There are a lot of ways

ဒီအံ့ဖွယ်ရာ ဘာသာစကား၊

this marvelous language of ours,

အင်္ဂလိပ်ဟာ အဓိပ္ပာယ်မရှိတဲ့

English, doesn't make sense.

နည်းလမ်းတွေ အများကြီးရှိပါတယ်။

For example, most of the time

ဥပမာ အချိန်အများစုမှာတော့

when we talk about more than one of something,

တစ်ခုခုရဲ့ တစ်ခုထက်ပိုတာအကြောင်း ပြောတဲ့အခါ

we put an S on the end.

အဆုံးမှာ S ထည့်ကြတယ်။

One cat, two cats.

One cat, two cats တို့ပေါ့။

But then, there's that handful of words

သို့ပေမည့် အရာတွေကို တစ်မူထူးစွာလုပ်တဲ့

where things work differently.

စကားလုံး အနည်းအကျဉ်းတော့ရှိတယ်။

Alone you have a man;

လူတစ်ယောက်တည်းဆို a man

if he has company, then you've got men,

သူ့မှာ အဖော်ပါလာရင် men ဖြစ်သွားရော။

or probably better for him, women too.

(သို့)ဖြစ်နိုင်တာက သူပိုကောင်းဖို့ women ရောပေါ့

Although if there were only one of them,

သူတို့ထဲက တစ်ယောက်တည်းဆိုရင်တော့

it would be a woman.

a woman ဖြစ်လိမ့်မယ်။

Or if there's more than one goose,

(သို့) တစ်ကောင်ထက်ပိုတဲ့ goose ဆို

they're geese,

geese ဖြစ်ပေမဲ့

but why not lots of mooses, meese?

ဘာလို့ mooses တို့ meese တို့ အများကြီး မရှိတာလဲ။

Or if you have two feet,

(သို့) ခြေနှစ်ဖက် two feet ဆိုရင်

then why don't you read two beek

books အစား two beek

instead of books.

ဘာလို့ မဖတ်ကြတာလဲ။

The fact is that if you were speaking English

အမှန်က သင်ဟာ လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ နှစ်တစ်ထောင်မတိုင်မီက

before about a thousand years ago,

အင်္ဂလိပ်စကား ပြောနေခဲ့မယ်ဆိုရင်

beek is exactly what you would have said

beek ဟာ စာအုပ်တစ်အုပ်ထက် ပိုတာအတွက်

for more than one book.

သင်ပြောဆိုခဲ့မှာ အတိအကျပါပဲ။

If Modern English is strange,

ခေတ်သစ် အင်္ဂလိပ်စာဟာ ထူးဆန်းတယ်ဆိုရင်

Old English needed therapy.

ခေတ်ဟောင်း အင်္ဂလိပ်စာဟာ ကုသမှုလိုတယ်။

Believe it or not,

ယုံချင်မှ ယုံကြပါ၊

English used to be an even harder language

အင်္ဂလိပ်ဟာ ဒီခေတ်ထက် သင်ဖို့ ပိုတောင်ခက်တဲ့

to learn than it is today.

ဘာသာစကားတစ်ခု ဖြစ်ခဲ့ဖူးတယ်။

Twenty-five hundred years ago,

လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ နှစ်ပေါင်း ၂၅၀၀ က

English and German were the same language.

အင်္ဂလိပ်နဲ့ ဂျာမန်ဟာ ဘာသာစကား တစ်ခုတည်းဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

They drifted apart slowly,

little by little becoming more and more different.

That meant that in early English,

ဆိုလိုတာက ခေတ်ဦးအင်္ဂလိပ်မှာ

just like in German,

ဂျာမန်မှာလိုပဲ

inanimate objects had gender.

သက်မဲ့အရာဝတ္ထုတွေမှာ အထီးအမရှိခဲ့တယ်။

A fork, gafol, was a woman;

A fork, gafol ဟာ ဣတ္ထိလိင်ဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

a spoon, laefel, was a man;

a spoon, laefel ဟာ ပုလ္လိင်ဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

and the table they were on, bord,

ဒါတွေရှိနေတဲ့ စားပွဲ bord က

was neither, also called neuter.

တစ်ခုမှ မဟုတ်ဘဲ နပုလ္လိင်လို့လည်း ခေါ်တယ်။

Go figure!

