I was born in Sierra Leone.

My grandfather had three wives.

Don't ask me why a man needs more than one wife.

He was looking for a heart attack, that's what I say.

Oh yeah, he was.

When I was three, war broke out in Sierra Leone in 1991.

私が３歳の時 1991年に シエラレオネで戦争が始まりました

I remember literally going to bed one night, everything was good.

ある晩 何事もなく ベッドへ行ったのを覚えています

The next day, I woke up,

あくる日 目が覚めると

bombs were dropping everywhere,

爆弾があちこちに落とされて

and people were trying to kill me and my family.

We escaped the war and ended up in Gambia, in West Africa.

Ebola is there as well. Stay away from it.

While we were there as refugees,

we didn't know what was going to become of us.

My mom applied for refugee status.

She's a wonderful, smart woman, that one,

and we were lucky.

Australia said, we will take you in.

Before we were meant to travel,

my mom came home one day, and said,

"We're going on a little holiday, a little trip."

She put us in a car,

and we drove for hours and ended up in a bush

in a remote area in Gambia.

In this bush, we found two huts.

An old lady came towards us.

She was ethnic-looking, very old.

She had a chat with my mom, and went back.

Then she came back and walked away from us into a second hut.

I'm standing there thinking,

"This is very confusing. I don't know what's going on."

The next thing I knew,

次に覚えているのは

my mom took me into this hut.

She took my clothes off,

and then she pinned me down on the floor.

I struggled and tried to get her off me, but I couldn't.

Then the old lady came towards me with a rusty-looking knife,

one of the sharp knives,

orange-looking, has never seen water or sunlight before.

I thought she was going to slaughter me,

but she didn't.

She slowly slid down my body

and ended up where my vagina is.

She took hold of what I now know to be my clitoris,

she took that rusty knife, and started cutting away, inch by inch.

I screamed, I cried,

and asked my mom to get off me so this pain will stop,

but all she did was say, "Be quiet."

This old lady sawed away at my flesh for what felt like forever,

永遠のように長い時間をかけて 私の肉体を切り取り終えると

and then when she was done,

she threw that piece of flesh across the floor

as if it was the most disgusting thing she's ever touched.

They both got off me, and left me there bleeding,

crying, and confused as to what just happened.

We never talked about this again.

Very soon, we found that we were coming to Australia,

and this is when you had the Sydney Olympics at the time,

and people said we were going to the end of the world,

there was nowhere else to go after Australia.

Yeah, that comforted us a bit.

It took us three days to get here.

We went to Senegal, then France, and then Singapore.

We went to the bathroom to wash our hands.

We spent 15 minutes opening the tap like this.

Then somebody came in,

and we thought, is this what we're in for?

Like, seriously.

We got to Adelaide, small place,

where literally they dumped us in Adelaide, that's what I would say.

They dumped us there.

We were very grateful.

We settled and we liked it.

そこに落ち着き 街も気に入りました

We were like, "We're home, we're here."

「ここが我が家だ 私たちの居場所なのだ」と思いました

Then somebody took us to Rundle Mall.

それからランドル・モールに 連れて行ってくれた人がいました

Adelaide has only one mall.

アデレードにはモールが １つしかありません

It's this small place.

小さいところです

And we saw a lot of Asian people.

アジア系の人がたくさんいました

My mom said all of a sudden, panicking,

母はパニックに陥り 急に こう言いだしました

"You brought us to the wrong place. You must take us back to Australia."

「間違った場所に連れてきたのね オーストラリアに連れて帰ってちょうだい」

Yeah. It had to be explained to her that there were a lot of Asians in Australia

母には オーストラリアにはたくさん アジア系の人がいて

and we were in the right place.

正しい場所にいるのだと 説明する必要がありました

So fine, it's all good.

すべて順調でした

My mom then had this brilliant idea

それから母は素晴らしいことを 思いついて

that I should go to a girls school because they were less racist.

あまり人種差別的でない女子校に 私を入れることにしました

I don't know where she read that publication. (Laughter)

Never found evidence of it to this day.

Six hundred white kids, and I was the only black child there.

No, I was the only person with a bit of a color on me.

Let me say that. Chocolate color.

There were no Asians, no indigenous.

All we had was some tan girls,

girls who felt the need to be under the sun.

It wasn't the same as my chocolate, though. Not the same.

Settling in Australia was quite hard,

but it became harder when I started volunteering for an organization

called Women's Health Statewide,

and I joined their female genital mutilation program

without any awareness of what this program was actually about,

or that it related to me in any way.

