Lord Shiva— primordial destroyer of evil, slayer of demons,

خواوەندی مەزن شیڤا، بکوژی خراپەکاران و سەربڕی ئەهریمەنەکان،

protector, and omniscient observer of the universe—

پارێزەر و چاودێریکاری سەرەکی گەردوون،

was testing his wife’s patience.

دەیویست ئارامی خێزانەکەی تاقی دەکردەوە.

Historically, the union between Shiva and Parvati was a glorious one.

لە ڕووی مێژووییەوە، بەیەک گەیشتنی شیڤا و پارڤاتی بە یەکگرتنێکی بەهێز دادەنرێت.

They maintained the equilibrium between thought and action

توانیان پارسەنگی نێوان بیر و ئیش ڕابگرن

on which the well-being of the world depended.

کە کۆڵەکەی سەرەکی پشت وەستانی باشیی گەردوونە.

Without Parvati as the agent of energy, growth, and transformation on Earth,

بەبێ پارڤاتی کە بەرپرسی وزە، گەشە و گۆڕانکارییەکانی زەوییە،

Shiva would become a detached observer, and the world would remain static.

شیڤا بۆ هەمیشە گۆشەگیر دەبێت، و گەردوونیش خامۆش دەبێت.

But together, the two formed a divine union known as Ardhanarishvara––

بەڵام بەیەکەوە، یەکگرتووییەکی خواوەندیان پێکهێنا کە ناوی ئەردهاناریشڤارا بوو.

a sacred combination

یەکگرتنێکی پیرۆز بوو

which brought fertility and connection to all living things.

کە خێرو بێری و پەیوەستبوونی بۆ خەڵک بەدی هێنا.

For these reasons, Parvati was worshipped far and wide

بەهۆی ئەم هۆکارانە، پارڤاتی لە هەموو شوێنێک کوڕنۆشی بۆ دەبرا

as the mother of the natural world––

وەک دایکی سروشتی جیهان

and the essential counterpart to Shiva’s powers of raw creation.

و تەواوکاری گرنگی توانای دروست کردنی شیڤا.

She oversaw humanity’s material comforts;

پارڤاتی گرنگی بە دابینکردنی پێداویستی خۆشگوزەرانی مرۆڤ دەکرد:

and ensured that the Earth’s inhabitants were bonded to each other

و ئەرکی درووستکردنی و پاراستنی پەیوەندی باش لە نێوان دانیشتوانی زەوی لە ڕووی

physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

جەستیەی، هەست و روحەوە گرتبووە ئەستۆ.

Yet a rift had grown between these two formidable forces.

کەلێنێک لە نێوان ئەم دووهێزە مەزنە درووست بوو بوو.

While Parvati sustained daily life with care and control,

لە کاتێکدا پارڤاتی گرنگی بە پێداویستییەکانی ژیانی سەر زەوی دەدا،

Shiva had begun to belittle his wife’s essential work—

شیڤا لە گرنگی ئیشەکانی پارڤاتی کەم دەکردەوە

and insisted on quarreling about their roles in the universe.

و سوڕ بوو لەسەر درووستکردنی مشومڕ سەبارەت بە ڕۆڵی هەر یەکێکیان لە گەردوون.

He believed that Brahma, the Creator of the world,

شیڤا پێی وابوو براهاما، خوڵقێنەری جیهان،

had conceived the material plane purely for his own fancy.

جیهانی ماددەی لە خەیاڵدانی خۆی ئافراندبوو.

And therefore, all material things were merely distractions called māyā—

بۆیە هەموو جۆرەکانی ماددە دەبنە هۆی سەرلێشێوان کە پێی دەوترێت مایا

nothing but a cosmic illusion.

جگە لە خەیاڵێکی پووچ هیچیتر نییە.

For millennia Parvati had merely smiled knowingly

بۆ ماوەیەکی دوور و درێژ پارڤاتی بە پێکەنینەوە وەڵامی دەدایەوە هەر چەندە

as Shiva dismissed the things she nurtured.

دەیزانی شیڤا هەموو کارەکانی ئەوی لەناو دەبرد.

But upon His latest rebuke,

بەڵام لە کۆتا سەرکۆنەی شیڤا،

she knew she had to prove the importance of her work

پارڤاتی هەستی کرد کە پێویست دەکات گرنگی کارەکانی بۆ یەکجار و هەمیشە

once and for all.

بخاتە ڕوو.

She took flight from the world,

بەسەر زەویدا فڕی،

withdrawing her half of the cosmic energy that kept the Earth turning.

نیوەی وزەی خۆی، کە زەوی بە ئیش دەخست، کێشایەوە.

At her disappearance, a sudden, terrifying and all-encompassing scarcity

دوای ئەوەی وون بوو، قات و قڕییەکی لە ناکاوی کەمەرشکێن سەری هەڵدا

enveloped the world in eerie silence.

جیهانیش کەوتە بارێکی خامۆشی ترسهێنەر.

Without Parvati, the land became dry and barren.

بەبێ پارڤاتی، وشکەساڵی و بێپیتبوون ڕووی لە زەوی کرد.

Rivers shrank and crops shriveled in the fields.

ڕووبارەکان وشک بوون و دانەوێڵە لە کێلگەکان تێکشکان.

Hunger descended on humanity.

برسێتی باڵی بەسەر مرۆڤایەتیدا کێشا.

Parents struggled to console their starving children

دایک و باوکان نەیاندەتوانی برسیبوونی منداڵەکانیان چارەسەر بکەن

while their own stomachs rumbled.