မှန်းသာ ကြည့်ပေတော့။

Being able to use words

စကားလုံးတွေကို သုံးနိုင်တာဟာ

meant not just knowing their meaning

၎င်းတို့အဓိပ္ပာယ်ကို သိရုံသာမဟုတ်ဘဲ

but what gender they were, too.

၎င်းတို့ဖြစ်ခဲ့တဲ့ လိင်ကိုပါ ဆိုလိုတယ်။

And while today there are only about a dozen plurals

ဒီခေတ်မှာ တစ်ဒါဇင်လောက်ရှိတဲ့ အဓိပ္ပာယ်မရှိ

that don't make sense,

ဗဟုဝုစ်တွေ ရှိပေမဲ့

like men

and geese,

ဥပမာ men တို့

geese တို့ပေါ့

in Old English, it was perfectly normal

ခေတ်ဟောင်း အင်္ဂလိပ်မှာ ဒီလို အနမတဂ္ဂ

for countless plurals to be like that.

ဗဟုဝုစ်တွေအတွက်တော့ လုံးဝကို ပုံမှန်ဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

You think it's odd that more than one goose is geese?

one goose ထက်ပိုတာက geese ဆိုတာ ဆန်းတယ်လို့ သင်ထင်လား။

Well, imagine if more than one goat

ကောင်းပြီ၊ one goat ထက် ပိုတာက

was a bunch of gat,

gat တစ်အုပ် oak tree ထက် ပိုရင်

or if more than one oak tree

ack တစ်ကွင်းလို့

was a field of ack.

စိတ်ကူးကြည့်ပါ။

To be able to talk about any of these,

ဒါတွေအကြောင်း ပြောနိုင်ဖို့ဆို

you just had to know the exact word for their plural

အဆုံးမှာ လက်စွဲတော် S ထည့်ရုံဆိုတာထက်

rather than just adding the handy S on the end.

၎င်းတို့ရဲ့ ဗဟုဝုစ်အတွက် တိကျတဲ့ စကာလုံးကိုသာ သိဖို့လိုတာပါ။

And it wasn't always an S at the end either.

အဆုံးမှာ S တစ်ခုကလည်း အမြဲ မဟုတ်ခဲ့ဘူး။

In merry Old English,

ခေတ်ဟောင်းအင်္ဂလိပ်မှာ

they could add other sounds to the end.

အဆုံးမှာ အခြားအသံတွေ ထည့်နိုင်တယ်။

Just like more than one child is children,

one child ထက် ပိုတာက children ပါ။

more than one lamb was lambru,

one lamb ထက် ပိုတာက lambru ပါ။

you fried up your eggru,

သင့် eggru တွေကို သင် ကြော်ခဲ့ပြီး

and people talked not about breads,

လူတွေက breads တွေအကြောင်း မဟုတ်ဘဲ

but breadru.

breadru တွေလို့ ပြောခဲ့တယ်။

Sometimes it was like sheep is today -

တစ်ခါတစ်ရံမှာ ဒီနေ့ခေတ် sheep လိုပါပဲ။

where, to make a plural, you don't do anything.

ဗဟုဝုစ်တစ်ခု လုပ်ရာမှာ ဘာမှ သင် မလုပ်ဘူး။

One sheep,

One sheep

two sheep.

two sheep ပါ။

In Old English, one house,

ခေတ်ဟောင်းအင်္ဂလိပ်မှာ

two house.

one house two house ပါ။

And just like today, we have oxen instead of oxes.

ဒီနေ့ခေတ်အတိုင်း ကျွန်ုပ်တို့မှာ oxes အစား oxen ရှိတယ်။

Old English people had toungen instead of tongues,

ခေတ်ဟောင်း အင်္ဂလိပ်တွေမှာ tongues အစား toungen ၊

namen instead of names,

names အစား namen ရှိပြီး

and if things stayed the way they were,

အရာတွေဟာ ရှိခဲ့တဲ့ အတိုင်းသာ တည်ရှိခဲ့ရင်

today we would have eyen instead of eyes.

ဒီနေ့ခေတ် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့မှာ eyes အစား eyen ရှိခဲ့လိမ့်မယ်။

So, why didn't things stay the way they were?

ဒီတော့ ဘာကြောင့် အရာတွေဟာ ရှိခဲ့သလို မနေလဲ။

In a word, Vikings.