知らないままに参加しました

I spent months educating nurses and doctors

何か月も看護師や医者の方々に

about what female genital mutilation was

and where it was practiced:

どこで行われているかを 説明しました

Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and now, Australia and London and America,

アフリカや中東 アジア 今では オーストラリアやロンドン アメリカもです

because, as we all know, we live in a multicultural society,

なぜなら 今私たちは 多文化社会に生きており

and people who come from those backgrounds come with their culture,

and sometimes they have cultural practices that we may not agree with,

but they continue to practice them.

One day, I was looking at the chart

of the different types of female genital mutilation,

FGM, I will just say FGM for short.

Type I is when they cut off the hood.

Type II is when they cut off the whole clitoris

and some of your labia majora, or your outer lips,

and Type III is when they cut off the whole clitoris

and then they sew you up

so you only have a little hole to pee and have your period.

My eyes went onto Type II.

Before all of this, I pretty much had amnesia.

I was in so much shock and traumatized by what had happened,

I didn't remember any of it.

Yes, I was aware something bad happened to me,

but I had no recollection of what had happened.

I knew I had a scar down there,

This had happened to everybody else.

But when I looked at Type II, it all came back to me.

I remembered what was done to me.

I remembered being in that hut

with that old lady and my mom holding me down.

年老いた女性と母に 押さえつけられたことを思い出しました

Words cannot express the pain I felt,

感じた痛みも混乱も 言葉では表し切れません

the confusion that I felt,

because now I realized that what was done to me was a terrible thing

that in this society was called barbaric,

it was called mutilation.

My mother had said it was called circumcision,

but here it was mutilation.

I was thinking, I'm mutilated? I'm a mutilated person.

「私は切除された人間なの？」 と私は思いました

Oh my God.

何てことでしょう

And then the anger came.

それから怒りが訪れました

I was a black angry woman. (Laughter)

私は怒れる黒人女性になったのです (笑)

Oh yeah.

そうですとも

A little one, but angry nevertheless.

小さいけれど 怒っていることに変わりはありません

I went home and said to my mom,

家に帰って 母に

"You did something."

「何てことしたの」と言いました

This is not the African thing to do, pointing at your mother,

母親を指さすのは アフリカ的なことではありませんが

but hey, I was ready for any consequences.

私はそんなことは構いませんでした

"You did something to me."

「私に何てことしてくれたの」

She's like, "What are you talking about, Khadija?"

母は「何を言ってるの カディジャ？」 という感じでした

She's used to me mouthing off.

母は私が口答えするのに 慣れているのです

I'm like, "Those years ago, You circumcised me.

私は「何年も前に 私を割礼したでしょう

You cut away something that belonged to me."

私のものを切り取ったのよ」 と言いました

She said, "Yes, I did.

母は「ええ そうよ

I did it for your own good.

あなたのためにやったことなのよ

It was in your best interest.

あなたのためには １番いいことなのよ

Your grandmother did it to me, and I did it to you.

あなたのおばあちゃんは私に 私はあなたにしてあげたの

It's made you a woman."

１人前の女性になったのよ」

I'm like, "How?"

「どういうこと？」と私

She said, "You're empowered, Khadija.

母は「カディジャ あなたは自立したのよ

Do you get itchy down there?"

あそこがかゆくなることがある？」 と言いました

I'm like, "No, why would I get itchy down there?"

私が「いいえ どうして かゆくなったりするするわけ？」と言うと

She said, "Well, if you were not circumcised,

母は「もし割礼していなかったら

you would get itchy down there.

かゆくなるのよ

Women who are not circumcised get itchy all the time.

割礼しない女性は しょっちゅうかゆくなるの

Then they sleep around with everybody.

そうすると誰とでも寝るようになるのよ

You are not going to sleep around with anybody."

あなたは誰とでも 寝るようじゃいけないわ」

And I thought,

私が思ったのは

her definition of empowerment was very strange. (Laughter)

母の「自立」の定義が ずいぶん変だなということです (笑)

That was the end of our first conversation.

最初の会話はそれで終わりました

I went back to school.

私は学校に戻りました

These were the days when we had Dolly and Girlfriend magazines.

その頃は『ドリー』とか 『ガールフレンド』といった雑誌があり

There was always the sealed section. Anybody remember those sealed sections?

必ず袋とじがありました 袋とじを覚えている人はいますか？

The naughty bits, you know?

ちょっといけないことが書いてあるのです

Oh yeah, I love those. (Laughter)

ええ 大好きでした (笑)

Anyway, there was always an article about pleasure

とにかく いつも性の悦びや

and relationships and, of course, sex.