لە کاتێکدا گەدەی خۆیان خاڵی بوو.

With nothing to eat, people no longer gathered over heaped bowls of rice,

بەهۆی ئەوەی هیچ شتێک نەبوو بیخۆن، خەڵک چیتر لە دەوری چەڵتوک کۆنەدەبوونەوە

but withdrew and shrank from the darkening world.

بەڵکو کشانەوە و وردە وردە چونە قوڵایی جیهانی تاریک و خامۆش.

To His shock and awe,

هەر چەندە چاوەڕوانی وانەبوو،

Shiva also felt the profound emptiness left by his wife’s absence.

شیڤا هەستی بە خاڵی بوون دەکرد بە هۆی دیارنەمانی خێزانەکەی.

Despite His supreme power,

سەڕەڕایی هێزە مەزنەکەی، شیڤا

He too realized that He was not immune to the need for sustenance,

بۆی دەرکەوت ئەویش لەم کاوڵکاریە پارێزراو نییە و پێویستی بە بەردەوامیبوون هەیە،

and His yearning felt bottomless and unbearable.

پەشیمانبوونەوەکەی بێ سوود و بێنرخ دەهاتە بەرچاو.

As Shiva despaired over the desolate Earth,

دوای ئەوەی شیڤا لە زەوی بێهیوا بوو،

He came to realize that the material world

گەیشتە ئەو ئەنجامەی کە جیهانی ماددە

could not be so easily dismissed.

بە ئاسانی لەناو نابرێت.

At her husband’s epiphany,

دوای پەنجە گەستنی مێردەکەی،

the compassionate Parvati could no longer stand by

پارڤاتی میهرەبان چیتر نەیتوانی لە دوورەوە بوەستێت

and watch her devotees wasting away.

چاودێری لە ناوچونی ئەزیزانی بکات.

To walk among them and restore their health,

بۆ ئەوەی بە ناویان بگەرێت و هێزیان بۆ بگێرێتەوە،

she took the form of a new avatar,

شێوەی خواوەندێکی دیکەی وەرگرت،

carrying a golden bowl of porridge and armed with a jewel-encrusted ladle.

قاپێکی لە زێر دروستکراوی پر شلە و کەوگیرێکی دروستکراوی لە گەوهەر پێ بوو.

As word of this hopeful figure spread,

دوای ئەوەی هەواڵی گەیشتنی خواوەند بڵاوبوویەوە،

she was worshipped as Annapurna, the Goddess of food.

وەک ئاناپورانە کوڕنۆشی بۆ دەبرا وەک خواوەندی خۆراک.

With the arrival of Annapurna, the world blossomed anew.

بەگەیشتنی ئاناپۆرانا، جیهان دووبارە گەشایەوە.

People rejoiced at fertility and food, and communed together to give thanks.

خەڵک بە بەروبووم و خۆراک شادبوونەوە، کۆبوونەوە بۆ گەیاندنی سوپاسگوزاری.

Some believe that Annapurna first appeared in the sacred city of Kashi,

هەندێک پێیان وابوو ئاناپۆرانا سەرەتا لە شاری پیرۆزی کاشی دەرکەوت،

or the Place of Freedom, on the banks of the Ganges—

یان کۆشکی ئازادی لە سەر ڕۆخی ڕوباری گانگز،

where she opened a kitchen to fill the bellies of the people

کە چێشتخانەیەک کردبووەوە بۆ تێرکردنی سکی خەڵک

until they could eat no more.

تا ئەو کاتەی کە هیچیان بۆ ناخورێت.

But it was not only mere mortals who were served at her feast.

تەنها مرۆڤ لەم خوانە خواردنیان پێ نەبەخشرا.

Humbled at the scenes of earthly pleasure blooming all around him,

بەهۆی شادومانی زەوی و گەشەی دەوروبەری شیڤا شەرمەزار دەبێت،

Lord Shiva himself approached the goddess with an empty bowl

خۆی بە قاپێکی خاڵییەوە دەچێتە لای ئاناپۆرانا

and begged for food and forgiveness.

دوای لێخۆشبوون و خۆراک دەکات.

For this reason, the supreme deity is sometimes portrayed as a poor beggar

بەهۆی ئەم بەسەرهاتەوە، خوداوەندی مەزن وەک هەژارێکی سواڵکەر وێنا دەکرێت

at the mercy of Annapurna;

لە ژێر لێبوردەیی ئاناپۆرانا:

holding her golden bowl in her left hand, while the right forms the abhaya mudra––

لە دەستە چەپیدا، قاپێکی زێرینی لە دەستە، دەستە ڕاستیشی لە شێوەی ئابهایا مودرایە،

a gesture of safety and assurance.

هێما بۆ ئارامی و سەلامەتی.

With these symbols, this powerful avatar makes it clear

بەهۆی ئەم هێمایانەوە، خواوەندی بەهێز جەخت لەسەر

that the material world is anything but an illusion.

ئەوە دەکاتەوە کە جیهانی ماددە هەموو شتێکە جگە لە خەیاڵێکی پووچ.

Rather, it is a cycle of life that must be sustained—

بەڵکو خولی ژیانە و پێویستی بە بەردەوامی دان هەیە

from the feeding of open mouths and rumbling bellies,

لە پێدانی خوارد و تێرکردنی سکە برسیەکان،

to the equilibrium of the Earth.

تا دەگاتە ڕاگرتنی پارسەنگی زەوی.
