا لي.

So my appeal to you is, please join me.

The aim of that is to get support for FGM victims in Australia

الغرض من ذلك هو ايجاد الدعم لضحايا الختان في أستراليا

and to protect little girls growing up here

و لحماية الفتيات اليفع هنا

to not have this evil done to them,

و لمنع هذا الشر أن يصيبهن

because every child has a right to pleasure.

لأن كل طفل له الحق بالمتعة.

Every child has a right to their bodies being left intact,

كل طفل له الحق أن يترك جسده سليما،

and dammit, ever child has a right to a clitoris.

اللعنة! كل طفل له الحق أن يمتلك بظرين.

So please join me in ending this act.