恋愛や もちろんセックスについても 書いてある記事がありました

But it always assumed that you had a clitoris, though,

クリトリスがある前提で書いてあるので

and I thought, this doesn't fit me.

私には当てはまりません

This doesn't talk about people like me.

私のような女の子のことは 書いてないのです

I don't have a clitoris.

私にはクリトリスがありません

I watched TV and those women would moan like, "Oh! Oh!"

テレビを見ていて 「あぁ！あぁ！」と喘ぐ女性を見ると

I was like, these people and their damned clitoris.

こいつらもクリトリスも くそくらえと思っていました

(Laughter)

(笑)

What is a woman without a clitoris supposed to do with her life?

クリトリスのない女性は どうやって生きて行けばいいのでしょう？

That's what I want to know.

それが知りたかったのです

I want to do that too -- "Oh! Oh!" and all of that.

私も「あぁ！あぁ！」と やってみたいですけど

Didn't happen.

それは起こりませんでした

So I came home once again and said to my mom,

そこで家に帰ると また母に言いました

"Dolly and Girlfriend said I deserve pleasure,

「『ドリー』も『ガールフレンド』も私には 性の悦びを感じる権利があって

that I should be having orgasms,

オーガズムを感じるべきで

and that white men should figure out how to find the clitoris."

白人男性はクリトリスの 見つけ方を知るべきだって言ってるわ」

Apparently, white men have a problem finding the clitoris.

どうも白人男性はクリトリスが 見つけられないみたいですね

(Laughter)

(笑)

Just saying, it wasn't me. It was Dolly that said that.

私じゃなくて 『ドリー』が言ったんですよ

And I thought to myself, I had an inner joke in my head

私は心の中で ジョークを考え付きました

that said, "I will marry a white man.

「私は白人男性と結婚するわ

He won't have that problem with me." (Laughter)

そうすれば彼は困らなくて済むもの」 (笑)

So I said to my mom,

私は母に向かって言いました

"Dolly and Girlfriend said I deserve pleasure, and do you know

「『ドリー』も『ガールフレンド』も 私も悦びを感じていいと言ってるけど

what you have taken away from me, what you have denied me?

お母さんは私から何を奪ったか わかってるの？

You have invaded me in the most sacred way.

私の１番神聖な部分を冒したのよ

I want pleasure.

I want to get horny, dammit, as well."

私だって興奮したりしたいのよ」

And she said to me, "Who is Dolly and Girlfriend?

すると母は 「ドリーとかガールフレンドって誰なの？

Are they your new friends, Khadija?"

カディジャ 新しいお友達なの？」 と言いました

I was like, "No, they're not. That's a magazine, mom, a magazine."

「違うわよ 雑誌よ お母さん 雑誌なの」と言いました

She didn't get it.

母は理解しませんでした

We came from two different worlds.

私たちは全く異なる ２つの世界で育ったのです

When she was growing up, not having a clitoris was the norm.

母が育った頃は クリトリスがないのが当たり前でした

It was celebrated.

I was an African Australian girl.

I lived in a society that was very clitoris-centric.

It was all about the damn clitoris!

And I didn't have one!

That pissed me off.

私は頭に来ました

So once I went through this strange phase of anger

and pain and confusion,

I remember booking an appointment with my therapist.

Yes, I'm an African who has a therapist. There you go.

And I said to her,

"I was 13. I was a child.

I was settling in a new country,

I was dealing with racism and discrimination,

English is my third language, and then there it was."

I said to her, "I feel like I'm not a woman

「されたことのために

because of what was done to me.

女性ではないような気がします

I feel incomplete.

Am I going to be asexual?"

私は性的欲望を持たないのでしょうか？」

Because from what I knew about FGM,

私がFGMについて 知っていることからすると

the whole aim of it was to control the sexuality of women.

目的は女性の性を 管理するためだといいます

It's so that we don't have any sexual desire.

女性が性的欲望を 持たないようにするのです

And I said, "Am I asexual now?

私は聞きました 「私には性欲がないんでしょうか？

Will I just live the rest of my life not feeling like having sex,

セックスをしたいとも 楽しいとも思わずに

not enjoying sex?"

残りの人生を生きるのでしょうか？」

She couldn't answer my questions,

彼女には答えられず

so they went unanswered.

質問はそのままになりました

When I started having my period around the age of 14,

14歳の頃 生理が始まると

I realized I didn't have normal periods because of FGM.

FGMのせいで 普通の生理ではありませんでした

My periods were heavy, they were long, and they were very painful.