တစ်လုံးတည်းပြောရင် ဗိုက်ကင်းတွေပါ။

In the 8th century, Scandinavian marauders

၈ ရာစုမှာ စက်ဒီနေးဗီးယန်း လှည့်လည် သောင်းကျန်းသူတွေဟာ

started taking over much of England.

They didn't speak English,

it's almost impossible to learn a new language

without an accent

and without slipping up here and there

as we all know from what language classes are like.

The Vikings were no different,

so they had a way of smoothing away

the harder parts of how English worked.

လွယ်ကူချောမွေ့စေတဲ့နည်းလမ်းတစ်ခု ရှိခဲ့တယ်။

Part of that was those crazy plurals.

ဒါရဲ့အစိတ်အပိုင်းက ဒီခပ်ကြောင်ကြောင် ဗဟုဝုစ်တွေပါ။

Imagine running up against a language

တစ်ဘက်မှာ eggru တို့ gat တို့ပါတဲ့

with eggru

ဘာသာစကား

and gat

တစ်ခုကို

on the one hand,

ရင်ဆိုင်နေရပြီး

and then with other words,

အခြားစကားလုံးတွေနဲ့

all you have to do is add 's'

လုပ်စရာဆိုလို 's' ထည့်ပြီး

and get days

days

and stones.

stones ရတာ စိတ်ကူးကြည့်ပါ။

Wouldn't it make things easier

အကုန်လုံး 's' သုံးတာက

to just use the 's' for everything?

အရာတွေကို ပိုမလွယ်စေဘူးလား။

That's how the Vikings felt too.

ဒါက ဗိုက်ကင်းတွေလည်း ခံစားရပုံပါ။

And there were so many of them,

သူတို့က အများကြီးရှိကာ

and they married so many of the English women,

အင်္ဂလိပ် အမျိုသမီး အများအပြားနဲ့ လက်ထပ်ခဲ့တယ်။

that pretty soon, if you grew up in England,

မကြာခင်ပဲ သင်ဟာ အင်္ဂလန်မှာ ကြီးပြင်းခဲ့ရင်

you heard streamlined English as much as the real kind.

အမျိုးအစား အစစ်လောက် များပြားတဲ့ ပြေပြစ်သွက်လက်တဲ့ အင်္ဂလိပ်ကို ကြားခဲ့တယ်။

After a while nobody remembered the real kind any more.

ခဏအကြာမှာ အမျိုးအစားအစစ်ကို ဘယ်သူမှ မှတ်မိတော့မှာမဟုတ်ဘူး။

Nobody remembered that once you said doora

doors အစား doora လို့၊ hands အစား handa လို့

instead of doors

တစ်ခါက သင်ပြောခဲ့တာကို

and handa instead of hands.

ဘယ်သူမှ မမှတ်မိခဲ့ဘူး။

Plurals made a lot more sense now,

ဗဟုဝုစ်တွေက အခု အများကြီး ပိုအဓိပ္ပာယ်

except for a few hold-outs like children

ရှိတယ်။ children နဲ့ teeth လို

and teeth

that get used so much

အသုံးများလွန်းပြီး

အကျင့်ဖျောက်ဖို့ခက်တဲ့

that it was hard to break the habit.

ပေတိပေကပ် အနည်းငယ်က လွဲရင်ပေါ့။

The lesson is

သင်ခန်းစာက

that English makes a lot more sense than you think.

အင်္ဂလိပ်စာဟာ သင်ထင်တာထက် အများကြီး ပိုအဓိပ္ပာယ်ရှိတာပါ။

Thank the ancestors of people

ဒီခေတ်မှာ peanuts အစား pea-night

in Copenhagen and Oslo for the fact

လက်တစ်ဆုပ်စာ မတောင်းဘူးဆိုတာအတွက်

that today we don't ask for a handful of pea-night

ကိုပင်ဟေဂင်နဲ့ အေ်စလိုက ရှေးဘိုးဘွားတွေကို

instead of peanuts.

ကျေးဇူးတင်လိုက်ပါ။

Although, wouldn't it be fun,

ပျော်စရာကောင်းမှာ မဟုတ်ပေမဲ့လည်း

if for just a week or two,

တစ်ပတ်၊ နှစ်ပတ်သာဆို

we could?