生理がとても重く 期間も長く ひどい痛みを伴いました

Then they told me I had fibroids.

子宮筋腫だと言われました

They're like these little balls sitting there.

小さなボールのようなものが できるのです

One was covering one of my ovaries.

１つは私の卵巣を覆っている と言われました

And there came then the big news.

そこで大きなニュースを知らされました

"We don't think you can have children, Khadija."

「カディジャ 君は子供が 産めないかもしれない」

And once again, I was an angry black woman.

再び私は怒れる黒人女性になりました

I went home and I said to my mom,

家に帰って 母に言いました

"Your act, your action, no matter what your may defense may be" --

「お母さんの行いのせいで それがどんな理由からであろうとも―」

because she thought she did it out love --

母は愛情ゆえにしたことでしたから―

"what you did out of love is harming me, and it's hurting me.

「愛情ゆえにやったことが 私の害になって 私を傷つけてるのよ

What do you have to say for that?"

どう言い訳するつもり？」

She said, "I did what I had to do as a mother."

母は「母親としてすべきことを したまでよ」と言いました

I'm still waiting for an apology, by the way.

私はまだ母の謝罪の言葉を 待っています

Then I got married.

それから私は結婚しました

And once again --

そして再び

FGM is like the gift that keeps giving.

FGMはいつまでもついてまわります

You figure that out very soon.

すぐにおわかりになるでしょう

Sex was very painful.

セックスがとても痛かったのです

It hurt all the time.

始終痛みを伴います

And of course I realized, they said, "You can't have kids."

もちろん「子供は産めない」 と言われたので

I thought, "Wow, is this my existence? Is this what life is all about?"

「これが私の存在価値？ 私の人生はこれだけなの？」と思いました

I'm proud to tell you,

誇らしい気持ちでお伝えしたいのですが

five months ago,

５か月前

I was told I was pregnant.

私は妊娠を告げられました

(Applause)

I am the lucky girl.

私は幸運です

There are so many women out there who have gone through FGM

FGMを経験した不妊の 女性たちが

who have infertility.

とてもたくさんいます

I know a nine-year-old girl who has incontinence, constant infections, pain.

私は失禁 感染症 そして痛みを感じている ９歳の女の子を知っています

It's that gift. It doesn't stop giving.

FGMの贈り物です いつまでもついてまわるのです

It affects every area of your life,

人生のあらゆる側面に影響します

and this happened to me because I was born a girl

in the wrong place.

That's why it happened to me.

I channel all that anger, all that pain, into advocacy

because I needed my pain to be worth something.

So I'm the director of an organization called No FGM Australia.

私はNo FGM Australiaという 団体を率いています

You heard me right.

Why No FGM Australia?

FGM is in Australia.

Two days ago, I had to call Child Protective Services,

２日前 私は児童保護施設に 電話をしました

because somewhere in Australia,

there's a four-year old

４歳の子供―

there's a four-year-old whose mom is planning on performing FGM on her.

４歳の子供に母親がFGMを 施そうとしていたからです

That child is in kindy. I'll let that sink in: four years old.

まだ幼稚園の子供です よく聞いてください たった４歳です

A couple of months ago, I met a lady who is married to a Malaysian man.

数か月前 マレーシア人男性と 結婚している女性に出会いました

Her husband came home one day and said he was going to take their daughters

彼女の夫はある日 娘たちを連れて

back to Malaysia to cut off their clitoris.

マレーシアに戻り クリトリスを切除すると言い出しました

And she said, "Why?" He said they were dirty.

彼女が「どうして？」と聞くと 夫はクリトリスは汚いと言ったそうです

And she said, "Well, you married me."

彼女が「私と結婚したじゃない」と言うと

He said, "Oh, this is my cultural belief."

彼は「でもこれは僕の文化的思想だから」 と言ったそうです

They then went into a whole discussion where she said to him,

彼らはしっかり議論をして 彼女は夫に

"Over my dead body will you do that to my daughters."

「娘たちを連れて行くなら 私を殺してからにしなさい」と言ったそうです

But imagine if this woman wasn't aware of what FGM was,

この女性がFGMのことを知らなかったら

if they never had that conversation?

この会話をしなかったら どうなっていたでしょう？

Her children would have been flown over to Malaysia

彼女の子供たちはマレーシアに 連れて行かれて

and they would have come back changed for the rest of their lives.

一生取り戻すことのできない 変わり果てた姿で戻ってきたことでしょう

Do you know the millions of dollars

it would take us to deal with an issue like that?
